ISLAMABAD, Aug 02 (APP): World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Pakistan, Dr Palitha Mahipala has said that the organization was striving to eliminate the hepatitis from Pakistan.

In a message, Dr Palitha said that Pakistan is facing a considerably high disease burden due to viral Hepatitis B & C.

He said that Pakistan has the highest prevalence of Hepatitis C (7%) globally and has the highest number of people suffering from HCV.

“Viral hepatitis affects 360 million people worldwide and claims 3,000 lives every day.” He said that in 2015, the World Health Assembly adopted a strategy to eliminate hepatitis by 2030 through prevention, testing and treatment.

Around 15 million people are estimated infected with Viral Hepatitis C in the country. Another 5 million are estimated infected with Viral Hepatitis B in the country, he added.

Dr Palitha said, “Unfortunately, our response to viral hepatitis has stagnated in recent years.” He added testing for viral hepatitis has not been scaled up as tests and treatment are considered expensive.

He said that the theme of world hepatitis day this year was ‘Hepatitis Medicines are Cheaper – Treat to Save Lives’ aims to raise awareness to scale treatment for people living with viral hepatitis.

He said that now the manufacturers have announced to lower the price of WHO prequalified hepatitis B and C drugs in low-and middle-income countries. This has been a concerted effort by partners to ensure affordability and accessibility to hepatitis treatment, he added.

He said that these new drug prices will significantly reduce the cost of treatment to low and middle-income countries, and scale up hepatitis programs to meet growing demand, all towards eliminating hepatitis.

He said that the WHO and all stakeholders will ensure the affordability and accessibility of medicines, testing and treatment to millions in low and middle-income countries. “This is indeed a major step towards the elimination of hepatitis by 2030,” he added.

SC rejects PTI chief’s request to stay Toshakhana trial

0

ISLAMABAD, Aug 02 (APP): The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday rejected the request of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s chairman to stay the Toshakhana case trial, observing that it could not interfere into the lower court’s proceedings.

Justice Yahya Afridi, while heading the three-member bench which heard the PTI chief’s petition, observed that the court had taken up the appeal and issued an order despite it had become ineffective. The case would remain pending with the bench, he said, adding the Islamabad High Court (IHC) should decide the case.

He said the apex court had instructed the high court to hear the all appeals together, which might grant the petitioner relief.

Justice Afridi also observed that the top court had granted the requested relief to the petitioner but it was strange that he again approached it.

The PTI chief’s lawyer Khawaja Haris said that his client’s case was fixed before the IHC for hearing on Thursday. The case was about the trial court’s jurisdiction.

They had approached the top court because the high court did not issue a stay order against the Toshakhana case trial, he added.

The court adjourned the further hearing of the case till Friday.

The Toshakhana criminal case trial has entered in the final stage in lower court as all the witnesses had been testified. The court has sought final arguments. The PTI chief has challenged various orders of the lower court before the IHC.

People stand by Nawaz Sharif due to his ideology: Marriyum

ISLAMABAD, Aug 02 (APP): Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Wednesday said the people, voters and legislators of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) firmly stood by its Qauid Muhammad Nawaz Sharif due to his ideology.

However, those who hatched conspiracies against the country could not face the people today, the minister said while addressing a news conference after his visit to the Shalimar Recording and Broadcasting Corporation.

She said the people fully knew that it was Nawaz Sharif who could steer the country out of the crises.

The three-time elected prime minister, she said, was removed in 2017 through a conspiracy which culminated into the “Project Imran” that was imposed on the nation in 2018 and the journey of development came to a grinding halt, the minister regretted.

She said many uplift projects started by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government were stopped, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was put on the back burner, achievements against terrorism went in vain and the masses faced the worst inflation during the four-year tenure of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regime.

In the last 15 months, she said, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif along with his allies brought the country out of crisis created during the four-year inefficient and incompetent rule of the PTI.

She remarked that the PTI chairman was “an enemy of the country”, who first signed an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on tough conditions, then violated and suspended it for petty political gains jeopardising the economy and prestige of the nation.

Marriyum said the PTI regime was bent upon auctioning the national institutions, however, it was the current government which had completely transformed them by initiating reform programmes.

The minister congratulated PML-N leaders Talal Chaudhry and Daniyal Aziz as their five-year disqualification period had come to an end.

The two leaders, she said, stood firm with Nawaz Sharif and the party in difficult and tough times.
“Talal Chaudhry and Daniyal Aziz fought against the odds and remained steadfast as political workers,” she added.

The minister said the National Assembly had approved the PEMRA Amendment bill today, expressing her gratitude for the media workers and stakeholders for supporting the bill.

