Solangi reaffirms govt’s commitment to foster positive relationships with all political parties

0

ISLAMABAD, Sep 11 (APP): Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi on Monday reiterated the caretaker government’s commitment to fostering positive relationships with all political parties.

The minister, in a television interview, stated that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was a duly registered political party and there was restriction on its participation in the electoral process.

He underlined that there was no discord among political stakeholders, as the current situation is notably favorable, with no visible signs of apprehension. The caretaker government’s primary objective was to ensure that the general election results were accepted by all the quarters concerned.

Solangi stressed that the ultimate choice of supporting a certain political party rested with the people. The incumbent government’s focus was on how to hold impartial, fair and transparent elections and the Election Commission of Pakistan’s role in that regard would also be crucial, he added.

The minister said as the elections were being held according to the latest census data then the ECP was constitutionally authorized to fix the polling date.

Regarding the constituency delimitation process, Solangi said the ECP had published the schedule in that regard. Once the delimitation process completed, then the political parties would have 54 days to conduct their election campaigns, he added.

He expressed the caretaker government’s commitment to work closely with the Election Commission for creating a conducive atmosphere for political activities. It was their goal to leave the country in a better state for the next elected government, he added.

The caretaker government would hand over the reigns to the people’s elected representatives and there should be no ambiguity in that regard, he remarked.

Solangi said the caretaker government was operating within the bounds of the law and the Constitution. “The concept of a caretaker setup is enshrined in parliamentary procedures, and its tenure is defined by constitutional regulations and bodies.”

Regarding Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and his political party, the minister said in a democratic framework, the political parties and their leaders had the right to express their opinions freely.

To a question, Solangi said the caretaker law minister’s meeting with the president was the part of his official duties. The last government had made amendments in the Election Act, empowering the caretaker setup to take certain significant decisions such as enforcing international agreements and obligations, he added.

ISLAMABAD, Sep 11 (APP): The 75th death anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of the nation, was solemnly and respectfully commemorated throughout the country on Monday.

Quaid-e-Azam led the Muslim community’s efforts to attain a separate nation, and subsequently, he held the position of Pakistan’s first Governor-General until his passing on September 11, 1948.

Born on December 25, 1876, in Karachi, Quaid-e-Azam received his early education in the city before pursuing higher studies abroad. He led the All-India Muslim League from 1913 until the establishment of Pakistan on August 14, 1947.

The anniversary day commenced with special prayers held in mosques and various places of worship, seeking eternal peace for his departed soul and prosperity and peace for the nation. Prayers and offerings of Quran Khawani and Fateha Khawani took place at the Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi.

Government officials from various sectors paid their respects at the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam in Karachi, laying floral wreaths and offering Fateha.

In commemoration of the day, educational institutions and a range of political, social, and cultural organizations arranged various programs. During these events, speakers provided insights into the character and leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

”Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Muhammad Ali Jinnah did all three,” said the speakers.

Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television broadcast special programmes on this occasion to pay tribute to Quaid-e-Azam for his unmatched services for the freedom of Pakistan.

President Dr. Arif Alvi, in his commemorative message on Quaid-e-Azam’s anniversary, reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to realizing a modern Islamic welfare state aligned with Quaid-e-Azam’s ideals. The focus remains on education and poverty alleviation. On this significant occasion, President Alvi lauded Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s leadership in the creation of Pakistan and his unwavering commitment to peace, equality, the rule of law, economic and social justice, as well as the rights of minorities in the subcontinent.

Sindh Governor Mohammed Kamran Khan Tessori and Interim Sindh Chief Minister Justice (Retd.) Maqbool Baqar marked the 75th death anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah by visiting his mausoleum. They paid their respects by laying a wreath, offering prayers, and leaving comments in the visitors’ book.

Governor Tessori emphasized the importance of Quaid’s principles for the nation’s development, while Interim Chief Minister Justice (Retd.) Maqbool Baqar urged the country to follow Jinnah’s principles for prosperity, considering his services and thoughts as a guiding light for the nation.

UN rights chief slams repression politics, highlights freedom-development link

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 11 (APP): UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk Monday called on countries to reject authoritarianism and protect civic space and fundamental rights in order to advance economic development,

Addressing the opening of the Human Rights Council’s 54th session, Turk strongly condemned the “old, blunt, brutal politics of repression” as exemplified by a rise in military coups and the crushing of dissent – “in short, the fist”.

