Senate condemns renowned lawyer Afridi’s murder in PHC premises

ISLAMABAD, Jan 16 (APP): The Senate on Monday strongly condemned the killing of prominent lawyer and ex-MNA Abdul Latif Afridi in the High Court Bar Room of Peshawar High Court (PHC), directing the provincial authorities to update the Upper House of the Parliament about the inquiry report of the incident daily.

As the House proceedings started, Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar drew the attention of the chair and lawmakers towards the murder of Abdul Latif Afridi, who also served the lawyers community as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

The minister paid tribute to the deceased for his meritorious services for the welfare of the poor segments of the society, the struggle for rule of law and constitution, besides the promotion of democratic norms in the country and protection of human rights.

Tarar also recalled his active role in succeeding the lawyers’ movement for an independent and vibrant judiciary. He requested Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani to direct the authorities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to complete the inquiry into the incident without showing any negligence.

He questioned the credibility of law enforcement departments as to how a person managed to carry a weapon in the bar room that was used in the murder of Abdul Latif Afridi.

He said the law and order situation was deteriorating in the provinces day by day and termed it as ‘alarming.’

Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani observed that the House would write to the provincial authorities concerned, seeking a daily report from the Inspector General of Peshawar Police into the gruesome killing of the prominent lawyer.

Earlier, Senator Mushtaq Ahmed led Fateha for the late Abdul Latif Afridi and martyrs of law enforcement agencies who sacrificed their lives in maintaining law and order and safeguarding the country’s frontiers.

Fort Munro to be developed as tourists destination: DG KDA

MUZAFFARGARH, Jan 16 (APP): Director General Koh-e-Suleman Development Authority Babar Bashir said that all possible efforts were being made to facilitate tourists at Fort Munro and provide them best tourist places like Murree.

During his visit to different areas of Fort Munro on Monday, the DG Koh-e-Suleman Development Authority said that the projects of 30-kilometer roads were being completed with funds of Rs 250 million. He said that the officers concerned have been directed to complete all ongoing development projects at the earliest.

He said that the road projects were being completed for easy access of tourists visiting Demis Lake, Anari Top, Kalma Chowk, Khar Bazaar and Fort Munro Top. He said that the Koh-e-Suleman Development Authority was striving hard to provide Murree-like facilities to tourists at Fort Munro.

He said that after completion of all ongoing development projects, Fort Munro would be one the best tourist place.

KP CM condemns Latif Afridi’s murder

PESHAWAR, Jan 16 (APP): Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mahmood Khan has condemned the murder of senior lawyer Abdul Latif Afridi and termed the incident sorrowful.

In a statement issued here on Monday, he expressed his profound grief and sorrow over the incident and prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family for bearing the loss with fortitude.

20-K Cup 2023: MT Club, Shahkamal, Ludhiana register victories

LAHORE, Jan 16 (APP):Model Town Club, Shahkamal Club and Ludhiana Club registered victories in the 20-K Cup 2023 T20 Cricket Tournament matches played here at different venues on Monday.

Model Town Club outwitted City Gymkhana by 88 runs in the 23rd match of the tournament here at the Moden Town Club Ground. Model Town Club, batting first, scored 168 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

Arslan Bajwa played a superb knock of 45 runs of 30 balls while his teammates Irfan Rasheed (26), Danyal Ahmed (24) and Umaid Asif (12) also contributed significant runs in their team’s total. For City Gymkhana, Saad Athar bowled brilliantly and grabbed 3-29, Usama Tariq 2-18 and Jahangir Mirza 1-40.

City Gymkhana’s run-chase was badly hampered by outstanding bowling by Irfan Rasheed (3-22), Umaid Asif (3-15) and Hassan Rizwan (2-27) as they were bundled out for 80 runs in 17 overs. Hussain Ali scored 13 and Usama Tariq 12. For his all-round performance, Irfan Rasheed was declared player of the match.

Shah Kamal Cricket Club defeated Model Town Whites by 32 runs in 22nd match here at the Ittefaq Cricket Ground. Shahkamal Club, batting first, posted 188-8 in the allotted 20 overs.

M Abdullah played sensational knock of 82 runs off 44 balls while Imran Nazir Jr cracked 33 and Hamza Ahmed 23 runs. Shamas Khan bowled well for MT Whites by claiming 4-28.

Model Town Whites replied well but they couldn’t finish well, thus losing the match by 32 runs as they could score 156-10 in 19.1 overs.

M Nouman and Aon Shahzad batted well and scored 43 and 40 runs respectively. Outstanding bowling by Faheem Faisal (3-24) and M Arslan (3-19) made things easy for Shahkamal Club and helped them score an easy victory. M Abdullah was name man of the match.

