Motorbikes, three-wheelers sale drops 18.56% during July-August

ISLAMABAD, Sep 13 (APP): The sale of motorbikes and three-wheelers in the country has witnessed a decrease of 18.56 per cent during the first two months of the current fiscal year (2023-24) as compared to sales of the corresponding months of the last year.

During the months under review, as many as 161,906 motorbikes and three-wheelers were sold against the sale of 198,824 units in July-August (2022-23), according to the Pakistan Automobile Manufacturing Association (PAMA).

The sale of Honda motorcycles dipped by 16.96 per cent from 165,090 units to 137,083 units whereas the sale of Suzuki motorcycles witnessed a decrease of 61.54 per cent from 6,967 units to 2,679 units during the months under review.

Similarly, the sale of Yamaha motorbikes also went down from 2,501 units to 1,625 units witnessing a decline of 35.02 per cent while the sale of Road Prince motorbikes witnessed a sharp decline of 55.80 per cent from 6,105 units to 2,698 units.

The sales of United Auto motorcycles witnessed a nominal decline of 2.83 per cent from 15,264 units to 14,832 units.

Meanwhile, the sale of United Auto three-wheelers dipped from 460 units to 85 units while the sale of Qingqi three-wheelers however witnessed an increase of 3.36 percent from 891 units to 921 units.

The sale of Sazgar three-wheelers has also shown an increase of 85.18 per cent from 999 units to 1,850 units, the data revealed.

59 FIRs, registered for violating dengue SOPs in 24 hours

RAWALPINDI, Sep 13 (APP):The District Health Authority (DHA) had lodged 59 FIRs and sealed ten premises for violations of anti-dengue SOPs during the last 24 hours.
District Coordinator Epidemics Prevention and Control (DCEPC), Dr. Sajjad Mehmood, said Wednesday that the health department, in collaboration with allied departments, had issued tickets to 15 and imposed a fine of Rs 75,000 for violations of dengue SOPs during the last 24 hours.
Presently, the health officer informed that 96 patients were admitted to different health facilities in the district, of which 66 were confirmed cases and 419 were discharged after treatment.
Dr. Sajjad added that with the arrival of 34 more cases during the last 24 hours, the district’s total tally had reached 485 confirmed cases.
Among the new cases, he informed that 17 patients had arrived from the Potohar town urban area, 9 from the Municipal Corporation, 4 from Chaklala cantonment, and three from the Taxila cantonment area.
The health officer added that September was critical for dengue spread and urged the residents to adopt precautionary measures to avoid mosquito bites.

Quality research witnesses substantial increase as current year publications reach 29000

ISLAMABAD, Sep 13 (APP): Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed has said that the number of universities as well as the quality of research has witnessed a substantial increase in the last two decades.

Talking to APP, he highlighted a substantial transformation in the realm of research with the current year boasting 28,967 publications in Impact Factor Journals.

He said that owing to these factors and many other initiatives a number of Pakistani universities are now featured in World and Asian rankings.

The chairman of HEC also shed light on the remarkable evolution of universities in the country over the past two decades.

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed said that HEC’s efforts are underway for improvement in gender parity in higher education institutions, growth in PhD faculty and establishment of Centres of Excellence in emerging disciplines such as Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Quantum Computing, etc.

The Chairman underscored the revamping of research promotion and commercialisation initiatives and briefed the minister about the establishment of the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (ORIC) and Business Incubation Centre (BIC) in universities across the country as well as the launch of Research for Innovation (RFI) portal for better coordination among all the stakeholders.

He also underlined HEC’s quality assurance programmes, accreditation activities as well and national and international scholarship initiatives.

Dr Mukhtar Ahmed also shed light on various other HEC policies, groundbreaking special projects, and a forward-looking roadmap that charts the commission’s course into the future.

Pak-India batters dominate ICC ODI Rankings

ISLAMABAD, Sep 13 (APP): Indian opener Shubman Gill has attained a career-best second position and is the highest-ranked among three Indian players who are now in the top 10 of the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, the first time this happened since January 2019.

