UNGA special session on countering world drug problem opens Tuesday

UNITED NATIONS, April 18 (APP): A special session of the United
Nations General Assembly on the world drug problem opens on Tuesday to review global progress and challenges in fighting the menace.

Several heads of state and more than 40 ministers from around the
world, including Pakistan’s Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan,
are scheduled to attend the three-day session at UN Headquarters in New York.

“The session will review progress and discuss challenges in countering the world drug problem and in implementing the 2009 Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem,” Dan Thomas,  spokesman of the president of the UN General Assembly, told a news  briefing ahead of the session.

Mauritian President given guard of honour at Aiwan-e-Sadr

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): President of Mauritius, Bibi Ameenah Firdaus Gurib-Fakim was given guard of honour on her arrival at the Aiwan-e-Sadr here on Monday.

President Mamnoon Hussain greeted the Mauritian President at the presidency who had earlier arrived in the capital from Karachi on Sunday.

A contingent of tri-services guard presented guard of honour to the visiting dignitary, who also reviewed the parade.  The national anthems of the two countries were played.

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): President Mamnoon Hussain and President of Mauritius Dr. Ameenah Firdaus Gurib-Fakim agreed here Monday on strengthening ties in diverse areas including education, health and trade.

In a one-on-one meeting held here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr,
the two sides emphasized on close collaboration for the mutual
benefit of their countries.

President Mamnoon said Pakistan gives high importance to
its relations with Mauritius that span over decades.

Monday congratulated the elected members of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Council.

In his message, the Prime Minister expressed the hope that the
elected members of PML-N would devote their capabilities and energies for the prosperity and progress of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Through their services, they would be setting a precedent, a
press release of the PM Office media wing quoted the Prime Minister

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs (SAPM), Syed Tariq Fatemi called on President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mrs. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim  here on Monday.

The Special Assistant extended a warm welcome to the President of Mauritius on her first ever visit to Pakistan, and expressed the confidence that her visit would help strengthen the relations between the two sides.

The Special Assistant underlined the need for bolstering economic and trade relations between the two sides, and highlighted the numerous steps taken by the Government of Pakistan, resulting in an overall robust economic performance.

Foreign Ministry rejects baseless media allegations

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): Ministry of Foreign Affairs Monday
strongly rebuffed a report appearing in section of press.

The ministry in its press release strongly rejected a news
item appearing in an English daily by Rana Mushtaq titled “New
corruption scandal of Rs2.32 bn surfaces in FO.”

It said the continued indulgence of the daily and its reporter
in a vilification campaign against the Ministry without any basis
was highly regrettable.

 

Final decision on Panama probe commission after consultation with political parties: PML-N meeting

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): A high level meeting of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Monday decided to take the parliamentary leaders of the political parties into confidence on the formation and other relevant matters vis-a-vis the proposed inquiry commission into Panama leaks before taking any final decision.

On directives of Prime Minister, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, the meeting was held here at the PM House under the chair of Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, said a press release.

Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rasheed, Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Law Minister Zahid Hamid, Minister for SAFRON Abdul Qadir Baloch, Adviser to PM Irfan Siddiqui, Senator Mushahidullah and Minister of State for IT Anusha Rehman attended the meeting that discussed the inquiry commission and its mandate.

US Senate delegation calls on COAS

ISLAMABAD, April 18 (APP): Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif Monday visited Shawal and reviewed progress of last phase  of operation in Shawal.

According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the COAS spent whole day with troops, busy in eliminating terrorists from their last bastion, close to Pak-Afghan Border.

COAS was briefed in detail by formation commander about operational gains so far. COAS was apprised that since start of  last phase in February 2016, in treacherous terrain of Shawal, more than 800 sq KM of area has been secured inflicting heavy casualties on terrorists.

61% Cotton, 70% paddy seed available for upcoming Kharif Season

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): As much as 24,501 metric tons of cotton seed will be available for sowing during the upcoming Kharif season (2016-17), which is about 61 percent of the total seed requirements of the country.

The availability of quality cotton seed in Punjab stands at 20,537 metric tons, 66 percent of total seed requirements in the provinces, according to the official figures.

The seed availability in Sind would be about 3950 metric tons, which would cater to the 48 percent demand for the seed in the provinces. Similarly, the 15 metric tons of cotton seed will be available in Khyber Pakhtunkha which is 29 percent of the requirements of the province, the official data revealed.

Pakistan, Mauritius to further strengthen bilateral ties

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): Pakistan and Mauritius enjoy close and cordial relations and both sides would explore possibilities of further strengthening existing bilateral ties in various fields.

This was stated by analysts while talking in Radio Pakistan’s News and Current Affairs’ program.

They said that Pakistan and Mauritius enjoyed close and cordial relations, which were based on mutual identity of views on regional and global issues.
