UN Chief slams deadly attack on Jewish holiday celebration in Sydney

0

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 15 (APP): United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the “heinous deadly attack” on Sunday against Jewish families gathered in Sydney, Australia, to celebrate Hanukkah, a religious festival of lights.

In a social media post, the UN chief said he was “horrified” by the incident.

“My heart is with the Jewish community worldwide on this first day of Hannukah, a festival celebrating the miracle of peace and light vanquishing darkness,”Guterres wrote.

At least 15 people were killed when two gunmen opened fire on the Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney, which authorities have called a terrorist attack.

Two of the victims were police officers, according to media reports. One of the gunmen was killed and the other was taken into custody.

The Secretary-General expressed solidarity with the people and Government of Australia, and with the Jewish community in the country and worldwide, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said in a statement issued Sunday evening.

He “unequivocally condemns antisemitism in all its forms and reiterates that attacks on religious communities and peaceful celebrations strike at the core values of tolerance, coexistence and human dignity,” it said.

The Secretary-General was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, where he addressed the opening of the 11th World Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC).

The Alliance was established 20 years ago to promote respect and understanding between cultures and religions.

In a post on social media, UNAOC High Representative Miguel A´ngel Moratinos said he was “appalled” at the attack and added his voice to the condemnation.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” he said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, the American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee (APPAC), a prominent Pakistani political group, also condemned the terrorist attack.

“Such acts of hatred and intimidation are morally reprehensible and absolutely unacceptable, regardless of geography or political context,” AAPAC said in a statement.

“Violence against civilians—especially those targeted for their faith—has no justification and must be confronted with zero tolerance.

“We call for swift accountability, justice, and the strongest possible response against those responsible. Silence or hesitation in the face of antisemitism and religious hatred only emboldens extremism,” APPAC added.

Benazir Nashonuma Programme to distribute 3.7m nutritional packs to combat stunting

0

ISLAMABAD, Dec 15 (APP): The Benazir Nashonuma Programme is set to distribute more than 3.7 million specialised nutritious food (SNF) packs in 2025 as part of Pakistan’s efforts to curb stunting and malnutrition among pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and young children.
Launched in 2020 and expanded nationwide in 2023, the programme has emerged as a key intervention targeting nutrition deficits during the critical first 1,000 days of life.
According to a document available with Wealth Pakistan, the planned distribution aims to strengthen maternal and child nutrition outcomes, particularly among low-income households facing limited access to healthy diets.
Currently operating through 540 facilitation centres across 157 districts, the programme provides nutrient-dense food supplements to an estimated 3.7 million women and children nationwide.
Under the initiative, enrolled mothers receive 75 grams of SNF per day, while children are provided with 50 grams daily. The supplements are fortified with essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids required for healthy maternal and child development.
In addition to nutritional support, the programme offers conditional cash transfers to enrolled beneficiaries. Women who comply with prescribed health services and return at least 90 percent of empty SNF sachets are eligible to receive Rs 4,000 per quarter for a girl child and Rs 3,500 for a boy child, easing household financial constraints linked to nutrition and healthcare.
Implemented under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), the Nashonuma initiative seeks to address Pakistan’s high stunting rates. The document highlights that more than two-thirds of households in the country are unable to afford a nutritious diet, underscoring the programme’s role in delivering both food assistance and income support to the most vulnerable families.
The programme is also scheduled to introduce targeted nutritional adjustments by the fourth quarter of 2025. Women identified as overweight or obese under body mass index criteria will receive multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) in place of standard SNF, reflecting a more tailored approach to maternal nutrition.
The initiative forms part of Pakistan’s broader response to widespread malnutrition, driven largely by the high cost of healthy and diverse diets. With household food expenditure covering only around 60 percent of the cost of a nutritious diet, the programme remains a critical support mechanism for vulnerable populations.

Pakistan shifts focus from aid to trade and investment for sustainable growth: Finance Minister

0

ISLAMABAD, Dec 15 (APP): Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb has said that Pakistan is no longer seeking aid-based support and is firmly transitioning towards trade- and investment-led engagement to ensure long-term economic sustainability and mutually beneficial partnerships, particularly with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

In an interview with CNN Business Arabia, the Finance Minister underscored that this strategic shift, clearly articulated by the Prime Minister, reflects Pakistan’s renewed economic confidence and reform momentum.

The Finance Minister highlighted that over the past 18 months, Pakistan has remained on a comprehensive macroeconomic stabilization program, which has delivered tangible and measurable results. Inflation, which had peaked at an unprecedented 38 percent, has now declined to single-digit levels.

On the fiscal front, Pakistan has achieved primary surpluses, while the current account deficit remains well within targeted limits. He further noted that the exchange rate has stabilized and foreign exchange reserves have improved to approximately 2.5 months of import cover, reflecting strengthening external buffers.

Senator Aurangzeb pointed to two major external validations of Pakistan’s improving economic outlook. Firstly, all three international credit rating agencies have aligned their assessments this year by upgrading Pakistan’s ratings and outlook.

