Foreign students gain insight into modern IT technology and embrace the 5.5G era

ISLAMABAD, Sep 7 (APP):Esteemed students hailing from universities across the Middle East and Central Asia actively engaged in enlightening discussions centered around the applications of modern IT technology and the integration of 5.5G technology during the roundtable session as part of Huawei’s Seed for the Future Program 2023.
The roundtable, titled “Embracing the 5.5G World: Unleashing Innovative & Sustainable Growth in the MECA Region,” delved into ensuring the secure and extensive deployment of 5.5G technology. Furthermore, the students received valuable guidance on theme selection for the Seed for the Future Program 2023 competition.
Distinguished speakers, including Mr. Ramy Boctor, CTO of Vodafone Qatar, Jawad Abbassi, Head of MENA at GSMA; Eng. Dalal Al Ishaq, Infrastructure and Access Section Head at the Communications Regulatory Authority, and Kamal Zain, CSO at Huawei GN discussed the diverse benefits of 5.5G technology and its applications across various industries, with a particular focus on its relevance in the energy sector and other sectors.
The speakers emphasized that embracing the latest technologies and evolving into the 5.5G era were essential steps to ensure that our infrastructure could cater to the demands of a more immersive experience and unlock the potential for sustainable digital economic growth.
They emphasized 5.5G as a crucial connectivity technology with the capacity to provide substantial benefits in the realms of social, industrial, economic, and sustainability. They underscored the significance of perpetually advancing connectivity infrastructure, embracing cutting-edge technologies within the 5.5G era, and integrating sensing communication. This progression toward the 5.5G era was imperative for meeting the demands of enhanced digital experiences and unlocking the potential for sustainable economic growth.
The speakers emphasized that 5.5G represents a pivotal milestone on our path to an intelligent world. By fostering collective efforts to define and refine industry standards within the 5.5G era, the ICT industry could propel itself swiftly toward achieving this vision of an intelligent world.
Subsequently, students were divided into groups and participated in programs titled ‘Leadership Workshop’ and ‘Tech4Good Kick Off/Select a Theme.’ Guided by moderators Belle, Mehdi, Salam, and Nats, the students selected themes and formed teams to devise innovative technological solutions for social or environmental issues.
Participating students would present their Tech4Good projects to judges, who would account for 80% of the final marks, while moderators would contribute 20%.
Nine ambitious Pakistani students from prestigious institutions, including NED University of Engineering and Technology, Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), the University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Karakoram International University (KIU), COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Institute of Management Sciences (IMSciences), and The National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST), were also in attendance. They, along with their respective teams, actively participated in the sessions towards collectively selecting a theme.
Eight exceptional teams comprising 40 students would advance to the second phase of the Tech4Good program, scheduled to take place in Dubai, UAE, from September 10 to 16, 2023.
The winners of this phase would earn the opportunity to compete in the final global competition in China, where they would face teams from around the world.

FIA Dera intensifies crackdown on hawala-hundi business

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Sep 07 (APP):The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Dera Ismail Khan Region arrested five persons allegedly involved in illegal Hundi-hawala business and recovered millions of rupees during various raids conducted over the last month.
Deputy Director FIA Dera Region Abdul Hai Babar told the media that on the special instructions of Director FIA KP Nisar Ahmed Khan
The crackdown had been intensified against hundi-hawala businesses in the area which incurred losses for national exchequer.
He said that cases had been registered against the arrested accused and added the FIA team on another complaint regarding the hundi-hawala business, raided a hotel and arrested an accused for being involved in the illegal business.
The team recovered Rs 950,000 amount and receipts of hawala-hundi business from the accused.
In other raids, FIA Dera had recovered Rs170000 amount and cases had been registered and recovered the chequebooks of different banks from their possession.
Deputy Director FIA Dera further said that on the complaint of stealing electricity at a commercial level, FIA Dera along with the team of PESCO, removed the illegal connections (Kunda) from guest houses and various bakeries and registered cases and arrested the accused.

Corrective measures: Rupee gains Rs2.03 against US Dollar

ISLAMABAD, Sep 7 (APP): Corrective measures taken by the government have started yielding results as the Pakistani Rupee on Thursday gained Rs2.03 against the US dollar in the interbank trading and closed at Rs304.94 against the previous day’s closing of 306.97.

The buying and selling rates of the dollar in the open market came down to Rs305 and Rs308 from Rs313 and Rs316 respectively, according to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP).

