LAHORE, May 03 (APP):Sports Board Punjab will hold Inter-Division Punjab Open Boxing Championship (boys and girls) from May 12 to 15.
The event will be held under the slogan of ‘Kaun Banay Ga Punjab
Ka Boxing Champion? (Who will be the boxing champion of Punjab?).
A spokesman for the SBP said on Thursday the Championship is being organised on the instructions of Secretary Sports Punjab Muhammad Aamir Jan to promote the game in the province.
“The competition will be conducted in 26 weight categories and
three classes — Youth Class (10 weight categories), Elite Class (10 weight categories) and Elite Female Class (6 weight categories),” he added.
He said that registration for the Boxing Championship has been completed in all districts of Punjab. “Trials for selection of teams will be held on May 5 and 6 at state-of-the-art Punjab Tennis Courts,”
he added.
“The winners of Championship will be awarded handsome cash prizes,” he added.
He said that top officials from Pakistan Olympic Association, Pakistan Boxing Federation, Punjab Boxing Association, Divisional and District officers have been invited to witness the bouts.

China sets up 75 overseas trade zones with Belt and Road countries: FM
BEIJING, May 3 (APP):China has set up 75 overseas trade and economic cooperation zones with countries along the Belt and Road route since its inception five years ago, Spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying Thursday said.
According to the data of the relevant Chinese authorities, from 2013 to 2017, the total imports and exports between China and countries along the route hit 33.2 trillion RMB, registering an annual average growth of 4% , which is higher than the average growth of China’s foreign trade over the same period, she said while responding to a question during her regular press briefing held here.
She said in the first quarter of this year, the total imports and exports between China and countries along the route grew by 12.9%, with 10.8% growth of exports and 15.7% growth of imports.
Hua said all this sheds light on the fact that though the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed by China, the opportunities and outcomes it offers are shared by the world.
“We welcome all countries to get aboard the express train of the Belt and Road Initiative that is bound for a bright future of common development and prosperity,” she added.
She said the idea and vision of the Belt and Road Initiative have been translated into action and reality, yielding fruitful outcomes and benefiting more and more countries and regions, adding, up to now over 80 countries and international organizations have inked cooperation agreements with China.
Responding to yet another question, she informed the Chinese government protects its citizens’ freedom of religious belief in accordance with the law.
“The Chinese people of all ethnic groups are entitled to full religious freedom under the law. This fact is there for all to see,” she added.
On deployment of missile system in Nansha Island, she said that China has indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and the adjacent waters.
“Our peaceful construction activities on the Nansha Islands, including the deployment of necessary national defense facilities, are meant to safeguard China’s sovereignty and security, which is also the rights a sovereign state is entitled to,” she added.
She stressed that China is a big country in terms of trade, and also a staunch champion of regional peace and stability, adding, “We will continue to work with all countries to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea.”
Next challenge for Pakistan to ensure fair distribution of wealth among people: Ahsan Iqbal
ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP):Minister for Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal Thursday said the government gave importance to infrastructure development in its five years and the next big challenge for Pakistan was to ensure fair distribution of wealth among people.
He was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new campus of Pakistan Institute of Development
Economics (PIDE) here.
He said traditions build an institution and it was the responsibility of the faculty and students of PIDE that they should take the institution to new heights of knowledge.
Ahsan said highest amount of funds in the history of Pakistan were allocated for Higher Education Commission (HEC).
The minister said, “We have to rectify our national narrative and in this respect universities have an important role to play. Universities should not be only for disbursing degrees.”
He said PIDE has the status of a think tank in economic matters of Pakistan, adding only those countries will make progress where people will get the opportunity to create wealth which is based on the economic growth.
The minister said the government gave importance to infrastructure development to connect the country with the backward
areas.
The Mirpur Muzaffarabad Mansehra Road was included in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) so that the
backward areas of Northern Region could take benefit, he added.
He said the annual average growth rate of five percent was maintained from the year 2013 to 2018.
He said in four years, 11000 megawatts of electricity were added to the national grid while in one year, the demand of
electricity increased by 2800 megawatts.
The aim of PIDE was to undertake research that could guide Pakistan to further progress. “We have to ensure that our
resources are rightly used in line with our priorities.” The world of today is of competitiveness and required world class capabilities
and the digital revolution has created new challenges. New and revolutionary projects have started in the field of technology. “Due
to our internal contradictions, we cannot achieve political stability in the last 70 years,” he remarked.
He said South Korea increased its exports from $200 million to $600 billion while our exports stayed at $24 billion.
“Today’s Pakistan is a shining Pakistan and those talking negatively all the time will be defeated in the election,” he added.
