Appeals for rejected nomination papers to start on Monday

ISLAMABAD, Dec 31 (APP): The process of filing appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers by returning officers for the upcoming general elections will commence on Monday and continue until Wednesday.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) spokesman, the scrutiny of nomination papers for candidates in the upcoming general elections across the country has been completed.
The Election Commission has already appointed 24 appellate tribunals to handle appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers by returning officers.
According to the schedule issued by the Election Commission (ECP), Appellate tribunals, headed by high court judges, are set to adjudicate appeals and deliver verdicts by January 10.
The updated list of candidates is scheduled for publication on January 11, and candidates have until January 12 to withdraw their candidature.
The electoral symbols will be allotted on Jan 13 and polling for the general elections will be held on February 8.

SNGPL cuts off another 485 connections for gas theft

LAHORE, Dec 31 (APP): In a relentless effort to curb gas theft, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) conducted a series of targeted raids in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Islamabad. During the operations, 485 unauthorized connections were disconnected, and fines totaling Rs 4.14 million were imposed.
According to a spokesman for the department, in Lahore, the regional team acted decisively, severing 25 connections for illegal gas usage and an additional 24 for compressor-related violations. Fines amounting to Rs 0.08 million were imposed on gas theft. In Rawalpindi, 183 connections were severed for unauthorized gas consumption, and 4 for compressor misuse, with fines
totaling Rs 0.11 million.
The crackdown extended to Islamabad, where three connections were disconnected due to illegal gas usage. In Multan, the team disconnected 4 connections for unauthorized gas usage and 36 for compressor violations, resulting in fines of Rs 0.45 million. One FIR was lodged against gas pilferers.
In Peshawar and Karak, SNGPL took stringent action by disconnecting 66 connections for direct and illegal gas usage, imposing fines amounting to Rs 2.33 million, and filing 2 FIRs against gas theft. The Mardan team disconnected 20 connections for illegal gas usage, with fines totaling Rs 0.92 million.
Sahiwal witnessed the disconnection of one connection for illegal gas usage and three for compressor violations, along with fines totaling Rs 0.21 million. In Sheikhupura, 18 connections were severed for unauthorized gas usage and 6 for compressor misuse, resulting in fines of Rs 0.01 million.
The Sargodha team disconnected one connection for illegal gas usage, while Bahawalpur disconnected 63 connections for unauthorized gas usage and four for compressor violations.
In Faisalabad, the team took action against one connection for illegal gas usage and another for compressor misuse, imposing fines totaling Rs 0.03 million.

Wani grieved over the death of Prof. Shawl

ISLAMABAD, Dec 31 (APP): Senior leader of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and Vice Chairman of Jammu Kashmir National Front, Altaf Hussain Wani has expressed his profound grief and sorrow over the death of renowned Kashmiri leader Professor Nazir Ahmad Shawl.
In his condolence messages, Wani, while paying eulogizing tribute to Prof. Nazir Ahmad Shawl, for his selfless services and efforts to highlight the Kashmir cause at the international level, said that the deceased leader had dedicated his whole life to the freedom of Kashmir.
Prof. Shawl, he said, raised his voice for the rights of the people of Kashmir at every world forum.
Wani said that the death of Prof. Shawl has caused a great loss to the freedom movement.
Extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, Wani prayed to Allah the almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant patience to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.

Training civil servants’ group from NIM visits Lahore, Sialkot

ISLAMABAD, Dec 31 (APP): A group of 14 under-training civil servants from the National Institute of Management (NIM) Islamabad visited Sialkot and
Lahore under the leadership of Muhammad Masood Ahmad who was heading the under training officers.
The visit is a part of a senior Management course which is currently in progress at NIM Academy here, a news release
on Sunday said.
The delegation visited the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce, Sialkot international airport, Forward Sports Sialkot, Sialkot surgical industry.
In Lahore, the delegation visited Akhuwat College University Kasur and the Orange Line Train project.
Such visits are undertaken by the NIM Islamabad for under-training officers to give them knowledge and practical skills beyond the classroom environment.

