Pakistan fully alive to fast paced challenges: Fatemi

0

ISLAMABAD, June 13 (APP): Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi Monday said that in this age of transformation with fast paced changes at the global level, Pakistan was fully alive to counter them.

In a talk show programme aired by a private TV channel, the Special Assistant said these changes at the global arena were impacting the alliances, attitudes and policies across the world.

He said the government was closely monitoring the changes and adjusting its policies accordingly.

To a query, Fatemi replied that they had fully supported the Ashraf Ghani government in Afghanistan but there were certain core issues which required to be addressed including border management and regulation of masses’ movement on border checkposts.

He said they wanted the world to facilitate the process of repatriation of Afghan refugees living inside Pakistan for decades.

The improvement in border management on part of the Afghanistan would greatly help reduce the problems, he added.

The Special Assistant said that the Quadrilateral Coordination Group was formed to address the Afghan issue.

He maintained that the US drone attack had caused negative
impacts on this initiative.

About relations with India, Fatemi said Pakistan had sincerely initiated peace process with the neighbouring country, but all those moves were not adequately reciprocated. “It is not a one way traffic,” he pointed out.

He said a serving Indian army officer was arrested who was running a terrorist cell in Balochistan.

There should be comprehensive and sustained dialogue over all
core issues, including Kashmir and Siachen, he responded to another
question.

With regard to Pakistan-Iran ties, the Special Assistant said that these had durability and deep strength covering over 60 years.

He said Pakistan’s viewpoint at various world fora had been acknowledged and adopted including its suggestions in the Climate Conference.

About firing incident at Orlando, US, Fatemi opined that it would strengthen the anti-Muslim and anti-Islam lobbies, but termed the US President’s statements in the aftermath of the incident mature.

Afridi hints at a change of franchise for 2nd edition of PSL

0

KARACHI, Jun 13 (APP): All-rounder Shahid Afridi has hinted
at change of franchise for the second edition of the Pakistan Super
League (PSL) to be staged in February 2017.

Shahid Afridi revealed this while taking to cricket.com.au in
an exclusive interview.

“I am a professional cricketer and whichever franchise needs me I
am available for it. It is not that I am confined to Peshawar Zalmi
only,” he remarked.

“No doubt that my current team is Peshawar Zalmi but before moving
forward I need to sort out some things with Javed Afridi (owner and chairman of Peshawar Zalmi).

“The purpose of having franchises was not to just play PSL but to
improve the cricket infrastructure in Pakistan and I give credit to
Zalmi for organizing tournaments and camps in Peshawar and other
places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. But there are some things that need to
be sorted, (there is) no big issue otherwise.”

Shahid Afridi played this year’s tournament with Peshawar Zalmi
and he led Peshawar Zalmi to the top of the regular season ladder,
however his team subsequently lost both of their play-off matches.

the country, with a spell of averaged three months till September.

An official of Met office told APP that the El Ni¤o phenomenon
has weakened and La Ni¤a is favored to develop during the current

Prevailing oceanic and atmospheric conditions are giving
indications of good summer monsoon rainfall in the country. Based on statistical and dynamical downscaling of global circulation models,
outlook for the season is prepared at 80 percent confidence level

Upper KP and Gilgit Baltistan (GB).

Senators for expediting work on CPEC, Gawadar port

0

ISLAMABAD, June 13 (APP): Senators on Monday underlined the
importance to expedite the implementation of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Gawadar Port project for economic growth of the
region and to counter Indian influence there.

Speaking on his motion in this regard, Mian Muhammad Ateeq Shaikh
said the government should complete the Gawadar Port project on
priority basis.

Gawadar was a deep sea port, which would benefit the whole region
economically, he added.

He said the development work on the project should be properly
monitored.

Senator Farhatullhah Babar said Pakistan had no fear of Chah
Bahar agreement. The CPEC project should be launched in letter and
spirit, he added.

The western route of CPEC should be given priority, he said.

He underlined the importance to review the foreign and defence
policies of the country, saying goals and objectives should be set
for good achievements.

He claimed Pakistan was being isolated in the region after
certain incidents taken place recently.

After the assassination of Mullah Mansoor in a drone attack, he
said, a narration should have developed that how the Taliban leader succeeded to get a Pakistani identity card.

Senator Usman Khan Kakar said Pakistan should take measures and
adopt policies keeping in view its national and economic interests.

He said India was investing in Chah Bahar (Iran) and projects of
dams and railway lines in Afghanistan and on the other hand “we
have failed to distribute resources equally among the provinces.”

The foreign and internal policies, he said, should be evolved
by the Parliament to make the same more fruitful.

Mushahid Hussain Syed said the US had downgraded Pakistan in
a bid to counter China in the region. Indian Prime Minister Narindra
Modi had visited several countries to isolate Pakistan, he said.

He said the Parliament should be made stronger so that the foreign
policy could be formulated through this forum.

Muzafar Hussain Shah said a new power game had started in the
region.

China had emerged as a big military and economic power while India
was investing in Chah Bahar Port, he added.

He said Pakistan should start implementation on Iran Pakistan gas
pipeline project to strengthen ties with the neighbouring country.

The United States had opposed the Iran-Pak gas pipeline project
but it did not raise any objection on Chah Bahar agreement, which
was discrimination, he said.

Senator William said the government should take appropriate steps
to counter Indian influence in the region.

