Murder accused of university student arrested in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Jun 16 (APP):Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police have arrested the main suspect involved in the brutal murder of a 22-year-old female student of the International Islamic University, tracing the blind case through modern investigation techniques, said Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Islamabad Muhammad Jawad Tariq on Monday.
DIG Tariq held a press conference at Rescue 15, where he was accompanied by SSP Investigations, SP Saddar Zone, DSP CIA, and other senior police officers. He said the suspect, identified as Feroz, a resident of Jhang, had gone into hiding after committing the crime.
DIG Tariq said the accused had entered the Kainat Girls Hostel with criminal intent and opened fire, which resulted in the tragic death of the university student, Imaan.
DIG Tariq said multiple police teams were formed under the supervision of SSP Operations and SSP Investigations, which worked round the clock using Safe City camera footage, sketches of the suspect, and videos obtained from nearby buildings to track down the accused.
DIG Tariq said the arrested suspect has a criminal history, including cases of rape and several incidents of motorcycle theft.
DIG said a case has been registered against the accused, and a thorough investigation is underway. He said the accused will be presented in court with solid evidence to ensure he receives appropriate punishment.

Matric annual results on July 24

LAHORE, Jun 16 (APP): The annual matriculation results will be announced on July 24.
Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) sources here said that All education boards across Punjab will release the results at the same time.
According to sources, this date was finalised in the meeting of the Punjab Board Committee of Chairman.
The release of results is being delayed due to incomplete marking of papers in the education boards.

Pakistan Railways delegation visits PITB

LAHORE, Jun 16 (APP):A delegation from Pakistan Railways visited the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to discuss ongoing IT interventions and explore opportunities for future collaboration aimed at modernizing railway operations through digital transformation.
The visiting delegation was led by Pakistan Railways Director IT Syed Ali Raza, and included senior officials Abdul Qayyum, Khurram Shahzad, and Syed Zafar Gilani. During the session, Syed Ali Raza provided a detailed overview of the current digital systems being implemented within the Railways and shared insights into the department’s upcoming IT-driven initiatives.
The PITB team, led by Additional Director General (ADG) Syed Qasim Ifzal, presented an overview of PITB’s flagship digital governance projects, highlighting successful implementations across various government departments. PITB Joint Director Arsalan Manzoor was also present during the meeting.
The visit concluded with a tour of PITB’s state-of-the-art Data Center, where the delegation took keen interest in PITB’s digital infrastructure and discussed potential areas for integration and support in line with Pakistan Railways’ long-term digital strategy.
In his message, PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf remarked, “PITB is committed to empowering public institutions like Pakistan Railways with secure, scalable digital solutions that enhance efficiency and transparency. This collaboration marks a step forward in modernizing services through technology.”
The Pakistan Railways delegation appreciated PITB’s efforts and expressed interest in continued coordination to bring modern, efficient, and citizen-centric systems to the country’s rail network.

UN rights chief urges Pakistan & India to uphold ceasefire, restore water-sharing treaty

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 16 (APP): UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has called on Pakistan and India to uphold the ceasefire following their recent four-day conflict, and to restore “essential” water-sharing arrangements between the two South Asian countries.

“I urge both India and Pakistan to ensure the ceasefire holds, to prevent hateful rhetoric and disinformation, and to re-establish essential water sharing arrangements,” Turk told the Human Rights Council as he presented his annual report to the 47-member body in Geneva on Monday.

His call for restoring water-sharing arrangements was aimed at India which suspended the1960 Indus waters treaty governing water sharing with Pakistan.

RPO rejects appeals of four cops against dismissal from service

MULTAN, Jun 16 (APP):Regional Police Officer (RPO) Multan, Captain (Retired) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry, rejected appeals of four police officials against their dismissal from service after finding allegations against them to be true.
Presiding over an Orderly Room session to hear appeals filed by police officers and personnel on Monday, the RPO rejected appeals of ASI Muhammad Irshad, head constable Sajid Amir, and constables Adeel Ahmed and Hamza Haider, upholding the decision of their dismissal from service.
However, Muhammad Ahmed and Muhammad Saqib, who had also challenged their dismissal, were reinstated to their posts, with a penalty of one-year increment stoppage.
Similarly, head constables Sajjad Hussain and Zafar Iqbal, who were earlier demoted, were restored to their original rank of Assistant Sub Inspector with a one-year increment stoppage as a disciplinary measure.
RPO Sohail Chaudhry emphasized that a transparent and uniform accountability process is being ensured within the police department, which has contributed to boosting the morale of the force.
He further directed that police officers and personnel from the Multan region, whose appeals are still pending submission, should file these immediately so that timely decisions can be made.

SAARC former president hails CM Punjab for pro-poor, tax-free budget

LAHORE, Jun 16 (APP): SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry former president Iftikhar Ali Malik on Monday congratulated Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif for presenting a pro-poor, development-oriented, and tax-free provincial budget for the fiscal year 2025–26.
In his statement, he praised the tax-free nature of the budget, noting that it would help alleviate the financial burden on common citizens while enhancing business confidence, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He expressed hope that efficient and transparent implementation of the budgetary measures would bring tangible improvements in the quality of life for the people of Punjab and serve as a model for other provinces.