Gill, who had scored 58 and figured in a 121-run opening partnership with captain Rohit Sharma in the Asia Cup match against Pakistan, has moved up one spot while Sharma and Virat Kohli have gained two places each and are sitting in eighth and ninth positions, respectively. Sharma also scored a half-century against Sri Lanka this past week while Kohli advances thanks to his unbeaten 122 against Pakistan.

Sharma, Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan were the three batters in the top 10 in that instance more than four years ago while those three were also in the top six of the batting table back in September 2018.

Pakistan also has three batters in the top 10 less than a month from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Captain Babar Azam is at the top and enjoys a lead of more than 100 rating points over Gill, while Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman are in fifth and 10 positions, respectively.

The latest weekly update, that also considers performances in three matches of the South Africa-Australia series and two matches of the England-New Zealand series, South Africa’s Temba Bavuma has closed in on a top-10 place after striking three centuries and two half-centuries in his last eight ODIs. He has advanced 21 places to 11th position while his previous best was 25th.

Australia players Davis Warner (up one place to fourth), Travis Head (up six places to 20th) and Marnus Labuschagne (up 24 places to 45th) have made significant progress as has the Indian pair of KL Rahul (up 10 places to 37th) and Ishan Kishan (up two places to 22nd).
Aiden Markram, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Liam Livingstone, Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway are among others to gain in the latest update.

New Zealand’s Trent Boult is up to joint-second place among bowlers while Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa is in the top five of the bowling rankings for the first time after taking four wickets in the second match against South Africa.

India’s left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has gained five places to reach seventh position after grabbing nine wickets in two Asia Cup matches.

Railways Police arrest around 3,720 accused over violations

ISLAMABAD, Sep 13 (APP):Pakistan Railways Police claimed to have arrested a total of 3,720 accused due to their involvement in violations of rules and laws and also registered some 3,454 cases against them in eight Railways divisions in one year.
“Around 613 cases were registered in Peshawar Division, 537 in Rawalpindi, 1,023 in Lahore, 307 in Mughalpura workshops, 378 in Multan, 197 in Sukkur, 337 in Karachi, and 62 in Quetta Division,” official sources in the Ministry told APP.
They said the Railways Police Help Desks had been established at all the major railway stations across the country and the performance of Railways Police is quite satisfactory during the last year.
“The Railways Police has handed over 193 missing boys and 68 girls to their heirs and 263 boys, 154 girls, and 43 women who ran away from home to their parents/siblings and the welfare organizations,” they added.
The sources said the lost luggage worth about Rs12.43 million of 2,157 passengers was handed over to them.
Besides, 10,213 passengers were also provided with other facilities like first aid, wheelchairs, and stretchers.
Regarding the performance of Railways Police, they said, “Police are performing duties efficiently despite the limited resources and the performance of Railways Police will be further improved to the optimum level during the next year.”

Pakistan Navy seizes huge cache of narcotics at sea

KARACHI, Sep 13 (APP): The Pakistan Navy in an intelligence-based counter-narcotics operation alongwith the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) seized approximately 782 kilogrammes (Kgs) of narcotics at the Arabian Sea on Wednesday.

The apprehended drugs were stowed in hidden compartments of a fishing boat that was successfully intercepted by a Pakistan Navy Ship, a news release said.

The estimated value of seized narcotics is US $ 235 million in the international market. The seized drugs were subsequently handed over to ANF for further legal proceedings.

The successful execution of the Anti-Narcotics Operation is a demonstration of the Pakistan Navy’s resolve to deter, dissuade and disrupt all illegal activities in the maritime zones of Pakistan.

