Pak hockey team beat Oman in 3-nation tournament

LAHORE, Feb 14 (APP):Pakistan beat hosts Oman 3-0 to take a winning start in the 3-nation hockey tournament at Muscat’s Sultan
Qaboos Sports Complex.
According to information made available here by the Pakistan Hockey Federation all three goals came through
open play.
The green shirts were ahead by two goals at the half time.
Shafqat Rasool, who has been recalled after a long time, was one of the scorers.
Oman’s new head coach is Pakistan’s former captain Tahir Zaman.

Pakistan: Ali Shan (13′), Ajaz Ahmed (21′), Shafqat Rasool (45′),
Tomorrow, Thursday Pakistan will take on Japan.
The three sides will play each other twice followed by a final between the sides finishing first and second
in the double league.

Iran Film Festival opens in Karachi amidst public excitement

KARACHI, Feb 14 (APP):A four-day Iran Film Festival opened here Wednesday evening offering people in general and connoisseur of art in
particular an opportunity to also enjoy movies that have gained
international acclaim over the years.
The festival to continue till February 18 was formally
inaugurated by known film director and actor Javed Shaikh amidst
presence of a sizable number of people from different walks of life
at Khana e Farhang, Culture Centre of Islamic Republic of Iran,
Karachi.
Two films, dubbed into Urdu and encompassing wide range of
subjects, will be screened on daily basis from 1500 hours to 1700
hours.
Shaikh, on behalf of citizens expressed his gratitude to the
Ministry of Culture Affairs of Islamic Republic of Iran and the
Director of Khana e Farhang for providing a chance to the people to
have a glimpse of the developments in the lives of people with whom
they enjoy long ties and strong bondage.
Mentioning that film industry in Iran has been cultivated on
strong lines and are not only internationally recognized for their
content but also technical excellence, Shaikh said the festival is
also an opportunity for Pakistan’s film industry to initiate joint
ventures with Iran.
“In view of the culture, tradition and above all the religion we
share this is definitely a chance to further strengthen our
relationship,” he said.
“It has been well communicated by our brothers from Iran that
despite no music and dance films is a medium that can attract public
attraction on basis of its substance,” he said adding feature films
are an efficient tool to bring about needed changes in the public mind
set.
Dr. Muhammad Raza Baqri, Director, Khana e Farhang said since
Islamic revolution in his country concerted efforts were made to
promote Islamic values with particular focus on the fact that Islam
itself is a progressive religion.
‘We as followers of Islam have to contribute towards progress in
every sphere of life in accordance with our religious norms, he said.
“Since the revolution films and other relevant mediums have been
turned into gadget of awareness so as to bring about needed change in
public perception about life itself and their responsibilities towards
each other,” he elaborated.
Samar Raza, a budding film maker of Pakistan and Agha Moosavi,
media coordinator of the culture centre also spoke on the occasion.

Nawaz Sharif vows to spread message about sanctity of vote

LAHORE, Feb 14 (APP):Former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said he would spread message regarding sanctity of vote to every corner of the country.
“Public vote is being disrespected in the country for the last 70 years and now time has come to restore its sanctity,” he added.
Talking to media upon his arrival at Jamia Naeemia, he said the country would only progress when public mendate would be respected.
He also thanked the people of Lodhran for their support in NA-154 by-election.

UK committed to strengthen trade ties with Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Feb 14 (APP):UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Pakistan MP Rehman Chishti Wednesday said his government was committed to increase trade and business opportunities between the United Kingdom and Pakistan by scaling up its trade relations through cross-sectoral business partnership.
He expressed these views during a meeting with Minister for Privatization Daniyal Aziz here, a press release said.
The minister welcomed the UK’s interest for investment in Pakistan and appreciated the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.
He also appreciated the British companies doing business in Pakistan, terming their active role a huge contribution to Pakistan’s economic development.
Aziz apprised the delegation of Pakistan’s privatization programme and welcomed the UK investment in the companies listed for early privatization.
Unfortunately, the minister said Pakistan was not always viewed as an investor-friendly country due to certain reasons.
However, he added that Pakistan was a country which was poised for large economic growth due to its geographical position.
He encouraged the UK to look into investment opportunities in areas of transport, manufacturing, energy, financial institutions and infrastructure, and participate in the open and transparent privatization transactions.
He especially highlighted two public entities, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) as the two biggest bleeding entities were in dire need of revival and transformation into profit-earning entities.
Chishti said Pakistan was a key priority for the UK and it always supported Pakistan’s entry into the GSP+ and wouldl continue to extend its support for development and trade.
The delegation members discussed various transactions and potential for investment and partnership.
Chishti reaffirmed his commitment to identify and bring more possible UK investment and trade delegation in Pakistan for future collaboration in diverse fields.
The minister concluded the meeting by highlighting the strong commitment of Pakistan’s leadership to move forward with the privatization programme, adding “Pakistan is open for business.”

