LESCO detects 278 power pilferers on 99th day of anti-theft campaign

LAHORE, Dec 17 (APP):The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has detected a total of 278 connections from where the customers were pilfering electricity in all its circles of five districts (Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur and Okara) on the 99th day of grand anti-power theft campaign.
The LESCO spokesman told media here Sunday that the company has also submitted FIR applications against 278 electricity thieves, out of which 144 FIRs have been registered in respective police stations, while 13 accused have been arrested.
Grand anti-power theft operations against electricity thieves are being conducted on the directives of the Federal Power Division and the LESCO Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Engineer Shahid Haider is supervising these operations. The LESCO chief vowed that the operations would continue without discrimination until the complete end of electricity theft. The electricity pilferers as well as the LESCO officers and employees who facilitate them are also being brought to justice.
On the 99th consecutive day of the anti-power theft campaign, the spokesman added, large commercial consumers were also found involved in electricity theft and all of them were also disconnected. Among the seized connections were 05 commercial, 03 agricultural, 01 commercial and 270 domestic. All the power pilferers were charged with a total of 291,345 units as detection bill amounting to Rs 9.538 million.
Apprising the media about some major power pilferers, he explained that LESCO charged detection units worth Rs 300,000 to an electricity pilferer in Badami Bagh area of Lahore; Rs 120,000 to another customer stealing electricity in Saddar area of Shahdara Town; Rs 120,000 to a power thief in Factory Area; and Rs 110,000 detection bill to a power thief in Ferozwala area.
During the 99 days of grand anti-theft campaign, the spokesman mentioned, the LESCO detected pilferage on 36,087 power connections and submitted 36,367 FIR applications against electricity thieves in the relevant police stations out of which 35,976 FIRs have been registered, while 16,005 accused have so far been arrested by the police. The LESCO has so far charged a total of 57,497,837 detection units worth Rs 2,241,588,768 to all the power pilferers.

LCCI welcomes increase in FDI, emphasizes more efforts

LAHORE, Dec 17 (APP):The Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) Sunday welcomed rise in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and called for more aggressive efforts to maintain the good momentum.
LCCI President Kashif Anwar, Senior Vice President Zafar Mahmood Chaudhry and Vice President Adnan Khalid Butt said in a media statement here that rise in Foreign Direct Investment is an encouraging sign for the economy.
They said that the net Foreign Direct Investment in the first four months of the current financial year (July-October 2023-24) stood at USD 524.7 million, exhibiting an increase of 7 percent as compared to USD 488.9 million in the same period of FY 2022-23. There is a need for concrete efforts to enhance the level of FDI in the country.
The LCCI office-bearers said that Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) can play an instrumental role in materializing the signed agreements with UAE and Saudi Arabia for bringing investment in diverse sectors of the economy. Going forward, stability in macro-economic policies, and focus on competitive business regulatory environment, particularly related to taxation and cost of doing business can play a pivotal role in enhancing foreign direct investment in the country.
The LCCI office-bearers said that Pakistan has the potential to attract FDI worth billions of dollars in various sectors of economy like energy, agriculture, tourism, health, mines and minerals, precious stones, information technology and various others.
LCCI President Kashif Anwar suggested that the government should persuade the investors for taking over the those state-owned enterprises which are not performing well and turned these into profitable. At the one hand, it would reduce the burden from national exchequer while give revenue and generate employment opportunities at the other.
The LCCI office-bearers suggested that Pakistan’s foreign missions abroad would have to play a key role to attract foreign investors. Foreign investors should be informed that Pakistan has lucrative opportunities for investment in various sectors of economy.
They said that the countries, which have signed Bilateral Investment Agreements with Pakistan, have meager share in total foreign direct investment in Pakistan. They said that the government has to target these countries for marketing the investment potential of Pakistan.
They said that there are almost same countries which are investing in Pakistan since long. They said that the new countries must be targeted to attract FDI in Pakistan.

Dengue on the wane in Punjab

LAHORE, Dec 17 (APP):The number of dengue cases is decreasing in Punjab as only 18 new cases were reported in on Sunday.
The latest Health Department data reveals a total of 15,047 confirmed dengue cases across 36 districts in Punjab this year.
However, the battle against the fever persists with Lahore leading the unfortunate tally at 6,948 cases, followed by Rawalpindi with 2,654, Gujranwala with 1,584, Multan with 1,444 and Faisalabad with 912 cases. Lahore, with an additional 10 cases, continues to grapple with the fever, Gujranwala with 2, Multan with 1 and Faisalabad with 9 new cases. Meanwhile, Sheikhupura, Okara and Narowal each reported 1 case each of dengue within 24 hours.
Currently, 32 patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals across Punjab, with 16 of them in Lahore district hospitals. Punjab Health Secretary Ali Jaan Khan urged people to maintain clean and dry surroundings as a preventive measure against dengue. He also called for cooperation with health department teams that are working tirelessly to combat it.

Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa declares anti-corruption “Jihad” in Abbottabad

ABBOTTABAD, Dec 17 (APP):Caretaker Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Justice (R) Syed Arshad Hussain Sunday has called for a collective effort to combat corruption, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for negligence in duty across all institutions. He expressed these views while talking to various delegations at KP House Abbottabad.
The Caretaker CM said that Abbottabad has been officially declared a sister city with Azerbaijan, marking the commencement of various developmental projects. The government is determined to ensure transparent and fair elections in Abbottabad, prioritizing the resolution of local issues.
Following meetings with various delegations. Delegations from Azerbaijan, along with key officials such as Health Minister Dr Riaz Khan and Mineral and Planning Minister Dr Sarfraz Ali Shah, were present at the occasion.
During the discussions, the Chief Minister acknowledged the existing issues in the district, particularly concerning water, electricity, and cleanliness. The Commissioner informed about devised solutions for these problems.
Chief Minister Arshad Hussain outlined a comprehensive strategy to tackle unemployment, aiming to train half a million youth within a year. Task forces have been formed in various institutions, offering courses ranging from four months to four years. The goal is to provide employment opportunities, both domestically and internationally, based on demand.
Additionally, Chief Minister Arshad Hussain announced the Quantum Valley declaration for Haripur and Abbottabad, ensuring that youth will no longer face employment issues. The empowerment of the youth is highlighted through plans such as conferring university status to medical colleges, training doctors and physiotherapists, establishing nursing directorates, and constructing nursing institutes.
He emphasized the importance of resolving issues related to mosques and employees under the Auqaf Department. District Khateeb Mufti Abdul Wajid highlighted these concerns, and their resolution has been assured by the government. Overall, the government’s commitment to combating corruption and addressing local issues reflects a proactive approach towards the development of Abbottabad.

CM urges NGOs to work in healthcare as needs of city grow at fast pace

KARACHI, Dec 17 (APP):The Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice (Retd), Maqbool Baqar, has said that the healthcare needs of Karachi are growing at a very fast pace, and the addition of hospitals by non-government organizations will help ease the burden of patients in government hospitals.
This he said while speaking at a gathering organized to raise funds for the University Medical Complex being established in Karachi. Those who spoke on the occasion include Sohail Mahdi, Dr Dilbar A. Saeed, and others.
Baqar said that the establishment of a university medical complex marked a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing healthcare and ensuring the well-being of the people of this city. “The healthcare needs of our metropolis are growing at a very fast pace, and the addition of this hospital will help to ease the burden of patients on the existing hospitals,” he said.

Voters eye on political parties’ manifestos for generation of employment, education opportunities

PESHAWAR, Dec 17 (APP): In democratic setups all over the world including Pakistan, manifestos play a significant role in deciding the fate of political and religious parties during general election and take the countries forward on path of prosperity.

Prior to general election, political leaders announce their parties manifestos for information of millions of electorates about their future programs and priorities for well being of masses and resolution of the country’s problems if voted to power.

Despite announcement of the election schedule by Election Commission of Pakistan, most of political and religious parties have yet to announce its manifestos.

“The people of KP eagerly awaited of the political parties’ manifestos for solution of their problems such as unemployment, poverty, price hike and illiteracy,” said Professor Dr H.R.Hilali, former Chairman Political Science Department, University of Peshawar while talking to APP.

“Except PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who has recently announced key points of his party’s election manifesto including construction of three million houses for poor, launching of welfare cards for labourers, patients and farmers besides increasing BISP assistance during various public addresses in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the other political parties have yet to announced salient features of manifestos and long delay in this regard may counterproductive for it to attract voters during election campaigns,” he said.

He said that thousands of graduate voters wanted dignfied jobs and any political party have a solid program for employment creation would take an edge over others on February 8, 2024.

Dr Hilali said that unfortunately, unemployment has increased in last few decades in the country due to lackluster approach of the past governments.

He claimed that unemployment rate in Pakistan was 6.42 percent in 2022, a 0.08 percent increase from 2021 while in 2020 it was 6.55 percent, showing a 1.72 percent increase from 2019 besides 4.83 percent in 2018, a 0.75 percent increase from 2018.

He said over 21 million voters were added to the electoral rolls since 2018 elections in Pakistan where the number of women voters had swelled from 46.73 million in last polls to 58.47 million in 2023 due to population explosion that put extra burden on all resources besides increasing unemployment and illiteracy.

He said the number of male voters had jumped from 59.22 million in 2018 to 68.50 million till July 25, 2023. ECP statistics further revealed that approximately 127 million registered voters would exercise their right of franchise in the upcoming general election out of whom about 72.31 million (56.9pc) were registered in Punjab, 26.65 million in Sindh (21pc), 21.69 million voters (17.1pc) in KP while 5.28 million ( 4.2pc) in Balochistan.

In Pakistan, the total registered voters in 2018 was 106 million including 59.22 million male and 46.73 million female voters, showing a 12.49 million deference between both sexes while in July this year its number jumped to a record 127 million.

This significant difference of 12.49 million were further increased to an all time high of 12.72 million when 62.55 million men and 49.83 million women were found eligible to cast vote next year.

The ECP statistics has disclosed that there were around 57.1 million youth aged between 18 and 35, making up 45pc of those, who are eligible to vote.

The number of voters aged 36 to 45 years comes to 27.79 million ie 21.88pc and the two age groups if seen together comprise 84.81 million voters or two-third of the total 127 million voters in Pakistan.

Dr Hilali said that young voters, especially females representing nearly 50 percent of the population , would be a key factor in deciding fate of political parties on February 8 election.

He said that about 22 million children aged 5-16 years were still out-of-schools (OSC) in the country including 4.7 million in KP due to poverty and socioeconomic imbalances and bringing them under education net would be a big challenge for future political government.

Senior PMN leader, Wajid Ali Khan said that eradication of price hike, promoting industrialization for jobs creations for youth and improving economy would our priority areas if voted to power.

He claimed that a political party that came into power with tall claims of providing 10 million jobs and construct 5 million houses for poor before 2018 election were failed to honour its manfestio.

Young voters Umar Khayam, Ehtisham Qaiser and Zeeshan Khan who eagerly await to poll their first vote in February 8, 2024 General Election, said that political parties with solution of problems of unemployment, illiteracy and inflation would get a clear edge over others.

They expressed the hope that political parties would soon announce manifesto with workable programs for education of voters.

The experts urged political parties and people to get unite for election to take democracy to the safe shores.
