MINSK, Dec 15 (BelTA/APP): Minsk has been decorated with 335 kilometers of light strings and 629 illuminated 3D figures for Christmas and New Year celebrations, Yevgeny Staselovich, First Deputy Director – Chief Engineer of the Minskgorsvet enterprise, told STV channel, BelTA has learned.

“Currently, Minskgorsvet has 335 km of light strings and 629 illuminated 3D figures on its books. This year saw an increase of over 30 km in light strings. It can be said that Minsk’s festive illumination consumes 700,000 kW per hour,” Yevgeny Staselovich said.

All festive lighting in the capital is now LED-based. The transition to LEDs for this purpose began approximately 15 years ago. “For comparison, an incandescent bulb from before consumed 15-25 W per single unit. Today, an entire meter of light string consumes less than 1 W,” the Minskgorsvet deputy director provided comparative figures.

Consumer cooperation system contributes 5-7% to Belarus’ key stabilization funds

MINSK, Dec 15 (BelTA/APP): Consumer cooperatives form 5-7% of the country’s stabilization funds for a number of commodities, Aleksei Sirotin, Head of the Procurement and Foreign Economic Activity Department of the Belarusian National Union of Consumer Societies Belkoopsoyuz said in a new episode of BelTA’s Nation Speaks project.

“The consumer cooperative system contributes between 5% and 7% to the national stabilization funds for a range of products. However, the primary role is played by agricultural producers and large farms, which provide a significant portion of the volumes,” Aleksei Sirotin said.

As a major organization, Belkoopsoyuz plans the further development of the stabilization fund system by expanding opportunities for producers and consumers through optimized logistics and storage. The organization operates 60 specialized storage facilities located in all regions of the country, with a one-time storage capacity of over 11,000 tonnes.

“These storage facilities are used for accepting products from agricultural producers, for their retrieval, and for long-term storage. They ensure current sales through 4,000 retail outlets in the consumer cooperation system, as well as mobile stores for remote areas, guaranteeing an uninterrupted supply for the population,” the department head said.

AL DHAFRA, Dec 15 (BelTA /APP): The Falcon Racing competition will kick on 15 December, as part of the Liwa International Festival 2026, with the participation of elite falconers and heritage enthusiasts, in an event that blends authenticity with advanced organisation and modern electronic timing systems.

Falcon Racing is considered one of the festival’s most prominent events, carrying strong cultural significance that reflects the deep-rooted connection between Emiratis and the traditional sport of falconry. The competition requires a high level of skill in training falcons, familiarising them with the race track, and applying the traditional “Da’wa” calling technique used at the finish line.

The competition will be held over three days. The first day, Monday, will feature the Owners’ Category (Farakh), allowing a maximum of four falcons per owner, with one falcon competing in each heat. The heats include the following categories: Gyr Shaheen, Gyr Peregrine, Gyr Qarmoosha, and Gyr Taba’a.

The competition will continue on the second day with the Professionals’ Category (Farakh), while the championship will conclude on the third day with the Jernas Category, amid expectations of highly competitive performances.

The organising committee has set the race distance at 400 metres, with participants required to be present at the race venue by 7:00 a.m., and the official start scheduled for 8:00 a.m., in line with the highest standards of safety and organisation applied to heritage competitions.

The organising committee confirmed that all preparations have been completed for the launch of the race, noting that registration was closed in accordance with the approved schedule, the draw for the heats has been conducted, and a maximum of 50 falcons per heat has been set to ensure fairness and healthy competition among participants.

Falcon Racing continues to attract strong public interest as part of the Liwa International Festival, serving as a key fixture in the heritage events calendar and playing an important role in preserving cultural traditions and passing them on to future generations.

China Focus: China steps up cultural heritage protection to keep its past alive for the future

0

BEIJING, Dec 15 (Xinhua/APP): China, a civilization with more than 5,000 years of history, is accelerating efforts to protect and carry forward its cultural heritage through stronger institutions, new technologies, expanding public cultural services, and deeper international cooperation.

From 2021 to 2025, four cultural sites — namely the Beijing Central Axis, an ensemble of ancient landmark structures; the Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of Jingmai Mountain in Pu’er; the Xixia Imperial Tombs dating from the 11th to 13th centuries; and the ancient maritime trade center of Quanzhou — were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Boasting a total of 60 sites, the country now ranks second globally, just behind Italy with 61 sites.

According to Xie Bing, deputy head of the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA), steady progress is being made to nominate additional sites, including Jingdezhen’s handmade porcelain industry heritage sites in Jiangxi, the Sanxingdui and Jinsha ruins in Sichuan, the ancient waterfront towns south of the Yangtze River, and the Maritime Silk Road.

Behind the expansion of China’s World Heritage roster is a growing national commitment to cultural heritage preservation. China has proposed advancing cultural heritage protection more systematically and placing it under unified supervision and inspection during the 2026-2030 development period.

This move builds on changes over the past five years, as the country moves away from a model focused mainly on emergency restoration toward one that integrates both rescue and preventive conservation, while placing greater emphasis on the meaningful use of cultural relics.