Literacy vital for improving human indicators: Chairperson NCHD

ISLAMABAD, Feb 14 (APP):Chairperson National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Senator Razina Alam Khan has said that literacy vital for improving human indicators in the country.
She said this while addressing the Operational Review Meeting, which was attended by all the provincial heads and head of departments here at the Head Office, a press release said.
She said, “Education being the basis of human civilizations, benefits societies in many ways, as a major driver for economic growth and human development, empowers individuals by giving a better understanding for living a healthy, prosperous and peaceful life.
People who are illiterates lack decision making power and are less likely to participate in civic life. Hence, human indicators are all linked with education. We need to introduce education as an element for improving human indicators; we can say literacy plays a vital role in improving human indicators”.
She said though the government of Pakistan has taken steps to improve education and improvement is observed as decrease in out of school children, increase in Adjusted Net Enrollment Rate in Primary Education from 72% to 7 7% and increase in education facilities as well. All these efforts could not meet the target of 90% literacy rate, as we are moving at a very slow pace, we need to take some fast track initiatives to achieve 90% literacy rate, she maintained.
All the participants from provinces presented ongoing programmes in their respective domains and a detail discussion was generated about enrollment campaign, passing out of the students of 5th grade and different success stories.
The issue of raise of honorarium for teachers was raised by the provincial heads and it was decided that the issue will be taken with the government for approval.
All the policy makers need to focus on 40% illiterate population and a multi pronged strategy should be adapted to approach these 57 million illiterates, chairperson informed.
The NCHD is developing a comprehensive roadmap “National Plan of Action” with the help of provincial governments for encompassing mechanism for the achievement of education targets set in Vision 2025 and SDGs, she further informed.
She said this NPA is going to be launched very soon and serious efforts from all stakeholders working in the field of education including Government department/Institutions, NGOs, INGOs and donors will be required to work on the set targets of NPA in true spirits.
While briefing about salient features of new PC-1 it was informed that, we are focusing to empower by imparting livelihood and income generating skills along with basic literacy skills to 515,000 illiterates of 15-45 yrs by establishing 20,650 Functional Literacy Centers all over the country.
The NCHD main agenda in UPE is to support districts by providing access to out of school children by increasing enrollment rate and decreasing drop out rate, 5949 feeder schools all over the country are working to fulfill this requirement. It was further informed that NCHD is working on enhancement of non-formal schools as another initiative for mainstreaming of 6.4 million children of age 10-16, who have missed the schools.
In order to support human indicators through education, school health program and health & hygiene sessions along with free medical camps will be organized in functional literacy centers through volunteerism for community development department being relaunched through PC-1.
National Training Institute for non-formal education is being strengthened in upcoming PC-1 to prepare a pool of professionals for literacy and NFE by building capacity of 500 provincial and district level planners and managers, 500 teachers will be trained and research studies will be conducted in Lit & NFE, she observed.
The chairperson also informed the participants that NCHD will introduce performance based incentives to the employees. The director general informed the ORM that disbursement of staff salary from AGPR has started partially for the staff whose documentary requirement had been fulfilled. She also informed that the provision of medical facility to the NCHD staff is being introduced as well. The provincial heads on behalf of employees appreciated the efforts of chairperson and director general of NCHD being done by them for the welfare of employees.
All stakeholders being Pakistani and Muslim should support government by playing their role as an individual for achieving 90% literacy rate in the country to improve human indicators, she stressed. In this case each one, teach one is the best policy, she viewed.

