Pakistan defeat Australia in IBSA World Games to advance to final

ISLAMABAD, Aug 23 (APP): Pakistan blind cricket team on Wednesday advanced to the final of the ongoing International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) World Blind Games with a convincing six-wicket win against Australia.

Batting first Australia scored 107 runs in the allotted 20 overs, according to information received here.

Australia’s opening pair of M Cameron and M McCarthy provided a decent start to their team, with a superb 53-run stand.

Muhammad Salman provided a much-needed breakthrough to Pakistan by dismissing skipper McCarthy, who scored 19 off 27 balls.

But Cameron stood his ground firm and kept the scoreboard ticking while losing partners at the other end. He scored 41 off 47 balls.

Besides the openers, none of the Australian batters could make it to the double figures.

Matiullah, Israr Hassan and Fakhar Abbas claimed two wickets each for Pakistan, while Muhammad Salman and Muhammad Asif grabbed one wicket apiece.

Chasing 108, Pakistan comfortably recorded their third consecutive win in the tournament for the loss of just three wickets and 33 balls to spare.

Mohsin Khan led Pakistan’s run chase with a 35-ball 37, hitting a boundary, while Matiullah remained unbeaten on 23.

Moain Aslam (15) and Zafar Iqbal (12) were the other main contributors.

The third consecutive win steered the Pakistan team to the final.

In their last group match, they will take on face England on Thursday.

Pakistan launched their World Blind Games campaign with an 18-run victory over traditional rivals India before registering a seven-wicket against Bangladesh on Tuesday.

US envoy calls on Jalil Abbas Jilani

ISLAMABAD, Aug 23 (APP):United States Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome called on Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani here on Wednesday and discussed matters relating to mutual interests.

During the meeting, the two leaders exchanged views on state of bilateral relations and noted the positive track of bilateral relations.

They also agreed to deepen economic cooperation and security cooperation.

PM Kakar launches monsoon tree plantation campaign

ISLAMABAD, Aug 23 (APP): Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Wednesday launched the monsoon tree plantation campaign as part of the “Green Pakistan Programme 2023” by planting a sapling here.

Speaking on the occasion, the prime minister stressed to work with national spirit beyond politics to deal with the climate change issues.

He said effective measures were inevitable to protect against the negative impacts of climate change.

He maintained that despite the fact that its share in the global emission of greenhouse gases was less than one percent, Pakistan had been the most affected by the climate change.

He said Islam taught the rights of Almighty Allah, human beings and the plants, therefore, “We need to value these blessings”.

The prime minister said pollution and other factors affecting the environment had negative impacts, such as floods, earthquakes or other natural disasters.

He called upon the leadership of political parties and civil society to make efforts for addressing the climate change issue on priority.

The international community should also play its role to avert the negative effects of climate change, the prime minister added.

On the occasion, the prime minister was informed during a briefing that this year, a total of 11 million saplings would be planted across the country under the monsoon plantation campaign.

“This year, 13.98 million saplings were planted across the country under the Spring Plantation Campaign.”

The prime minister was informed that the Ministry of Climate Change, in collaboration with the Provincial Forestry Department was taking steps to create awareness about the importance of plantation campaigns.

Infrastructure projects vital in improving connectivity, tackling climate-change challenges: Sami Saeed

ISLAMABAD, Aug 23 (APP): Caretaker Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Muhammad Sami Saeed on Wednesday said infrastructure development projects played a crucial role in improving connectivity and tackling the challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity.

He expressed these views while chairing performance review meetings on the functions of infrastructure development and Monitoring & Evaluation Wings.

In a meeting, Member Infrastructure Waqas Anwar gave a detailed overview of projects spanning diverse sectors in transportation and communication.

The minister stressed that infrastructure development projects always played a key role in improving connectivity and in meeting the challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity.

He said building resilient and weather-resistant infrastructure to embrace climate-induced calamities was the need of the hour.

In another subsequent meeting that reviewed the progress of the Monitoring and Evaluation Wing, Dr Zahir Shah, the respective Member, and Project Director M & E, briefed on real-time project monitoring and evaluation.