Secondly, Pakistan has successfully completed the second review under the IMF Extended Fund Facility, with the IMF Executive Board granting its approval earlier this week. These developments, he said, demonstrate growing international confidence in Pakistan’s economic management and reform trajectory.

The Minister emphasized that macroeconomic stabilization has been achieved through a coordinated approach combining disciplined monetary and fiscal policies with an ambitious structural reform agenda. Reforms are being implemented across key areas including taxation, energy, state-owned enterprises, public financial management, and privatization, aimed at consolidating stability and laying the foundation for sustainable growth.

On taxation, Senator Aurangzeb noted significant progress in improving Pakistan’s tax-to-GDP ratio, which stood at 8.8 percent at the start of the reform program. During the last fiscal year, it increased to 10.3 percent, with a clear path towards 11 percent.

He explained that the government’s objective is to reach a level of tax collection that ensures fiscal sustainability over the medium to long term. This is being pursued through widening the tax base by bringing previously undertaxed but economically significant sectors such as real estate, agriculture, and wholesale and retail trade into the formal net, alongside deepening compliance by reducing leakages through production monitoring systems and AI-enabled technologies. Simultaneously, the tax administration is being transformed through reforms in people, processes, and technology.

In the energy sector, the Finance Minister highlighted efforts to improve governance in distribution companies, involve private sector expertise, advance privatization, and reduce circular debt, which has long constrained the power sector. He stressed that rationalizing the tariff regime is essential to making energy more competitive for industry, thereby enabling industrial revival and economic growth.

Senator Aurangzeb acknowledged the longstanding support of GCC countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, noting their critical role in supporting Pakistan through financing, funding, and cooperation at international financial institutions such as the IMF.

He said this relationship is now evolving towards a new phase centered on trade expansion and investment flows. Remittances continue to play a vital role in supporting the current account, with inflows reaching approximately USD 38 billion last year and projected to rise to USD 41-42 billion this year, over half of which originate from GCC countries.

Looking ahead, the Finance Minister stated that Pakistan is actively engaging with GCC partners to attract investment in priority sectors including energy, oil and gas, minerals and mining, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.

He also expressed optimism regarding progress on a Free Trade Agreement with the GCC, noting that discussions are at an advanced stage.

Reiterating the government’s strategic direction, Senator Aurangzeb said that Pakistan’s future lies in fostering trade and investment partnerships rather than reliance on aid. He emphasized that foreign direct investment into productive sectors will support higher GDP growth, generate employment opportunities, and deliver shared economic benefits for Pakistan and its partners. He concluded by stressing that the government is fully mobilized to translate this vision into reality.

China dominates first-ever nature index ranking in applied sciences, contributing over half of global output

0

BEIJING, Dec 15 (APP): Chinese research institutions stormed the inaugural Nature Index ranking in applied sciences, securing not just the top ten but every single position within the top thirty, demonstrating complete dominance.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), by far China’s largest research organization, led the ranking, with Zhejiang University securing the second spot. The first non-Chinese institution to appear was the National University of Singapore, which placed 31st, CEN reported.

In the first Nature Index in applied sciences, researchers based in China contributed to a commanding 56% of the total output, achieving a Share of 22,261. The United States was a distant second with a Share of 4,099, which equates to just 10% of the year’s total. Germany, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Japan, and India follow in that order. This means that China’s applied sciences output alone surpasses the combined total of the six countries ranked from second to seventh.

The ranking is based on research articles published last year in 25 applied-sciences journals and conferences that, in a survey, were named by almost 4,200 researchers as venues where they would want to publish their “most significant” work. Its analysis uses “Share”, a fractional count reflecting institutional contribution to publications, as the primary metric, with time-series data adjusted to 2024 levels.

King Abdulaziz Falconry Festival to kick off in Riyadh on Dec. 25

0
RIYADH, Dec 15 (APP):The prestigious King Abdulaziz Falconry Festival, hosted by the Saudi Falcons Club, will kick off on December 25 at the club’s headquarters in Malham, north of Riyadh.
Falconry has long been rooted in the Saudi consciousness, reflecting an enduring bond between humans and nature built on patience, discipline and respect. The King Abdulaziz Falconry Festival in Saudi Arabia is one of those experiences, not simply observed, but fully lived, according to a statement.
What distinguishes the festival is its approach to tradition as something alive, capable of growth and renewal. The falcons are showcased as part of a wider narrative about identity, belonging to the land and understanding the natural environment.
A notable feature over the years has been the strong presence of young participants, a sign of increasing awareness that heritage survives only when it becomes part of daily life. Here, children learn responsibility, discover the value of commitment and develop a deeper relationship with nature.
At its heart, the King Abdulaziz Falconry Festival presents a different image of Saudi Arabia, one that avoids grand declarations and instead lets the experience speak for itself. It reflects a nation confident in its history and in its ability to share it with the world without exaggeration or artifice.
The festival offers a moment to reflect on identity and on how culture can connect past and future. In the falcon’s flight calm, powerful and balanced, a simple yet profound truth emerges: some values do not need reinvention, only thoughtful presentation.
