NEW YORK, Feb 5 (APP)::The Trump administration said Monday it is worried about the slump in the U.S. stock market.
“We’re always concerned when the market loses any value, but we’re also confident in the economy’s fundamentals,” a white House official told CNBC television network.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 400 points Monday afternoon, and the S&P 500 traded more than 1 percent lower, extending last week’s plunge.
On Air Force One, traveling with President Donald Trump to Ohio, White House spokesman Raj Shah said, “markets do fluctuate. Short-term we all know that.” He added the “fundamentals of the economy are strong,” referencing evidence of wage growth and unemployment numbers at their lowest in nearly two decades.
President Trump has touted the strong stock market performance since his election win and has yet to deal with a significant market pullback. The Dow is up more than 30 percent since the election.

Gaza is a constant humanitarian emergency’: UN chief

0

UNITED NATIONS, FEB 5 (APP)::UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday described the Gaza Strip as a constant humanitarian emergency and said he was extremely concerned about the financial cuts made to UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
The humanitarian and economic situation in Gaza remains dire, Guterres said in remarks at the opening of the 2018 session of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
The United Nations Country Team in Palestine has predicted that Gaza will become unlivable by 2020, unless concrete action is taken to improve basic services and infrastructure, he continued.
Yet Gaza remains squeezed by crippling closures and a state of constant humanitarian emergency. Two million Palestinians are struggling everyday with crumbling infrastructure, an electricity crisis, a lack of basic services, chronic unemployment and a paralyzed economy. All of this is taking place amid an unfolding environmental disaster, he added.
Guterres also in his speech lamented the recent cuts made to the UNWRA following US President Donald Trump’s decision last month to withhold funds from the programme.
I am extremely concerned that the latest shortfall in UNRWA’s funding will gravely impair the agency’s ability to deliver on its mandate and preserve critical services such as education and health care for Palestine refugees, the secretary-general said.
At stake is the human security, rights and dignity of the five million Palestine refugees across the Middle East. But also at stake is the stability of the entire region which may be affected if UNRWA is unable to continue to provide vital services to the Palestine refugee population, both across the occupied Palestinian territory and in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.
I appeal to the generosity of the international community not to let that happen, he added.
The United States said this month it would withhold $65m. of $125m. it had planned to send to UNRWA, amid worsening bilateral relations between Washington and Ramallah that followed Trump’s decision in December to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Gueterres also told the committee that the international community must face reality and acknowledge that the potential to create an irreversible one-state reality that is incompatible with realizing the legitimate national, historic and democratic aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians is fast approaching.
Ongoing settlement construction and expansion in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is illegal under UN resolutions and international law. It is a major obstacle to peace and it must be halted and reversed, Gutteres said, adding Violence and incitement continue to fuel a climate of fear and mistrust.
Meanwhile, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon called on the Security Council to condemn payments made to Palestinian terrorists, following a deadly attack in the West Bank settlement of Ariel on Monday afternoon.
Guterres also said the global consensus for the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel “could be eroding,” even as the humanitarian and economic situation in Gaza worsens and might make the Palestinian enclave “unlivable by 2020.”
Guterres criticized Israel for its construction of settlements and expansion in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, saying they are illegal under U.N. resolutions and international law.
“It is a major obstacle to peace and it must be halted and reversed,” he said, adding that “violence and incitement continue to fuel a climate of fear and mistrust.”
The secretary-general reiterated his stance that both Israel and an eventual Palestinian state could claim Jerusalem as their capital, but did not comment on U.S. President Donald Trump’s announced intention to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by the end of 2019.

President urges world nations to use their influence for right to self-determination of Kashmiris

APP78-05 ISLAMABAD: February 05 - President Mamnoon Hussain addressing the Kashmir Solidarity Day Seminar at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. APP

