Persons now harping on freedom of expression, did strangulate media while in power: Marriyum

0

ISLAMABAD, Aug 04 (APP): Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb stated on Friday that some persons were now delivering speeches on freedom of expression though they themselves had kept the ‘media corner’ in the Parliament House closed, banned programmes by journalists, and strangulated freedom of media during their four-year stint in power.

Talking to the media outside the Parliament House, on a question about the economic crisis, inflation and violation of the IMF agreement, she said the PTI chief just manoeuvred to shift the blame from his economic team and his cabinet for the theft of 190 million pounds.

Castigating the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman, she said the person arrived in courts covering his face with a bucket, box or canister as he could not face the masses and had no answer for theft allegations.

“We suffered censorship for four years but we did not put buckets, boxes or canisters on our faces and faced the odds bravely with our heads high,” she added.

The minister said the PEMRA (Amendment) Bill 2023 was a serious piece of legislation and on her request, the bill was referred to the Senate’s Standing Committee, which should give a constructive opinion about it. The bill had already been passed by the National Assembly

He said “an incompetent, inefficient, corrupt and fascist group” remained in control of the legislature and the government for four years, which kept the media corner closed in the Parliament and today they were talking about freedom of press and freedom of expression.

She said 12-month long consultation was held on the PEMRA bill. All the representative organizations of the media, including the Parliamentary Reporters Association, provided their professional input and guidance for which she was grateful to them. The bill would further strengthen the freedom of expression in the country, she added.

Marriyum said while tabling the bill in the Senate today, she briefed the House about the amendments being made in it.
In the amended bill, the difference between misinformation and disinformation had been defined, besides providing the margin of error.

As per the bill, powers, after taking back from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) chairman, had now been given to the Council of Complaints which had representation of the media as well, she added.

The minister said the bill was drafted in consensus of all media organizations, and unanimously passed by the National Assembly after thorough discussion by its Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting . However, she wished that the senators should also have their opinion on the bill as it was a serious legislation.

“I do not want to make it controversial, so I requested the Senate chairman to send the bill to the Senate’s Standing Committee,” she added. There were enough members in the House to pass the bill, but the government wanted to complete the process and did not object to sending it to the committee, the minister said.

Taking a jibe on the PTI chief, she said today was not the era when the programmes hosted by journalists were banned. On the contrary, the prime minister got the title of a ‘media predator’ as journalists were kidnapped, arrested, beaten and imprisoned during his government, she added.

Marriyum said the bill had been sent to the standing committee as the opinion of all the senators was important. However, there should be constructive discussion in the committee so that the legislation could be improved but there should not be opposition for the sake of opposition, she added.

The minister said the world was moving towards “co-regulation” and “self-regulation”, and after assessing the laws and best practices of the world, the PEMRA law was being amended.

Answering a question, she said the chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Information was absconding. The Senate chairman had the power to appoint any member of the committee as its acting chairman for the important legislation.

To another question, she said the PRA guided her in the preparation of the bill for which she was thankful to it.
The Council of Complaints had been given powers to summon the person to whom the matter was related to.

To a query, the minister said the intention and purpose was clear and during the previous regime, the then opposition suffered the censorship but the present opposition did not face such situation.

She expressed the hope that the bill would also be approved by the Senate.

To a question, the minister said the former prime minister never took responsibility for any action, citing that he put the blame on his economic team for economic issues and the cabinet for the 90 million pounds plunder. Similarly, he diverted the issue of stolen watch from the Toshakhana to his military secretary, she added.

India cannot suppress legitimate struggle of Kashmiris: Kaira

0

ISLAMABAD, Aug 04 (APP): Advisor to the Prime Minister on Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan Qamar Zaman Kaira Friday said India cannot suppress the legitimate struggle of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Addressing a press conference, he said Pakistan will not allow India to succeed in its nefarious designs to turn the Muslim majority into the minority in the IIOJK.

Flanked by Kashmiri leaders, he said Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari presented the Kashmir cause in a befitting manner at all international forums even during his visit to India.

The Advisor to Prime Minister said the Kashmir dispute was not an issue between Hindus and Muslims, rather it was a just freedom cause of the people residing over there.

Kaira regretted that India is giving the impression that Kashmir is an issue between Hindus and Muslims through propaganda.

He said that in that regard, the resolution will be presented in the National Assembly session on Monday.

“We are proud of our friendship with China”, he said, adding that China has also expressed concerns over the Indian move of August 5.

Farooq Rahmani, leader Kashmir Council said that the Modi government was currently in trouble and feared that it may take steps beyond August 5 for winning the elections.