Babar Awan said Indian Prime Minster Modi made 26 foreign visits
during last year to strengthen relations witrh countries.

He said Pakistan should complete Gawadar Port project on priority
for its economic growth.

Mir Kabir said the Chah Bahar Port agreement would affect the
Gwadar Port. However, the impact could be averted by taking few
steps, such a railway line should be laid to connect Gawadar and
Narkandi and Sangeen. This would limit the Chah Bahar Port operation,
he added.

Javed Abbasi said the Gawadar Port should not be compared with
Chah Bahar. India could not digest the CPEC, which was a great
achievement of the PML-N government. The CPEC project would benefit
the whole region economically, he added.

Senator Taj Haider said the Gawadar Port was deeper as compared
to the Chah Bahar Port. Economic growth and peace should be the top
priorities of the government to make the country a welfare state,
he added.

Tahir Mashhadi of MQM said Pakistan should not become part of any
regional grouping. The foreign policy should be reviewed, he added.

Sardar Azam Musa Khel said the government should give priority to
the western route of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Saifullah Bangash said Iran was an independent country and “we
cannot raise any objection if she wants to develop her coastal area.”

Pakistan should expedite work on CPEC for economic growth, he
said.

Senator Shahi Syed said India had distributed Rs 700 billion to
sabotage the CPEC. This matter should be probed, he added.

He said the government promised to complete the western route of
CPEC by 2018 but its design had not yet been finalized.

People want peace, development not sit-ins: Dr Tariq

0

ISLAMABAD, June 13 (APP): Minister of State for Capital  Administration and Development Division (CADD) Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry  has said the people wanted peace, job opportunities and development in
the country, and not protests and sit-ins.

He said the nation had rejected the sit-ins held by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf at D-Chowk and would not back its such endeavors any more because protests had damaged the national economy.

Talking to a news channel, the minister said the nation was well
aware about the PTI’s tactics. It’s chief Imran Khan, he said, had been
addressing empty chairs during party’s public meetings.

Dr Tariq Fazal said holding peaceful protest was right of  every citizen, but law would take its course against the violators. The PTI workers had attacked national institutions, including  the Parliament and Pakistan Television (PTV), during the sit-in and the law would take its due course, he added.

Commenting on the performance of PTI’s government in Khyber
Pakhtunkwa, he said the provincial government had failed to deliver
for the welfare of the province.

He said the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) had provided the
PTI a chance to form government in the KP after general election 2013.
But the party had exposed itself by not working for the welfare of the
masses, he added.

Replying to a question, he said the accountability should be carried out against all those whose names were mentioned in Panama  Papers.

Although the name of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was
not mentioned in Panama Papers, yet he presented himself and his
family for accountability, he added.

Pakistan trying to promote trade relations with Iran: Sartaj

0

ISLAMABAD, June 13 (APP): Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs
Sartaj Aziz Monday said Pakistan was trying to promote trade relations
with Iran following the lifting of international sanctions.

Responding to an adjournment motion moved by MQM’s Muhammad
Atteeq Shaikh in the Senate, he said a memorandum of understanding (MoU) had already been inked for declaring Gwadar and Chah Bahar as sister ports. There was a suggestion to establish a railway link between Gwadar and Chah Bahar, he added.

He said the region needed more ports and there would be no threat to Gwadar Port from Chah Bahar Port. Gwadar Port, he said, would be completed soon and it would progress rapidly if China shifted its 10 per cent trade to it.

Sartaj said the deep water port of Gwadar had more importance than
the Iranian Chah Bahar Port. It would progress by leaps and bounds when China would start its trade through it, he added.

As per reports, China is contemplating to shift 17 per cent oil imports to Gwadar.

The Advisor brushed aside the impression that work on the Gwadar
Port was going slow. Sufficient work on the port had been done during
the last one year.

Pakistan open to any mechanism to bring about peace in Afghanistan: Ambassador

ISLAMABAD, Jun 13 (APP): Pakistan has categorically asked the United
States to make its objetives clear if it wants dialogue or war to achieve peace in Afghanistan, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry said on Monday.

At the joint meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence and
Foreign Affairs at Parliament House, the Foreign Secretary said the U.S representatives had been told that U.S drone strike killing Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhter Mansour was a hasty move.

The meeting took up the agendas of withdrawal of proposed subsidy on sale of F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan by the United States and the situation arising out of the May 22 drone strike in Balochistan.

Foreign Secretary Chaudhry said the United States was oblivious of Pakistan’s security concerns, adding that drone strikes were on priority of the government’s agenda.

He said with the United States, “there could be no compromise on certain issues”.

He said the United States had exhausted 16 years in war in Afghanistan and had it be better if even six months for peace were given a chance.
Aizaz Chaudhry mentioned that according to passport details, Mullah Mansour was travelling from Iran and added that the record of Iranian city Taftan was available as well.

However, he said that Pakistan was investigating the veracity of the passport of Mullah Mansour, focusing on the fact that why the document remained unburnt inside the charred car following the drone strike.

The Foreign Secretary pointed that terrorists had their safe hideouts in Afghan refugee camps.

He said Pakistan had hosted the Afghan refugees for 30 years and called upon India and Iran being the “new friends of Afghanistan” to come forward to share this burden.

On halt of subsidized sale of F-16 jets to Pakistan, he said the U.S Congress played a major role in this regard.

He said the foreign policy of Pakistan was in the right direction and was in best national interests.