The price of the Euro decreased by Rs 2.81 to close at Rs326.67 against the last day’s closing of Rs329.48, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

The Japanese Yen came down by 02 paisa and stood at Rs2.06, whereas a decrease of Rs5.25 paisa was witnessed in the exchange rate of the British Pound, which traded at Rs380.20 as compared to the last closing of Rs385.45.

The exchange rates of the Emirates Dirham and the Saudi Riyal decreased by 55 and 53 paisa to close at Rs83.02 and Rs81.30 respectively.

To prevent smuggling and hoarding of dollar, the government launched a massive crackdown against the elements involved in dollar smuggling, hoarding and organized crime cartels, causing loss to the national economy.

Strict action is being taken after the identification of facilitators and patrons of government officials indulged in illegal economic activities.

Accordingly, complete lists of the elements involved in illegal economic activities have been prepared; and an extensive crackdown is underway.

Considering the constant devaluation of the rupee against the US dollar, the government initiated and implemented administrative measures against the elements involved causing a dent in the national economy.

In line with its strategy, the government has ordered to take strict action against unauthorized money changers and other mafias operating in the country. “Major policy reforms are underway. Commodity/currency trading will be changed.”

Surveillance systems at land routes, sea and airports are being upgraded after the government decided “Illegal movement of goods and currency will not be allowed.”

International Medical Corps-Pakistan donates Huggy Pro High Performance Tents to PDMA KP

PESHAWAR, Sep 07 (APP): In a benevolent gesture of humanitarian assistance, International Medical Corps-Pakistan (IMCP) has reached out to support the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) by generously donating four Huggy Pro high-performance tents, measuring 48 and 24 square meters in accordance with UNICEF standards.

According to a press statement issued here on Thursday, these tents are equipped with winter liner kits, including ground sheets, shade nets, partitioning kits, and dividers.

These vital resources will be deployed during emergency situations to provide shelter, medical care, and essential supplies to those in need. And can be used as a mobile emergency hospital in emergency situation.
Emergency response holds significant importance in safeguarding the well-being of communities confronting severe winter conditions during disasters.

These specialized tents are designed to provide a safe and warm haven for those affected by natural calamities, ensuring their protection from extreme cold, snow, and inclement weather.

A formal signing ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, graced by the presence of representatives from PDMA, UNOCHA, and IMCP. The occasion marked the official handover of these much-needed supplies to PDMA officials.

Janat Gul Afridi, Director General PDMA, conveyed his deep gratitude for the generous support extended by International Medical Corps-Pakistan. He also appreciated the coordination role of UN OCHA (Ms Shama) in supporting and facilitating this activity.

He emphasized the adaptable nature of these high-performance tents, highlighting their utility in diverse emergency scenarios.

This significant donation underscores IMC’s unwavering commitment to disaster preparedness and relief endeavors. PR spends Rs.1862 M for rehabilitation of track between Kotri-Khanpur

ISLAMABAD, Sep 7 (APP): Pakistan Railways is spending Rs. 1862.84 million for the rehabilitation of 518 kilometers of track between Kotri-Khanpur under the project of Immediate Track Safety Works (ITSW-I).

Despite financial constraints, the management of Pakistan Railways is putting maximum effort into improving infrastructure including tracks, bridges, and stations, an official in the Ministry of Railways told APP.

Under the project of rehabilitation of Karachi Port tracks, 24-kilometre tracks, 17 level crossings, and seven bridges have been rehabilitated, along with the replacement of turnouts.

The official said that Railway Dry Ports at Lahore (Mughalpura), Badami Bagh, and Azakhel have been upgraded.

He said under the Immediate Track Safety Works (ITS W-II & IMTS W-III), the railway track between Tando Adam-Khanpur covering 456 kilometers would be rehabilitated at a cost of Rs. 4830.437 million and Rs.4875.461 million, respectively, by replacing the US components of the track and ensuring the safety of train operation.

A PC-I amounting to Rs.4930.22 million for the rehabilitation of track machinery has been approved, which would ensure the quality of track maintenance work.

Meanwhile, 11 stations have been upgraded, including Peshawar, Hassan Abdal, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Narowal, Nankana Sahib, Raiwind, Okara, Sahiwal, and Bahawalpur, under PSDP projects.

The project of up-gradation of Main Line-I at a cost of $6.683 billion has been negotiated with the Chinese side for completing the ML-1 in two phases consisting of four packages, he added.

