WB terms reports on delaying loans for Pakistan as “unfounded”

ISLAMABAD, Jan 19 (APP):The World Bank on Thursday termed the media reports on delaying approval of loans for Pakistan as unfounded and baseless saying that it was not delaying approval of any loan for the country.

“The press reports that refer to a World Bank decision to delay approval of potential Bank operations in Pakistan are unfounded”, Country Director of the World Bank for Pakistan Najy Benhassine said on his official twitter handle.

Earlier, the media reports had claimed that the Washington-based lender had delayed the approval of two loans for Pakistan worth $1.1 billion until the next fiscal year pending some steps on the country’s energy debt and tariffs.

However, Behassine made it clear that all the approval dates for approval of loans were already scheduled.

“The tentative Board approval dates of all of our proposed operations, as well as their amounts, are indicative, and the World Bank decides on the timing for sharing project proposals for Board consideration following due process and based on the proposed projects’ readiness”, the WB Country Director added.

US wants to see Pakistan in ‘economically sustainable’ position: State Dept.

0

WASHINGTON, Jan 19 (APP): The United States wants to see Pakistan in an economically sustainable position, State Department spokesperson Ned Price has said, noting that Islamabad was in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other global financial institutions.

Asked about Pakistan’s dwindling foreign exchange reserves, he told reporters at his daily press briefing, “This is a challenge that we are attuned to.”

“I know that Pakistan has been working with the IMF, with international financial institutions. We want to see Pakistan in an economically sustainable position,” Price added.

“Those conversations, as I understand it, are ongoing. We are supportive where we can be of our Pakistani partners, but ultimately these are conversations between Pakistan and international financial institutions,” he said.

Pressed on the U.S. response to Pakistan’s financial challenges, Price said, “These conversations with our Pakistani partners often do entail technical issues. Oftentimes these are addressed between the Department of the Treasury and our Pakistani partners.

“But Pakistan’s macroeconomic stability is a topic of conversation between the Department of State and our counterparts, the White House, the Treasury Department, among others.”

Pakistan urges UNSC to act ‘swiftly, resolutely’ to end Israel’s rights abuses in Palestine’s occupied lands

0

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 19 (APP):Pakistan Wednesday called on the Security Council to act “swiftly and resolutely” to bring a halt to a host of Israel’s human rights violation in the occupied Palestinian territory and continuous provocations at the sacred Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, and ensure its compliance with International aw, and implement the resolutions on the Middle East conflict.

Speaking in the 15-member Council’s debate on the situation in the Middle East, Ambassador Munir Akram said that the two-State formula, envisaging establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, offers the only solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

“The rising extremism in Israeli leadership must not be allowed to foreclose this solution,” the Pakistani envoy said, referring to the new Israeli extreme right-wing government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“There is no question in anybody’s mind that Israel’s actions in the occupied Palestinian lands – the seizure of land and properties for Israeli settlements; the violence against unarmed Palestinian children, women and men; the blockade of Gaza; and the desecration of Holy Al-Aqsa – are of all grave violations of Security Council resolutions and international law, including humanitarian law,” Ambassador Akram added.

The Security Council meeting took place in the wake of a strong statement signed by more than 90 countries, including Pakistan, expressing “deep concern” at Israel’s punitive measures against the Palestinian people, leadership and civil society following a UN General Assembly’s resolution calling on the world court to give an opinion on the legal consequences of the Israeli illegal occupation of Palestinian territories. The signatories called for a reversal of the Israeli measures, saying regardless of their position on the 193-member Assembly’s landmark resolution, “we reject punitive measures in response to a request for an advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).”

In his remarks, the Pakistani envoy said they look forward to the advisory opinion of the international court of justice on the legal implications of Israeli occupations.

“We expect that the Court’s opinion will lead to Israeli accountability for its crimes in the occupied Palestine territories,” he said.

Noting that the year 2022 was among the deadliest for the Palestinian people, Ambassador Akram expressed alarm over Israel’s ongoing acts of aggression, incitement and provocation against Islamic and Christian holy places, including Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif.

Pakistan, he said, strongly condemns the provocative visit of Israeli Minister of National Security to the Holy Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

“Al-Aqsa is a holy site revered by Muslims around the world,” he said, adding, “For fourteen centuries Muslims have been loving guardians of the Holy Al-Aqsa and violation of its sanctity offends the religious sensitivities of Muslims all over the world and inflames an already tense situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and could have grave impact on regional and international peace and security.”

“Pakistan rejects all Israeli measures and attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo of the Holy Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif and demands full respect of the status quo and of international law at Al-Aqsa and at all other holy sites in the Occupied Palestinian Territory…

“The perpetuation of Israeli occupation will not bring peace to the Holy Land. Even if they are dispossessed and disempowered by Israel, every succeeding generation of Palestinians will persist in seeking their freedom and fundamental rights, including their right to self-determination,” the Pakistani envoy added.
