LONDON, Apr 01 (APP):Nissan has announced plans to bring its low-cost Datsun brand to Pakistan in 2019, becoming the latest global
carmaker aiming to boost sales in one of the world’s fastest-growing car markets,Financial Times reported.
According to the paper, Japan’s second-largest carmaker revived the Datsun, the low-budget hatchback,
in 2014 after more than 30 years of absence to help expand sales emerging markets where it had previously
struggled to sell its own-brand cars.
“Nissan should be there. It is an important market for us,” Peyman Kargar, Nissan’s senior vice-president,
said. “It’s good timing for us. It’s not too late and it’s not too soon.”
The Financial Times further said that the lower interest rates have made it easier for Pakistanis to
borrow money, while ministers have allowed carmakers to bring in plant equipment duty-free in an effort
to encourage them to set up assembly plants in the country.
It added that in 2016-2017, carmakers sold 185,781 vehicles in Pakistan, up 18 per cent from five
years ago, according to the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers’ Association. Of that total, Suzuki, Honda
and Toyota made all but seven of the country’s domestically manufactured cars.
Honda began producing motorcycles in Pakistan from the mid-1960s and vehicles from 1994, while
Toyota and Suzuki entered the market in the 1970s.
Nissan expects the market to further expand to 330,000 vehicles by 2024-2025.
Nissan will produce the Datsun brand with its local partner Ghandhara, which will invest $41m over the first
four years in a project that will create more than 1,800 jobs.
The Japanese car group first entered into a partnership with Ghandhara in 1983 and began local production of
its vehicles from 1996,the paper said.
But it halted sales of its Sunny saloon from 2004 following efficiency and quality challenges, and an attempt
to restart production in 2009 ended a year later.
“This agreement will introduce world-class facilities and the best of Japanese engineering technologies,” Ahmed
Kuli Khan Khattak, the chief executive of Ghandhara, Financial Times him said.
In addition to Nissan, others are on their way. South Korea’s Hyundai recently broke ground on a new
assembly plant in Faisalabad, with the first cars due to roll off the factory line in December 2019,Financial
Times said.
France’s Renault, which has an alliance with Nissan, and Germany’s Volkswagen are both planning to establish
factories in Pakistan,the paper said.

Trump administration’s move to include “citizenship” clause in Census seen mala-fide

0

WASHINGTON, April 1 (APP):The decision by the Trump administration to include a Citizenship question to the 2020 census is drawing criticism from Democrats and rights activists who see the proposed changes as a political move as part of crackdown on country’s millions of undocumented immigrants.
“I want to say in no uncertain terms I think this is an absolutely awful decision,” D. Sunshine Hillygus, professor at Duke University who serves on the Census Scientific Advisory Committee told online News magazine The Hill, saying she was dumfounded by the decision which she said would largely be viewed as a political decision.
The skepticism over the proposed amendment is rooted in the anti-immigration policies of President Trump who, since taking over the White House last year, has announced several measures against undocumented aliens and has even proposed to tighten the legal immigration.
An estimated 11 million immigrants are seen as living in the country without any legal documents and many face deportation. A recent decision to end a program, that provided protection to an estimated 800,000 children brought by their parents and called “Dreamers” for their educational pursuit.
The US Census Bureau this month decided to include the question on citizenship to the 2020 Census, saying this will help protect minority rights.
But liberal opponents expressed skepticism over the proposed move which they said was designed to reduce their representation in Congress and federal funding for local jurisdiction.
Federal funding is provided in proportion to state’s population and rights activists fear that due to fear over crackdown on immigrants, many aliens would not take part in the census and would thus undermine the credibility of population data.
Several states, including New York and California, have announced they would challenge the move in courts. The question was last included in the 1950 Census. Some of the experts believe the Trump administration could win legal challenges over the citizenship question.
“Because it is viewed as a strictly political decision, I think it doesn’t matter how much the Census Bureau says we will keep your data confidential,” said professor Hillygus, who observed that this would fuel the perception that the data would be used against non-citizens.

Imran has to do the same next time, “he should just tell people to vote directly for
the arrow, instead of getting them to vote for the bat.”
“When you voted for the PTI in the last election, you hoped Imran will work for
you, make new roads in Swat, however, he spent the whole term in blocking roads
in Punjab and the Federal Capital.”

US blocks UN Security Council statement on Israel violence in Gaza

0

UNITED NATIONS, April 1 (APP):The United States has blocked a UN Security Council statement on Israel’s use of deadly force against Palestinians commemorating Land Day in Gaza.
Kuwait, which represents Arab countries on the council, presented the proposed statement, which called for an “independent and transparent investigation” of the violence.
Israeli troops killed sixteen Palestinians on Friday as 30,000 Gazans staged a protests along Gaza-Israeli border as part of a series of mass protests slated to continue for weeks. More than 1,400 others sustained injuries.
On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Israeli troops for killing the Palestinians and claimed their actions were aimed at guarding Israel.
Meanwhile, human rights organization Amnesty International has condemned the Tel Aviv regime’s policies of land confiscation and dispossession, calling on Israeli authorities to stop them.
The Britain-based organization, in a post published on its official Twitter page on Friday, stated Israel’s policies of land theft exacerbate the sufferings of the Palestinian nation, and deprive them of their basic rights.
The draft council statement also expressed “grave concern at the situation at the border.” And it reaffirmed “the right to peaceful protest” and expressed the council’s “sorrow at the loss of innocent Palestinian lives.”
The statement was issued on Friday when at least 17 Palestinians lost their lives and more than 1,400 others sustained injuries when Israeli military forces opened fire on thousands of protesters who had flocked to a sit-in near the Gaza border.
The Israeli military on Saturday night identified 10 of the 16 people reported killed during violent protests along the Gaza security fence as members of Palestinian terrorist groups, and published a list of their names and positions in the organizations.
The draft statement was circulated to the council on Friday, but on Saturday the United States raised objections and said it did not support its adoption, a Security Council diplomat said.
The proposed statement also called “for respect for international human rights law and international humanitarian law, including protection of civilians.”
Council members “called upon all sides to exercise restraint and prevent a further escalation,” the draft said. The proposed statement stressed the need to promote peace between Israel and the Palestinians based on a two-state solution.
The Palestinian Authority on Saturday blamed the US and Britain for obstructing the Palestinian and Arab effort to persuade the Security Council to issue a resolution blasting Israel for the 16 Palestinian fatalities.
Yusef al Mahmoud, spokesperson for the PA government in Ramallah, said that Washington and London’s opposition to a resolution condemning Israel “turns them into accomplices in the horrific massacre committed by the Israeli occupation army against our defenseless people.”
Mahmoud accused the US and Britain of displaying “bias in favor of oppression and suppression.” He claimed that the Friday protests were “peaceful marches and demonstrations” to mark the 42nd anniversary of Land Day.
The Israeli government alone, he charged, was “directly responsible for this dreadful massacre, which resulted in 16 martyrs and hundreds of wounded.”