Rahmani said according to the United Nations Charter, Kashmir has a separate identity and India’s claims on Kashmir were false.

Pakistan’s sports goods industry benefiting from ties with China

0

BEIJING, Aug 4 (APP): Pakistan has an enduring practice of producing high-quality sports goods, including footballs, basketballs, volleyballs cricket equipment, and other sports accessories.

Experts believe that the country’s skilled artisans are renowned for their expertise in this field.

Despite its superb craftsmanship and a large pool of workers, the industry’s poor access to international markets has hampered its growth for a long time.

Ghulam Qadir, Commercial Counselor of the Pakistani Embassy in China, remarked that China provides Pakistan with an excellent opportunity to expand its influence and open up new markets.

As the world’s largest manufacturing country, China has advanced manufacturing technology, a huge economic volume and a complete trade network, all of which can help Pakistan’s sporting goods industry to undergo significant changes.

“Pakistan’s basketballs, footballs, and volleyballs (community code: 95066210) exported to China in the first six months of this year crossed $5.53 million, whereas in the same period last year, it was only $4.22 million. Similarly, equipment for sports outdoor games, swim/paddling pools (community code: 95069990) crossed $0.3 million, which is expected to improve this year”, he added.

The Commercial Counsellor further said that China’s advanced manufacturing technology has revolutionized Pakistan’s sports goods industry. Through collaboration, Pakistani manufacturers have gained access to state-of-the-art machinery, production techniques, and quality control processes, adding that this has not only enhanced the overall quality of the products but also increased production efficiency, allowing the industry to meet the growing demands of international markets.

Sony Iqbal, Chairman of the Small & Medium Enterprise (SMEs) Association in Pakistan told China Economic Net that one of the key advantages of partnering with China is the cost-effectiveness. By using Chinese methods including latest technology and efficient supply chain management, production costs for manufacturers could be significantly reduced.

“Importing Chinese technologies could help us to improve quality while reducing costs, making Pakistani sports goods more attractive in global markets. We should also participate in more exhibitions held in China, as a result, the industry can experience a surge in export orders, boosting its revenue and contributing to Pakistan’s economic growth”, Iqbal emphasized.

He further noted that China’s extensive trade networks and global reach have opened new doors for Pakistan’s sports goods industry. By collaborating with Chinese manufacturers and distributors, Pakistani companies have gained access to a wide range of international markets.

“We should promote our SMEs by participating in different exhibitions in China and this strategic alliance would enable Pakistani businessmen to expand their customer base and diversify their product offerings. The government of Pakistan should encourage SMEs by providing some subsidies that they could enhance their domestic and international business.”

Answering a question that how Pakistan can convert from traditional sports goods to innovative designs, he mentioned that Pakistan now caters to a broader audience, meeting the diverse demands of sports enthusiasts worldwide by breaking through the tradition and adopting more diverse designs to meet the needs of different countries and regions.

Pakistani sports experts and traders believe that Pakistan must focus on developing its latest domestic infrastructure, fostering innovation, and investing in research and development. This will enable the industry to stay ahead of the curve and maintain its competitive edge in the global market.

They also told CEN that China can continue supporting Pakistan’s sports goods industry by sharing technological advancements, providing training programs, and facilitating trade opportunities. By doing so, China can strengthen its ties with Pakistan’s sports industry and further establish itself as a key player in the global sports goods market.

Pakistan’s abiding commitment to Kashmir cause reaffirmed at ISSI Seminar

0

ISLAMABAD, Aug 4 (APP): Pakistan’s strong solidarity with the Kashmiri people and abiding commitment to the just cause of Kashmir was reaffirmed at a seminar organized by the India Study Center (ISC) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) here on Friday, in connection with Youm-e-Istehsal (5 August).

The speakers highlighted the historical, legal, human rights, and strategic aspects of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

The seminar, titled “August 5, 2019 – Assault on Kashmiri Rights and Identity Continues Unabated”, was attended by a large number of diplomats, academics, researchers, students, members of the civil society, and representatives of the media. The distinguished speakers included: Member, Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of the OIC, Ambassador Tasnim Aslam; former Minister for Social Welfare and Women Development, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Ms. Farzana Yaqoob; Executive Director, Research Society of International Law (RSIL), Jamal Aziz; Chairman, Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR), Altaf Hussain Wani; and Convener, Tehreek Hurriyet Jammu, and Kashmir, Ghulam Muhamad Safi, were the distinguished speakers of the occasion.

