ECP notifies Hina Arshad Warraich’s victory in PP-52 Sialkot by-polls

ISLAMABAD, Jun 05 (APP):The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially notified Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Hina Arshad Warraich as winner of the PP-52 Sialkot by-election, solidifying her position in the Punjab Assembly.
Warraich secured a commanding victory, defeating her closest rival, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Fakhir Nishat Ghumman in a closely watched contest.
The by-election was necessitated following the demise of Chaudhry Arshad Warraich, Hina’s father, who had won the seat in the February 8 general elections on a PML-N ticket.
With this victory, PML-N further strengthens its hold in Punjab, with analysts viewing Warraich’s success as a significant political gain for the party.

During the meeting, key recommendations were proposed to make the scheme more effective and better aligned with the national agenda for export growth and protection of local industry.

Govt. achieves Rs4 trn national development outlay three years ahead of schedule: Ahsan Iqbal

ISLAMABAD, Jun 5 (APP):Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday said the incumbent government had achieved a significant milestone by preparing a Rs4 trillion national development outlay for the fiscal year 2025–26, in just the second year of its five-year term, a target originally scheduled for 2028–29.
Speaking to the media at the launch of the Monthly Development Plan, he credited improved governance, enhanced provincial coordination, and robust tax collection as key drivers behind the country’s early achievement of major development targets.
He praised the government’s fiscal management, particularly in tax collection, saying “The government has increased tax collection by 29 percent. This increase has directly contributed to higher provincial incomes and enabled us to enhance our national development outlay.”
Although, he said, federal development spending had slightly decreased, the rise in provincial budgets, driven by increased fiscal transfers, had more than compensated. “The overall national development outlay has not decreased; rather, it has significantly increased compared to last year,” he added.
The minister reaffirmed confidence in achieving a 4.2 percent GDP growth rate this year, projecting a climb to 6 percent by the final year of the current five-year plan.
He said sectoral growth targets for 2029 include 5.1 percent in agriculture, 7.2 percent in industry, and 6.2 percent in services, expanding Pakistan’s GDP to $600 billion and raising per capita income to $2,000.
“We have a broader vision of transforming Pakistan into a $1 trillion economy by 2035. If we can reach $600 billion by 2029, adding another $400 billion over the next five to seven years is certainly within reach,” he said.
Outlining strategic priorities for the coming year, Ahsan Iqbal said the government’s focus would be on “governance, innovation, and reform” to maintain growth momentum.
He also announced the launch of a new anti-corruption hotline to engage citizens in monitoring public sector spending.
“We must ensure maximum value for every rupee spent. That means eliminating waste, duplication, and corruption,” he said, stressing that good governance was “not a luxury, but a necessity for sustainable development.”
In a major positive development, the minister highlighted that headline inflation had dropped to 3.5 percent in May 2025, down sharply from 11.8 percent a year earlier. “Only a few countries in the world have managed to bring double-digit inflation down so drastically in such a short time,” he noted.
The minister said foreign remittances had also seen a considerable jump, with inflows increasing by $10 billion over the past three years. “Our remittances have grown from $27 billion to $37 billion,” he shared, crediting the Pakistani diaspora for their resilience and patriotism.
He paid tribute to overseas Pakistanis, who continued to support the country despite negative calls from some political figures. “Some leaders made statements I consider economic terrorism, urging people to break IMF agreements or shut down national institutions abroad. But the overseas community stood firm and increased remittances by $10 billion. Every dollar they sent played a vital role in Pakistan’s development,” he observed.
Sharing recent financial successes, the minister said Pakistan had posted a $1.9 billion current account surplus between July and April — a sharp reversal from a $1.3 billion deficit during the same period last year.
He also revealed that improved project evaluation by the Planning Commission had saved the national treasury Rs5.4 billion last month. “Better scrutiny and smarter planning make a big difference,” he said.
Turning to national security, the minister mentioned a high-level, single-agenda meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended by key national leadership, including representatives from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
“The agenda was clear, crafting a unified national strategy to counter Indian aggression and provocations,” he said, warning India against weaponizing water resources, which he described as a violation of international agreements. “Pakistan’s water rights are not a favor from India, they are protected by international treaties,” he asserted.
Ahsan Iqbal said that just as Pakistan’s armed forces had shattered India’s arrogance on the battlefield, the country would counter India’s economic and political hostility with unity, resilience, and adherence to international law.
He said India’s use of water as a political tool had led to increasing diplomatic isolation. “India is now alone, using weapons that have no legitimacy or support in the civilized world,” he said.
The minister said Pakistan would focus on the fast-track completion of ongoing water reservoir projects.
Accordingly, he said, a high-level committee, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister, has been constituted to submit workable recommendations within 72 hours to ensure timely, and potentially accelerated,  completion of these projects.
Following Eid ul Azha, the minister announced, a National Water Conference would be convened to deliberate on the country’s water challenges and gather expert opinion from across the nation to develop a comprehensive and effective plan.