The presentation also underscored the Intelligent Project Automation System and outlined forthcoming action plans.

It was highlighted that with the integration of technology, impact analysis of development projects had become mandatory under directions issued by the Central Development Working Party for comprehensive project assessment.

Minister Sami Saeed expressed his resolve and commitment to continue the development endeavours, saying “Progress and Development warrants harnessing and optimal utilization of resources with an entrenched Monitoring and Evaluation mechanism in place.”

He said the function of the Ministry’s Monitoring and Evaluation Wing of the Ministry was commendable as it laid the groundwork to employ information technology that would improve the quality and timeliness in the Monitoring and Evaluation of the projects.

In a resource-constraint environment, Sami Saeed said a robust Monitoring and Evaluation mechanism was indispensable in improving the effectiveness of development expenditures.

The minister also emphasized accelerating the pace of ongoing projects with quality execution.

Senate body for streamlining administrative affairs of PSM, resolving issues of employees

KARACHI, Aug 23 (APP): The Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production was informed on Wednesday that the appointment of CEO of Pakistan Steel Mills and the constitution of new Board of Directors was on cards as the process in the regard was near completion.
The Committee met with Khalida Ateeb in the Chair at Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) and was attended by members of the Committee Senator Fida Muhammad, Senator Zeeshan Khanzada and Senator Imam ud Din Shouqeen.
Joint Secretary Ministry of Industries and Production Naveed Ahsan and members of the functional committee formed to run affairs of the PSM, briefed the Committee about the rehabilitation of PSM, position of retrenchment of employees, privatization plan, township area, encroachments and security issues.
The Committee, stressing on the need of revival of Pakistan, directed to streamline the administrative affairs and resolve the issues of employees.
Chairperson Khalida Ateeb raised the issue of security and reported incidents of theft of installations and expressed concerns over performance of the security department that employed over 500 employees.
The Committee also sought a comprehensive report on alleged incidents of theft of installations and assets of Pakistan Steel Mills causing loses to PSM and the national exchequer amounting to billions.
Senator Fida Muhammad maintained that the largest industrial complex of the country had resources of the nation in its foundation and measures were required to resume its operations.
Expressing dissatisfaction on performance of the PSM management he called for resolving the issues of all the employees on priority and the report the Committee about progress in the regard.
The Committee directed the PSM administration to submit Audit Reports for the year 2021-22, Financial details of the revenue and annual expenditure, serving employees, and Privatization procedure as well as matters of Township residential area to the committee at the earliest.
Despite of operational closure of PSM, there were total 3200 employees working in various functional sections of the industrial entity and the government was providing more than Rs.110 million for their net salaries. Required funds for retrenchment of employees were also released by the government, he added.
The Committee was informed that PSM was solely dependent on national exchequer and all the expenses were borne by the government. To generate revenue and under some policy for industrial growth over 1500 acres of PSM land was leased to private sector for setting up industries and Bin Qasim Industrial Park that attracted FDI and joint ventures from abroad.
Senator Imam ud Din Shouqeen noted that Board of Directors was non-functional and its chairman was out of country for over a year. He asked the management to submit a plan for the rehabilitation of PSM by resuming its operation and other means and any probable strategy other than the privatization of the mills.
The employment opportunities could only be created through industrialization as the government alone could not achieve the task, he stated and added that the Committee was keen to resolve the issues of PSM and willing to play a proactive role for the objectives.
The Committee’s Chairperson specially allowed the representatives of the employee including officers and labour to present their issues and grievances before the committee. They said that employees were facing various issues including low salaries, non-provision of annual increase, health, education and other facilities while certain issues relating to retrenchment and reinstatement orders of National Assembly’s Special Committee chaired by Abdul Qadir Mandokhel taken to courts by management though those could be settled by dialogue.
Senator Khilada Ateeb assured the employees that they would be taken on board about decisions and the initiative for the rehabilitation of PSM.
The Committee was briefed that there were around 3700 residential units of different categories in Township area- the residential colony owned and operated by the Steel mills- and those were provided to serving or retired employees of PSM while 345 units were also rented out to private persons.
The Committee was also informed that around 300 acres of the land were under encroachment and measures were taken to remove them and 95 acres were vacated from the squatters.

