AIOU’s Academic Council Approves New academic programs

ISLAMABAD, Aug 13 (APP):The 68th meeting of Allama Iqbal Open University’s (AIOU) Academic Council and the 52nd meeting of the Research and Educational Technology Committee/Academic Planning and Development were held jointly under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Nasir Mahmood.
Deans of faculties, departmental heads, principal officers and distinguished external education experts participated in the meeting, said a press release on Wednesday.
The council approved some new academic programs, courses and schemes of studies including BS, MS/MPhil and PhD level offerings. Along with this, necessary amendments to existing programs and reforms in line with HEC policies were also endorsed.
On the occasion, the Vice Chancellor stated that the Academic Council is a highly important and responsible forum of the university, playing crucial role in preparing and approving new programs.
He directed that the legal and policy framework of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) must be taken into account and no substandard program should be presented before the Council.
Director Academic Planning and Course Production, Dr. Zahid Majeed presented the Matric (Science Group) and FSc (Pre-Medical, Pre-Engineering) programs, which were approved by the Council.
During the meeting, It was decided that in the first phase, only the Matric Science Group program will be launched in the Spring 2026 semester while the FSc programs will be introduced later.
Deans of all four faculties and departmental heads gave detailed presentations regarding new programs and the review of existing courses.
The Controller of Examinations briefed the meeting about modern reforms in the examination system, while the Director of the Admissions Department discussed further improvements in the admission system.
The Director General of Regional Services also presented proposals for strengthening regional services.
After detailed deliberations, the Council approved all proposed programs.
These decisions will be formally submitted for endorsement in the upcoming meeting of the Executive Council.

Bahawalpur Press Club organizing Independence Day’s ceremonies

BAHAWALPUR, Aug 13 (APP):Bahawalpur Press Club is going to organise ceremonies at 12am at night between 13th and 14th of August 2025 to celebrate the 78th National Independence Day.
According to an official press release issued here, all preparations had been made at the Bahawalpur Press Club premises to celebrate 78th National Independence Day with zeal and enthusiasm. “The ceremonies regarding Maarka-e-Haq and 78th National Independence Day will start at 12am sharp at night,” it said.
At the ceremonies, music programme, national songs programme, tableau, traditional local dance show, qawwali night and others would be held.
A large number of people including journalists and civil society representatives have been invited to attend ceremonies and programmes.

Moody’s rating boost signals economic progress, says Khurram Shehzad

ISLAMABAD, Aug 13 (APP):Advisor to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad here on Wednesday congratulated the nation on the upgrade of the country’s sovereign credit rating by Moody’s, describing it as a significant milestone that reflects growing international confidence in the government’s economic reform agenda.
Moody’s upgraded Pakistan’s rating to Caa1 with a stable outlook, a move supported by stronger foreign exchange reserves, fiscal consolidation, and a broadened revenue base. This positive development is attributed to the sustained progress achieved through the home-grown reforms agenda under the IMF Extended Fund Facility.
“While challenges remain, this recognition reaffirms that Pakistan is on a clear path toward greater macroeconomic stability and resilience,” Shehzad noted while writing on X.
With Moody’s upgrade, all three leading global rating agencies have now improved Pakistan’s sovereign credit ratings with stable outlooks including S&P: B- with Stable Outlook; Fitch: B- with Stable Outlook; Moody’s: Caa1 with Stable Outlook.
These upgrades have occurred within the shortest possible timeframe, with some ratings reaching levels not seen in around three years.
Khurram Shehzad extended his heartfelt wishes to the entire nation, stating, “On this moment of positive progress, I extend my heartfelt wishes to the entire nation for a very Happy Independence Day!”
This development marks a promising step forward for Pakistan’s economy, signaling renewed confidence from the global financial community.

Islamabad, ILO unveil tougher standards to protect health workers, boost patient care

ISLAMABAD, Aug 13 (APP):Healthcare facilities in the Islamabad Capital Territory will now operate under stricter safety and quality benchmarks after the Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority (IHRA), with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO), launched revised Minimum Service Delivery Standards (MSDS).
Part of the ILO–OECD–WHO “Working for Health” programme, the updated MSDS align with international labour conventions and set out practical steps for hospitals to improve workplace safety, curb harassment—especially against women—retain skilled staff, and enhance patient care.
The standards introduce mandatory risk assessments, stronger infection prevention measures, and protections against workplace violence. Initially implemented in ICT, the framework is set to be replicated in Punjab and potentially nationwide.
At the launch event, Minister of State for Health Dr. Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath vowed government backing to “end unsafe practices” and make Islamabad “a model healthy city.” ILO Pakistan Country Director Geir Tonstol called the reforms “a decisive step in placing safety, dignity, and dialogue at the heart of healthcare.”
IHRA Chairman Dr. Muhammad Riaz Shahbaz Janjua said the authority is moving from a policing role to a partnership approach, while Health Services Academy Vice Chancellor Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan praised the standards as a “vital step” toward unified healthcare quality across all levels.
IHRA will oversee compliance, with the ILO providing technical assistance and training to ensure the new rules take root.

