8 dead, 1148 injured in road accidents in 24 hours

LAHORE, Aug 25 (APP):At least eight persons died and 1148 were injured in 1,140  road accidents in all 37 districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours.
Out of these, 596 people with serious injuries were shifted to hospitals, while 552 victims with minor injuries were treated on the spot by Rescue medical teams thus reducing the burden of hospitals.
Furthermore, the analysis showed that 580 drivers, 44 underage drivers, 161 pedestrians, and 415 passengers were among the victims.
The statistics show that 236 accidents were reported in Lahore which affected 235 persons placing the provincial capital at top of the list followed by 93 in Multan with 76 victims and at third Faislabad with 69 accidents and 62 victims.
According to the data 999, motorbikes, 60 auto-rickshaws, 116 cars, 23 vans, 8 passenger buses, 21 trucks and 111 other types of vehicles and carts were involved in the accidents.

ISSI hosts Sichuan University delegation

ISLAMABAD, Aug 25 (APP): The China-Pakistan Study Centre (CPSC) here on Friday hosted a four-member delegation from the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), Sichuan University China at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI).

The delegation was led by Associate Professor Dr. Zeng Xiangyu and included Dr. Gao Liang, He Xiangyi and Li Jialun, a press release said.

Wide range of subjects including the rapidly transforming global politics, Pakistan-China relations, the ‘Decade of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)’, water issues in South Asia, evolving situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s role in the Indian Ocean Region and its maritime strategy came under discussion in the meeting.

DG ISSI Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, in his remarks, extended a warm welcome to the visiting scholars from China. He stated that friendship with China was the cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy and the time-tested, all-weather Pakistan-China strategic cooperative partnership was a factor of stability in the region and beyond.

The China Pakistan Economic Corridor, he added, is pivotal for Pakistan’s economic turnaround and for regional connectivity and prosperity.

He added that Pakistan fully supported President Xi Jinping’s vision to promote peace and development across the globe through major initiatives including the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI) and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI).

Sharing his perspective on major-power competition, DG ISSI Ambassador (R) Sohail Mahmood stressed that it must be managed responsibly and it should not turn into confrontation. Pakistan would continue to stress that the key drivers of international relations should be peaceful co-existence and cooperation, and not confrontation and conflict.

Earlier, Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director CPSC, in his remarks, briefed the visiting Chinese delegation about the structure and functioning of ISSI. He lauded the efforts made by China for global development, especially the CPEC. He recalled his recent two visits to China and emphasised people-to-people contacts for enhanced connectivity.

Dr. Neelum Nigar, Director Centre for Strategic Perspectives (CSP), in her remarks, discussed the water issues in South Asia. She said that climate change and global warming were exacerbating the water-related issues and underscored the need for collective efforts to minimise such non-traditional threats.

Ms. Amina Khan, Director Centre for Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa (CAMEA), in her remarks, evaluated the situation in Afghanistan. She said that the Interim Government was in power in Afghanistan for two years now and was seeking to grapple with the issues of governance, human rights, and counter-terrorism. The world must remain engaged and induce the fulfillment of commitments made by the Afghanistan side.

Malik Qasim Mustafa, Director Arms Control and Disarmament Centre (ACDC) said that Pakistan was a developing country, protecting its maritime interests while remaining within its resources. Pakistan has the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of almost 240,000 square kilometres and protecting its coastline is a part of its national security, he added.

The remarks were followed by an interactive session in which different aspects of Pakistan-China relations were discussed and the research scholars dilated on wide-ranging global and regional topics.

In conclusion, Chairman Board of Governors ISSI, Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, shared his views and thanked the delegation for the visit.

4 killed, 10 injured in Toba Tek Singh road accident

TOBA TEK SINGH, Aug 25 (APP):A collision between a Hiace van and a tractor-trolley claimed the lives of four persons, while more than 10 others were injured, here on Friday.
According to the police and Rescue-112 sources, a van, bearing registration number LXL-8389, was going from Rajana to Kamaliya when it collided with a tractor-trolley, bearing registration number TSS-659, coming from the opposite direction due to a tyre burst near Chadhar petrol pump on Kamaliya Road.
As a result, four people including Khushnud (30), Shamim Akhtar (55), wife of Muhammad Iqbal, caste Rajput, a resident of Ghulam Muhammad Abad, Mazhar (12), son of Abdul Ghaffar, and an unidentified man died on-the-spot.
The injured were identified as: Ghulam Rasool (40), son of Shah Muhammad, caste Bhatti, a resident of Mohallah Khokharabad; Abdul Waqar, son of Abdul Sattar, caste Rajput, a resident of 35/WB; Hajira Bibi, wife of Abdul Ghaffar, a resident of Faisalabad; Uzma (17), wife of Shahzad, a resident of Kelianwali, Faisalabad; Maqbool Ahmad (50), son of Abdul Sattar, a resident of Geoshala, Chichawatni; Ghulam Rasool (40), son of Shah Mehmood, a resident of Kamalia; Shabbir (25), son of Bashir, a resident of Chichawatni; Faizan, son of Abdul Ghaffar, a resident of Faisalabad; Babar Ali, son of Liaquat Ali, caste Pathan, a resident of Kamalia; and Alina, daughter of Liaquat Ali, caste Bhatti, a resident of Bhattian Wala. They all were admitted to DHQ Hospital Toba Tek Singh for treatment.
After receiving information, SDPO Sadar Circle Toba Tek Singh Mohammad Shafiq ASI, and Inspector Nazir reached the spot and initiated the legal proceedings. Bodies of the deceased were shifted to Rural Health Centre Rajana by a Rescue-1122 team.
An unidentified seriously injured man was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital, but he also succumbed to his injuries.
According to the police sources, bodies of the deceased were handed over to the heirs after necessary legal procedure. The driver and conductor escaped from the spot; however, the tractor trolley and Hiace were impounded by the police. Legal action had been started by filing an FIR against drivers of the Hiace van and tractor-trolley.

