PM lauds Punjab police for thwarting terrorist attack

ISLAMABAD, Feb 01 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday lauded the bravery of the Punjab Police for thwarting the terrorist attack on Makarwal police station in Mianwali.

He announced reward and certificates of appreciation to the police personnel for their valour and paid tribute to them.

The prime minister said the role of police was significant in fighting terrorism and crime.

He said the nation and institutions were unanimous in fighting terrorism and extremism.

The entire nation is proud of the role and contribution of Punjab Police and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in the fight against terrorism, he said.

Shehbaz Sharif vowed to equip the Punjab Police and the CTD with modern weaponry.

Maryam Nawaz to start nationwide party organizational tours from today: Marriyum

ISLAMABAD, Feb 01 (APP):Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Wednesday that Senior Vice President and Chief Organizer of Pakistan Muslim League (N) Maryam Nawaz will start nationwide party organizational tours from today.

Maryam Nawaz, in her first leg of the tours, will visit Bahawalpur Division today where in a party’s organizational meeting new induction of local officials would be made, the minister said in a statement.

The meeting, she said, to be chaired by Maryam Nawaz will also review party’s current organizational structure to further strengthen it at local level.

PML-N Punjab President Rana Sanaullah Khan will also accompany her, she said.

IRSA releases 65,300 cusecs water

ISLAMABAD, Feb 01 (APP): Indus River System Authority (IRSA) on Wednesday released 65,300 cusecs water from various rim stations with inflow of 65,100 cusecs.

According to the data released by IRSA, water level in River Indus at Tarbela Dam was 1493.29 feet and was 95.29 feet higher than its dead level of 1,398 feet. Water inflow and outflow in the dam was recorded as 17,200 cusecs while outflow as 25,000 cusecs.

The water level in River Jhelum at Mangla Dam was 1130.20 feet, which was 80.20 feet higher than its dead level of 1,050 feet. The inflow and outflow of water was recorded 11,600 cusecs and 4,000 cusecs respectively.

The release of water at Kalabagh, Taunsa , Guddu and Sukkur was recorded 29,200, 40,200, 27,400 and 9,600 cusecs respectively.

Similarly, from River Kabul, a total of 10,600 cusecs of water released at Nowshera and 18,900 cusecs released from River Chenab at Marala.

Marriyum lauds Punjab Police for foiling terrorist attack in Makarwal

ISLAMABAD, Feb 01 (APP):Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Wednesday paid tribute to Punjab Police for foiling a terrorist attack on Makarwal police station in Mianwali district.

The passion and performance of Punjab Police and CTD to eliminate terrorists was highly commendable, she said in a statement.

She said that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the then Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif made the Punjab Police and Counter Terrorism Department ( CTD) an effective force with modern weapons and training to eradicate terrorism.

Strengthening the police and CTD with modern weapons, technology, and training was the need of the hour to eradicate terrorism, the minister remarked.

She said that the nation was proud of its forces, and it saluted the spirit of officers and security personnel in the war against terrorism.

Bodies of 51 students, teachers recovered, five alive from tanda dam

PESHAWAR, Feb 01 (APP):So far, dead bodies of 55 students and teachers were recovered and five students were rescued alive from Tanda dam in Kohat district.

According to ISPR, the rescue and relief operation of Pakistan Army is underway at Tanda Dam.

Pakistan Army troops along with Rescue 1122 and civil administration, working constantly day and night for 72 hours, rescued 5 students alive from Tanda Dam while Pakistan Army engineers and divers of SSG recovered 51 deceased students and teachers from Tanda Dam.

The five rescued students have been shifted to Distt Hospital Kohat. Search for one missing individual is underway.

UN urges ‘greater efforts’ to defeat armed group like TTP following Peshawar terrorist attack

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 01 (APP):With the death toll from the deadly suicide attack on a mosque in Peshawar’s Police Lines reaching 100 mark, the United Nations Tuesday voiced concern over the stability of the region, and called for stepping up efforts to stamp out armed groups like Tehrik-i-Taliban in Pakistan (TTP), which claimed responsibility for the bombing.

“It’s clear that this (the terrorist attack in Pakistan) touches on a number of different concerns we have,” Farhan Aziz Haq, deputy spokesperson of the United Nations, said in response to a question about the tragic incident at the regular noon briefing at UN Headquarters in New York.