COAS, UAE ambassador discuss projects
RAWALPINDI, May 3 (APP):United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Pakistan Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Al Zaabi Thursday called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa at General Headquarters.
During the meeting, matters of mutual interest and UAE-Pakistan Assistance Programme (UPAP) projects under execution in Pakistan were discussed, an ISPR press release said.
Later on, an MoU was also signed for continuing UPAP projects for social development in remote areas of Pakistan.
Treasury benches term budget pro-poor, growth-oriented; opposition criticizes specific budgetary steps
ISLAMABAD, May 03 (APP):The Senators from the treasury benches Thursday termed the federal budget for the financial
year 2018-19 as balanced, pro-poor and growth-oriented whilst the opposition criticized it as
anti-poor, anti-labour.
Resuming debate on the federal budget, Parliamentary leader of Pakistan Muslim League
(Functional)Syed Muzafar Hussain Shah said the country’s growth was low, inflation was high,
foreign exchange reserves were minimal and budget deficit was higher when the government
of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz took over in 2013.
He said economic indicators had registered significant improvement during the tenure of
incumbent government. Agriculture sector development was specially focused during the tenure
of the incumbent government, he added.
He said that for the first time, agriculture sector growth had witnessed 3.8 percent growth
ratio while production of main crops including rice, sugarcane, wheat had also increased.
“The production targets of wheat, cotton had been achieved due to steps taken by the
government,” he added.
He said Pakistan has exported wheat for the first time in history, however, he lamented
that sugarcane farmers had not been given the announced price of the product.
He suggested to strengthen and streamline Pakistan Agriculture Research Council.
He also appreciated the higher allocation of Benazir Bhutto Income Support Programme
and steps taken by the government for the improvement of law and order situation in the
country.
He suggested the government to decrease taxes on poultry industry and livestock.
Chaudhary Tanvir Khan congratulated the finance team for announcing such a
pro-people budget in difficult time.
He said he has forwarded 23 recommendations to finance committee and hoped that at
least his 17 recommendations would be incorporated in the final budget recommendations to
be forwarded to the National Assembly by Senate for implementation.
Deploring outburst during finance minister’s budget speech in the National Assembly, he
said the behavior of opposition was deplorable and condemnable.
Tanvir Khan said that law and order situation has registered marked improvement in the
country during the last five years and credit must be given to former Prime Minister Nawaz
Sharif on the accomplishment.
He said that the credit of eliminating loadshedding and starting mega development projects
goes to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Chaudhary Tanvir said that due respect should be given to the leaders, who had worked hard
for the development of the country. He said like Charter of Democracy, a charter of economy should
also be signed for country’s progress.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Senator Samina Saeed termed the budget anti-poor and anti labour.
She said it was unfortunate that budget had been presented without announcing the National Finance
Commission (NFC) Award.
She claimed that additional burden had been put on the poor segments of the society.
She also criticized the federal government for not focusing on the education and health
sector.
Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian Senator Imamuddin Shouqeen said that the present
government had no moral justification to present federal budget.
He also criticized the government for announcing tax amnesty scheme. Nothing had been announced
in the budget for the benefit of middle class, he added.
He claimed figures mentioned in the budget document had no relation with reality.
Participating in Budget debate, Senator Mian Raza Rabbani said there was no need to announce the federal budget as presenting budget is breach of the privilege on the incoming Parliament.
He criticized the government for not announcing the National Finance Commission Award (NFC). Development funds had been slashed by 20 percent. He termed budget anti- labor and people-enemy. “Minimum wages of the labor had not been increased
by the government,” he added.
Rabbani also criticized increasing levy on petroleum products announced by the government in the federal budget. It was unfortunate that 18th amendment had been roll backed by the government.
He said that the government had not allocated enough funds for the education and health sectors.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Brig. (R) John Kenneth Williams said that no relief had been announced for commonman in
the budget. “This budget is not catering the requirements of the majority of the people in the country,” he added.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Nauman Wazir Khattak said that nothing had been announced in the budget for the
masses.
He suggested the government to announce 3 percent funds in the National Finance Commission Award for FATA.
Jamiat-Ulema-e-Islam (F) Molvi Faiz Muhammad said wealth should be distributed among the masses as per Islamic
teachings.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Fida Muhammad rejected the budget as nothing had been announced in it for poor.
He said the budget is not people friendly.
President administers oath to Barrister Usman as federal minister

ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP):President Mamnoon Hussain on Thursday administered oath to Barrister Usman Ibrahim as federal minister, a statement from the President House said.
He was earlier serving as the Minister of State for the Ministry of Human Rights.