Advisor to the Prime Minister on Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan, Qamar Zaman Kaira, was the chief guest.

In his introductory remarks, Acting Director ISC Malik Qasim Mustafa, highlighted that since 1947, when India illegally occupied the State of Jammu and Kashmir, India’s atrocities and denial of justice to the Kashmiri people were continuing unabated. The 5th August 2019 assault by India on Kashmiri rights and identity and inhumane military siege and brutality of Indian security forces had further accentuated the sufferings of the Kashmiri people. Underscoring the importance of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, he stressed that the international community had a responsibility to facilitate peaceful solution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

In his remarks, DG ISSI Ambassador Sohail Mahmood stated that 5th August – another ‘Black Day’ in history – marked the completion of 4 years since India’s illegal and unilateral actions aimed at changing the internationally recognized “disputed” status of Jammu and Kashmir and altering the demographic structure of the occupied territory.

He noted that, in the run-up to India’s illegal actions of 5th August 2019, additional troops deployments were made by India in IIOJK, which was already the “most militarized zone” in the world.

Moreover, a round-the-clock curfew was clamped; total communication blockade was effected; and the entire area turned into an ‘open jail.’ The level of oppression was hugely upscaled by the Indian security forces – indiscriminately targeting Kashmiri men, women, and children. Arbitrary arrests, custodial torture, extra-judicial killings, and cordon-and-search operations followed.

With the advent of Covid-19 pandemic, Kashmiri were subjected to “double lock-down.” Meanwhile, India relentlessly pursued its sinister design of demographic change and turned the Kashmiri Muslim majority into a minority in its own land.

DG ISSI Sohail Mahmood also highlighted the crackdown against the media and human rights defenders; the complete impunity enjoyed by Indian security forces under draconian laws; India’s attempts to peddle a fiction of ‘calm’ and ‘normalcy’ in IIOJK; and New Delhi’s desperate efforts to elicit legitimacy for its illegal occupation through convening of some G20 meetings/events.

He added that what was happening in IIOJK was also part of the RSS-BJP ‘Hindutva’ project, which espoused the goals of ‘Hindu Rashtra’ and ‘Akhand Bharat’ and was thus fraught with grave implications for peace and security in South Asia. In this phase, with next Lok Sabha elections due in 2024, it was important for Pakistan to maintain enhanced vigilance as ‘false flag’ operations or another military misadventure by the BJP government could not be ruled out.

He concluded by stressing that the international community, including the UN Security Council, must shoulder their responsibility in facilitating a peaceful resolution, as justice for Kashmiris would mean sustainable peace for South Asia and its nearly 2 billion people.

In his address on the occasion, Chief Guest Qamar Zaman Kaira highlighted Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the Kashmir cause, as reflected in its stance that Kashmir is the ‘unfinished agenda of the partition.’

He added that all political parties in Pakistan had a similar position on the Kashmir dispute, as all were committed to its peaceful resolution through implementation of UN Security Council resolutions.

The Adviser added that Jammu and Kashmir dispute was the core issue between India and Pakistan and its just solution would strengthen regional peace and stability.

He also stressed the need for educating the younger generation on the history and legality of the Kashmir dispute so that they could, in their own turn, also fight this case with vigour and conviction. Lauding the ISSI’s initiative of holding the seminar, the Adviser stressed that the Kashmir cause had to be advanced also through thorough research work and intellectual endeavours. This was essential for preventing any distortions and dilution of positions. Underlining that a strong Pakistan would always be a strong advocate of Kashmir, the Adviser pledged that the government would continue to promote the cause through vigorous efforts and proactive diplomacy.

Of the other speakers, Ambassador Tasnim Aslam talked about the history of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and emphasized the need for implementation of the UNSC resolutions, calling for a fair and impartial plebiscite to enable the Kashmiris to determine their own future. She also analyzed the dynamics in the Security Council, the OIC’s steadfast support on Kashmir, and the impact of geo-strategic factors on issues such as Kashmir and Palestine. Ambassador Tasnim Aslam also highlighted the need for proactive use of social media platforms to raise global awareness about Kashmir and enable people across the world to force their governments to change their stance in favour of Kashmiris’ rights.

Ms. Farzana Yaqoob highlighted the trials and tribulations endured by the Kashmiris in their epic struggle and underlined that the Kashmir cause can never be compromised through Indian lures of investment and development. She appreciated Pakistan’s consistent support for the Kashmir cause and underscored the importance of all segments of society, and particularly the youth, playing their part in its further advancement. She particularly stressed the importance of highlighting India’s atrocities and ‘war crimes’ to the world community, while the Kashmiris pursued their struggle with patience, perseverance and equanimity.