“One is the stability of the region with different armed groups like Tehrik-i-Taliban in Pakistan, … having allegedly been behind this particular attack, and we want greater efforts to make sure that those groups are defeated,” he said,

“Beyond that, of course, the UN has called again repeatedly for the protection of holy sites around the world, Farhan Haq said, adding, “it’s horrific to think that people peacefully going to worship are being targeted like this.”

The UN spokesperson spokesperson made those remarks a day after the UN Security Council issued a press statement that condemned “in the strongest terms” the Peshawar suicide attack and called for bring those responsible for the bombing to justice.

“The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice,” the statement said.

India supporting terrorists operating from Afghan borders: Asif

ISLAMABAD, Feb 1 (APP):Minister for Defense Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Tuesday said that India is providing training to terrorists operating from Afghan borders.

Disgruntled Tehreek e Taliban groups have been found operating from Afghan bordering areas, he said while talking to a private television channel.

Some TTP groups have reunited from Afghan territory and made attacks on police check posts, he added. We are suffering from weak policies of Imran’s regime, he said. The minister said that Pakistan is passing through difficult economic stages due to tough agreements made with IMF by PTI leaders.

Khawaja Asif said that wave of terrorism had surfaced because Imran Khan could not formulate a clear-cut policy for handling security matters.

In reply to a question about TTP groups training, he said with extended support from India, TTP groups pose a threat to peace. We had fought war on terrorism successfully and restored peace in troubled areas, he said adding that the government would take all possible measures to revive economy and control terrorism.

Pakistan Pavilion wins “Best New Exhibitor” award at New York Travel & Adventure Show

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31 (APP): Pakistan pavilion has won the “Best New Exhibitor Award” at New York Travel & Adventure Show 2023 for displaying the country’s tourism and culture in a remarkable way.

CEO of New York Travel & Adventure Show presented the award to Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) Managing Director Aftab ur Rehman Rana, said a news release on Tuesday.

The two-day event was held at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center New York on January 28-29.

Speaking on the occasion, PTDC MD Aftab ur Rehman Rana stated that the participation of Pakistan in the Travel and Adventure Show was highly impactful in terms of response from the public and engagement of all the team members throughout the show.

Both the PTDC MD and Advisor to Prime Minister on Tourism & Sports Awn Chaudhry congratulated all the members of Pakistan’s delegation including the provincial tourism departments and private sector tour operators for their dedication and commitment.

FBR achieves revenue target of Rs. 533 billion for month of January

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31 (APP): The Federal Board of Revenue has achieved monthly budgetary target of Rs.533 billion and surpassed it by Rs. 4 billion in month of January 2023.

The FBR has shown excellent performance by surpassing the budgetary target for the month of January 2023, said a press release issued here on Tuesday.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has demonstrated a commendable revenue collection performance during January 2023 and has not only achieved the monthly budgetary target of Rs. 533 billion but surpassed it by Rs. 4 billion.

According to provisional figures, FBR has collected Rs. 537 billion in the month of January 2023 thereby showing an impressive growth of 23% compared to the same month last year.

Cumulatively, FBR has collected Rs. 3,965 billion in the first seven months of the current financial year against Rs. 3,367 billion collected in the corresponding period of last year depicting a growth of 18%.

The third quarter of the current year started with an impressive performance and the team FBR is committed to meet the annual budgetary target of Rs. 7,470 billion for the current financial year despite economic challenges.

Direct taxes collection has grown at a robust pace, which has shown growth of 48 % during the first seven months of the current financial year which is reflective of the government’s policy of shifting the tax burden to wealthy and affluent segments of society.

It is also highlighted that the administrative and enforcement measures of the FBR have yielded results which are reflected in the growth of direct taxes in special and domestic taxes at large.

The growth in domestic taxes is 40% during the same period. The contribution of domestic taxes has also increased from 50% last year to 59% during the current year. Furthermore, it is also significant that the collection from Customs Duty has shown an increase of 16% during the month of January 2023 as compared to the same month last year.

Additionally, FBR has not stopped short of taking care of exporters’ liquidity problems and has issued refunds of Rs. 208 billion during the first seven months of the current financial year as against Rs. 183 billion during corresponding period of last year which is 14 % more than the previous year’s issued refunds.

FBR appreciates all those taxpayers whose due contributions helped in the achievement of the budgetary target and also lauds the endeavors of all field formations and its officers for their untiring efforts and commitment to optimize revenue collection in challenging economic situations.

This growth in tax revenues, especially direct taxes, underscores the resolve of the government and FBR to make Pakistan a prosperous nation to withstand financial shocks and bridge the fiscal deficit.