Aneeq vows to punish culprits of Jaranwala tragedy, says 177 suspects rounded up

KARACHI, Aug 25 (APP): Caretaker Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Aneeq Ahmed Khan on Friday vowed to punish culprits involved in the Jaranwala incident, saying that so far 177 suspects have been rounded up.

Minister Aneeq told media persons during his visit to Karachi Press Club (KPC). KPC President Saeed Sarbazi and Secretary Shoaib Ahmed were also present on the occasion.

Aneeq said minorities including the Christian community enjoy equal rights in the country and the government would ensure the safety of their worship places.

He said the caretaker prime minister, ministers as well as Ulema, people, and politicians had vehemently condemned the Jaranwala vandalism.

Replying to a question, he said that a neighboring country did not want to see Pakistan as a prosperous and developing country.

Commenting on the recent visit of the Minister of Hajj & Umrah of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Dr. Tawfiq Bin Fawzan Al Rabiah, he said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on the construction of Pakistan Houses in Mecca and Madina demolished during the expansion of Masjid-ul-Haram.

The Minister said that he also talked to the Saudi Minister about providing equal facilities to Pakistani pilgrims including immigration facilities in the country.

Earlier, he said that Karachi was the economic hub of the country and he attached a close relation to the Karachi Press Club (KPC). He said he was available to take the issues of KPC to the prime minister and get them resolved on priority.

CM directs Hyderabad Administration to vacate illegally occupied labour flats

KARACHI, Aug 25 (APP):Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (R) Maqbool Baqar presiding over a meeting of the Labour Department directed district administration Hyderabad to vacate illegal occupation of the flats constructed for labourers and ordered repair and renovation of labour flats at Gulshan-e-Maymar.
The meeting was attended by Minister Labour Omar Soomro, Advocate General Hassan Akbar, PSCM Raheem Shaikh, Advocate Shabir Shah, Chairman SRB Asif Memon, Secretary Labour Laeeq Memon, and other concerned officers.
The chief minister was informed that the Workers Welfare Board (WWB) was responsible for
the Development/Construction of Flats and Houses, Free of cost quality education to workers’ children, Financial Aid to purchase Uniforms, Shoes, Books, and bags, Grants in Aid for marriage of worker’s daughters, Post Matric Scholarships for workers’ children, financial aid to Legal heirs of the Deceased worker.
The meeting was told that from 2018 to 2023 an amount of Rs 1333.130 million have been disbursed as grant-in-aid for marriage to 13322 cases/workers.
 Rs 244.456 million scholarships to 3175 students and Rs 2160.625 death grants for 4360 cases.
To a question, the chief minister was told that the WWB has 11565 flats, 6257 houses, 5443 plots, 23 schools and colleges, kidney center Landi being run by SESSI, NICVD Hospital Sukkur, and 10 Vocational Training Centers.
The chief minister was told that the 128 labour flats were under occupation in Hyderabad Labour Colony.
At this, the CM directed the deputy commissioner Hyderabad to vacate the flats and hand them over to the labour dept so that they could be allotted to the registered workers.
It was pointed out that some of the flats vacated from illegal occupation at Gulshan-e-Maymar needed repair and renovation.
The chief minister directed Minister Law Omar Soomro to visit the falts with secretary labout and directed the labour dept to repair them at the earliest for allotment to the laborers.

331 drug peddlers arrested in 24 hours

MULTAN, Aug 25 (APP):Police have arrested 331 drug peddlers during a special crackdown launched across the region by police in the last 24 hours besides recovering drugs from their possession.
In line with special directives of the Regional Police Officer (RPO) Capt (retd) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry, the police launched a crackdown against drug peddlers and registered 331 FIRs and arrested 331 drug peddlers. The police also recovered 185 kilogram Hashish, 8000 litre liquor and other drugs during the last 24 hours.
The RPO said in a statement issued here on Friday that the provincial government has directed stern action against drug peddlers.
He said that zero-tolerance policy was being followed against drug peddling across the region and the police tightening the noose around the drug dealers.
He said that all district police officers of the region have been directed to submit report on a daily basis regarding the crackdown adding that it has been decided to award cash prizes and commendatory certificates among officers over good performance.