After the passage of this bill, she added, minimum salary of media workers would now be as per the government’s guidelines, and the issue of delay in the payment of salaries would also be resolved.

The media, she said, through a self-regulatory move had joined hands with the government to make ‘misinformation and disinformation’ as part of the bill.

She said that the amendment was enacted to promote responsible journalism in the country. Now, they would have to fulfill their responsibilities on misinformation and disinformation, she maintained.

The scope of public service messaging had been widened in the amended PEMRA Bill, Marriyum Aurangzeb noted.

She congratulated the employees of Shalimar Recording and Broadcasting Corporation (SRBC) on the completion of 108-room building.

She said when the present government came to power, the building of SRBC was a ruin, and employees were on the streets as they were not paid salaries and pensions for many months.
Now, she added, that their salaries and pensions were being paid in time.

She said that state broadcasters like PTV, Radio Pakistan and SRBC were assets of the nation and their revival would boost the industry.

Marriyum said during the PTI era, the minister concerned used to talk about the auction of the buildings of PTV, Radio Pakistan and SRBC but the present regime in only 15 months had taken concrete steps for their transformation on modern lines so that they could stand on their own feet.

She said that the former prime minister was termed a “media predator” by an international organization, whereas during the past 15 months, Pakistan’s ranking in the freedom of expression index had improved by seven points.

She said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would formally launch the health card scheme for artists and journalists.

About Radio Pakistan, she said that the problem of salaries and pensions of its employees had been resolved.

The minister said that the government wanted to provide entertainment to people at affordable cost and for that purpose it had decided to build cinema houses in the premises of PTV, Radio Pakistan and SRBC.

She said that the aim was to revive the local film industry so that Pakistan’s national narrative could be promoted and projected through screen tourism.

The minister inaugurated the MCR and also broke ground of a cinema house in the SRBC building.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 02 (APP): Minister of Finance and Revenue Muhammad Ishaq Dar, on Wednesday, raised questions about the effective usage of Rs 500 billion allocated to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government over the past decade to combat terrorism.

During a Senate debate on the Bajaur suicide bombing, Dar revealed that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government received over Rs 500 billion, including Rs 71 billion during 2022-23, from the divisible pool since 2009 to combat terrorism in the province. He expressed his disappointment, stating that if they had spent the amount on budget support, it would be regrettable.

Minister for Finance and Revenue, Muhammad Ishaq Dar, brought attention to the special provision in the NFC Award, 2021, stating that the provinces unanimously decided to allocate 1 per cent of the Divisible Pool’s net proceeds to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as an acknowledgement of its front line role against terrorism. However, Dar expressed concern that the provincial government had not effectively utilized the allocated funds to build the intended counter-terrorism capacity.

Expressing condemnation for the gruesome incident in Bajaur, he expressed regret that terrorism has resurged, prompting the need for introspection into the reasons behind its resurgence in the country.

He called upon the House to organize a briefing from the Interior Ministry, urging them to share terror data from the last decade. He emphasized that a collective decision should be taken to determine the future course of action in combating the menace of terrorism.

He strongly criticized the PTI government for engaging in negotiations with terrorists, providing them sanctuary in the province, and demanded that those responsible should apologize to the people of the country.

Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani expressed condemnation of the Bajaur killings and called for an in-camera meeting of the National Security Committee to devise a joint strategy for combating terrorism.

Ms. Shazia Marri, Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Chairs the 60th BISP Board of Directors Meeting in Islamabad on August 02, 2023.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 02 (APP): In a significant development towards empowering women and enhancing social protection measures, the board of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), in its 60th meeting, approved a record Rs. 471 billion budget for FY 2023-24.
The board met under the chair of Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety (PA&SS) and Chairperson BISP, Shazia Marri.

In addition, six billion rupees have been earmarked for Benazir Scholarships for Undergraduates.
The board was further briefed that only 1.20% of the total budget is for employees including administrative expenses while the rest of the budget is programme based. Wrapping-up the 2022-23 revised estimates it was highlighted that 99.98% of the budget for the programme has been utilized.
The board was also apprised of the performance of last one year, whereby, the number of Benazir Kafaalat beneficiaries was increased from 7.6 to nine million along with increase in cash stipend from Rs. 7000 to Rs. 8750 per quarter per family.
The Board was briefed that the beneficiaries of Benazir Nashonuma Programme were increased from 0.2 to 0.77 million and beneficiaries of Taleemi Wazaif were increased from 2.6 to 7.52 million.
The board was further informed that two major steps have been approved. One of the major decisions taken was to expand the scope of the recently launched Benazir Social Protection Account.

The Hybrid Social Safety net Programme was referred to the Technical Design Committee.
