President stresses adopting preventive measures to avoid diseases

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday said adopting preventive measures could help people avoiding or minimizing intensity of diseases, and improving the overall health condition of the population of the country.

Health and education are the two basic sectors which needed to be put on top priority because nations always build on these two areas, he said while addressing the “Med-Health Expo 2023 and Summit” here.

The president said the people specially those with limited resources could easily avoid the chronic diseases such as breast cancer, hepatitis, and communicable diseases by adopting preventive measures.

With regard to deteriorating health sector in the country, the president highlighted that lack of decision-making, avoidance of merit and corruption in the past were the main reason behind limited health facilities in the country.

The health sector exhibition was organized by Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) aimed at information exchange, learning, and cooperation opportunities for health professionals.

The two-day event would showcase the latest research and developments in various medical fields through a series of sessions.

President Alvi stressed universities and academia to promote research in the health sector that would bring tremendous improvement in human health.

He urged the medical professionals to move along with the world that was doing advance research on human DNA to predict the disease in people.

He also called upon the industrialists to produce affordable medical devices to ensure access of people especially from all walks of society to the quality medical facilities.

President Alvi said the industrialists and the exporters should explore big potential markets such as Africa to increase their exports of pharmaceutical and surgical instruments.

He informed that some 9 million pregnancies occurred annually in the country out of which 50% were unwanted which could easily be avoided by providing contraceptive facilities to the people.

Similarly he said doctors and hospitals should also use the latest technology to provide online healthcare facilities to save resources of both patients and the hospitals. This would also help reaching out to the maximum number of people, he added.

The president also stressed the need to provide first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to common people from school levels to save lives of the people in emergencies.

President RCCI Saqib Rafiq said President Dr Arif Alvi and First Lady Samina Alvi played vital role in creating awareness about different diseases especially breast cancer in the country.

He said Pakistan’s health sector was facing challenges which needed to be addressed. He said due to lack of awareness and health facilities, 10% of total population was suffering from hepatitis and 34% from stress. Similarly, he said maternal mortality was very high in the country.

Chairman of the event Usman Shoukat called upon the government to focus on health sector and take special measures for uplift of the sector.

Group Leader RCCI Sohail Altaf maintained that the government should provide subsidized land and equipments to the private sector to ensure affordable healthcare facilities to the masses.

On the occasion, President Alvi also awarded shields to pharmaceutical companies, private hospitals, and medical laboratories for their services in health sector.

China-South Asia expo serves as bridge for uniting China-Pakistan: Ambassador Haque

BEIJING, Aug 16 (APP):: Pakistan Ambassador to China, Moin ul Haque said on Wednesday that China-South Asia Expo serves as a bridge for uniting China-Pakistan to enhance bilateral cooperation in various sectors.

Addressing the 4th Forum on China-South Asia Technology Transfer and Collaborative Innovation at Kunming Expo, he noted that Pakistan, recognizing the importance of science and technology, has embarked on the transformative journey of Digital Pakistan by harnessing our vibrant youth, constituting 60% of our populace, and tapping into their innovative prowess, China Economic Net (CEN) reported.

We aim to reshape our trajectory. The burgeoning number of Pakistani startups attracting international venture capital attests to our untapped potential.

Through the establishment of a Special Technological Zone Authority, we are nurturing an ecosystem of innovation, entrepreneurship, and research, he added.

Moin ul Haque said that Pakistan and China are close friends and All-Weather Strategic Partners. In recent years two countries have placed and added focus on science and technology cooperation.

We have also created two dedicated working groups on science and technology and IT cooperation under the CPEC framework. Currently, 30 joint research projects are in advanced stages, a testament to our shared commitment to innovation.

As we usher in the second phase of CPEC, poised for industrial and agricultural transformation, our partnership with China will underpin our technological aspirations, laying a robust foundation for a modern economy.

China-India holds Corps Commander Level meeting to resolve border issue

BEIJING, Aug. 16 (APP):: China and India held the 19th round of Corps Commander Level Meeting at Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Indian side on Aug 13-14, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday.

The two sides had a positive, constructive and in-depth discussion on the resolution of the remaining issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Western Sector, he said during his regular briefing held here.

He said that in line with the guidance provided by the leadership, they exchanged views in an open and forward looking manner.

Wang Wenbin said that the two sides agreed to resolve the remaining issues in an expeditious manner and maintain the momentum of dialogue and negotiations through military and diplomatic channels.

“In the interim, the two sides agreed to maintain the peace and tranquility on the ground in the border areas,” he added.

The 18th round of the China-India Corps Commander Level meeting was held at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Chinese side on April 23, this year.

NHMP foils effort to smuggle ice worth millions of rupees

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP): National Highways and Motorway Police have foiled an attempt to smuggle into Punjab huge quantity of ice worth tens of millions of rupees on Islamabad- Peshawar Motorway.

A spokesperson of NHMP said on Wednesday that near Rashkai Service Area, Motorway Police patrolling Sector Commander M-1 Shafiqur Rahman signaled to stop a suspicious vehicle.