Following military takeovers in Niger and Gabon, he insisted that the “unconstitutional changes in government” such as the ones seen recently in the Sahel were “not the solution”.

“We need instead an urgent reversal to civilian governance, and open spaces where people can participate, influence, accompany and criticize government actions – or lack of action,” the UN rights chief told the Geneva-based Council, which is composed of 47 members.

Turk said that the challenges faced by countries in the Sahel, which leave their populations “struggling for daily survival”, were interlinked.

The devastating impacts of climate change, lack of investment in essential services and weak governance “are the sources that violent extremism draws from”, he warned.

He also sounded the alarm over mass-produced “lies and disinformation” aided by new technologies and emphasized that “people everywhere want – and have the right to… objective information, not propaganda.”

The UN rights chief underscored that over his years of service with the UN it had become clear to him that development issues “underlie almost every challenge we face”.

“Leaving no-one behind is not an empty slogan. It is a human rights action plan that reaches across the whole spectrum of human rights”, he said.

He deplored the fact that the world was “betraying [its] promise” to end hunger and poverty by 2030.

Some 600 million people are projected to be chronically undernourished at the end of the decade according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) despite the massive financial and technological resources at our disposal, Turk said.

He also stressed that 1.2 billion people, nearly half of them children, now lived in “acute multidimensional poverty” and risked being joined by millions more as a result of climate change, as projected by the World Bank.

“This is a terrible collective human rights failure,” he stated.

The High Commissioner detailed steps to address the “abyss between rich and poor” and the inequalities preventing humanity from achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He spoke about the need for a reform of the international financial architecture offering “fairer deals on debt relief”, urgent funding for developing countries in the form of an SDG Stimulus, a push towards international tax cooperation and a reinvigorated global fight against corruption and illicit financial flows.

Turk also called for “effectively financed human rights-based climate action” to help developing countries adapt to the effects of climate change, to which they contributed so little, and offset the damage done.

He stressed the need for a “rapid, equitable phase-out of fossil fuels” and welcomed the consideration of measures to ensure “accountability for environmental damage”, such as the proposed inclusion of the international crime of “ecocide” in the Rome Statute of the UN-backed International Criminal Court.

In his address the UN rights chief highlighted a wide range of human rights crises around the world. He said that he was shocked by the “nonchalance” and the “politics of indifference” in the face of more than 2,300 people reported dead or missing in the Mediterranean this year, “including the loss of more than 600 lives in a single shipwreck off Greece in June”.

He strongly condemned the fact that many more migrants and refugees were dying “unnoticed” in Europe, in the Bay of Bengal, on the border between the United States and Mexico and beyond.

Turk also spoke about Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the “horrific warfare” which has ravaged the country.

“The Russian Federation’s withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative in July, and attacks on grain facilities in Odesa and elsewhere, have again forced prices sky-high in many developing countries – taking the right to food far out of reach for many people,” he said.

He reiterated his “deep concerns” regarding restrictions on fundamental rights in Russia and “particularly severe oppression” of the anti-war movement and human rights activists, as exemplified by the harsh prison sentences handed down to opponents Alexei Navalny and Vladimir Kara-Murza.

The High Commissioner expressed his “profound shock” at the escalating violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory as well as concern over the “continuing civic space restrictions” by the Palestinian authorities and de facto authorities in Gaza.

He also deplored the “inadequate” accountability for the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran one year on and reiterated his concerns over restriction on the rights of women and girls, as well as the renewed deployment of the morality police.

The “fabrication of artificial disputes over gender” was part of what Turk called “the politics of division and distraction”. In this context he brought up the “repugnant” series of some 30 recent incidents of burning the Quran to “create divisions, both within societies, and between countries”.

He announced that he would discuss this topic in detail on October 6, as mandated by a resolution adopted during an urgent debate at the Council’s previous session.

Monday’s meeting opened with a minute of silence honouring the victims of the devastating earthquake in Morocco on September 8, which has so far claimed at least 2,100 lives.

The Vice-President of the Council, Permanent Representative of the Gambia to the UN in Geneva Muhammadou M.O. Kah, urged solidarity with the victims, stressing to delegations present that they were “not just representatives of nations or organisations” but “part of a global community, humanity”. Morocco’s ambassador Omar Zniber thanked delegates for the gesture and the Geneva-based organisations for their support.

The Human Rights Council’s 54th session will run until October 13 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. During the marathon five-week session, the Council will focus on the human rights situations in Afghanistan, Belarus, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Ukraine among others.
