ISLAMABAD, Aug 13 (APP):Literary organizations and non-profit NGOs have urged the nation to plant saplings on Pakistan’s Independence Day instead of buying bells, noisy sirens, and crackers.
In an exclusive interview with APP, Director General (DG) of NLPD Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Mazhar on Wednesday said that it was an established reality that due to pollution, global warming has negatively affected the environment.
“We are making our world unlivable with each passing minute. If we don’t address the issue of climate change, our next generation will suffer greatly,” he warned.
“This Independence Day, lets take an oath to plant trees instead of buying items that contribute to the climate crisis, because a clean environment and pure oxygen are the rights of our generations to come,” he added.
He further urged the public to work for a pollution-free Pakistan. “We have planted a large number of saplings at the National Language Promotion Department, Islamabad in the past, and we are continuing this mission with passion,” he proudly shared.
Talking to APP, Zohaib Chaudhry, Director of Planning and Promotion at the literary organization Sadequain Foundation, said that as Pakistan celebrates its 78th Independence Day, citizens should honor the occasion in a way that truly serves the nation’s future.
“This year, instead of loud sirens, bells, or fireworks, let us mark 14th August by planting a sapling — a living symbol of hope, growth, and a greener Pakistan,” he urged.
Zohaib said that each tree planted today will provide shade, cleaner air, and a healthier tomorrow for generations to come. “Let’s celebrate our freedom by giving back to the land that gave us our identity,” he added.
Javeria Khan, a volunteer at a non-profit organization Rakhshanda Memorial, told APP, “As a social worker, I truly believe Independence Day should be celebrated in a way that benefits our future. Instead of creating noise and pollution, let’s gift our country greenery.”
“This August, with my team, we are planting 3,000 trees across Rawalpindi and Islamabad to ensure cleaner air and a healthier environment for the next generations,” she shared. She urged everyone to join hands and make this Independence Day truly green.
Ateeq Afridi, founder of a leading youth-led volunteer organization, in his Independence Day message, encouraged citizens to celebrate the day with actions that give back to the land. “Planting a tree is not just a tribute to Pakistan today — it’s a gift for generations to come,” he noted.
Rehan Khan, CEO of the non-profit organization Sidra Foundation, told APP that Pakistan is our homeland and it is everyone’s duty to work for its betterment.
He said Pakistan is facing a major climate crisis, adding that impactful change is the need of the hour. “Every year, I conduct many plantation drives across the country, in collaboration with other organizations working for the same cause, at schools, colleges, parks, and green belts, ensuring that the plants are properly taken care of,” he shared.
He urged the nation to buy a plant instead of noisy items this Independence Day, for a greener Pakistan and for the generations to come.

APP27-240525 LAHORE: May 24 - Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain chairs a meeting on Sugar Price at PASSCO office.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 13 (APP): Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain on Wednesday informed the National Assembly that the closure of Utility Stores Corporation (USC) was part of a phased restructuring process approved by a Cabinet Committee on Right-Sizing, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing losses.
In response to a point raised by Asifa Bhutto Zardari on point of order, he said that in initial step loss-making outlets were shut down besides releasing daily-wage staff. However, a separate package was formulated for contractual and regular employees to ensure their financial security, he said.
He said, “Permanent staff will be adjusted where possible, and those availing the package will receive payments running into billions of rupees as part of their severance”.
The minister said that the government was shifting towards direct cash transfers through a digital wallet system, citing the Rs20 billion Ramazan Package as an example where beneficiaries received funds directly instead of standing in long queues at USC. “By providing cash, people can buy items of their choice rather than being restricted to a limited range of products,” he said.
Rana Tanveer said that protests had taken place over the closures, including a sit-in. On the Prime Minister’s directions, Special Assistants to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar and Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah held talks with representatives of USC and they reached at some understandings.
He assured that house that a meeting with the relevant stakeholders could be arranged to discuss the matter further.
Earlier, Asifa Bhutto Zardari expressed concern over closure of USC and demanded of the government to reconsider its decision.
Rana Tanveer said he was ready to coordinate with parliamentary committees and relevant ministries, including the Interior Ministry, to review recommendations and forward them to the Cabinet for consideration.