The driver fled from the spot and the Sector Commander M1 issued an instruction to stop the suspicious vehicle and also chased it himself.

Seeing the Motorway Police from behind, the accused pulled the vehicle off the road and left the vehicle and fled from the spot.

On searching the suspicious vehicle, 15 packs of ice were recovered from the vehicle.

The Motorway Police seized the suspicious vehicle and started searching for the accused.

The total weight of ice was 15 kg and 600 grams.

The price of ice in the world market is said to be in tens of millions of rupees.

After completing the initial legal procedures, the vehicle and drugs were handed over to the police station of Tor District, Mardan.

Ice (crystal methamphetamine) is a drug that stimulates the brain and nervous system, and is highly addictive.

BISP to start Mobile Registration Vehicle Centers in Sindh, Balochistan

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP): In order to facilitate the registration process for intending beneficiaries in remote areas of the country, the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has planned to launch the facility of Mobile Registration Vehicle Centers in various districts of Sindh and Balochistan.

The first ever such facility has been inaugurated in Karachi this month by the former federal minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, Shazia Marri.

According to an official source, the mobile registration vehicle centres are being started in 25 districts of Sindh and Balochistan including Gothki, Umarkot, Tharparkar, Sanghar and Jamshoro districts of Sindh province while Chagai, Khuzdar, Kech, Awaran, Lasbela, Sibi, Loralai and Qila Saifullah initially which can be extended to the other areas.

The initiative of the Mobile Registration Vehicle Center has been started with the support of the German Government, GIZ and the Sindh Government.

These centres will enable the beneficiaries in far-flung areas to access the registration facilities through mobile vehicles which have been purchased with the support of the German government and GIZ.

Highlighting the one-year performance of BISP, the source revealed that the quarterly stipend of Benazir Kafaalat has been increased up to Rs 8750 per family which is given every quarter while the number of beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Programme has increased from 7.6 million families to 9 million during the last one year.

The BISP staff ensured the distribution of relief money to the deserving ones in the worst conditions during the floods and 70 billion rupees were distributed to the 2.8 million flood victims at the rate of 25000 rupees per family.

BISP identified millions of beneficiaries through Dynamic Registry and enrolled them in the programme. For the first time in the country’s history, people with special abilities and Transgenders were included in the programme.

Around 820,000 deserving people who were removed from the BISP by the previous government were given the right to launch a formal appeal, out of which more than 200,000 beneficiaries have been identified so far.

Mir Sarfraz Domki, Shakeel Durrani call on PM

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):Former Provincial Minister Mir Sarfraz Chakar Domki and Agha Shakeel Durrani called on Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar here on Wednesday.

The two leaders congratulated the Caretaker PM on assuming the office and extended best wishes to him, the PM Office Media Wing said in a press release.

The caretaker prime minister thanked both the leaders for their best wishes.

Motorbikes, three wheelers’ sale drops 23.75% in July

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP): The sale of motorbikes and three-wheelers in the country has witnessed a decrease of 23.75 per cent during the first month of the current fiscal year (2023-24) as compared to sales of the corresponding month of the last year.

During the month under review, as many as 73,588 motorbikes and three-wheelers were sold against the sale of 96,521 units in July (2022-23), according to the Pakistan Automobile Manufacturing Association (PAMA).

The sale of Honda motorcycles dipped by 22.54 per cent from 80,067 units to 62,012 units whereas the sale of Suzuki motorcycles witnessed a decrease of 72.75 per cent from 3,512 units to 957 units during the month under review.

Similarly, the sale of Yamaha motorbikes also went down from 1,261 units to 675 units witnessing a decline of 46.47 per cent while the sale of Road Prince motorbikes witnessed a sharp decline of 61.86 per cent from 2,932 units to 1,118 units.

The sales of United Auto motorcycles witnessed a nominal decline of 0.11 per cent from 7,666 units to 7,657 units.

Meanwhile, the sale of United Auto three-wheelers dipped from 103 units to 43 units while the sale of Qingqi three-wheelers however witnessed an increase of 18.62 percent from 306 units to 363 units.

The sale of Sazgar three-wheelers has also shown an increase of 193.82 per cent from 259 units to 761 units, the data revealed.

ANF seizes 185 kg drugs in three operations

RAWALPINDI, Aug 16 (APP): Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) while conducting three operations in different areas managed to recover 185 kg drugs and arrested six accused, said an ANF Headquarters spokesman here on Wednesday.

He informed that in an operation on Superhighway Jamshoro, 180 kg charras was recovered from secret cavities of a truck.

Three accused residents of Shakarpur and Hyderabad were rounded up during the operation.

In another operation near Luck bypass Quetta, 1 kg Ice drug and 500 grams heroin were recovered from the possession of an arrested accused resident of Chagai going in a taxi vehicle.

In third operation conducted near Hayatabad Toll Plaza Peshawar, 3.6 kg charras concealed in the seats of a Mehran vehicle were recovered.

Two accused residents of Khyber who were trying to smuggle drugs from Bara to Peshawar were netted during the operation.

Separate cases have been registered against the accused while further investigations are underway.
