Industries minister calls on prime minister

ISLAMABAD, Mar 30 (APP): Minister for Industries and Production Makhdoom Murtaza Mahmood on Thursday called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif here.

In the meeting, the minister briefed the prime minister about the measures being taken for industrial growth in the country, a PM Office statement said.

IWMI organizes workshop to sensitize media on water governance in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Mar 30 (APP): Speakers at a media workshop highlighted the importance of water measurement for effective water governance and how the improved water resource management can help to ensure availability of water for different sectors, especially agriculture and industry.

The workshop was organized by International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Pakistan with the objective of effective reporting on water governance, said a press release issued here on Thursday. The workshop aimed to sensitize print, electronic and digital media journalists on water governance in Pakistan.

Dr Mohsin Hafeez, Country Representative Pakistan, IWMI, and team leader of the WRAP Programme Component 1: CRS-IWaG said that IWMI Pakistan was working on various water-related reforms through the UK Aid-funded programme, such as water accounting and water resources assessment, Data as a Service (DaaS), water allocation systems, groundwater management information system and irrigation demand management, among others.
These reforms will improve water governance in the Indus Basin to support the implementation of national policies on water and climate change, as well as promote sustainable use of water in Punjab to support the implementation of Punjab Water Act 2019, he added.

Engr. Hafiz Qaisar Yasin, Director (Headquarters), On Farm Water Management (OFWM) informed the participants on the need to improve water governance for better agricultural productivity. He emphasized on various policies on water governance and highlighted the need for good governance at the farm level. He also emphasized on undertaking water budgeting and accounting at the farm level to strengthen water governance and promote Irrigation Demand Management (IDM)/Nature-Based Solutions.

Experts from IWMI Pakistan, including Dr Abdur Rehman Cheema, Regional Researcher Water Governance and Institutional Specialist; Dr Umar Waqas Liaqat, Researcher Irrigation; Dr Muhammad Arshad, Researcher Integrated Water Resources Management Specialist; and Kanwal Waqar, Researcher, Gender and Youth Specialist briefed the participants on water governance reforms being piloted through the WRAP Programme Component 1: CRS-IWaG.

Engr. Dr Jehanzeb Masud Cheema, Researcher Water Resources Management, IWMI Pakistan summarized the key takeaways and informed the participants that efficient water management was key to ensuring water security.

To achieve this objective, we need to rightly measure our water resources, which will contribute towards informed decision-making, he said and added that this media workshop would enable journalists to better report on water governance issues and advocate for the sustainable use of water resources among various stakeholders and the public.

Moreover, the IWMI Pakistan will arrange future capacity building workshops and media exposure visits in the next financial year of the WRAP Programme Component 1.

Senate’s HBAC approves provisional parliamentary calendar for 2023-24

ISLAMABAD, Mar 30 (APP): The House Business Advisory Committee (HBAC) of the Senate has approved the Provisional Parliamentary Calendar for the Parliamentary Year 2023-24.

The Committee which met at the Parliament House here Thursday with Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani in the Chair, discussed legislative business to be transacted during the 327th Session of the Senate.
Besides legislative business, the session would take up discussion on the current situation of important national and international issues.

The HBAC decided that the current session would continue till April 10, 2023.

The meeting was attended by Leader of the Opposition Senator Shahzad Waseem, Senators Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, Manzoor Ahmed, Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari, Muhammad Tahir Bizenjo, Sardar Muhammad Shafeeq Tareen, Mushtaq Ahmad, Hidayatullah Khan, Dilawar Khan and Azam Nazeer Tarar. Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Shahadat Awan Minister of State for Law and Justice and Secretary Senate Mohammad Qasim Samad Khan were also present on the occasion.

Rana urges judiciary to constitute full-court bench to hear plea of political parties in elections case

ISLAMABAD, Mar 30 (APP): Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah Khan on Thursday strongly condemned the terrorist incident in Lakki Marwat and expressed grief and sorrow over it.

He expressed deep sorrow and grief over the martyrdom of four police personnel including DSP Iqbal Mohmand in the terrorist attack.

He said the police force is active in war against terrorism and the entire nation pays homage to the martyrs.

The minister said that Pakistan defeated terrorism and would destroy all such elements with strength and power.

He prayed Almighty Allah to raise the ranks of martyred DSP and policemen and grant courage to their family members and heirs.

The Interior Minister also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured persons.

KSRelief completes another NFIs project in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Mar 30 (APP):King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) has completed the distribution of the third and fourth phases of Non-Food Items (NFIs) kits consisting of 15,000 among flood-affected people living in Punjab and Sindh.

As a result, the total number of kits distributed has gone up to 50,000, and 350,000 Individuals benefited from these NFIs packages, said a Saudi Embassy’s statement on Thursday.

According to the details, each NFIs kit comprises of two blankets, a shelter kit with a plastic mat, a kitchen set with Jerry can, and antibacterial soaps.

All these relief packages were distributed in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority with the help of registered non-government organizations (implementing partners) and local government.

This project comes under the umbrella of humanitarian projects by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by KSRelief to assist deserving families living in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD, Mar 30 (APP):Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday hailed the passage of Supreme Court (Practice & Procedure) Bill 2023 by the Parliament, expressing confidence that it would institutionally strengthen the apex court.

“It will help make the process of bench formation and exercise of Article 184 (3) transparent and inclusive, thus serving the cause of justice,” he said in a tweet.

Earlier in the day, the Senate passed the Bill aimed at restructuring the suo motu powers of the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