Pakistan Navy launched Mangroves Plantation Campaign 2018
ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP):Pakistan Navy has launched “Pakistan Navy – Mangroves Plantation Campaign 2018” in line with the government’s vision of “Green Pakistan”.
It is the third campaign of this series which entails an effort to plant about two million mangroves in the coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan provinces during next one year.
Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi was the chief guest and inaugurated Pakistan Navy Mangroves Plantation Campaign at Shah Bandar, a message received here Thursday said.
It said that mangroves were vital for coastal ecosystem, prevention of sea intrusion and sustaining marine life while these gifts of nature were diminishing in the face of economic development and demands for domestic needs. Pakistan Navy (PN) being a major stakeholder of the maritime domain realized the importance of mangroves for marine life and took a major initiative to revive Mangrove forests all along the coast. Apart from mangroves plantation, Pakistan Navy had also launched maritime economy awareness campaign, it added.
Addressing the ceremony, chief of the naval staff stressed that deforestation of mangroves had not only affected biodiversity of our coastal areas but also livelihoods of coastal communities. This situation essentially necessitates focused attention and coordinated efforts from all walks of the society.
In this context Pakistan Navy – Mangroves Plantation Campaign is an initiative to plant additional mangroves as well as to create awareness among the masses about the significance of mangroves to support the nature. He highlighted that since 2016, PN has planted more than two million mangroves along the coast from Shah Bandar to Jiwani.
He urged all stakeholders including federal and provincial departments and civil society to play their due role and join hands with Pakistan Navy in noble cause of protecting marine ecology.
Speaking on the occasion, Country Head of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Mahmood Akhtar Cheema said the role of Pakistan Navy in plantation of mangroves forests is unprecedented.
Later, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mehmood Abbasi visited forward bases of Pakistan Navy in creek areas and interacted with the officers and men.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by a large number of senior military and civil officials including federal and provincial parliamentarians, representatives from business community, World Wildlife Fund, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), fishery folk society and officials from Forest Department, Sindh.
IIA becomes operational with arrival, departure of several int’l, domestic flights
ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP):Islamabad International Airport (IIA) Thursday became operational with the departure and arrival of international and domestic flights.
“By the grace of Allah Almighty, the state-of-the-art IIA has become fully operation today. Several flights departed and arrived at the new airport today as scheduled,” Director General of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Usaid-ur-Rehman told APP.
He expressed the hope that the IIA would give boost to aviation industry in the country. He said the airport was equipped with modern technologies and could be compared with world’s best airports.
“We’ve installed top of the line and state-of-the-art system at airport. Its passenger facilitation, baggage handling and traffic management matches international standards” he said.
He said the annual turnover of passengers at the old airport (Benazir Bhutto International Airport) was about 4.5 million but the IIA could accommodate over nine million passengers annually.
“This is the largest airport of the country. It is equipped with modern technologies and facilities for passengers to meet the 21st century challenges. I’m sure it has all the potential to be among top 10 airports of the world,” Deputy Director General of CAA Amir Mehboob said.
He said besides serving nine million passengers the airport was capable to handle 50,000 metric tons cargo every year in its first phase. “The modular design of the airport enables the expansion to serve up to 25 million passengers every year by 2025,” he added.
Amir informed that the IIA had two runways – the one was primary while the other was secondary. The airport’s inside, he said had facilities such as taxiways including six taxi links, three rapid taxi ways and five aprons, including cargo apron.
“This airport has an integrated building management system, which has been designed to keep track and control various systems in passenger terminal building.
“The integrated aircraft stand system installed at the airport allows airport operators to monitor the use of equipment and the apron from a single source,” he said.
Director Planning and Development of CAA, Nadar Sahfi said the airport operations control centre at the IIA was ultramodern with focus on end-to-end processes of operations and bringing together three major operational areas for departing and arriving passengers, baggage and aircraft.

LAHORE, May 03 (APP):A delegation of foreign investors led by Aqeel Karim Dhedhi, Chairman of AKD Group called on Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, here Thursday.
Talking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said Pakistani economy was progressing rapidly, adding that growth rate had remained 5.75 percent during the current fiscal year. Due to solid economic policies of the government, he said, investors’ trust had been increased as Pakistan was the best market for investment and foreign investors should take full benefit of such wonderful opportunities. He said incidents of terrorism had been decreased to a great extent during the present government and peace had been restored in Karachi. He said CPEC had created tremendous opportunities and the investors should come forward to reap the benefits.
Shehbaz Sharif said a new history had been written in Pakistan by completing the energy projects in a record period of time. He maintained that three gas-based electricity generation projects had been installed and Punjab government was also setting up another 1260 megawatt gas-based plant. “We have completed projects with transparency, speed and high-quality,” he added.
Foreign investors said Pakistan was the best country with regard to investment and the emerging market was very attractive for the investors. “You have provided conducive atmosphere for investment by employing your vision and hard work,” they further said.

CM condemns Attock suicide attack
LAHORE, May 03 (APP):Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday strongly condemned suicide attack near employees’ vehicle in Attock.
He expressed deep sense of sorrow and grief over deaths and paid rich tributes to the persons who have embraced martyrdom.
He extended sympathies to the bereaved families and directed the administration to provide best healthcare facilities to the injured.
The Chief Minister also sought a report from the DPO Attock.
