Chinese economy remains strong, resilient: Mao Ning

BEIJING, Sep 12 (APP): The Chinese economy remains strong and resilient, with ample potential and vitality, and the fact that the fundamentals sustaining China’s sound economic growth in the long run stay unchanged, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said on Tuesday.

Responding to some Western officials’ comments about talking down China’s economy at a regular briefing here, she said, that every now and then, the “China collapse” theory surfaces, but the reality is that China’s economy has not collapsed.

Mao Ning said, the world economy has been recovering sluggishly and the external environment has been severe and complex since the beginning of this year, however, China’s economy has continued to revive and rebound.

In the first half of the year, China’s GDP grew by 5.5 percent year on year, significantly faster than last year’s 3 percent.

The International Monetary Fund has predicted that China’s economy will grow by 5.2 percent this year, contributing one-third of the growth of the world’s economy, making it the main driver for global economic growth, Mao noted.

China will keep advancing high-level opening up, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries, and share its dividends of development, Mao said, adding China’s development will bring more opportunities to its Asian neighbors and the world.

Concentration on self-dependence vital for country’s economic revival: PM

GILGIT, Sep 12 (APP): Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Tuesday urged all the sectors to concentrate all of their attention and energies on achieving self-dependence which was inevitable to put the country’s economy on course to revival.

The prime minister, chairing a meeting of the Gilgit Baltistan cabinet here during his two-day visit, advised the GB government to fully exploit the potential of the cultivable land of the region instead of depending on the government’s subsidy.

In the meeting, the prime minister was apprised of different issues including the non-provision of the subsidy on the wheat crop.

The prime minister assured the GB leadership of the federal government’s all-out cooperation.

In the meeting, proposals were put forward to improve the performance of the GB police as well as enhancement of investment and business activities in the region.

The prime minister directed the relevant authorities to formulate a comprehensive strategy for GB’s economic revival.

In the briefing, it was highlighted that the resolution of most of the GB issues was linked with the investment in the region.

Discussing the law and order situation, Prime Minister Kakar said the protection of every citizen was the state’s responsibility.

He assured that the government would not tolerate spreading chaos in the name of religion and a strict action would be taken against such elements.

Interim federal ministers, members of the GB cabinet, GB chief secretary, and relevant senior officers attended the meeting.

Senate committee reiterates commitment to fostering supportive business environment

KARACHI, Sep 12 (APP): The Senate Standing Committee on Commerce, on Tuesday, reiterated its commitment to fostering a supportive environment for businesses in Pakistan and assured traders and the industrial community of their fullest support for resolving the issues.

The meeting of the Senate Standing Committee was held here at Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP). Chairman of the committee Senator Zeeshan Khanzada presided over the meeting while Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Senator Imamuddin Shouqeen, Senator Muhammad Qasim and Senator Khalida Ateeb attended the meeting, said a statement issued here.

Chief Executive Officer TDAP, Muhammad Zubair Motiwala, briefed the committee about trade and investment opportunities in Food, Agriculture, IT and other sectors in Pakistan, the performance of TDAP and outcomes of Pakistan Trade Facilitation Portal.

Chairman Committee Senator Zeeshan Khanzada, on the occasion, said that the visit of the Committee and subsequent deliberations underline the Senate Committee’s dedication to fostering a supportive environment for businesses in Pakistan.

The Committee would remain steadfast in its mission to facilitate economic growth, address challenges faced by the business community, and promote a robust export-oriented sector in the country, he vowed.

Representatives of the business community from KCCI also attended the meeting and shared core issues faced by the community, especially the export-oriented sector and emphasized the need for consistent economic policy coupled with integrated reforms in the taxation and energy sectors.

The meeting while discussing the energy crisis and high energy tariff observed that persistent challenges stemming from the energy crisis and increase in power tariff has affected business operations and competitiveness.

The KCCI delegation indicated that reduced gas supply to industrial units, higher policy rates and delay in opening letter of credits (LCs) and issuance of refunds by FBR were causing difficulties for business and industry.

They demanded resolving issues of gas supply to industries, swift opening of LC, reducing policy rate and urgent release of tax refunds of Sales Tax and DLTL scheme for increasing production and improving liquidity position.

The committee chairman Senator Zeeshan Khanzada assured KCCI that the Senate Committee on Commerce is committed to addressing the problems and recommendations and concerns of the trade and industrial community would be raised on relevant forums for immediate attention and resolution.

Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Senator Imamuddin Shouqeen, Senator Muhammad Qasim and Senator Khalida Ateeb endorsed the view point of the Chairman Committee and assured of their full support in redressal of the problems of the business community.

SC dismisses plea for Aamer Liaqat’s postmortem

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP): The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday dismissed a petition regarding the postmortem of prominent TV host Dr Aamer Liaqat who died in June 2022.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan heard the case. At the outset of hearing, Justice Ahsan remarked that after passing of so much time the petition had become ineffective. The body would have discomposed now after lapse of years, he added.

Dania Aamer’s lawyer said that they wanted to submit more documents if the court granted some time in this regard. The reasons of the death of Aamer Liaqat could be identified through the postmortem.

