Mushaal Malik deeply concerned over human rights violation in occupied Kashmir

0
ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP):Special Assistant to Prime Minister of Pakistan on Human Rights and Women Empowerment, Mushaal Hussain Malik on Thursday expressed deep concern over the human rights situation in occupied Kashmir and said that India is violating international law as well as international norms by denying Kashmiris their right to self-determination.
“The world powers have a responsibility to play their role in putting pressure on India to resolve the issue of Kashmir for regional peace and stability”, she demanded while talking to a private news channel.
The Kashmir valley has turned into the largest prison in the world, she said, adding, that there were over two dozen UN resolutions that support the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
“Narendra Modi is following the footsteps of Israel to persecute the Muslim population”, she added.
Replying to a question, she replied, that Kashmiris must be given the right to decide their fate like all other nations, adding, that it is the responsibility of the international community to take steps to redeem the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination through the settlement of the Kashmir dispute under the relevant UN resolutions.
She said it is high time that world champions of democracy and human rights take the situation seriously and put pressure on India to resolve the lingering issue of Kashmir.

WHO chief hails world leaders’ ‘historic’ commitment to avert next pandemic

0

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 21 (APP): UN Member States Wednesday pledged to prevent a repeat of the devastating health and socio-economic crises caused by COVID-19 and shore up the world’s ability to head off another pandemic.

Adopting a milestone political declaration at the first-ever summit on pandemic prevention and response, nations also committed to getting back on track to reach the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“[This] is a historic milestone in the urgent drive to make all people of the world safer, and better protected from the devastating impacts of pandemics,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), a Geneva-based UN agency, said in a statement.

“I welcome this commitment by world leaders to provide the political support and direction needed so that WHO, governments, and all involved can protect people’s health and take concrete steps towards investing in local capacities, ensuring equity, and supporting the global emergency health architecture that the world needs.”

Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq was among the world leaders who addressed the summit. In his speech, he urged the international community to ensure better preparedness through legally binding obligations for building resilience against future pandemics.

Wednesday’s declaration was the result of months of intense negotiations to refine and agree on actions at the national, regional, and global levels. It will be submitted to the General Assembly in due course for formal endorsement.

The political declaration asserts the need for Member States to conclude negotiations on a formal agreement on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response, known also as the Pandemic Accord – and make targeted amendments to International Health Regulations – by May next year.

It also calls on States to address the negative physical and mental health impacts of health-related misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, and stigmatization, especially on social media platforms.

Instead, it calls for public information campaigns based on science and the facts.

Member States are also committed to strengthening health workforces and rapid response capacities, surveillance, and local manufacturing abilities, so countries can meet their own needs to prevent, prepare for and respond to pandemics.

Speaking at the summit, UN Secretary-General António Guterres recalled that the global response to COVID-19 showcased both human ingenuity and exposed society’s shortcomings.

While rapid test and vaccine development were notable achievements, there were also a lack of preparedness, disproportionate impacts on the world’s poorest and vaccine hoarding by wealthy nations.

“We must not repeat the mistakes of the past when the next pandemic strikes – as we know it will – and other health threats emerge,” he said.

Reiterating the importance of the declaration, the UN chief urged countries to support the WHO, including increasing their financial contributions.

Kashmir dispute’s settlement ‘indispensable’ for South Asian peace: OIC

0
UNITED NATIONS, Sep 21 (APP):The OIC Contact Group on Kashmir on Wednesday reaffirmed its support to the Kashmiri people’s “just” struggle for their right to self-determination, while emphasizing that a settlement of the Kashmir dispute under UN resolutions was “indispensable” for durable peace in South Asia.
The meeting, in which Foreign ministers and senior officials of Pakistan, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan and Niger took part, was presided over by OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha.
At the outset, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani apprised members of the Contact Group about the grave situation in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K), saying that New Delhi’s continued oppressive measures in the disputed territory had exacerbated the already dire humanitarian conditions for the people.
“The current Indian leadership is bent upon perpetuating India’s occupation of Jammu & Kashmir,” Jilani told the Contact Group which met at a high-level on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly.
“The Indian authorities are brutally crushing the quest of Kashmiri people for their fundamental rights, especially the right to self-determination, as enshrined in the relevant UN and OIC Resolutions.”
A joint communique issued after the meeting called for reversing all illegal and unilateral measures taken on or after 5 August 2019, stop the gross, systematic and widespread human rights abuses in the IIOJK, halt and reverse the illegal demographic changes in the occupied territory, allow unrestricted access to UN Special procedures, international media and independent observers to visit IIOJK, and take concrete and meaningful steps for the full implementation of UNSC resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir.
The communique expressed serious concern over the statements by the Indian political leaders as well as senior military officers about their readiness to attack Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, calling such statements a serious threat to regional peace and stability, and noting that these statements are in violation of the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.
The Communique also:
— Expressed concern over the seizure of the office of the All Parties Hurriyet Conference (APHC) in Srinagar and condemned the ongoing campaign to confiscate the properties of Kashmiri activists;
— Denounced the Indian authorities’ fresh plea seeking death penalty for one of the renowned Kashmiri leaders, Yaseen Malik, who is incarcerated and has already been awarded life imprisonment; and mandated the Special Envoy on Jammu and Kashmir to take appropriate steps to raise voice against the possible award of death penalty to Malik;
— Reiterated the call on the international community to hold India accountable for the egregious human rights violations being committed by the Indian forces in the IIOJK;
— Expressed deep concern over the persistent curbs on the fundamental rights and freedoms, including the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, in IIOJK;
— Rejects the conduct of the G-20 Tourism Working Group Meeting, held in Srinagar on 22-24 May 2023, which aimed to legitimize India’s illegal occupation of the IIOJK and sought to project a facade of normalcy in the occupied territory;
— Appreciated the countries, which decided to dissociate themselves from the G-20 Tourism Working Group Meeting in Srinagar, and,
— Condemned the campaign to seize the properties of Kashmiri activists in an attempt to punish them for their political views.

Caretaker PM for implementation of SDGs commitments

0

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 20 (APP): Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Wednesday stressed upon the international community to implement all the commitments undertaken at the SDGs Summit and in particular at the SDGs Stimulus.

During a high level dialogue on ‘Financing for Development (FFD)’, the prime minister said that given the large financing gap between the developed and the developing countries, they needed to mobilize private investment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Unfortunately, he opined, most private sector investment flowed to the advanced economies and some to mature energy markets and virtually none in the rest of the developing countries.

The prime minister underscored that the UN system should address the reasons for the possibility of the public private investment in the developing countries, including investment projects, high cost of capital, regulatory framework and the SDGs related banking projects.

He also called upon utilization of all the UN offices and agencies to help the developing countries achieve and implement SDGs projects.

He said that the developing countries also required to mobilize the private investment to achieve the SDGs.

PM Kakar stressed upon connecting all the stakeholders on one platform and enabling the developing countries to accelerate their national projects.
