UAP announces winter vacations till Dec 31

PESHAWAR, Dec 20 (APP):University of Agriculture Peshawar has announced winter vacation with immediate effect till December 31 at its main campus, sub-campus, subsequent schools and colleges.
A notification issued here said that Deans, chairperson, TTS faculty, principal and directors of institutes, campus and colleges would remain present at offices during the vacation, adding that the scheduled examinations at undergraduate level for students of 3rd, 5th and 7th semesters and 9th semester in case of DVM would resume from January 03.

Police find 4.8m traffic violators in 2023

LAHORE, Dec 20 (APP):Lahore Traffic Police found 4.8 million people violators of traffic rules and 2.2 million motorists
were issued tickets for not keeping helmets during current year 2023 in the provincial capital.
According to Lahore Traffic Police’s statistics for 2023, a total of 2.264 million motorcyclists
were issued tickets for not wearing helmets while 52 were fined for driving without
license.
City Traffic Officer, Ammara Athar, stated that 2,023,000 vehicles were penalized for violations
such as lane cutting, stop-line infringement, and zebra crossing violations. Additionally, 1,200,000
violators were caught for improper parking.
During the current year, Lahore residents committed 85,000 instances of one-way violations,
leading to enforcement actions against 63,000 vehicles disrupting traffic flow.
Ammara Athar highlighted that 39,000 vehicles faced consequences for disregarding red signals,
31,000 for not wearing seat belts, 48,000 for mobile phone use while driving, 49,000 for dangerous
driving, 4,000 for tinted windows, and 136,000 for other violations.
The CTO Lahore emphasized that the purpose of these actions was not just to generate revenue
but to instill discipline in the citizens and ensure effective implementation of traffic laws.
The focus is on enhancing urban behavior rather than merely collecting fines.

SCCI President participates in meeting of board of administrators

SIALKOT, Dec 20 (APP): Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) President Abdul Ghafoor Malik participated in the 84th meeting of the board of administrators of the Export Development Fund (EDF) chaired by Federal Minister for Commerce, Industries and Production Dr Gohar Ejaz.
According to the SCCI, the meeting reviewed and deliberated on various submissions
focused on the promotion of exports.
During the proceedings, funds for the Sialkot Tannery Zone (STZ) project were approved,
signifying a significant advancement. Additionally, the inclusion of the sports and leather sectors in the Engineering and Healthcare Show 2024 received unanimous approval, marking a pivotal development for these industries.
Further enhancing Abdul Ghafoor Malik’s involvement, he was appointed to the Audit Committee and a Dedicated Committee to oversee affairs of the Sialkot Tannery Zone (STZ) while Ejaz Khokhar was made the member of HR Committee and Tannery Zone Committee.

Elections 2024: nomination papers acquiring, submitting process starts

ISLAMABAD, Dec 20 (APP): The acquisition and submission of nomination papers for candidates intending to participate in the National and Provincial Assembly seats in the upcoming 2024 general elections commenced on Wednesday and will persist until Friday (December 22).
According to the schedule issued by the Election Commission, candidates interested in contesting elections can obtain and submit their nomination papers from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm until December 22.
The initial list of candidates is set to be released on December 23, with the scrutiny of nomination papers scheduled to take place from December 24 to December 30. Electoral symbols will be assigned to candidates on January 13, and the general elections are scheduled to held on February 8.
The cost for acquiring the nomination papers is set at Rs. 100. Each candidate is allowed to submit a maximum of five nomination papers, each with different endorsers.
For those contesting a National Assembly seat, the non-refundable fee is Rs. 30,000. Meanwhile, candidates vying for a Provincial Assembly seat are required to pay a non-refundable fee of Rs. 20,000.
Candidates must attach their income tax return documents from the past three years along with their nomination papers. The fundamental eligibility criteria for candidates include being a citizen of Pakistan and being at least 25 years old.
As per the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), individuals contesting National Assembly seats must be registered voters in any location within Pakistan.
To vie for a seat in the provincial assembly, the candidate is required to be a voter of the respective province. The nomination papers must include an attested copy of the identity card and vote certificate of both the candidate recommender and endorser.
Additionally, a copy of the passport on behalf of the candidate should be attached to the nomination papers. The nomination fee is to be deposited by the candidate directly to the Returning Officer (RO) or through a Bank Draft.
Failure to comply with Articles 62 and 63 will result in the disqualification of a candidate. Additionally, the proposer for general seats must be a voter from the relevant constituency.
For women and non-Muslim seats in the National and Provincial Assembly, both the proposers and seconders must be voters of the respective province. However, nominators and supporters of candidates for non-Muslim seats in the Assembly can be voters from any part of Pakistan.

The day serves as a reminder to governments and the international community to uphold commitments to eradicate poverty, hunger, and diseases.
On December 22, 2005, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recognized solidarity as a fundamental and universal value in twenty-first-century relations between peoples. This led to the proclamation of December 20 as International Human Solidarity Day, focusing on people, the planet, and human rights.
In a bid to reinforce global commitment, the General Assembly established the World Solidarity Fund on December 20, 2002.
Operational in February 2003 as a trust fund under the United Nations Development Programme, its primary objective is to combat poverty and illness while fostering human and social development in developing countries.
As nations come together on this day, pledges are made to adopt strategies that promote the overall well-being of the global community, echoing the shared responsibility to tackle pressing issues on a united front.
International Human Solidarity Day stands as a testament to the ongoing efforts to create a more equitable and interconnected world.