However, the lawyer prayed the court to grant permission to withdraw the case. The court rejected the request and dismissed the case.

Defence and Martyrs’ Day observed in Pakistan Embassy, Beijing

BEIJING, Sep 12 (APP): Pakistan Defence Day and Martyrs’ Day were observed in the Pakistan Embassy in Beijing here on Tuesday to pay homage to martyrs of the 1965 war as well as to those brave souls who rendered ultimate sacrifice in the defense of Pakistan.
The ceremony began as national anthems of Pakistan and China were played.
Chief of Staff of the People’s Liberation Army Navy, China, Vice Admiral Hu Zhongming graced the occasion as chief guest, along with Pakistan Ambassador to China, Moin ul Haque, and Defence and Army Attaché Brig. Ghulam Mustafa sliced the cake to mark the day.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Moin ul Haque said, the Defence Day is commemorated as a tribute to our brave soldiers who never hesitate in even laying down their lives for defending our beloved homeland.
Around 58 years ago, Pakistan faced unprovoked aggression in the darkness of the night, which was a blatant violation of international law and was against the norms of inter-state relations.
In the face of overwhelming odds, the Pakistan Armed Forces, with the support and unyielding spirit of our people, defended our sovereignty and homeland. With its blood and sweat, the Pakistani nation wrote a new chapter of courage and conviction, he added.
Ambassador Haque also highlighted Pakistan’s sacrifices in its resolve to fight the menace of terrorism and extremism.
Underlining friendliness and goodwill as the key features of Pakistan’s foreign policy, the Ambassador highlighted Pakistan’s support for the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and its contributions to UN peacekeeping missions.
He also reiterated Pakistan’s firm support for the right to self-determination of the people of Kashmir as enshrined in various UNSC resolutions and thanked China for its principled stand on the same.
The Ambassador also spoke at length about the strength of the China-Pakistan friendship that had withstood the vicissitudes and vagaries of time for over 72 years.
He also underscored the high degree of strategic trust and close cooperation developed between the two armed forces through joint defense projects, training, and exercises, and stated that flagship projects like JF-17 Thunder aircraft, VT-4 tanks, naval frigates, and submarines had become the symbol of this close friendship.
He also highlighted the generous assistance by the PLA to Pakistan during the pandemic and recent floods in Pakistan.
In the end, the Ambassador reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace and peaceful co-existence.
In his remarks, Defence Attache Brig. Ghulam Mustafa said that Defence Day is a momentous day in the history of the Pakistani nation when valiant sons of soil laid their lives to defend the motherland against belligerent attacks by the enemy.
On this day, September 6, 1965, our armed forces and the entire Pakistani nation displayed extraordinary courage and spirit in thwarting the evil design of the enemy.
Pakistan’s armed forces have given unprecedented sacrifices in its war against terrorism, ensuring peace and security in the country and the region, he added.
He also thanked the Chinese PLA for its support towards the Pakistan Armed Forces and contributions to our special and strategic military-to-military relationship.
National songs were played while documentaries on Pakistan were shown during the well-attended event.
The event was attended by senior Chinese civil and military officials, members of the diplomatic corps, Defense Attaches, media, members of the Pakistani community, and officers of the Embassy.

Jamal Shah for further strengthening cultural, literary ties with Sri Lanka

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP): Caretaker Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Jamal Shah called for further strengthening cultural and literary relations with Sri Lanka to further cement bilateral ties.

He stated this during a live performance of Sri Lankan cultural troupe comprised of Chandana Wickrarmasighe and the Dancers’ Guild here at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) on Tuesday.

The cultural show was jointly organized by the National Heritage and Culture Division, PNCA, Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi in collaboration with the Consulate General of Sri Lanka Karachi aiming to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Diplomatic relations of Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Augustine Christy Ruban, Charge De Affair and Mr U. L. Niyas Deputy Head of Mission Sri Lanka High Commission, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Karachi Jagath Abeywarna and Director General PNCA were also present on the occasion.

The dance troupe entertained the audience with traditional, folk, creative and modern dancing and got big applause from the audience at the jam-packed auditorium of PNCA.

Federal Minister Jamal Shah also met with the troupe artists and expressed his happiness with their mesmerizing performance.

He said that Pakistan and Sri Lanka enjoy cordial relations in all walks of life that are firmly based on mutual trust.

The minister said that the Pakistan-Sri Lanka relationship is rooted in shared cultural ties as Pakistan hosts ancient relics and architecture central to Buddhist heritage in the Taxila.

Chandana Wickrarmasighe and the Dancers’ Guild of Sri Lanka, a dance troupe entertained the audience with traditional, folk, creative and modern dancing in the show.

Earlier, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Karachi Jagath Abeywarna said that Chandana an acclaimed dancer and founder of the Dancers Guild, has bagged many local and international awards for outstanding choreography, rhythm, style and character.

Speaking on the occasion, Chandana said that the Guild is committed to promoting traditional and fusion dance acts merging culture and contemporary music; displaying passion and imagination through stimulating movements and vibrant beats.