Record starvation and malnutrition in Gaza; more West Bank displacement: UN

0

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 13 (APP): The United Nations continues to draw attention to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where starvation and malnutrition are at the highest levels since the Israeli war in the enclave began nearly three years ago.

That warning comes from the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in a tweet posted on Tuesday, calling for more aid to be allowed into the enclave by Israeli authorities.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported that five people died over the past 24 hours due to malnutrition and starvation, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in its latest update.

This brings the total number of malnutrition-related deaths to 227, including 103 children, since October 2023.

Humanitarians continue to decry the low level of supplies entering Gaza, which remains a fraction of what is needed to meet the immense needs of the roughly 2.1 million people living there.

One third of the population is not eating for days on end, and half a million are on the brink of starvation, WFP emphasised.

The agency is calling for at least 100 trucks a day to be allowed into Gaza, much faster approvals and clearances, and for no armed presence or shooting near humanitarian convoys and food distribution sites, among other measures.

Although the UN and partners continue to do everything possible to bring assistance in, humanitarian movements still face significant delays and other challenges.

UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric outlined the situation for reporters at the regular media briefing at Headquarters in New York.

He said on Monday humanitarians had formally asked Israel to coordinate 16 missions – including the collection of food, medical supplies, and fuel – from the Kerem Shalom and Zikim border crossings, the only two aid corridors in operation.

Other missions involved moving goods and personnel within Gaza, from south to north and within the southern part of the Strip.

“Out of the 16 missions, four were facilitated and three were denied; another four were impeded but eventually were fully accomplished,” he said.

Of the remaining missions, two were cancelled by the respective organizations and two more that involved the collection of food and health supplies from the Kerem Shalom crossing were impeded and unable to be completed. Another mission was impeded but was still ongoing.

“Efforts to coordinate humanitarian movements often drag on for hours due to unpredictable clearances by the Israeli authorities, wasting precious time,” he added.

OCHA also updated on the situation in the occupied West Bank, where another Palestinian Bedouin community was displaced on Monday due to violence by Israeli forces and settlers.

Israeli forces raided the community of Ein Ayoub in Ramallah governorate and ordered the immediate eviction of its roughly 100 Palestinian residents.

Many of these people have no alternative means of shelter, OCHA said.

Pakistan targets major boost in energy security with fresh exploration drive, NA told

0
ISLAMABAD, Aug 13 (APP):Minister of State for Petroleum Division Ali Pervaiz Malik on Wednesday informed  the National Assembly that Pakistan was set to accelerate oil and gas exploration both onshore and offshore, while also tapping unconventional reserves, as part of a government-led push to strengthen energy security and attract foreign investment.
Responding to a calling attention notice raised by Dr. Nafisa Shah and others regarding recent remarks by former US President Donald Trump about massive oil reserves in Pakistan, he said the country possessed significant untapped potential, including conventional onshore and offshore fields as well as unconventional sources such as tight gas, shale gas and shale oil.
He said that under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership, the government had successfully concluded an onshore bidding round in April, awarding 13 exploration blocks, including two to Turkish Petroleum for the first time.
Another onshore round for 23 blocks was under way, with awards expected in October, while offshore bidding covering around 40 blocks, including in the Indus and Gwadar belt, was also progressing.
The minister said developing a single onshore exploration well required around US$20–25 million in investment, while offshore wells could cost over US$120 million. International interest had been received from Turkish, Chinese, Kuwaiti and American companies.
On unconventional resources, he cited studies estimating Pakistan’s tight gas potential at 30–35 trillion cubic feet — roughly equivalent to three Sui gas fields — and noted that the policy for tight gas had been updated in 2024.
He said a USAID-supported 2015 assessment had found shale oil and gas resources in the Lower Indus Basin many times greater than Pakistan’s cumulative extraction over the past 70 years.