Police register 135 cases against underage drivers

RAWALPINDI, Dec 20 (APP): Rawalpindi District Police have registered 135 cases against underage drivers during the last 24 hours, said a police spokesman here on Wednesday.
Total 3882 FIRs were registered under the campaign launched against underage drivers while 135 cases were registered during the last 24 hours.
All possible steps were being taken to improve the traffic situation on the city roads and facilitate the citizens, he added.
He informed that police on the directives of City Police Officer, Rawalpindi were taking action in accordance with the law against underage drivers.
The CPO had directed the relevant officers to take solid steps to control traffic rules violations and underage driving.
He urged the parents to keep a vigilant eye on their children to avert road accidents.
Police were also conducting awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to educate the students about the legal age requirements for obtaining a driving license, he added.

Pakistan’s regional exports increase 16.29% in 5 months

ISLAMABAD, Dec 20 (APP): Pakistan’s exports to the seven regional countries witnessed an increase of 16.29 per cent in the first five months of the financial year (2023-24) as compared to the corresponding months of last year.

The country’s exports to the regional countries including Afghanistan, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and the Maldives account for a small amount of $1855.996 million, which is 14.83 per cent of Pakistan’s overall exports of $12510.845 million during July-November (2023-24), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported.

China tops the list of countries in terms of Pakistan’s exports to its neighbouring, leaving behind other countries such as Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Pakistan carried out its border trade with the farther neighbour Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Maldives.

Pakistan’s exports to China witnessed an increase of 39.44 per cent to $1223.532 million in five months of this year from $877.444 million last year while exports to Afghanistan also surged to $232.697 million from $213.282 million.

The country’s exports to Bangladesh however decreased by 31.91 percent to $248.457 million this year from $364.930 whereas exports to Sri Lanka rose by 7.61 percent to $145.970 million from $135.643.

The exports to India decreased to $0.069 million from $0.112 million in the previous year.

Exports to Nepal increased by 15.48 per cent to $1.439 million from 1.246 million while to Maldives increased by 15.10 per cent to $3.832 million from 3.329 million, it added.

On the other hand, the imports from seven regional countries were recorded at $4884.440 million during the period under review as compared to $5195.286 million during last year, showing a decline of 5.98 per cent.

The imports from China during July-November 2023-24 were recorded at $4741.099 million against the $5045.390 million during July-November 2022-23, showing a decrease of 6.03 per cent during the period.

Among other countries, imports from India are worth $88.906 million against the imports of $77.757 million, an increase of 14.33 per cent while imports from Afghanistan decreased by 72.34 percent from $11.523 million to $3.187 million.

Meanwhile, imports from Sri Lanka increase to $24.965 million from $24.962 million whereas Pakistan imports from Bangladesh recorded $ 26.085 million from $35.622 million during last year.

The imports from Nepal into the country witnessed a decrease of 82.11 per cent from $0.302 million to $0.054 million, it added.

FIA arrests Ex-CEO of Drug Regulatory Authority on Fake PHD Degree

ISLAMABAD, Dec 20 (APP): Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Wednesday arrested former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Drugs Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) Sheikh Akhtar Hussain for holding a fake degree of Ph.D.
FIA Islamabad had registered an FIR against Sheikh Akhtar for deceiving authorities by faking his death twice to escape a fake degree case against him, however Afzal Niazi, deputy director FIA Anti-Corruption Circle, upon conclusion of his investigations arrested him.
A joint enquiry team was constituted by Rana Jabar, additional director general North FIA, to conduct enquiries on more than 100 different applications against various officials of the DRAP.
Afzal Niazi constituted 12 teams to arrest Hussain and several raids were conducted on the house, offices, and factories to arrest Hussain but all efforts failed in the past.
FIA had placed his name on the Stop List to leave Pakistan and also moved an application in court to block his CNIC for his unconditional surrender.
Hussain was accused of Mega corruption and accumulation of wealth of more than Rs100 billion along with fake death claims to save himself from arrest in two NAB cases No.40/2001 and 16/2004.
Other charges included abuse of official powers, fake degree, Getting PhD allowance on fake degree since 2001 from taxpayers’ money, drawing salaries after the termination from government service since 17 March 2021.
He was drawing Leave Encashment Allowance of LPR more than Rs2.5 million after termination from government service.
He was also accused of increasing the prices of medicines, Promoting officials without DPC and management courses and embezzlement in the official record of the DRAP.

Police arrest two bike lifters with eight stolen motorcycles

RAWALPINDI, Dec 20 (APP): Police have arrested two bike lifters and recovered eight stolen motorcycles from their possession, said a Police spokesman here on Wednesday.
He informed that a team under the supervision of SHO, New Town Police Station managed to net two bike lifters namely Amir and Adeel and recovered eight stolen motorcycles and other items from their possession.
A case has been registered against the accused while further investigation was underway.
Superintendent of Police, Rawal Faisal Saleem said the accomplices and facilitators of the accused would also be sent behind bars.
He said that on the directives of City Police Officer (CPO), Rawalpindi, the operation against the bike and car lifters had been accelerated.

Section 144 imposed in Khyber

PESHAWAR, Dec 20 (APP): The District Administration of Khyber has imposed Section 144 to ban the illegal sale of mobile SIM cards.
The administration has also banned the sale of SIM cards through unauthorized individuals without permission from relevant companies.
Directives have been issued for the confiscation of all unauthorized SIM cards and equipment used in registration, with legal action ordered against individuals involved in the illegal sale of SIMs.
Additionally, measures have been taken to prevent the misuse of fingerprints on simple cards by unauthorized individuals. Section 144 will be immediately enforced and remain in effect for 2 months.
The District Police will take legal action under Section 188 of Pakistan’s Criminal Procedure Code against violators.