The legal framework has been strengthened. Sun Deli, deputy head of the NCHA, noted that China has now established a comprehensive legal system centered on the Law on the Protection of Cultural Relics, supported by six administrative regulations, 10 ministerial rules and more than 400 local regulations.

In March, a revised cultural relics protection law came into force, reaffirming the principles of prioritizing protection, strengthening management, and unlocking the value of cultural heritage. A series of policy documents at both national and local levels has ensured that territorial spatial planning aligns with cultural relics protection requirements.

Technological innovation has become another pillar of heritage protection. Satellite remote sensing, drone-based aerial surveys and AI-powered data analysis now enable continuous monitoring of the conditions of heritage sites, allowing risks to be detected and addressed at an early stage.

Digital technology is also transforming public access to cultural heritage. At the Longmen Grottoes in Henan, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000, more than two decades of 3D scanning and photogrammetry have created detailed digital archives of its Buddhist sculptures. In Gansu Province, the Dunhuang Academy has released high-definition images of 30 Mogao Grottoes — a World Heritage site since 1987 — allowing global audiences to explore the ancient caves virtually.

Meanwhile, expanding public cultural services have made heritage more accessible. Across China, more than 7,000 museums — over 91 percent offering free admission — now receive nearly 1.5 billion visits annually. The country has also developed 65 national archaeological site parks and more than 200 themed cultural relic tourism routes, linking urban and rural areas through shared historical and cultural resources.

China has expanded its international cooperation on cultural heritage preservation. It has taken the lead in establishing the Alliance for Cultural Heritage in Asia — the continent’s first intergovernmental organization in the field — as well as the International Organization for Standardization’s technical committee on cultural heritage conservation.

From 2021 to 2025, Chinese specialists have carried out six conservation and restoration projects in four countries, while 49 joint archaeological programs involving 28 countries and regions were launched, contributing Chinese expertise to global heritage protection.

Efforts to recover lost cultural relics have also yielded results. Over the past five years, 35 batches totaling 537 cultural relics and artworks lost overseas have been brought back to China.

“We will continue to improve institutional arrangements and strengthen coordination among all parties to bring more lost cultural relics home,” said Xie from the NCHA.

Tribunal upholds CCP order in poultry cartel case, directs PPA to deposit fine within 15 days

0
ISLAMABAD, Dec 15 (APP):Deciding a long-outstanding cartel case involving the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA), the Competition Appellate Tribunal (CAT) has upheld the order of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) and disposed of the appeal filed by the association.
The tribunal, however, reduced the penalty from Rs. 50 million to Rs. 25 million, citing a judgment of the Supreme Court in a similar case, and directed the PPA to deposit the amount within 15 days of receipt of the order, said a release issued here on Monday.
In 2010, the Competition Commission of Pakistan fined the Pakistan Poultry Association and its members Rs. 50 million for forming a cartel and illegally colluding on poultry product prices, in violation of Section 4 of the Competition Act. The action triggered prolonged legal proceedings over cartelization in the poultry sector.
During the hearing, counsel for the appellant told the tribunal that the association had no objection to the appeal being decided in line with the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in a similar case, in which the apex court had taken a lenient view and reduced the penalty.
Relying on the same reasoning, and with the consent of the appellant, the Appellate Tribunal reduced the total penalty to Rs. 25 million. The tribunal held that the facts of the present appeal were largely similar. It disposed of the case without examining the merits afresh.

NCCIA nabs eight in Islamabad financial fraud case

0
ISLAMABAD, Dec 15 (APP):The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Islamabad has arrested an eight-member organised gang involved in large-scale financial fraud during a raid conducted in the Khanna Pul area of the federal capital.
An official told APP on Monday that the accused used to pose as relatives or close friends living abroad—particularly in the United Kingdom—and deceived citizens by fabricating medical emergency scenarios to extract large sums of money.
During the investigation, NCCIA uncovered that one complainant was defrauded of Rs1.5 million through fake identities, with the amount transferred into the bank account of the prime suspect. Documentary and digital evidence confirming the financial transactions was recovered during the probe.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Muhammad Salman, Mohsin Jameel, Nazakat Ali, Mehtab Ali, Muhammad Shah Nawaz, Nasir Ali, Abid Hussain and Fahad Jabbar. A case has been registered under FIR No. 335/25 and Inquiry No. 2512/25, with charges framed under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 and the Pakistan Penal Code.
Officials said the operation was carried out on December 12, 2025, when an NCCIA Islamabad team conducted a targeted raid in the Khanna Pul area. The operation was led by Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Shehroz Riaz, with team members Babar Ali, Fahad Altaf, Waseem Shehzad and Kausar Niazi taking part in the action.
NCCIA authorities stated that further investigation is underway to trace additional facilitators, recover defrauded amounts and identify other potential victims of the gang. They urged citizens to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious calls, messages or online transactions to the relevant authorities for timely action.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on cybercrime and protecting citizens from digital fraud across the country.
