Islamabad Police install 50 more cameras to enhance vigilance

ISLAMABAD, Feb 6 (APP): Islamabad police have installed about 50 more CCTV cameras in different places of the city to enhance vigilance and also connect the cameras of the commercial areas with the safe city project.

A police source said the department has installed more cameras after an assessment of the monitoring and security system in the city.

He said that work is underway to install security cameras in all markets and commercial areas with the safe city project to ensure better monitoring of the business areas. The installation of new cameras would increase the coverage of key locations and help to improve the law and order situation in the city, he added.

He lauded the efforts of the business community for installing cameras in the market with their resources.

He said that this step would help to improve the security around markets and curb the incidents of thefts, mobile snatching, and other crimes in business areas and the city.

To improve the further security of the Capital, the source said that all the security guards and driver of police are being trained to combat violence and tackle any untoward situation. All these steps, he said, are aimed to put in place a fool-proof security system in the city.

NA speaker regrets earthquake losses in Türkiye, Syria

ISLAMABAD, Feb 06 (APP): National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Deputy Speaker Zahid Akron Durrani on Monday expressed deep regret over the disastrous consequences of the earthquake that hit Syria and Türkiye last night, causing significant loss of human life and property damages.

In a statement, the speaker and deputy speaker expressed their deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and hoped that those injured and affected by this disaster will enjoy a speedy recovery.

At this difficult time for both Syria and Türkiye, the speaker, deputy Speaker, and Parliament wish to convey their profound solidarity with all those affected, and with the people and authorities of Türkiye and Syria.

The speaker and deputy speaker assured to provide all possible cooperation from Pakistan in relief and rehabilitation activities, besides praying for the elevation of the ranks of the quake victims.

Local mobile phone production units manufacture 7.24 mln smartphones from Jan-Sept 2022

ISLAMABAD, Feb 6 (APP): Local mobile phone production units established in the country have manufactured about 7.24 million smartphones and created 26,000 jobs from January to September 2022.

According to an annual report of the PTA, its wider impact on the economy has manifested in the shape of a newly established mobile ecosystem, the emergence of the local handset manufacturing industry, job creation, investments by global mobile manufacturers, increased government revenues, and 100% registration of handsets across all cellular networks of Pakistan.

Commercial imports of 1.24 million have been taken over by local manufacturing, which stands at 16.70 million.

PTA issued the MDM Regulations 2021, which enable companies to obtain MDM authorization for 10 years.

As many as 30 authorizations have been issued so far. The list includes international brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, Nokia, Oppo, Vivo, Techno, and Infinix, and local brands like VGO Tel and E-Tachi, among others.

Today, 30 local plants in Pakistan are manufacturing features and smartphones, not just for local market consumption but export purposes also.

For the first time in Pakistan’s history, the import volume of CBU phones in 2021 registered a decline as most of the local demand was catered to locally manufactured products.

Fiscal deficit contained at 1.4%, primary balance improves

ISLAMABAD, Feb 6 (APP):The fiscal deficit during the first five months (July-November) of the current fiscal year has been contained at the same level of 1.4 percent of GDP as it was recorded in the comparable period last year, finance ministry said in a report.

According to the monthly Economic Update and Outlook for January 2023, the primary balance improved during July-November (FY2023) and posted a surplus of Rs 511 billion (0.6 percent of GDP) against the deficit of Rs 36 billion (-0.1 percent of GDP) last year.

“The first five months of CFY have ended with some developments; containing fiscal deficit and surplus in primary balance due to effective fiscal management,” it says.

According to the report, the private sector credit observed developments in the month of December 2022 as it increased by Rs 458 billion compared Rs 413.6 billion in December 2021, emanated more credit demand both from working capital and fixed investment.

During 1st July to December 30, FY2023 money supply (M2) showed growth of 2.0 percent (Rs. 562.8 billion) compared to growth of 4.3 percent (Rs. 1047.3 billion) in last year.

The current account deficit shrank to $ 400 million in December 2022 as against $ 1857 million in the same period last year, largely reflecting an improvement in the trade balance.

Current Account posted a deficit of $ 3.7 billion for Jul-Dec FY2023 as against a deficit of $ 9.1 billion last year, mainly due to a contraction in imports.

The report termed fiscal consolidation as the key to saving official reserves and exchange rate stability of the country. It says, the fiscal consolidation may temporarily be costly in terms of growth prospects in the short term. However, long-run prosperity and growth could only be achieved by augmenting the country’s long-term equilibrium growth path by expanding production capacities and productivity.

The report says, Pakistan was currently confronted with the challenges like high inflation, low growth, and low levels of official foreign exchange reserves.

