China’s investment surges by 23.2% in BRI countries during first 7 months

BEIJING, Aug 18, (APP): Chinese enterprises made non-financial direct investments totalling RMB 95.34 billion in Belt and Road countries between January and July of 2023, showcasing a robust 23.2% surge compared to the previous year.

This growth, which translates to around US$13.69 billion (a 15.3% year-on-year hike), accounts for nearly a fifth of the overall investment during the same period. These figures were disclosed by Shu Juetin, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, during the routine press conference held on August 17th.

China has managed to maintain a steady upward trajectory in non-financial overseas investments; the growth rate of China’s direct investment in Belt and Road countries is notably higher than the average level, China Economic Net (CEN) reported on Friday.

Ministry of Commerce data has revealed a sustained growth in China’s foreign investments, with non-financial direct investments totalling RMB500.94 billion reflecting an 18.1% year-on-year increase (approximately USD71.93 billion, with a 10.6% year-on-year climb).

Over the same period, China’s foreign contracted project earnings saw a 6.3% boost to reach RMB563.76 billion. The value of newly signed contracts tallied up to RMB746.36 billion, marking a slight 0.6% uptick year-on-year. Chinese enterprises operating within Belt and Road countries contributed substantially, driving completed turnover from contracted projects to the tune of RMB312 billion. Newly inked contracts within the same countries reached RMB 367.23 billion constituting 55.3% and 49.2% of the total, respectively, for that period.

Dr. Umar Saif assumes charge as Caretaker Federal Minister

ISLAMABAD, Aug 18 (APP): Prominent Pakistani computer scientist, technology expert, Dr. Umar Saif has assumed charge of the Ministry of Science and Technology as the Caretaker Federal Minister.

Secretary Science and Technology, Abdullah Khan Sumbal along with other senior officers welcomed the caretaker minister.
Abdullah Khan Sumbal briefed the caretaker federal minister about the ministries’ affiliated institutions, councils and their responsibilities.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Umar Saif who is recipient of Sitara-i-Imtiaz, said that the economy has great potential in terms of science and technology.

“Information Technology and Science and Technology will be merged to create a knowledge economy”, he said.

He expressed the commitment to take forward the country’s economy through the promotion of IT and Science and Technology.

Madad Ali Sindhi assumes charge as Caretaker Education Minister

ISLAMABAD, Aug 18 (APP): Renowned writer, poet and journalist, Madad Ali Sindhi Friday assumed charge as the caretaker federal minister for the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training.
The officials of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training welcomed the newly appointed Federal Minister.
The Caretaker Federal Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Madad Ali Sindhi was formally introduced to the officials by the Secretary Education Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry.
Madad Ali Sindhi was given a comprehensive briefing about the important functions and responsibilities of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training.
He said that he wanted to understand the problems of the education sector and solve them accordingly.
He continued that he intended to improve the education sector even in the short period of this interim setup. We should try our best to lay the foundation of development even in this short time., he said
Madad Ali Sindhi highlighted the importance of working together for the prosperity of the nation.
Secretary Education, Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry said that the entire ministry is committed to fulfilling the instructions and vision of the federal minister.
He further said that Madad Ali Sindhi brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of education which will benefit the Ministry.

Sarfraz Bugti assumes charge as Caretaker Interior Minister

ISLAMABAD, Aug 18 (APP): Caretaker Minister for Interior Senator Sarfraz Bugti formally assumed the charge of office on Friday.

Secretary Interior Syed Ali Murtaza along with officials welcomed the 47th Interior Minister minister on his arrival at the ministry. He was given a guard of honour and then introduced to the senior officers of the ministry.

Sarfarz Bugti was given a the detailed briefing about the ministry, its functioning and the attached departments.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the protection of life and property of every citizen was the utmost responsibility of the State. The tragic Jaranwala incident was against the teachings of Islam and Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and extremely shameful, he said, adding no one would be allowed to take the law in their hands.

He said every citizen’s free movement was protected under the law and Constitution and all stakeholders would have to work together to ensure that right.

The minister warned the officials that the corruption would not be tolerated at any level. He also imposed ban on the issuance of new arms licenses.

9 die, 1,165 injured in Punjab road accidents

LAHORE, Aug 18 (APP):At least nine persons were killed and 1,165 others injured in 1,154 road traffic crashes in Punjab during the last 24 hours.
As many as 609 people with serious injuries were shifted to different hospitals, while 556 victims with minor injuries were treated at the incident site by the rescue medical teams.
Furthermore, the analysis showed that 565 drivers, 46 underage drivers, 152 pedestrians, and 457 passengers were among the victims of road traffic crashes. The statistics show that 281 accidents were reported in Lahore, which affected 291 persons, placing the provincial capital at top of the list, followed by 76 in Faisalabad with 68 victims, and at third Multan with 72 road accidents and 67 victims.
According to the data, 1,002 motorbikes, 63 auto-rickshaws, 91 motorcars, 21 vans, nine passenger buses, 26 trucks and 122 other types of vehicles and slow-moving carts were involved in the road traffic accidents.
