Pilgrims stone the devil as Hajj nears culmination

Pilgrims stone the devil as Hajj nears culmination

MINA, Jun 29 (APP): The Hajj pilgrims performed the stoning ritual on Thursday, the first day of Ayam-e-Tashreeq, at the giant pillars symbolizing Shaitan in Jamarat, Mina, as part of the frequently repeated rituals of Hajj, and the pilgrimage is now nearing its conclusion.

Wearing normal dress after exiting from the ihram the previous day, Hajj pilgrims began the act of stoning the devil on Wednesday, targeting Jamarat Al-Aqba in Mina.

Stoning at Jamarat is a pivotal and frequently repeated ritual of the Hajj pilgrimage, symbolizing its culmination.
Pilgrims perform the ritual at Jamarat Al-Aqba (largest pillar) on the first day of stoning, known as the Day of Sacrifice.

During Ayam-e-Tashreeq, which are the three days following Eid Al Adha, pilgrims continue their ritual by engaging in the stoning ceremony. This ceremony involves throwing seven stones at three pillars: the small pillar (Jamarat Al-Sugra), the medium pillar (Jamarat Al-Wusta), and the largest pillar (Jamarat Al-Aqba). The pilgrims repeat this act seven times at each pillar, symbolizing their strong rejection of the devil and their unwavering resolve to resist temptation.

This significant ritual, marking the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage, takes place just outside Makkah.
Multiple paths were allocated on all the levels of the Jamarat Bridge Complex to ensure the smooth flow of pilgrims’ movement.

The stoning ritual during Hajj is the riskiest episode, as tens of thousands of pilgrims gather in an enclosed space, causing congestion and jostling. The pillars, representing the location where the devil tempted Hazrat Abraham (AS) against sacrificing his son Hazrat Ismael, (AS), serve as the focal point. Each stone thrown symbolizes a rebuke to the devil and reflects the pilgrims’ determination to resist temptation.

A significant number of Saudi security personnel, healthcare professionals, and volunteers are being mobilized in and around the Jamarat Complex with the purpose of safeguarding the well-being and safety of the pilgrims. Their presence aims to facilitate the smooth progress of the pilgrims and ensure the proper execution of the stoning ritual while prioritizing their health and safety.

Saudi authorities carefully monitored the crowds to ensure a hajj without any incidents. “The entire process, from crowd management and the stoning ritual in Jamarat to the Tawaf (circumambulation) around Makkah’s Grand Mosque, was smooth and effortless,” expressed Sadiq Khan, a pilgrim.

Meanwhile, the pilgrims will continue to reside in Mina, a tent city, during the 11th, and 12th of Dhu al-Hijja, as part of their Hajj pilgrimage.

After performing Rami, the pilgrims will leave Mina and proceed to Makkah on the evening of the 12th or 13th of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijja. Before returning home, the pilgrims will perform Tawaf, a ritual of circumambulating the Kaaba.

Attacks on schools, hospitals jump over 112% – UN official for children

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 29 (APP):International law violations involving children and armed conflict continue to have a “devastating impact,” the United Nations’ top official on the issue has said, as attacks on schools and hospitals have risen by more than 112 per cent.

Virginia Gamba, UN special representative for children and armed conflict, who unveiled the UN Secretary-General’s annual report, showed that 27,180 such violations were recorded in 2022.

The recorded violations only refer to verified information, with the likely toll much higher, and cover four categories: recruitment and use of children into armed groups or forces, killing and maiming, rape and sexual violence, and abduction, it was pointed out.

In the report, the UN chief did not put Israel on the blacklist for grave violations against 1,139 Palestinian children, including 54 killings last year — as supporters had hoped.

Instead, he welcomed Israel’s engagement with Ms. Gamba and its “identification of practical measures including those proposed by the U.N.” to protect children.

Riyad Mansour, Palestine’s U.N. ambassador, told reporters that Guterres “made a big mistake” in not listing the most extreme government in Israel’s history.

“It is very disappointing to the Palestinian people and to the Palestinian children,” he said.

Two-thirds of violations involved boys, spanning 24 different conflict situations, according to the report. A total of 8,831 children were killed or maimed, and another 7,622 were recruited by armed groups or forces.

Ms. Gamba told a press conference on Tuesday in New York that the countries recording the highest number of violations were the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Israel, the State of Palestine, Somalia, Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Yemen.

“The monitoring and verification of grave violations remained extremely challenging, including owing to access constraints leading to the underreporting of such violations and an increase in violations verified in 2022,” according to the report.

The countries where “the worst deterioration” occurred were Myanmar, South Sudan, and Burkina Faso.

There were 1,163 attacks on schools recorded, and 647 attacks on hospitals – a 112 per cent increase, the report said.

The widespread military use of schools both by armed forces and armed groups, is a “very worrisome trend”, said Ms. Gamba, calling for them to remain “zones of peace”.

Nearly 2,500 children were detained, a practice that “should only be used as a last resort and for the shortest period”, she added.

Ms. Gamba said that Russian forces and affiliated armed groups in Ukraine were being added to the annexe of the report as a notable offender, for the number of attacks on hospitals and schools carried out during the invasion and the killing of children during military operations.

Russia’s use of rocket systems, airstrikes, and shelling of populated areas had resulted in “very high casualties”, she said, adding that her engagement with Moscow to introduce measures to decrease attacks would continue.

She said that the Ukrainian armed forces had also received a warning from the UN Secretary-General through the report owing to attacks carried out on schools and hospitals during the war.

Stressing that even defensive responses needed to accord with international humanitarian law, she commended the progress made by the Ukrainian Government to make improvements.

The Special Representative said Israel and the State of Palestine would not be added to the global list of offenders, emphasizing that a warning not to repeat the urban assault on Gaza in May 2021 and retaliatory missile launches had been heeded sufficiently.

She said there had been an “important decrease” in Israeli airstrikes during 2022, noting that the whole purpose of publishing the report and highlighting violence was to change behaviour and strengthen protection.

However, she raised concerns over the continuing high level of violence in the West Bank and other occupied territories so far this year.

Among those added to the offenders’ list are armed groups in the DRC including M23, Mai-Mai Zaire, and CODECO. Two non-State actors in Burkina Faso were also added.

Ms. Gamba also highlighted the addition of Myanmar’s military rulers, listed for attacks on schools and hospitals, saying “they sit with five violations”.

In addition, she said two situations – in Haiti and Niger – are of growing concern to her office.
