Pakistani student contributes to China’s migratory bird conservation efforts

BEIJING, Jan. 3 (APP):As winter sets in, flocks of whooper swans from Siberia migrate to the banks of the Yellow River in Pinglu County, north China’s Shanxi Province.

This spectacle attracts numerous tourists and photographers. Pakistani student Anees Ur Rahman was one of them this winter.

“These birds fascinate me and their presence enhances the beauty of our planet,” he told Xinhua.

His passion for birds and nature drove him to travel thousands of miles from Pakistan to study wildlife utilization protection at Beijing Forestry University in China.

During his time in China, Rahman has regularly participated in field visits and conducted research in the habitats of wild birds across the country, giving him in-depth knowledge of China’s ecological environment and bird conservation efforts.

“In recent years, the ecological environment of the Yellow River basin has been continuously improving, and the number of wild swans wintering here has peaked at over 10,000,” said Wang Chao, a staff member of the county’s forestry bureau.

China’s bird resources are among the richest in the world, with four of the nine major global bird migration flyways passing through China, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

The administration’s monitoring efforts confirm that the populations of more than 20 rare and endangered bird species in China have increased significantly in recent years.

Among these, the crested ibis is especially notable, with its population soaring from only seven in the 1980s to 7,000 this year.
“China’s rich biodiversity and its commitment to environmental conservation were key factors in my decision to study here,” Rahman said, adding that he saw an opportunity to contribute to and learn from this vibrant research community, particularly given the rapid environmental changes in China.

To better safeguard migratory birds during their migration, China has set up a comprehensive network to protect migratory birds, including breeding, wintering, and resting stations, and wetlands and natural reserves, covering almost every key node of the migratory bird flyways.

“Over the years, I have witnessed positive changes in China’s environmental practices. Stricter regulations, increased investment in renewable energy, and a growing emphasis on sustainable development indicate a significant shift towards a more environmentally conscious approach,” he said.

Thanks to a series of effective protection measures to provide migratory birds with safe habitats and breeding sites, migratory bird populations in China have been constantly growing.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has downgraded the threat of extinction of some rare wildlife in China, including red-crowned cranes and crested ibises.

“By continuing my research and engaging in collaborative conservation projects, I aim to contribute to global efforts in wildlife conservation, promoting sustainable practices for the benefit of both wildlife and local communities,” Rahman said.

Pakistan-China Friendship Hospital in Gwadar prepares for first patients

0

BEIJING, Jan 3 (APP): The Pakistan-China Friendship Hospital in the port city of Gwadar is preparing to admit its first patients.

The foundation stone for the hospital was laid in 2020. It’s part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and it’s been called a symbol of the two countries’ deep-rooted friendship.

Zhou Wenwei, Chief Consultant, Pakistan-China Friendship Hospital told CGTN, “China and Pakistan have a long history of friendship, and in the course of the Belt and Road Initiative, China wanted to invest in this hospital in Gwadar to benefit the local people.” Just days before its formal inauguration, I was given exclusive access to the 150-bed facility.

“The Pak-China Friendship Hospital is equipped with modern facilities and advanced medical technology, ensuring that residents of Gwadar and the surrounding areas have access to high-quality healthcare. Essential healthcare services were previously limited in the region.

DR Aftab Head of Indus Hospital Campus, Gwadar said, This hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, the construction is beautiful, and it will serve the purpose for the next twenty-five years. The people of this area have a lot of respect for the Chinese people, and we are also very thankful to them that they have provided us with this health facility.”

China’s commerce ministry funded the project which cost an estimated 30.5 million dollars and covers an area of eight acres. From emergency services to specialized medical care, the hospital can cater to a wide range of health needs, treating both common ailments and complex medical conditions.

It’s also expected to benefit the local economy by creating new employment opportunities and encouraging local businesses that contribute to the overall social economic development of the area.

Pakistani traders ride county’s booming economy

0

BEIJING, Jan 3 (APP): More Pakistani traders are settling in the Tashikurgan Tajik autonomous county of Kashgar, China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, to tap the strong business potential.

As the county is close to their homes, they said it’s easy to commute and fit into the local community. Booming tourism also brings more tourists, which benefits their businesses.
Murad Shah, a Pakistani jeweler, said his gemstone store in the county has welcomed about 100 to 200 tourists a day after it resumed operations in April.

He said his business is starting to recover after China optimized its COVID-19 policies. “There are a lot of tourists. The county has a diverse culture and landscape, and so many good attractions to see,” he said, adding he is hopeful about the future, China Daily reported.

One good reason for him to open a store in the county is that his hometown, a small village in Pakistan, is just 200 kilometers away, which can be reached in only three hours by car. Another reason is that China is developing very fast with a sound economy, he said.

“Many Pakistanis prefer to do business here because there is money here,” Shah said. At the store of Pakistani merchant Nazar Karim Ali, visitors come to buy gemstones, jewelry, blankets, cotton bed sheets, clothes and handicrafts, all made in Pakistan.

Karim is the second generation of business owners in his family. His father and uncle exported silk from China between 1989 and 1992. He said over the last 32 years, the county has made him feel at home, and he shares the same culture with local people.

Many initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor have made it very easy to do business, Karim said. There are good opportunities for Chinese people to invest in Pakistan, which also benefits Pakistanis, he said. Located on the Pamir Plateau, the county, with an area of 25,000 square kilometers and a population of 41,000, is the only one in China that borders three countries — Pakistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

It has two land ports — the Khunjerab Pass is 125 km from Sust Port in Pakistan, and the Karasu Port is only 14 km from Kulma Pass in Tajikistan.

Due to the ease of transportation, Tashikurgan Tajik trades with neighboring countries frequently, importing mainly minerals, agricultural products, and seafood while exporting textiles and clothing, mechanical and electrical products, and household goods, according to local authorities.

The number of tourist visits reached more than 1.34 million from January to late December, up 86 percent year-on-year, with May to October the peak season.

Tourists are lured by the county’s many unique attractions such as the 7,546-meter Mount Muztagata and Mount Qogir, or K2, the world’s second-highest peak at 8,611 meters, and a 2,000-year-old ancient stone city.
