ISLAMABAD, Jul 17 (APP): In response to the growing need for improved security measures, the security division of Islamabad police has been revamped along with the setting up of the first Judicial Protection Unit to enhance judges’ security.

Spearheaded by the Islamabad Capital City Police Officer (ICCPO) Dr Akbar Nasir Khan, the Security Division underwent a comprehensive reorganization to fortify the security of judges’ offices, court premises, and residences.

This development comes as a result of special directives from Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, and the dedicated efforts of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, reflecting the government’s commitment to safeguarding judicial authorities.

The newly formed Judicial Protection Unit will be placed under the vigilant supervision of the SSP Security Division, a police spokesman said. To ensure enhanced surveillance, a standard operating procedure (SOP) has been issued, along with the installation of over 500 high-tech security cameras within court premises.
These cameras are integrated with the advanced surveillance system of the Safe City Islamabad project, allowing for real-time monitoring of court premises.

Recognizing the importance of adequate personnel, the Ministry of Interior has received a request for the recruitment of 550 individuals to further bolster the security of residences and courts. Once the necessary financial resources are allocated, the performance of this unit is expected to improve significantly.

Previously, the Islamabad Capital Police established various units to address specific security concerns in the federal capital. Among them are the Diplomatic Protection Unit (DPU), tasked with safeguarding foreign diplomats and delegations in Islamabad, and the Special Protection Unit (SPU), responsible for ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals and other foreigners residing and working in the city.

Furthermore, the VVIP Protection Unit focuses on providing comprehensive security measures for the President and Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Lastly, the High-Security Zone Protection Unit (HSZPU) is entrusted with protecting members of the National Assembly, federal ministers, high-ranking officials, ministries, and civil offices.

ICCPO Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan emphasized that the restructuring of the Security Division is motivated by the objective of ensuring the safety of foreign embassies and diplomats in the federal capital, along with safeguarding national dignitaries and important offices. This significant step marks a critical milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to enhance security and uphold the rule of law.

France announces support to Afghan refugees in Iran, Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Jul 17 (APP):The government of France has announced a financial aid worth EUR 3 million to support UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency for its critical programmes for Afghans in the Islamic Republics of Iran and Pakistan.

The funding will enable the agency to intensify the provision of lifesaving assistance and protection for some of the most vulnerable refugees and their local host communities, said a press release issued here on Monday.

In Pakistan, EUR 2 million will enable UNHCR to boost primary and secondary level education, strengthen skills and vocational training, and reinforce access to public health care in host communities in 2023.

A particular focus of the Government of France’s support will be on supporting women and girls. This funding comes in addition to another contribution of EUR 2 million for 2022 activities, which has already delivered results in the area of increasing girls’ access to education and expanding skills training for women.

In Iran, France has allocated EUR 1 million to support UNHCR’s programmes in 2023. This contribution will help strengthen ongoing efforts to provide lifesaving assistance to Afghans and host communities, including access to essential healthcare, education, and protection services. This new funding is in addition to a similar contribution of EUR 1 million for UNHCR Iran in 2022.

UNHCR deeply appreciated France for their unwavering support in addressing one of the world’s most enduring refugee crises.

This funding represents France’s recognition of the urgent need to alleviate the suffering of millions of Afghans affected by displacement while emphasizing the importance of international solidarity and responsibility–sharing in finding solutions to their plight.

French Ambassador to Iran, Nicolas Roche, noted that, “by contributing to UNHCR’s work in Iran for the second year in a row, we are committed to supporting the Afghan people driven out of their country following the 2021 developments in Afghanistan. It is also essential for us to support the resilience of the local Iranian population through this assistance.”

One of UNHCR’s top 10 donors, France is a committed partner providing predictable and flexible contributions. In 2022, some 20 per cent of the annual contribution from France was earmarked, giving UNHCR critical flexibility to address emerging crises or underfunded situations.

Iran and Pakistan host over 9.2 million Afghans of varying statuses, including 2.3 million registered refugees. Many of them have left their country, propelled by insecurity, instability and grinding poverty.

Despite limited resources and strained economies, both Iran and Pakistan, through their refugee inclusive policies, have demonstrated a commitment to upholding the principles of hospitality and protection. The international community must rally behind and support Afghanistan’s neighboring countries, enabling them to maintain and further expand their progressive policies.

“Our support is a gesture of solidarity and gratitude for the four decades of hospitality extended by the governments and people of Pakistan for Afghan refugees,” noted Nicolas Galey, Ambassador of France to Pakistan. A co-convener at December’s Global Refugee Forum, the funding also reflects France’s commitment to increasing cooperation and solidarity with refugees and affected host countries.

“It’s important that communities hosting Afghan refugees are not forgotten and continue to see the international contribution towards local essential services,” he added.

UNHCR is committed to supporting Afghanistan’s neighboring countries and providing protection to millions of Afghan women, men, and children, and with the support of the government of France, the funding will help ensure that this work can not only continue but expand in the coming years.

At UN, Pakistan urges unified action to assist Asian-Pacific nations deal with climate-induced disasters

0

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 16 (APP): Pakistan has called for a coordinated effort to help the vulnerable nations of the Asia-Pacific region confront many climate change-related challenges like floods, heat waves, water shortages and melting glaciers.

“Together, we can build a world where climate action and sustainable development go hand in hand, leaving no one behind,” Romina Khurshid Alam, Special Assistant to the prime minister, told a U.N. conference on Sunday.

Speaking at the 4th Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies Between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, she underscored the need for knowledge sharing and utilization of collective experiences and expertise to chart a path toward a consortium that focuses on disaster risk reduction strategies for the Asia-Pacific region.

Ms. Alam, who is convener of the National Parliamentary Taskforce on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), introduced herself as “representing the Parliament of Pakistan” at the conference which is a part of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)’s High-Level Political Forum.

“I bring your attention to the Resolution I recently presented in the National Assembly to appreciate the contributions of the UN and its agencies that use their expertise and resources to help Pakistan in its fight against climate change. The Resolution was passed unanimously by the members of the August Forum on 23rd June 2023,” the Pakistani delegate told the conference.

Pakistan, she said, recognizes the critical importance of aligning its efforts with the Paris Agreement to the temperatures limited to 1.5 degrees and the 2030 UN Development Agenda. The country, she said, faces many challenges as 1/3rd of its land found itself underwater as a result of the floods of 2022 which were a wake-up call to the world on the threats of climate change.

The floods affected 33 million people, while more than 1,700 lives were lost, Ms. Alam said adding that damages and losses have been calculated at more than Rs. 6.4 trillion. Pakistan, she pointed out, contributes less than 1% of the global greenhouse gases,

“Even though these challenges threaten the economic prosperity of our country, the well-being of our people, and the security of our future generations, Pakistan is committed to the SDGs,” the Pakistan delegate said.

“Our government has implemented policies and strategies, focusing on renewable energy. We have also placed great emphasis on reducing poverty, promoting quality education, gender equality, and inclusive economic growth.”

Pakistan, she said, firmly believes that empowering local governments, engaging civil society, and mobilizing private sector partnerships are essential in driving transformative change.

“Our task force has been working tirelessly to improve legislation and enhance accountability. We are committed to ensuring that Pakistan plays an active role in the global discourse on climate change and sustainable development.”

In conclusion, Ms. Alam said, “let us leave here with a renewed determination to strengthen the synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda, knowing that our actions today will shape the future we leave for generations to come.”
