The route leading to the Expo Centre from Jinnah International Airport
Karachi has been decorated with national flags and buntings, and welcome-banners have also been placed along the route for the participants of the exhibition. Elaborate security and traffic arrangements have also been made for the occasion.

The four-day (Nov-22-25) biennial event, to be inaugurated by Prime
Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday morning, is expected to draw 90 delegations representing 43 countries of the world.

These delegations would be led by their respective countries’ defence
ministers, defence secretaries, chief defence staff and other senior officials.

A total 418 companies from 34 countries, including 157 Pakistani firms,

DEPO Director Media, Commodore Tahir Javed, told a news conference that overwhelming response from the companies from across the world has boosted our confidence, and it proves the success of this mega event.

He said that the holding of IDEAS-2016 is a moment of pride for the
nation, and it demonstrates that Pakistan is not behind any one in manufacturing quality defence products.

The Commodore further pointed out the level of positive response can be gauged from the fact that a large portion of Expo Centre has been booked by the defence production companies invited from different countries, including Turkey, China and Russia.

products, which include tanks, fighter jets, missile boats, Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and other military equipment will be showcased at the IDEAS-2016.

Trump meets Indian partners, despite vow to separate from business: Report

0

NEW YORK, Nov 21 (APP): US President-elect Donald Trump met at his Trump Tower residence in New York last week three Indian business partners, raising fresh questions about a separation between the Trump’s business and future work in the White House, according to a report in The New York Times.

The three Indian executives — Sagar Chordia, Atul Chordia, and Kalpesh Mehta are building a Trump-branded luxury apartment complex south of Mumbai. In a picture posted on Twitter, all four men are smiling and giving a thumbs-up.

The meeting comes as Trump vowed to hand off his business to his three adult children in a blind trust to avoid potential conflicts of interest while serving in the Oval Office.

A spokeswoman for the Trump Organization told the Times that the three Indian real estate executives flew from India to congratulate Trump.

“It was not a formal meeting of any kind,” Spokeswoman Breanna Butler said when asked about the meeting on Saturday.
The Times said Butler and Hope Hicks, a spokeswoman for Donald

Trump, declined to comment when asked by the Times if the meeting included any discussion of Trump businesses in India or expanding that business.

One of the Indian businessmen, Sagar Chordia, posted photographs on Facebook on Wednesday showing that he also met with two of Trump’s children — Ivanka and Eric. Trump’s children are helping to run his businesses as they play a part in the presidential transition.

The three Indian executives have been quoted in Indian newspapers, including The Economic Times, as saying they have discussed expanding their partnership with the Trump Organization now that Trump is president-elect.

The Times said Sagar Chordia did not respond to a request for a telephone interview. But in a series of text messages with the Times early Sunday, he confirmed that the meeting with Trump and members of his family had taken place, and that an article written about it in the Indian newspaper, which reported that one of his partners said they had discussed the desire to expand the deals with the Trump family, was accurate.

Ethics lawyers in Washington, cited by the New York Times, said that a meeting with Indian real estate partners, regardless of what was discussed, raised conflict of interest questions for Trump, who could be perceived as using the presidency to advance his business interests.

“There may be people for whom this looks O.K.,” Robert Walker, the former chief counsel of the Senate Ethics Committee, who advises corporations and members of Congress on government ethics issues, was quoted as saying. “But for a large part of the American public, it is not going to be O.K. His role as president-elect should dictate that someone else handles business matters.”

In an account of the meeting that appeared in The Economic Times, an Indian newspaper, Trump was quoted as praising the United States’ relationship with India and its prime minister, Narendra Modi.

Internationally, many properties that bear Trump’s name are the result of marketing deals “like the one in India” in which he is paid by someone for the use of his name but does not actually own the underlying property, according to the report. He has such marketing agreements in South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, the Philippines and Turkey, according to a list published by his company.

UN chief slams attacks on civilians and infrastructure in Syria’s Aleppo

0
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon bids farewell to United Nations

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 21 (APP): United Nations Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon as well as senior humanitarian officials have condemned attacks that have killed and maimed scores of civilians in Syria, including children, and called on all parties to cease such attacks as well as to ensure unhindered humanitarian access to the people in need.

In a statement issued by his office late Sunday evening, the  secretary-general condemned the reported intense air assault over the last several days in eastern Aleppo city as well as indiscriminate shelling reported in areas of Aleppo governorate and the western parts of Aleppo city. Hospitals have been rendered nonfunctional and schools have been stuck in the attacks.

“The Secretary-General reminded all parties to the conflict that targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure is a war crime [and] called on all sides to immediately cease any such attacks,” read the statement, adding: “Those responsible for these and other atrocities in Syria, whoever and wherever they are, must one day be brought to account.”

Furthermore, in a statement, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria,  Ali Al-Za’tari, and the Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, Kevin Kennedy, underlined that the UN stands ready to assist civilians in the war-torn country, as soon as access is granted by all parties.

“[We have] shared with all parties to the conflict in Aleppo and  Member States [of the UN] concerned, a detailed humanitarian plan to provide urgently needed assistance to the inhabitants of eastern Aleppo, and conduct medical evacuations for the ill and injured” said both Al-Za’tari and Kennedy.

“It is imperative [that] all parties agree to the plan and allow us to
secure immediate, safe and unimpeded access to provide relief to those most in need in eastern Aleppo, but equally in all other parts of Syria where there are people in need,” they asserted.

“Syrian civilians on all sides of the divide are at the receiving end
of the escalating violence,” read the statement.

Moreover, the besiegement of eastern Aleppo and the strong grip of
non-state armed groups in that part of the city has resulted in a dire and urgent need of protection and humanitarian assistance, it added.

Highlighting that international humanitarian and human rights laws
obligate all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure from the effects of hostilities, the senior UN humanitarian officials called on them to ensure unconditional, unimpeded and sustained access to the millions of people in need, particularly those in besieged and hard-to-reach areas across Syria.

UN chief calls for stepped up action to prevent vehicle related deaths and injuries

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon bids farewell to United Nations

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 20 (APP): With more than 3,400 people losing
their lives on the world’s roads every day, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki moon marked the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims with a strong call to scale up action to prevent these deaths.
“That means improving the quality and safety of roads and vehicles, preventing speeding and drunk driving, and vigorously promoting the use of seat belts, motorcycle helmets and child car seats,” the secretary general said in his message on the World Day, in which he also cited the need to focus on post crash response, as timely emergency care, better medical treatment, psychological support, and early rehabilitation for the injured can save lives and reduce disability.
He also expressed concerns over the failure of many countries to
provide effective care for road traffic victims after crash, and failure to investigate crashes thoroughly and provide fair settlements for the injured.
“Worldwide, there is great disparity in access to emergency care.
Some 90 per cent of the world’s road fatalities occur in low and middle income countries. It is estimated that if emergency care systems
for seriously injured patients in these countries could be brought up to the levels of high performing nations, an estimated 500,000 lives could be saved each year.”
Finally, the Secretary General addressed the importance of achieving Sustainable Development Goal target 3.6 to reduce by 50 per cent by 2020 the number of people killed and injured in road traffic crashes.
“On this World Day of Remembrance, in honour of those killed and
injured each year, let us take the necessary steps to make our roads safe for all,” he said.
