Embracing pre-screening habit may avoid stent, says cardiologist

0

ISLAMABAD, Feb 23 (APP):Assistant Professor of Cardiology at Pakistan Institution of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Dr Syed Nasir Ali Friday urged the public to adopt the habit of pre-screening for cardiovascular disease to avoid the stents due to which citizens have to bear the heavy expenses.
In an Interview with APP he said due to increased number of heart
patients it was imperative to sensitize people to adopt healthy
dietary habits and ensure daily exercise.
The use of fast food, cold drinks, smoking, working in smoking
environment and double jobs were major reason of cardiac and
hypertension diseases, he added.
Responding to a question he said stents were needed to be deployed
only when there persists 75 percent hindrance in the flow of blood to
heart.
He also identified remedies through drug treatment and chemical
therapy where stents can be avoided in some certain cases.
He negated that the doctors are installing stents unnecessarily to the
patients for financial gains. “It is not a blind procedure as patient
is being provided with recordings after surgery and it can be counter
checked from other doctors,” he clarified.
On rumors about fake stents, he said, major beneficiaries of this
negative campaign were quacks enticing patients toward drug treatment.
“Because without this procedure the patients have to take medicines
for a long period of life” he added.
The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) was live to the issue and banning substandard/unregistered stents sold in the market, he added.
He said a single stent costs Rs 100,000-1, 50,000 to entitled patients while private hospitals had their own packages.
“Patients must go through appropriate post surgery treatment including proper care and strictly following doctors’ prescriptions to avoid procedural flaws.
“Men are more prone to heart diseases as compared to women due to presence of protected hormones against cardiac diseases”, he added.

Ignite helps to develop Coronary Stent system for low cost stent

0

ISLAMABAD, Feb 23 (APP):Ignite under Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has funded academia and
industry linkage projects to develop Coronary Stent system, along with non-invasive monitoring
capabilities.

Talking to APP, Dr Murtaza Najabat Ali said the purpose of the project is to develop stent system
integrated with a smart displacement sensor; this diagnostic tool will be consolidated with a Radio
Frequency (RF) component.

He said “with the research grant given by Ignite we are doing research work that would help
us to develop the system that will combine the advantages of a Coronary Stent system,
along with non-invasive monitoring capabilities.”

Through this project stage and progression of disease as well as any changing in-vivo
conditions may be monitored by an external RF component, which can provide clinicians
with real time patient alerts, he added.

In case of ambulatory patients who are not hospitalized, the ex-vivo (or active component)
of the RF device can prompt the patient about their hospital visits, based on any changes
in the internal pathology sensed by the in-vivo passive RF component.

Along with the modification of the treatment plan without the need of expensive or invasive
diagnostic procedures, this novel stent can act as a real-time monitoring system and help
enormously in preventing problems caused by delay in diagnosis or treatment.

CEO Ignite Yousaf Hussain said, Ignite also funds academia and industry projects with
strong, well-articulated commercial potential and intent.

Last year projects funded include a smart stent, which detects slippage, clotting and re-stenosis
, an IoT based water management system that detects moisture in the air and fluid in the ground,
an AR remedial system that improves motor, cognitive and functional skills in neurologically
challenged children, and AI based bovine disease diagnostic that improves dairy production
and life of cows.

Saudi Arabia, China, Turkey block US move to put Pakistan on terror-financing list: Report

0

NEW YORK, Feb 22 (APP):Saudi Arabia, Turkey and China this week formed a trio to block a US-led move to place Pakistan on an international terror-financing watch list, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
Washington was reportedly working behind-the-scenes during the ongoing Paris meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to take action against Pakistan, which it claims has not acted against terrorist financing and the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions, the report said.
All three nations have strong relations with Pakistan, cooperating militarily, diplomatically and economically. The joint opposition against the US motion came after Pakistan appealed for support, resulting in the country being given a three-month postponement of the verdict.
The report said this was one of the “rare disagreements” between Saudi Arabia and the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Officials involved in the process told The Wall Street Journal on Thursday that a US effort to reverse the decision on the watch list was under way at the FAFT meeting.
“We’re anticipating that the final decision would be made on Thursday of this week,” Heather Nauert, a US State Department spokeswoman said.
The officials from the countries on the task force said Saudi Arabia was acting on behalf of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Saudi-dominated bloc of six Persian Gulf nations which are collectively a member of the FATF.
