BEIJING, July 22 (APP): A Fuxing bullet train specially designed for the Hangzhou Asian Games rolled off the production line in Changchun, northeast China’s Jilin Province.

It will run between Hangzhou, the host city of the 19th Asian Games, and the five co-host cities of Ningbo, Wenzhou, Jinhua, Shaoxing, and Huzhou in east China’s Zhejiang Province during the event, CGTN reported on Saturday.

The Asian Games-themed Fuxing intelligent electric multiple unit (EMU) consists of eight cars with a capacity of 578 passengers and can reach a speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

It is coated in Rainbow Purple, a dominant color for the event, and decorated with patterns of the emblem, slogan, and sports pictograms.

Full 5G+Wi-Fi network coverage is offered on the EMU and intelligent interactive terminals are available in some carriages, which provide high-speed rail recreation, wireless screen projection, operation information, and other services for passengers during the journey.

To facilitate the travel of passengers with special needs, the train also has barrier-free carriages, which have been equipped with 90-centimeter-wide passage doors, barrier-free toilets and wheelchair storage areas.

Braille signs have been installed at multiple service points, such as seats, wheelchair storage areas and toilets, making it easy for visually impaired passengers to use.

The EMU has been optimized for an overall improved passenger experience.
Dozens of test runs have been conducted to improve its smooth operation, and the seats have been adjusted based on ergonomics.

An automatic air pressure and temperature adjustment system has been installed, which can effectively relieve the discomfort of tinnitus caused by changes in air pressure when passing through a tunnel.

The EMU’s locomotive has a bionic design, which will greatly reduce aerodynamic resistance and cut energy consumption by about 10 percent.

With lightweight vehicle body design and overall energy-saving technology, it can save about 1.8 million kWh of electricity annually, and the application of Ethernet technology will increase the data transmission speed in the train by more than 60 times.

A big data analysis platform will help operators monitor its performance and predict malfunctions.

Country’s economy needs political stability: Senator Siddiqui

0

ISLAMABAD, July 22 (APP): Senator Irfan-Ul-Haque Siddique has said that economic stability was among the challenges faced by Pakistan which required political steadiness and continuation of economic policies.

During a discussion with leaders of Pakistani community at Pakistan Embassy, Washington DC, the PML-N stalwart and senator maintained that unreliability and disruption in the policies could prove fatal for the economy.

Irfan Siddique said that it was a matter of satisfaction that the political leadership, institutions and other stakeholders of the country were very well cognizant that the past mistakes should not be repeated.

He opined that the PML-N leadership had put the country on the path of progress, the growth rate increased to over 6 percent and eliminated scourge of terrorism, but the incidents of 2017 had inflicted huge damage to that journey of progress and prosperity, a press release on Saturday said.

The senator further said that 9th May incidents had hurt the sentiments of every patriotic Pakistani, adding vandalism at installations of armed forces and disrespect to Shuhada of the country, who had sacrificed their lives for the motherland, were unacceptable to all Pakistanis.

He observed that throughout the civilized societies, the miscreants were being made to face the law of the land, but now attempts were being made by raising human rights issues and to create hurdles in the legal way of bringing these elements involved in the abhorrent 9th May incidents to accountability.

In this regard, different resources were being used abroad, he added.

The delegation included prominent business leaders and community leaders including Mussadiq Chughtai, Muhammad Khushegi, Senator Akbar Khawaja, Dr Javaid Manzoor and Kashmir leader and Advisor to President Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Zareef.

Senator Siddique further said that the history of the two major political parties of the country was full of strenuous efforts, ordeals and sacrifices, adding that leadership of these parties preferred to sacrifice their lives and accepted exiles but never had been a part of any conspiracy against the country and its institutions by brain washing the people to damage the national solidarity and prestige.

Lauding role of the overseas Pakistanis in the economic prosperity of their country, he said that they were well aware and wanted stability and economic uplift of Pakistan.

Any plot to create fissures among the overseas Pakistanis would not succeed, he added.

The senator further said that despite economic difficulties, the defence requirements of the country could not be neglected.

UN chief hails Mandela as ‘one of humanity’s greatest heroes’

UN chief Mandela

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 22 (APP): The United Nations on Saturday held its annual ceremony to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, the first black President of post-apartheid South Africa who died in 2013.

The commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day pays tribute to his fight for freedom and equality, both at home and around the world.

Mandela, who was affectionately known by his Xhosa clan name, Madiba, spent nearly three decades in jail for standing up to human rights abuses and severe injustices against black South Africans.

He was released from prison in 1990 and elected President four years later in the country’s first-ever multiracial elections.

Csaba Korosi, President of the UN General Assembly, said Mandela’s remarkable journey serves as an example of transformation through forgiveness as he bequeathed a multiracial, democratic South Africa vastly different from the racist state into which he was born.

“Madiba’s lifelong commitment to human rights embodies a founding principle of this organisation: We cannot leave anyone behind,” he added.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called Mandela one of humanity’s greatest heroes.

“Nelson Mandela was a colossus of courage and conviction,” he said. “How do we pay tribute to such a giant? Through words of respect, certainly. But we best honour Madiba through action.”

Guterres called for action against racism, discrimination, hate, and to “extinguish the legacies of colonialism.” He also appealed for promoting equality, human rights “and above all, justice.”

The UN chief said the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed global inequalities and “three years on, the need to bridge the global justice gap is more urgent than ever.”

He pointed to injustice at the heart of the international financial system that is rooted in colonialism. To this day, Africa is underrepresented in the global financial architecture and the continent lacks a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, he said.

He recalled that Mandela addressed these issues in a speech to the UN nearly 30 years ago, arguing against the uneven distribution of resources and decision-making power.

“The world is still waiting for change,” said Guterres. “Ultimately, we need fundamental reform of the international financial system. But we must also support developing economies with concrete steps we can take today.”

He called for urgently overhauling the business models of multilateral development banks, providing a sustainable development stimulus plan, and establishing debt relief that supports payment suspensions, among other measures.

The American politician and activist Andrew Young, a former US Ambassador to the UN, shared memories of Mandela who was both a friend and brother.

“We hear things that seem impossible to us: that he invited his jailor to sit with his family at his inauguration and that he constantly made an effort to unite South Africa in spite of all of its divisions,” he said.

Young, who is now 91, stated that his own country is today struggling with some of the same dynamics that plagued apartheid-era South Africa.

“We’re grateful for the example that was set by President Madiba,” he said. “And we’re grateful for this institution for following in that tradition and keeping alive the hope of liberty and dignity, and a realization that we can be free in spite of the cultural chains that bind us.”
