New York, Dallas and Florida confirmed as host venues for T20 World Cup 2024

NEW YORK, Sep 21 (APP):Dallas, Florida and New York have been named as venues for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 when the United States hosts the event for the first time, according to American media reports.

The tournament, to be co-hosted by West Indies, will be played on the soil of a country where cricket is not a major sport, but millions of immigrants live in the U.S. from cricket-playing countries.

Cricket enthusiasts welcomed the news that the biggest tournament in history, with 20 teams competing, will be played here.

A 34,000-seat modular stadium will be built at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County, New York, subject to a permit.

Existing venues at Grand Prairie, Dallas, and Broward County in Florida will be increased in size.

The ICC Board awarded the hosting of the event to the West Indies and the USA in November 2021.

“The USA is a strategically important market and these venues give us an excellent opportunity to make a statement in the world’s biggest sport market,” International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Geoff Allardice said.

“We explored a number of potential venue options in the country and we were hugely encouraged by the enthusiasm the event generated in prospective hosts, reinforcing the growing awareness around cricket’s massive fanbase and its power to unite diverse communities.”

Major League Cricket, the inaugural T20 franchise tournament in the United States, was held for the first time in July.

The World Cup will be held in North America for the first time in June 2024 – and the USA, who have not qualified for a major ICC tournament since 2004, and West Indies have been granted automatic qualification as hosts.

The ICC said it would utilize modular stadium infrastructure to develop “a world-class state-of-the-art” purpose-built stadium in New York, with two to three months of work scheduled to commence in late January 2024.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to use modular stadium technology to present world-class cricket in a location that has not previously hosted an ICC global event, giving USA cricket fans the chance to watch the world’s best on their doorstep,” Allardice said.

“This technology has been used at previous ICC events to increase venue capacity and it’s routinely used in other major sports around the world.

“In the USA, it will give us the opportunity to increase the size of the venues in both Dallas and Florida and create what is going to be a stunning venue in New York.”

Trudeau asks India to work with Canada on Sikh leader’s murder

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 22 (APP): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Thursday called on India to collaborate with Canada to ensure a transparent investigation into the killing of a Sikh leader on Canadian soil.

“We call upon the government of India to take this matter seriously and to work with us to shed full transparency and ensure accountability and justice in this matter,” he said in response to questions at a press conference on the sidelines of the 78th session of UN General Assembly (UNGA).

On Monday, Trudeau said on that Canada had “credible” evidence linking Indian government agents to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June, prompting an angry reaction from New Delhi. Nijjar, 45, was a Canadian citizen.

In Islamabad, Pakistan called the incident, which has further strained ties between Canada and India, “a reckless and irresponsible act that calls into question India’s reliability as a credible international partner and its claims for enhanced global responsibilities.”

It shows “that India’s network of extra-territorial killings has now gone global,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mumtaz Zehra Baloch told reporters.

Traditional Canadian allies have so far taken a relatively cautious approach to the matter. Analysts say this is partly because the United States and other major players see India as a counterweight to the growing influence of China.

“There is no question that India is a country of growing importance and a country that we need to continue to work with … and we’re not looking to provoke or cause problems,” Trudeau told reporters. “But we are unequivocal around the importance of the rule of law and unequivocal about the importance of protecting Canadians.”

“That’s why we call upon the government of India to work with us to establish processes to discover and uncover the truth of the matter.”

“We are a country of the rule of law. We are going to continue to do the work necessary to keep Canadians safe and to uphold our values and the international rules-based order. That’s our focus right now,” Trudeau asserted when questioned about potential retaliatory measures following India’s suspension of visa services for Canadians.

Tensions between India and Canada escalated this week after Trudeau’s assertion of a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s killing on June 18 in British Columbia.

Trudeau emphasized the importance of addressing credible allegations, stating, “Of course, there are credible allegations that we need to take extremely seriously as Canadians and indeed as a world.”

Election timeframe busts propaganda against caretaker govt: Solangi

Murtaza Solangi

ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP): Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi on Thursday expressed his contentment over the announcement of the time-frame for the election which busted propaganda against the Caretaker Government.

“It is a matter of pleasure for me that the election time-frame has been announced,” he said during an exclusive interview with Pakistan Television (PTV).

National broadcasters should serve as public service providers, he said, adding the newly appointed MD PTV is highly competent.

He believed that the committed employees of the PTV would bring the national TV at par with modern standards.
Only the PTV had been operating an English News TV channel in the country, he said while underlining the need for initiating public debate over important national issues on TV channels.

He said the PTV should also play its due role in holding free, fair and transparent election by creating awareness among the masses.

The minister said work on holding in-time election was underway and it was essential for all the political parties to work together to create a conducive environment for the election in the country.

The minister ruled out any restriction on media saying “Media cannot overlook journalistic responsibilities.”

He said institutions were functioning freely and anybody could approach the relevant forum if had any complain of discrimination during the election campaign.

The minister said the caretaker government was bound to implement the decisions made by the previous government. The caretaker government was a constitutional one and had a limited mandate.

To a query, he said the caretaker government had not been facing any difficulty in handling international affairs with the global community.

“In the current cabinet, all ministers are experts in their respective fields. We have state institutions at our disposal, as well as a competent cabinet. Our endeavour is to take the country from its current state to a better one,” the minister remarked.

To another query, he said the long association with the field of journalism made it easier for him to perform his responsibilities as information minister.