ISLAMABAD, Feb 5 (APP):Indicating towards the nefarious means being used by India to malign the indigenous freedom movement of the people of Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK), President Mamnoon Hussain Monday urged the world nations to use their influence for the right to self-determination of the Kashmiris to ensure sustainable and lasting peace in the region.
“According to latest reports, notorious militant organisations operating in the different parts of the world were being mobilized in IoK by India to sabotage the indigenous movement of Kashmir. This is a very treacherous scheme which will have devastating repercussions. This Indian effort will also go in vain like those of the past. Insha Allah,” he said while addressing a seminar organized in connection with the Kashmir Solidarity Day here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
Minister for Defense Engr Khurram Dastgir Khan, President Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Muhammad Masood Khan, Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Maulana Fazalur Rehman, MNA Shafqat Mehmood, Senator Rehman Malik, Convener of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Ghulam Muhammad Safi, Chairperson of APHC Peace and Culture Committee Mishal Malik and Chairperson / President of South Asian Strategic Stability Institute (SASSI) Dr Maria Sultan also addressed the seminar.
The president said, “We believe that the situation in IoK has already endangered the peace of South-Asia.”
He said freedom struggle of the brave and valiant people of Kashmir was a unique movement in the world. They had been facing persecution for the last 70 years. Despite this severe repression, they had been heroically facing the subjugation, he added.
He said it was the only freedom movement of the world against which all forms of oppression were used. Even, Pellets guns were deliberately fired into the eyes of youth which destroyed their lives by damaging their eye-sight, he added.
“We pay tribute to the young children who lost their eye-sight, our sisters who sacrificed their husband, parent who sacrificed their beloved children for the sake of freedom.”
The president reiterated that the people and the government of Pakistan would continue to provide political, moral and diplomatic support to the people of IoK until the achievement of their objective.
He recalled that during the independence movement of Sub-Continent, the people of Kashmir associated their future with the Muslims of the region in their struggle for Pakistan and they also participated in the struggle for Pakistan with full enthusiasm.
“Despite this reality, at the time of the partition of India, a malicious conspiracy was hatched to deprive the people of IoK of their birth right to freedom. The people of IoK are protesting against this till today and striving for the completion of the unfinished agenda of the partition. I think that global conscience should support the people of IoK by keeping aside all other considerations,” he added.
He further said, “This is the era of the freedom of humanity which also ensures its protection. Established international norms and the United Nations Charter also endorse it.”
By following the same principles and value, the people of IoK started a movement for the realization of their inalienable birth right, but they had to face gross persecution and massacres, he said, adding, attempts were being made to deprive them of their motherland by changing its demography.
The president said, “This dire situation awakened the international conscience and the international community openly supported the struggle of Kashmiris.”
Resultantly, he mentioned, the Indian leadership was forced to pledge to the international community that it would not deprive the Kashmiris of their right to self-determination and this dispute would be resolved permanently through a free and fair plebiscite. Later, the Indian leadership reneged on their promises, he added.
He said, in this age of communication, the world was fully cognizant of the situation in IoK. Pakistan and other responsible states were drawing the attention of the international community towards this tyranny but the world had failed to end those Indian brutalities, he added.
“We believe that turning a blind eye towards the atrocities being committed in IoK will complement the obnoxious practice of the oppression of weak and impoverished nations which will be devastating for the international peace,” he added.
The president said despite of the massacres, mass graves and atrocities committed by the Indian occupation forces and Hindu extremists the freedom movement of Kashmir continues with full vigour.
“Being aware of immense courage and passion for freedom of Kashmiris, I believe that this unprecedented movement of human history will achieve the desired objective,” he added.
He said all enlightened circles of the world were with the people of IoK for the restoration of their fundamental right to freedom. On the other hand, the powers which were turning a blind eye towards the brutalities being unleashed in IoK for the sake of their petty interests would not be forgiven in the history of mankind, he added.
“Therefore, I invite all the independent and prudent nations to support the legitimate struggle of the people of IoK to save the world from a grave human tragedy,” he added.
The president demanded that all political prisoners in IoK should be released, right to freedom of expression should be restored, use of fire-arms against innocent civilians and their persecution should be stopped.
India should withdraw its draconian laws, leadership of IoK should be permitted to travel abroad, international human rights observers should be allowed to work in IoK, he added.
He said, “We also call upon the United Nations to fulfil its promises to the people of IoK because the solution of this longstanding issue is only possible through a free and fair plebiscite in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations.”
He said, “February 5, in our national history is a day on which people from Azad Kashmir, IoK and Pakistan unanimously reaffirm that Kashmir belongs to Kashmiris and its future is to be decided by the people of Kashmir.”
The people of IoK did not accept and recognize the Indian occupation and they would not do so in the future, also, he added.
“On this day, I along with the whole nation reiterate that we are for Kashmiris and Kashmiris are for us. There is no difference between us, we were one, are one and will always remain one. Insha Allah.”
The president also prayed to Allah Almighty to end the darkness of tyranny and oppression in IoK. “May the sacrifices of Kashmiris be rewarded and may there be an early dawn of their independence.”

Minister for Defense Engr Khurram Dastgir, while speaking on the occasion, said the efforts to change demographics of the IoK were unacceptable.
He said India was answerable for every drop of blood-shedding in Kashmir and Pakistan demanded an international inquiry of those atrocities.
The defense minister said India had increased cease-fire violations along the Line of Control. He warned that any aggression by India would be met with a befitting response, and the type of response, place and intensity would be decided by Pakistan.
Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Maulana Fazalur Rehman said the freedom struggle of Kashmiris would achieve success and Kashmir would become part of Pakistan.
He said after the 9/11 the United States considered the freedom struggle as terrorism, which was a matter of grave concern.
Maulana Fazalur Rehman said as the nation was being divided through the fifth generation war, Pakistan needed to take strong decisions.
He urged the Indian leadership to move with sanity as their acts attitude had put the regional peace at stake.
President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Muhammad Masood Khan called upon India to end three-pronged war against Pakistan under which it was hurting the lives and properties of the innocent people of Azad Kashmir; indulging in the acts of subversion in various parts of Pakistan; and had closed the doors of diplomacy.
He said Azad Kashmir had become part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the time was not far away when the IoK would also join this mega project.
The AJK president said Kashmiris would never submit. Kashmiri martyrs were wrapped in Pakistani flag, a fact which India should realize, he added.
Chairman of APHC Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in his video message, said despite all the India atrocities the people of Kashmir would continue their freedom struggle.
Chief of Dukhtran-e-Millat Kashmir Asia Indrabi, in her video message, said Kashmir could never become part of India and the daughters of Kashmir would continue to fight for their just right and freedom.
Convener of APHC Ghulam Muhammad Safi said India in order to affect the freedom struggle was fanning sectarianism and killing the political activists in occupied Kashmir.
Secretary Information of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) Shafqat Mehmood said the whole nation was united on the cause of Kashmir. “There can be political differences, but as far as the issue of Kashmir is concerned, we are united,” he added.
PPP Senator and member of Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Rehman Malik said India wanted to turn the majority of Muslims in occupied Kashmir into minority, through Israeli model.
Chairperson of APHC’s Peace and Culture Committee Mishal Malik told participants of the seminar that Indian army did not hesitate in indulging violence even on her two-year old daughter and also strived to create hurdles in feeding her sibling.
She said India was not giving visas to her family for meeting with her husband and father.
Chairperson / President SASSI Dr Maria Sultan also addressed the seminar and highlighted her organization’s efforts to raise the issue of Kashmir at home and abroad.
Documentaries based on the Indian forces atrocities in occupied Kashmir were also played on the occasion.