Pak-Turk relationship is unique, exemplary: Ayaz Sadiq

exemplary.
We are emotionally attached with Turkey and proud of this relationship, he said while speaking to the
Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey Ihsan Mustafa Yurdakul in Parliament House, said a press release.
The Speaker said that Pakistan and Turkey enjoy close fraternal relations and frequent contacts at
the highest level have been the hallmark of these relations.
He underlined the need for enhanced interaction between the parliamentarians of both the countries for further cementing the fraternal relations between the two countries.
Parliamentarians of the two sides could play a meaningful role in the region as “parliamentary diplomacy”
could enable the real policy makers to understand each-others points of view better, he added.
Expressing his concern over the problems confronting Muslim Ummah, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that it was
the responsibility of all the parliamentarians from Muslim countries to work in close cooperation.
Ambassador of Turkey Mr. Ihsan Mustafa Yurdakul said that Pakistan and Turkey have unanimity of views on
the political front and the cooperation between both the nations should be extended to all spheres of all mutual relations.
He said that the culture and values of people in Pakistan and Turkey have much commonalities and could be utilized for strengthening mutual relations and for the benefit of the people. He assured the Speaker that his country would do all possible for
speeding up the pace of economic development and progress in Pakistan.

Govt to evolve comprehensive STPF -2018-23 for increasing country’s trade

ISLAMABAD, Feb 14 (APP):Federal, Secretary Ministry of Commerce and Textile Industry, Muhmmad Younas Dhaga on Wednesday said that it was priority of the government to evolve comprehensive Strategic Trade Policy Framework (2018-23) for increasing country’s trade.
Owing to government prudent trade policies, country’s exports increased in last three months and are expected to reach at $ 23 billion in coming months till June, 2018, Secretary Commerce said this while addressing to consultative sessions for the Strategic Trade Policy Framework 2018-23 with the business community of the country here on Wednesday.
The consultative sessions for the Strategic Trade Policy Framework 2018-23 with the business community was organized by Ministry of Commerce and Textile Industry here.
Secretary Commerce said that the objective of organizing the consultative sessions across the country with business community, think tanks and academia is to deliberate on existing STPF 2015-18, point out its loopholes, and identify current issues from stakeholder’s viewpoint.
He said that in recent negotiation with China and Indonesia on Free and Preferential Trade Agreement, the government was successful for getting tarrif reduction facility on top exports of the country.
He informed that in the upcoming STPF, Ministry of Commerce is devising the Long, medium and short term trade policy for the period of five years so that trade could benefit from the incentives announced in STPF 2018-23.
The major focus of STPF would be upon boosting exports in the Technology and Services Sector, competitiveness and investment linkages, particularly attraction of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the export related Industry and integration of local industry into global value chain.
He emphasized upon the stakeholders for their concrete proposals based upon proper research of markets and data, for their consideration by Ministry of Commerce and incorporation of the same in the upcoming STPF 2018-23.
On the occasion business community of the country, appreciated the efforts of Ministry of Commerce and Textile Industries for considering consultation with the traders.
In consultative meeting Vice President of Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) hailed the government efforts for consulting the with business community to make consensus on STPF 2018+19.

Marriyum condoles demise of senior journalist Ashfaq Sajid

China intensifying consultations with member countries for SCO summit preparations

BEIJING, Feb 14 (APP):China is intensifying communication and consultations with Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members on preparations for the SCO summit to be held in Qingdao in June, a spokesperson of Chinese foreign ministry Wednesday said.
“At present, China is maintaining close communication with member countries on preparations for the summit and intensifying consultations,” Chinese foreign ministry’s spokesperson Geng Shuang said during his regular press briefing here.
He said as the chair of the SCO presidency, China will hold the SCO summit in Qingdao in June this year.
“China will work with all parties involved to push the summit to a complete success and inject new impetus into the sustainable development of the SCO,” he added.
The east China’s Qingdao city will host the SCO Summit in June this year. Shandong is the birthplace of many ancient Chinese thinkers, including Confucius. In 2017, its GDP exceeded 7.2 trillion yuan (about 1.1 trillion U.S.dollars).
The summit has China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan as full members.

MULTAN, Feb 14 (APP)::PCB Challengers defeated rivals PCB
Blasters by 58 runs in the match three of Triangular One Day
Women’s Cricket Tournament 2018 at Multan Cricket Stadium on
Wednesday.
Batting first, PCB challengers put on a total of 186 for
the loss of six wickets in the allotted 50 overs with main
contributions from Iram Javed (48) Sidra Ameen (46 not out),
and Sana Taj (32). Ghulam Fatima and Sania Khan claimed two
wickets each while Kainat Imtiaz bagged one wicket.
In reply, PCB Blasters were bundled out at 128 in 44 overs.
Naheeda Khan (41) and Fareeha Mahmood (37) were the main
contributors from PCB Blasters.
PCB Challengers bowling trio Nashra Sandhu, Waheeda
Akhtar and Elizabeth Barkat claimed two wickets each.