PM’s convened APC rescheduled on February 9: Marriyum

ISLAMABAD, Feb 06 (APP):Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Monday that All Parties Conference (APC) convened by the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the issue of terrorism was rescheduled and now it would be held
here on Thursday, February 9, instead of Feb 7.

In a tweet, she said all the national and political leadership of the country has been invited in the Conference.

Marriyum said the national leadership would formulate a joint strategy to combat terrorism and other challenges being
faced by the country.

The minister said National Action Plan would also be reviewed in the APC.

Marriyum grieved over loss of precious lives in Turkiye, Syria quake

ISLAMABAD, Feb 06 (APP):Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Monday expressed her deep grief and sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction caused by the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria.

In a statement, the minister expressed her heartfelt condolences over the loss of precious lives and damages to the properties in the devastating earthquake.

The minister said that the severity of the destruction of natural disaster was demanding a collective attention of the world.

“We are with the people of the affected countries in this time of suffering”, she said.

Marriyum prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the deceased in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved families to bear this loss with fortitude.

She also prayed for the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries in the earthquake.

Sherry Rehman expresses sorrow over loss of lives in Turkiye, Syria earthquake

ISLAMABAD, Feb 6 (APP):Federal Minister for Climate Change, Senator Sherry Rehman on Monday expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and property due to severe earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria.

In a statement issued here, the federal minister expressed her condolences and solidarity with the government and people of Turkiye and Syria.

The Senator said she was deeply saddened to hear about the deaths and other losses due to the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria.

The Minister also prayed for the safe recovery of under the debris and those injured in the earthquake.

ANF recovers huge quantity of drugs, arrests four drug peddlers

ISLAMABAD, Feb 6 (APP):The Anti-Narcotic Force (ANF) in crackdowns against smugglers of contraband items countrywide, arrested four drug peddlers and recovered a huge quantity of drugs from their possession.

A spokesperson of the ANF said that in a joint operation of ANF and ASF at Islamabad International Airport, the force seized about 796 grams of heroin from an accused who was going to Bahrain from flight number PK 181. The drug was hidden in a laptop.

In another operation, the force recovered over 11 kg of ice from carpets booked for New Zealand and Hong Kang through a private courier office located in Islamabad F-11 Markaz.

At Bacha Khan International Airport Peshawar, the force seized 4 hashish-filled capsules from the stomach of a suspect who was travelling to Sharjah from Flight No. PA 612. (2)

Near Sheikhupura Interchange, the ANF recovered over 16 kg of hashish from a car and arrested one person.
At Multan Airport, the force seized 91 capsules filled with heroin from the stomach of an accused who was going to Saudi Arabia.

Petroleum sector gets Rs640.19 mln to advance 9 projects in 1st half of 2022-23

ISLAMABAD, Feb 06 (APP):The government has released funds amounting to Rs 640.19 million to advance nine ongoing petroleum-related projects during a six month period of the current fiscal year under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP 2022-23) against a total allocation of Rs1.48 billion.

Out of the total disbursement of Rs640.19 million, around Rs24.24 million have been spent on petroleum projects to accelerate oil and gas exploration activities during first half of the year 2022-23 (July-December), according to official data available with APP.

As per the PSDP document, the incumbent government had earmarked Rs150.560 million for the establishment of the National Mineral Data Centre (NMDC) Directorate General of Minerals, Rs303.700 million for expansion and up-gradation of Pakistan Petroleum Corehouse (PETCORE) for its sustainable operations to facilitate oil and gas exploration research in Pakistan (HDIP), Rs100 million for Geological Mapping on 50 Toposheets, out of 354 unmapped Toposheets of Outcrop Area of Balochistan Province, Rs70 million for Legal Consultancy Services for drafting of Model Mineral Agreement and updating of Regulatory Framework (Federal and Provincial Minerals/Coal Departments) and Rs 200 million for Pakistan National Research Programme on Geological Hazards (Earthquakes and Landslides) – Data Acquisition along Active Faults and Identification of Potential Landslides Hotspot Zones.

Similarly, the government specified Rs 224.809 million for strengthening and up-gradation of Karachi Laboratories Complex (KLC) at HDIP Operations Office, Karachi, Rs100 million to supply 10 MMCFD gas/RLNG at the doorstep (zero point) of Bostan Special Economic Zone, Balochistan (SSGCL), Rs 74.705 million to supply 13 MMCFD gas/RLNG at the doorstep (zero point) of Bin Qasim Industrial Park Special Economic Zone, Sindh (SSGCL) and Rs256.735 million to supply 40 MMCFD gas/RLNG at the doorstep (zero point) of Allama Iqbal Industrial City Special Economic Zone, Faisalabad (SNGPL).