Pakistan reaffirms commitment to environmental protection on World Environment Day 2025

ISLAMABAD, Jun 05 (APP):Pakistan has joined the global community in commemorating World Environment Day on Thursday reaffirming its dedication to addressing pressing environmental challenges and contributing to international efforts aimed at protecting the planet.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government described the day as a “significant opportunity to raise awareness about the urgent environmental challenges facing the world” and to “accelerate collective efforts” to address them.
Pakistan, among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, expressed appreciation for ongoing global initiatives to confront the “triple planetary crises” of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
The 2025 theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” was lauded by the Ministry as both “timely and vital,” given the increasing threat of plastic waste contaminating land, rivers, and oceans worldwide. The government emphasized that the theme closely aligns with Pakistan’s own national priorities.
In a landmark move this April, the Government of Pakistan launched the National Action Roadmap to Reduce Plastic Pollution, a strategic framework aimed at minimizing plastic waste through improved waste management practices and promoting circularity in the use of materials.
“Pakistan remains committed to playing its full part in addressing these critical environmental crises and in safeguarding our planet for future generations,” the statement concluded.

Haroon for urgent repair of Chashma Right Bank Canal

ISLAMABAD, Jun 5 (APP):Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Haroon Akhtar Khan here on Thursday directed all relevant departments to commence urgent repair and construction work of Chashma Right Bank Canal without delay.
The move aims to mitigate further damage and restore essential infrastructure in the affected areas, the assistant said while chairing an important meeting regarding the repair and strengthening of the Chashma Right Bank Canal infrastructure at Dera Ismail Khan.
According to press release, the participants discussed the serious issue of leakages observed at distributaries 14 and 15 near Head Jumma, along with the fragile and unreinforced canal banks posing a high risk of further deterioration.
Haroon said, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had always prioritized the issues faced by farmers and the Chashma Right Bank Canal was a critical source of irrigation water for a large number of agricultural communities.

ICCI to launch comprehensive dengue awareness campaign

ISLAMABAD, Jun 05 (APP):President of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Nasir Mansoor Qureshi, has emphasized that dengue prevention is a shared responsibility and affirmed ICCI’s commitment to facilitating awareness campaigns and anti-dengue spraying operations across major commercial and industrial areas of the capital in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
He made these remarks while addressing a largely attended Dengue Awareness Session organized by ICCI in collaboration with the District Administration, Islamabad Capital Territory.
The session aimed at mobilizing the business community and relevant institutions to take preventive action against the potential threat of dengue outbreaks.
Qureshi said that ICCI will actively mobilize its member associations and volunteers from various markets to support ongoing awareness efforts and promote community-level engagement.
“We believe in preventive and corrective measures rather than punitive actions, and therefore appreciate the District Administration’s decision to suspend inspection raids until June 20, giving traders time to ensure compliance with safety protocols,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of a coordinated approach, he urged that Ulemas be engaged to deliver dengue prevention messages in Friday sermons, and that educational institutions incorporate awareness content into their morning assemblies.
He also called for electronic media channels to fulfill their public service duty by airing dengue prevention messages as a core responsibility.
“The chamber will extend full logistical and communication support to distribute educational materials among business owners, workers, and the wider community,” he concluded.
Earlier, Dr Abdul Sattar, Dengue Focal Person at the Directorate of Health Services, CDA, delivered a detailed presentation outlining the causes of dengue larva growth, symptoms of the disease, and effective preventive measures.
In his welcome address, Senior Vice President ICCI Abdul Rehman Siddiqui reaffirmed ICCI’s dedication to public health and highlighted the Chamber’s efforts in partnership with the business community.
Delivering the closing remarks, Vice President ICCI Nasir Mehmood Chaudhry announced that soon after Eid-ul-Azha, the Chamber, in collaboration with all relevant departments, will launch an extensive awareness drive, including educational sessions in every major business hub.
The event concluded with a comprehensive question-and-answer session, providing attendees the opportunity to seek expert guidance.