However, isolated thunderstorm rains with gusty winds are likely to occur over Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan, and Khyber districts during the evening and night.
During the last 24 hours, hot and humid weather prevailed over most districts of the province.
Rainfall recorded during the last 24 hours at different stations of KPK was nil.
The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in °C at different stations of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP): Peshawar City 39/27, Chitral 37/17, Timergara 37/25, Dir 34/22, Mirkhani 38/17, Kalam 28/12, Drosh 38/24, Saidu Sharif 36/19, Pattan 39/26, Malam Jabba 23/15, Takht Bhai 38/27, Kakul 32/19, Balakot 35/24, Parachinar 26/14, Bannu 40/27, Cherat 32/21, D.I. Khan 41/27.
The highest temperature recorded in the province was 41°C in DI Khan.

Shower spell from Friday likely to subside humid conditions

LAHORE, Sep 13 (APP):The Met office on Wednesday predicted wide spread rain/wind-thunderstorm in most parts of the country, including the provincial capital from Friday.
According to a spokesman for the Pakistan meteorological department, moderate monsoon currents from Bay of Bengal are likely to penetrate in upper parts of the country from September 15 (evening/night).
A westerly wave is also likely to enter in these areas on September 16. Under the influence
of this systems, rain/wind-thunderstorm (with few moderate to isolated heavy falls) is expected in Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur and Sheikhupura from 15th (evening/night) to September 20 with occasional gaps.
Rain/wind-thunderstorm is also expected in Mianwali, Sargodha, Khushab, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang and Bhakkar from September 16-18 (evening/night) with occasional gaps.
Moderate to heavy falls may increase the water flows in local nullahs/streams from September 17-19 while moderate to heavy rains may trigger landslides in the vulnerable areas during the period.
Prevailing very hot and humid conditions are likely to subside during the spell and farmers
are advised to manage their crop activities accordingly.
Tourists and travelers are advised to remain cautious to avoid any untoward situation during the period as wind-thunderstorm may damage loose structures like electric poles, solar panels etc.

SHO, Muharrer  suspended

DG Khan, Sep 13 (APP):District Police Officer (DPO) Wednesday suspended Station House Officer (SHO) and Muharrer of Civil Lines Police Station for keeping women illegally in its custody.
Taking notice of the video going viral about the women being held illegally, the DP issued the suspension order today.
After suspension, the DPO deputed SP’s investigation as the inquiry officer. The suspended security officials were made close to the police line.
The DPO said nobody would be allowed to play with honour of the common person in the name of ‘any investigation’.

CDA demolishes over 7k illegal structures in markets, roads, green belts

ISLAMABAD, Sep 13 (APP):The Directorate of Enforcement, Capital Development Authority (CDA) has demolished over 7,000 illegal structures in the markets, roads, green belts, and sidewalk tracks in the federal capital during the last year.
“During the operation, around 12,137 items of encroachers have also been confiscated, subsequently these articles are auctioned. Besides, fines worth Rs. 4.876 million has also been recovered from trespassers as a penalty,” sources in the CDA told APP.
They said, “Directorate of Enforcement has launched as many as 1,363 anti-encroachment operations carried out across the board in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) during the last year.”
The sources said, “Directorate was vigorously undertaking anti-encroachment operations on a regular basis throughout Islamabad in order to curb the illegal constructions in the ICT.”
They said the continuous operations were being carried out on a day-to-day basis 24/7 for retrieval of state land from land grabbers and encroachers.
The matter was being dealt with by the Directorate of Municipal Administration working under the administrative control of the Municipal Corporation, Islamabad (MCI), they added.
About the steps taken for the protection of citizens, provision of emergency medical assistance, and water facility on hiking tracks, they said, “The forest guards keep patrolling throughout the day in all the trails and hiking tracks of Margalla Hills, National Park.”
Moreover, they said the forest guards were equipped with wireless sets which were connected to the centralized control room of the Environment Wing, CDA Whenever any medical emergency or any untoward situation arises at any trail or hiking track; these forest guards directly communicate with centralized control room system, where control room further call to rescue teams to attend medical emergency.
“Any type of water pipeline and provision of electricity in Margalla Hills National Park is prohibited to avoid any hazard to wildlife except notified villages,” they added.