He said he would decide about the future once his term expired as the minister.

“We will share our experiences with the next elected government,” he said.

Peace, stability – a key prerequisite for economic prosperity of Pakistan, region: PM Kakar

0

NEW YORK, Sep 21 (APP):Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Thursday said that Pakistan desired to have peaceful relations with all countries in the region and beyond as peace and stability in its neighbourhood was an essential prerequisite for economic prosperity and social sector development.

“We do not wish to join any camp politics as Pakistan has successfully maintained good relations with both the US and China in the past, and would continue to do so. Rather than seeing these relationships as a zero-sum game, we believe that both relationships can coexist and flourish simultaneously,” he said while speaking at a session titled “Pak-US Partnership: A Sheet Anchor for Peace, Security & Prosperity”, organized by the think-tank “Council on Foreign Relations”.

He said the world’s security challenges had grown increasingly complex. “We are witnessing shared threats and challenges that transcend borders such as military conflicts, terrorism, climate change, food insecurity, rising number of refugees, growing economic divide between the rich and the poor, and the continuing Covid-19 pandemic. These grave issues continue to affect billions of lives worldwide and undermine global peace and security.”

The shared challenges, he added, provided a new and urgent impetus for Pakistan and the United States to strengthen their partnership in pursuit of mutually agreed and mutually beneficial solutions.

The prime minister said both the countries had prospered whenever they had worked together.

“We share common values and are committed to the same national and international goals,”
he said, adding the bilateral agenda encompassed security cooperation, trade and investment, IT, energy, climate change, agriculture as well as overall connectivity and enhanced people-to-people linkages through greater education and cultural exchanges.

“Our joint efforts such as the Green Alliance Framework will help counter climate change, build resilient infrastructure, improve public health, and combat food insecurity.”

On economic collaboration, PM Kakar said the revival of the Pakistan-U.S. Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) had recently been witnessed after a gap of eight years. The forum had taken momentous decisions for now and future which should pave the way for enhanced investment in Pakistan.

“The United States is our largest export destination. Over the past year, Pakistan’s total exports to the US reached an impressive US$ 8.4 billion. We need to work on US investment in Pakistan,” he added.

As a caretaker prime minister, he said, he was making it a priority to improve Pakistan’s business climate, and attract US capital and expertise.

“More than 80 US enterprises are already operating and thriving in Pakistan, contributing to our mutual prosperity. This constitutes a good infrastructure for investment on which we can build further investment partnership,” he added.

To attract FDI (foreign direct investment), he said, Pakistan had recently set up the Special Investment Facilitation Council to make it an attractive destination for investment and innovation in key areas such as agriculture, mining and minerals, information technology, energy and defence production.

Speaking about the climate change issue, the prime minister said Pakistan still recovered from last year’s devastating climate-driven floods. He said despite contributing less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan was among the countries most affected by the climate change.

Pakistan is working hard to mitigate carbon emissions and transition to renewables. But we and other developing nations cannot shoulder the burden alone, he added.

The prime minister said the resurgence of terrorist threat by dangerous entities such as TTP and ISIS-K was a matter of grave concern for Pakistan and the entire international community.

He said a stable Afghanistan continued to remain an important foreign policy priority for Pakistan and the United States.

“We welcome the U.S. direct engagement with the Afghan government, and on our part, would continue to push them to honor their commitments to women rights, girls’ education and ensuring that Afghan soil is not used for terrorist attacks against other countries.”

He said Pakistan remained desirous of peaceful relations with India but it also required reciprocal sincerity by the Indian government. “The measures taken by India in 2019 in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir have pushed our region into a dangerous and dark alley.”

He said the rising wave of Hindutva-inspired anti-Muslim extremism in India should be a matter of deep concern for the entire international community including the U.S.

He urged the U.S. Administration to persuade the Indian government that without amicably resolving the Kashmir dispute, as per the wishes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the peoples of South Asia could not be freed from perennial instability.

He believed that a strong Pakistan-U.S. relationship could be a force for stability and progress in South Asia and beyond.

“Pakistan today stands ready to work with the United States and all partners who share our vision of a peaceful, prosperous world where cooperation triumphs over conflict.”

Replying to a question about holding general elections in Pakistan, the prime minister said the mandate of the caretaker government was to facilitate the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold free, fair and transparent elections.

However, he said there was a constitutional requirement of delimitation of different constituencies after the new population census in the country which he said would required around three months to complete. So the general elections, he said would probably be held by end of January 2024.

Responding to another query with respect to the terrorism threats in the region, PM Kakar said due to the terrorism attacks from across the border, “my soldiers and other people are being targeted and killed on daily basis”.

He said although the imminent threat was for Pakistan but for mid term, the threat could spread in the entire region.

He said the Hindutwa ideology of the Indian BJP government was being expanded beyond India and the region as recently it killed a Canadian citizen in Canada.

Replying to a question with respect to Pakistan’s relations with China, the prime minister said Pakistan enjoyed strategic relationship with China.

“Pakistan and China have a lot in common in terms of the emerging threats within region, there are commonality of certain issues, and we share the common goals with which we will stand shoulder to shoulder with each other.”

He recalled that in 2013 when the world was calling Pakistan a failed state, China moved forward and put a sizable investment under China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in Pakistan.

It helped Pakistan in reviving its deteriorating economy. He informed that under the CPEC the first phase had already been realized whie the second phase was under progress.