Ludhiana Club toppled Valencia Gymkhana Cricket Club by 7 wickets in the 24th match of the tournament here at Model Town Greens Ground. Valencia Gymkhana, batting first, could score 132-6 in 20 overs. Former Test cricketer Azhar Ali played an impressive unbeaten knock of 77 while Hassan Hameed struck 33 runs. For Ludhiana Club, Saeed Ullah, Imran Ali and M Junaid bagged 2 wickets each.

Ludhiana Club were off to a flying start and comfortably chased the target, losing just 3 wickets in 16.2 overs.

Fahad Munir hammered convincing unbeaten 71 while Ahmer Ashfaq scored unbeaten 25 and M Waqas 24. For Valencia Gymkhana, Ismael, Hassan and Ibtisam got one wicket apiece.

Fahad Munir was adjudged as player of the match.

On Tuesday (January 17), four matches will be contested.

Prince Club will take on Township Whites at Cricket Center Club, Model Town Greens will play against Golden Star Club at Model Town Greens ground, Apollo Club will compete against Ali Garh Club at Ali Garh ground and Model Town Whites will vie against Shinning Club at Model Town Club.

Killer of Latif Afridi arrested, old enmity behind murder of senior lawyer: SSP Operations

PESHAWAR, Jan 16 (APP): SSP Operations, Kashif Alam Abbasi here Monday said the accused, who fired at senior lawyer Abdul Latif Afridi inside the bar room of Peshawar High Court (PHC) has been arrested red-handed and identified as Adnan Sami Afridi’s advocate.

Briefly talking to the media, the SSP said the weapon used in the murder of senior lawyer Latif Afridi was recovered from the possession of the accused, who was shifted for interrogation.

Senior lawyer and former President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Abdul Latif Afridi was shot- dead inside the bar room of Peshawar High Court this morning. Afridi was shifted in critical condition to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar after receiving multiple bullets where he lost his battle for life.

Kashif Abbassi claimed that Latif Afridi was killed over an old enmity.

He further claimed the accused Sami Afridi advocate was the nephew of the deceased judge of Anti Terrorism Court Swat Aftab Afridi, who was brutally killed by unknown gunmen along with three members of his family near Swabi Motorway Interchange in April 2021.

The SSP said Latif Afridi Advocate was also nominated in the FIR of the deceased judge.

He said the investigation was underway from different angles including security lapses and strict action would be taken in case of any shortcoming of security on the premises of PHC. SSP said a pistol used by the accused in the attack was recovered.

Latif Afridi was a constitutional and legal expert and served as President of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association and Supreme Court Bar Associations. He also remained a member of the national assembly.

The lawyer’s community protested against the brutal killing of their senior colleague and boycotted court proceedings.

They demanded unmasking the real culprits behind the killing of Latif Afridi and strict punishment of the accused under the law.

Killing of Latif Afridi inside bar room manifests ‘serious law & order situation’ in KP: Marriyum

ISLAMABAD, Jan 16 (APP): Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Monday strongly condemned the killing of ex-president of the Supreme Court Bar Association Abdul Latif Afridi inside a bar room of the court in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“(The commission of ) such a brutal act inside the bar room of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the manifestation of serious law and order situation in the province,” the minister said in a news statement.

She prayed to the Almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss with fortitude.

“Abdul Latif Afridi was not only a strong voice of the oppressed, but also a truthful person,” Marriyum said while paying homage to his struggle for democracy, constitution and law.

Japanese government extends loan for Punjab Transmission Grid Stations Project

ISLAMABAD, Jan 16 (APP): The Japanese Government has extended the project loan effective period upto 31 December 2024 of the ongoing loan project “Punjab Transmission and Grid Stations Project (Phase I)”.

The loan agreement was signed on 3rd May 2008 under which Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided a project-based loan of Japanese Yen 11.943 billion (approx. US$ 119.1 million).

In this regard, the letter of amendment of the loan agreement has been signed between JICA Headquarters, Tokyo, Japan, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Government of Pakistan. Additionally, JICA also accepted the utilization of the remaining project loan amount for flood response, said a press release issued here by the Japanese Embassy in Islamabad on Monday.

The extension of the loan utilization period will enable National Transmission and Dispatch Co Ltd (NTDC) to utilize the remaining balance for the procurement of necessary materials as replenishment of essential materials in NTDC Warehouses which were urgency utilized for repair and maintenance of national transmission lines affected in the devastated flood 2022 across Pakistan.

The main objectives of this project were to improve the reliability and quality of power supply through the reduction of outages and voltage fluctuation and to meet the fast-growing load demand by strengthening transmission systems in Punjab province.

Through JICA support, NTDC has built one 500 kV grid station in Rahim Yar Khan, a 500/220 kV grid station at Faisalabad West along with an associated transmission line, and a 220kV GIS grid station at Shalamar, Lahore along with associated transmission lines. The newly constructed 500/220 kV grid station at Faisalabad West along with the associated transmission line will be expected to be operationalized soon.

Furthermore, the sub-stations and transmission lines constructed under JICA supported project contributed to mitigating the capacity ratio of neighboring substations and transmission system.