MUZAFFARABAD, Aug 13 (APP): The President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, terming 14 August an important milestone in history, said it was on this day that the world witnessed the emergence of Pakistan as a separate homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent on the world map.

“The establishment of Pakistan was the result of the tireless work and unwavering struggle of its founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah,” the president remarked. Praising Jinnah’s historic role, Barrister Chaudhry said he was the only statesman who not only altered the course of history but also reshaped the entire geography of the subcontinent.

He said, Pakistan has always been an unwavering supporter of the Kashmir cause and the people of Jammu and Kashmir consider Pakistan as their ultimate destination.

He asserted that Pakistan is ideologically and geographically incomplete without Kashmir, noting that the Muslims of Jammu and Kashmir had aligned their fate with Pakistan in 1947, months before its creation. Condemning India’s “nefarious designs” following the 2019 abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, he accused New Delhi of attempting to change the status and demography of occupied Kashmir.

Public crowds MCI stalls as free national flags distributed

ISLAMABAD, Aug 13 (APP): The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) has set up stalls across various city centres which are offering free green crescent flags to citizens, attracting families, youth and children.

According to the MCI, the flag distribution campaign aims to encourage public participation in national celebrations and promote a sense of unity. Staff at the stalls have been guiding visitors and handing out flags throughout the day, with demand increasing as the August 14 celebrations approach.

The MCI has placed these stalls in major markets, parks and public gathering points, ensuring easy access for residents from different parts of the city. Many citizens have been seen taking photographs with flags and sharing them on social media, adding to the festive atmosphere in the capital.

Alongside the flag distribution, cultural activities are planned to enhance the celebrations. From today, cultural dance troupes will perform at designated locations in the city. These performances, organised by MCI in collaboration with cultural organisations, will feature traditional dances representing different provinces of Pakistan. The events are scheduled in the evenings, allowing maximum public attendance.

Officials from MCI said that the dance performances will not only entertain but also showcase Pakistan’s cultural diversity. Salik Hussain highlights unity as core values behind Pakistan’s victories

“When the nation and its army are united, no power in the world can defeat it,” he said while addressing an Independence Day program here Wednesday, paying tribute to the sacrifices of earlier generation in 1947.

He reminded the audience that freedom was a blessing by the sacrifices of our elders and that safeguarding it was the responsibility of every generation.

The minister described the “Battle of Haq” as a new chapter in the story that began in 1947, reaffirming that Pakistan’s survival and dignity rest not only on its borders but on the ideology that binds the nation together.

Praising the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, he said that India’s aggression was repelled not only as a military success but as a triumph of the ideals upon which Pakistan was founded.

“When the enemy challenged our sovereignty, our army gave a befitting response, making it clear we are a peace-loving nation—but not a weak one,” he stated.

Turning to the country’s youth, Chaudhry Salik expressed the confidence in their role as custodians of Pakistan’s future and said that national strength was lying in the education, honesty and patriotism of its younger generation.

“If our youth remain knowledgeable, honest and patriotic, nothing can obstruct Pakistan’s progress,” he said.

The minister called for setting aside political differences for the sake of the country, warning that enemies continuously attempt to sow divisions to weaken national unity.

He urged the nation to reaffirm its commitment to protecting Pakistan’s sovereignty, calling for prayers for the protection and success of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

“May Allah fortify our borders and bind us with the values of unity, sacrifice and justice,” he concluded.

The Minister was warmly welcomed by the Principal of St. Patrick’s High School, Father Mario Rodrigues on arrival at the School.
The ceremony was attended by Secretary School Education Zahid Ali Abbasi, Additional Director Rafia Javed, Secretary of the Catholic Board, teachers from missionary schools, and a large number of students.
Students presented a series of speeches, tableaus, and performances centered around the theme of Independence Day, showcasing their patriotism and enthusiasm.