Save the Children Int’l committed towards sustainable climate resilient solutions in Sindh

KARACHI, Aug 23 (APP):As part of response, recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation under Floods Response 2022, Save the Children International (SCI) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Inger Ashing is meeting with senior officials of the Sindh government.
The delegation seeks insights and fostering collaborations for carrying out the advanced phase of Floods Response 2022 and contributing toward disaster-resilient Sindh.
The delegation comprising the Country Director Pakistan Muhammad Khuram Gondal, the Senior Management Team of the Pakistan Country Office, members from the Asia Pacific region and an international team visited PDMA Sindh, Department of Environment and Climate Change, and Sindh Peoples Housing for the Flood Affectees (SPHF), a news release said.
In their mission towards floods resilient province, Save the Children International and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish collaborative mechanisms to respond to future emergencies and disasters in the province, and coordinate for sustainable climate-resilient planning, programming, and investments.
The main objective of this MoU is to make Sindh Province disaster resilient and the community well-equipped to mitigate the effects of disasters and take timely actions.
Director General PDMA Sindh Syed Salman Shah appreciated the role of SCI during floods 2022 and thanked CEO SCI for taking a keen interest in flood response in Pakistan and working towards making Pakistan climate resilient.
CEO SCI, Inger Ashing after assessing the magnitude of devastation caused by the floods in 2022, said that only joint efforts can help manage disasters of such scale and prepare for the future. “I wholeheartedly appreciate the efforts of the Government of Sindh in initiating these multi-sectoral integrated programs to deal with the adversities of floods 2022.”
She expressed keen interest in working with government machinery to make complete reconstruction and rehabilitation possible in the most effective manner.
She further added that “I would like to highlight that Climate Change is the cross-cutting theme of Save The Children International and we are committed to safeguarding the well-being of communities, especially children and protecting them from the effects of climate change.“
Country Director Save the Children in Pakistan, Muhammad Khuram Gondal, briefed government officials on efforts made to ensure the physical and mental well being of communities especially children in the flood-hit districts and expressed his commitment to work together with PDMA Sindh to make Sindh province disaster resilient.
CEO SCI, Inger Ashing also met with officials of the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Sindh. Agha Wasif Abbas, Secretary of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Sindh said that the scale of devastation post floods 2022 served to catalyze the public sector development paradigm towards sustainable climate-resilient planning, programming, and investments.
Department of Environment and Climate Change being swift in their disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts has launched Sindh’s Strategic Policy for Floods Response 2022. Director General Climate Change & Coastal Development, Government of Sindh, Akhlaque A. Qureshi shared that this strategic policy is a ‘live document’ that aims to guide Sindh’s Flood Response, from a medium- to long-term perspective, to foster climate-resilient policies and strategies.
On their visit to SPHF, the Secretary Implementation, Govt of Sindh, and CEO SPHF, Khalid Mehmood Sheikh shared with Save the Children that besides continuous efforts of SPHF, there are still many areas that need attention especially initiatives for Persons with Disabilities including children, women inclusion, and WASH for which SPHF is willing to collaborate with Save the Children International.
The representatives of both organisations decided to work closely for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of flood-affected areas of Sindh.

2 outlaws arrested : weapon recovered

Dera Ismail Khan, Aug 23 (APP): Dera police during a search and strike operation against criminal elements arrested two accused and recovered weapons from their possession in the limits of Band Korai police station on Wednesday.
According to the details, SHO Band Korai police station Khalil Khan Baloch checked around 15 houses during the search and strike operation in the area, during checking police arrested accused Barkatullah son of Muhammad Ashraf resident of village Toba and recovered 01 repeater gun and 05 cartridges were recovered from the possession of the accused.
During another action, accused Rehmat Khan resident of Norang was arrested and police recovered 01 repeater with 05 cartridges and 02 pistols with ammunition from the possession of the accused.
The police registered separate cases against the arrested criminals and started further investigation.