Jamal Aziz stressed the need for a more proactive and robust strategy on Kashmir, based on International Law. He stated that India was fighting on a wrong footing and, through International Law, Pakistan – as an ardent advocate of the Kashmir cause – could press the case about illegality of India’s occupation and Indian actions of 5th August as the sovereign title of Kashmir had never transferred to India.

Altaf Hussian Wani, while presenting his perspective on the way forward, underlined the need to make Azad Kashmir the hub of knowledge and academic engagement regarding Kashmir, in the region and international arena as well. He called for having a ‘Charter of Kashmir’ adopted by all political parties and proposed that it should also be included in their respective manifestos.

Muhammad Ghulam Safi said that the brutalities that India was committing in Kashmir knew no bounds. Ban on religious activities, restrictions on all forms of speeches, gagging the public opinion and journalism, legalizing brutality by empowering law and order agencies through draconian laws, and making life hell in the ‘heaven on earth’ – Kashmir – were all illustrative of Indian oppression. He also highlighted the sacrifices rendered by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Ashraf Sehrai as well as a large number of Kashmiri leaders imprisoned in Tihar Jail including Yasin Malik. He concluded by stressing that, despite enormous odds and unabated Indian repression, Kashmiris will continue their struggle until they achieved their inalienable right to self-determination.

Chairman BoG ISSI, Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, in his concluding remarks, said that India’s illegal steps of 5th August had, on the one hand, caused a nose-dive in Pakistan-India relations and also impacted India-China relations. On the other hand, they had served to reinvigorate the Kashmiri struggle. He noted that there had been many positive developments as well including the 3 sessions on the subject in UNSC after 5th August 2019, the 2 Kashmir reports issued by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, affirmation of relevant Security Council resolutions by the UN Secretary General, and the steadfast support extended by OIC. He added that this Seminar had highlighted myriad dimensions of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and thus made a contribution to raising international awareness and better understanding.

Court seeks arguments from Imran Khan’s counsel regarding maintainability of criminal case

0

ISLAMABAD, Aug 04 (APP): A lower court on Friday summoned Chairman PTI Imran Khan along with his lawyers for arguments in a case pertaining the maintainability of the toshakhana case following the orders of Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Additional District and Session Judge Hamayun Dilawar heard the criminal case against former prime minister Imran Khan.
During the course of proceeding, counsel for ECP Amjad Pervaiz argued that all documents were filed by the accused himself after signing it, that’s why there was no question regarding its acceptance. The said that the gifts received from toshakhana and challan submitted to national assembly were the part of the record.
The lawyer said that the former prime minister and his wife had received a total of 58 gifts, adding that the value of 14 gifts was evaluated more than Rs30,000. As per the accused they had purchased four gifts against Rs21.6 million, he said, adding that cufflinks, watches, ring and iPhone were included in the gifts. He said that the gifts were received after payment of 20% price in 2018-19. It had been told that the gifts of jewelry were received by the wife of former prime minister, he said.
The lawyer said that the former prime minister had mentioned no any jewelry in form-B submitted to the ECP, adding that the accused had admitted the facts it in his statement under section-342. The former prime minister had received five gifts in 2020-21 including Rolex watch, cufflinks, ring, suit, necklace, bracelet and others, he said. The lawyer said that he couldn’t admit that the former prime minister was not owning any vehicle. What would happened if Imran Khan disclosed jewelry owned by him before public, he asked.
The lawyer said that the former prime minister had declared the value of his three house worth only five lac in last four years. The PTI chairman had stated that he was no owning any jewelry, he said and concluded his argument.
PTI’s lawyer Asim Baig appeared before the court and adopted the stance that the SC had declared that the trial court couldn’t issue final judgment until their appeal was pending in high court and prayed the court to adjourn the case till the decision of IHC. The judge asked the lawyer to present order if any regarding the stay into the proceeding. The court said that the attitude of the defence lawyers was unprofessional.
Later, the lawyer told the court that the high court had remanded back the case pertaining the admissibility of the criminal case and instructed it to re-hear it. However, the court had not issued any stay against the proceeding.
ECP’s counsel also told the judge that the petition pertaining transfer of the case had been rejected by the high court and FIA had been directed to probe into the fake social media posts associated with the name of judge.
The court said that the ECP’s lawyer had already given arguments regarding the maintainability of the case and asked Imran Khan’s counsel to give arguments tomorrow.