The assets of Pakistan Railways are mainly related to the track (11881 kilometers), and rolling stock (15699), and most of these assets have lived their useful life.

Therefore, he said the department has taken several measures for efficient maintenance of these assets, which include an increase in fiscal space for maintenance through the transfer of pensions, reduced utility bills through solarization, improved procurement management through prioritized procurement, and an efficient fuel management system.

He said the department is gradually shifting from a manual to a mechanized track maintenance regime for enhanced productivity and quality, while improved governance of the maintenance system through the introduction of IT-related interventions (ERP) and the provision of professional human resources was also among the top priorities.

Regional Connectivity is an important aspect of the Pakistan Railway development framework. Presently, Pakistan Railway has planned to improve its functional links with regional countries, including India and Iran, he added.

Furthermore, the official said the following new rail links would be established, including the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (UAP) Railway Connectivity Project through Kohat-Kharlachi.

 labourers injured in building collapse

FAISALABAD, Sep 07 (APP):Four labourers were injured due to a building collapse of an under-construction house in the area of Sadar police station.
Rescue-1122 spokesman said here on Thursday that labourers were busy in construction of the upper storey of a house in Model City Satiana Road when the roof of ground floor could not bear the load and caved in.
As a result, four labourers including Zahid Sharif (40), Dilawar Masih (27), Tahir Nazir (22) and Haroon Ghafoor (25) received serious injuries.
The Rescue-1122 personnel shifted them to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital after providing them the first aid and doctors were striving to save their lives, he added.

Constable martyred in terrorist attack on police checkpost in Tank

TANK, Sep 07 (APP): A policeman embraced martyrdom as terrorists attacked Sami Ullah Check post here in the limits of City Police Station last night.

According to a police spokesman, the unknown assailants opened fire at the Sami Ullah Check post late night on Wednesday. As a result, Constable of Levies police Ehsan Ullah son of Akbar Jan Bettani resident of Kalai Umar-Adda embraced martyrdom. The police team, deployed at the checkpost, also retaliated forcefully, however, the terrorists managed to escape from the scene.

As soon as the incident was reported, District Police Officer (DPO) Tank Ifekhar Ali Shah along with SP Investigation Haji Nasir Khan and a heavy contingent of police reached the site. The police surrounded the area and started a search operation in the area.

Later, the funeral prayer of the martyred constable was offered here at the DPO office on Thursday morning. The funeral was attended by DPO Iftekhar Ali Shah, SP Investigation Haji Nasir Khan, DSP Headquarters Abdul Rasheed Khan, DSP Rural Chan Shah, DSP Jandola Circle Syed Marjan Khan, DEO FC Sarmast Khan and other officers and personnel of security forces.

On this occasion, the police officers along with the special contingents of police force presented a salute to the coffin of the martyred cop. The officers also laid wreaths on the coffin.

The coffin was later shifted to Umar-Adda, the hometown of the martyred cop, for burial.

 

PM praises forces for thwarting attack on military posts in Chitral

“Thanks to our alert forces, the terrorist attack on military posts near the Pak-Afghan border in Chitral, was repelled with heavy casualties on the terrorist side,” he said in his social media post on X, formerly twitter.

He also expressed sorrow over the loss of four brave soldiers who embraced Shahadat in the incident.

“Our resolve to eradicate terrorism remains unshaken, and all our citizens stand firm with us,” he added.

PESHAWAR, Sep 07 (APP):The Internal Accountability of Enquiry Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police has sought  record of induction of an alleged Afghan national in provincial police force.
The police department on Thursday said the record of the induction of an alleged Afghan national had been handed over to the Internal Accountability Department for scrutiny.
The inquiry was initiated after induction of an Afghan national namely Abn e Ameen was reported into the KP police force.
The inducted constable was alleged of being an Afghan national and acquiring Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) of Pakistan through illegal means before his induction in KP police.

4kg hashish seized, two arrested including a woman

PESHAWAR, Sep 07 (APP):Gulberg police station, along with ladies police, foiled a drug smuggling operation and arrested two suspects, including a woman here on Thursday.
The arrested woman belonged to Hangu, while the man belonged to Khyber district, police said. The alleged accused were related to an organized drug trafficking network, the police said. The accused were smuggling drugs through a vehicle and were arrested near Swati Phatak, Peshawar Cantt.
The police recovered four kilograms of hashish from the suspects during the operation. The case has been registered against the accused, and further investigations are underway