PHP issues security plan for new year night

MULTAN, Dec 31 (APP):Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) police Multan region have issued a security plan for New Year night.
SP Patrolling police Huma Naseeb said that the cases would be registered against those involved in one-wheeling,
aerial firing and fireworks.
She further said that the action would also be taken against mechanics who manufacture motorcycles for one-wheeling.
All forces and officials would perform security duty on highways in their beat area while Reserves would remain alert to avoid untoward incidents. The mobiles of the patrolling posts will also patrol on highways.
The crackdown against drug peddlers was underway and anti-social elements to be dealt with iron hands on New Year night.
SP said that one-wheeling and aerial firing could cause human loss and urged the parents to keep an eye on their children.

Drive against overcharging continues

NAROWAL, Dec 31 (APP):In the light of the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab Syed Mohsin Naqvi, the provision of food items at cheap prices is being ensured to citizens throughout the district. In this regard, the performance of price control magistrates is being reviewed on a daily basis.
These views were expressed by the deputy commissioner at an important meeting. DC Syed Hassan Raza said that price control magistrates should play an active role in maintaining stability in the prices of food items and inspect shops on a daily basis. They should not only impose heavy fines on violators but also seal shops and lodge an FIR against shopkeepers, he added.
According to the District Officer (DO) Industries, 25,612 inspections were made throughout the district from 1st December to 31st December as part of an ongoing campaign against hoarding and overcharging, in which 883 shopkeepers were found guilty of violations and a total fine of Rs.1,662,700 was imposed.
During the campaign, 4 cases were registered, 26 people were arrested and a shop was also sealed, he added.

64 police pickets to set up to maintain security during New Year Night

DG KHAN, Dec 31 (APP):Dera Ghazi  Khan (division) decided to set up 64 temporary police pickets to beef up security arrangements during New Year Night.
A total of 907 police officials along with 10 DSPs and 128 other officers were deputed at different locations to monitor
the security.
The security arrangements were extended across all four districts of the region including DG Khan, Layyah, Muzaffargarh and Rajanpur. Special attention has been given to key locations such as important venues, entertainment spots, public parks, bustling markets.
To maintain a vigilant presence, 46 police mobiles and 47 motorcycle squad teams will be continuously patrolling the area, complemented by constant monitoring through CCTV cameras. Additionally, extra traffic police personnel have been deployed on major highways to ensure smooth traffic flow.
The respective District Police Officers have received directives to swiftly bring to justice any elements that might disrupt the peace of society.

Prices of dry fruits soar as cold approaches

MULTAN, Dec 31 (APP):The prices of dry fruits gone up with the increase in cold weather as 25 to 30 percent rates high this year.
Talking to  APP here on Sunday, a shopkeeper named Kashif said that the prices of dry fruits were high as compared
to last year.
He used to sell dry fruits worth Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 daily whereas his sale is barely Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 now.
He said that many shopkeepers have left dry fruits business due to reduced sales.
According to the shopkeepers, the rates of pistachio Rs 3200 to 4000, cashew 3400 to 4400, pine nuts (chilghoza) 8000 to 12000, fig 2200 to 3000. Dry apricots 1000 to 1400, normal dry dates 550 to 800, solid walnuts 800 to 1400, walnuts 3000 to 3500, reedy 500 to 800, roasted chickpeas 800 to 1000, almonds 2600 to 3200, paper almonds 1600 to 2000 and groundnuts selling Rs 800 to 1000 per kg in the market.
A citizen named Anwar Shah said that among the long list of dry fruits, groundnuts and roasted gram which the common man could buy to some extent are now becoming out of reach.
Azhar Hayat said that the shopkeepers have arbitrarily increased the prices, each shopkeeper has set own prices in the same market. Everyone wants to eat dry fruits, but went out of the shops without purchasing due to high rates.  The daily wage class didn’t have the power to buy dry fruits.
Citizens have demanded regular check and balance system on the prices of dry fruits so that profiteers could be discouraged and fruits be made available to the people at fair prices.
