3rd Global Congress-2025, Int’l Conferences begin at SMIU

KARACHI, Dec 17 (APP):Sindh Madressatul Islam University’s two-day 3rd Global Research Congress (3rd GRC-2025), along with five international conferences and one national conference, began at Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) on Wednesday.
Dr. Tariq Rafi, Chairman of Sindh HEC, along with Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, Vice Chancellor of SMIU, and other national and international guests, inaugurated the event by lighting the globe.
Addressing the inaugural session, Dr. Tariq Rafi congratulated Vice Chancellor of SMIU Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, faculty, and administrative staff on organizing the successful Global Research Congress, five international conferences, and one historic institution of the country- SMIU.
He said that it is a matter of pride for him to attend the much more valuable conference of SMIU, where a significant number of research scholars from Pakistan and abroad have participated.
The chairman of Sindh HEC said we are lacking in research; therefore, research culture must be inculcated in youth and faculty to bring the country to its heights.  He said education is playing a fundamental role in the development of a country.
Reciting examples from China, Singapore, and Malaysia, the chairman of Sindh HEC said these countries achieved their development goals after giving top priority to education. “In the 1980s, China was not a world economic power, but the president of that time, Deng Xiaoping, brought a major change in the country by giving priority to education above all things.
Today China has emerged as one of the world’s economic powers due to its education system, Dr. Tariq Rafi said adding that Pakistan has 62 percent of the youth population, which can play a significant role in the development of the country.
He said higher education in our country depends on education being imparted at the primary, secondary, and college levels, but unfortunately, education from primary to college is not generating good results.
SMIU- VC Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai thanked the chairman of Sindh HEC Dr. Tariq Rafi and other national and international guests for participating in the congress and conferences.
He said Sindh Madressatul Islam University is organising Global Research Congress along with international and national conferences since the last three years, which have contributed a lot to motivate academicians to take research work.
He said that this time SMIU has received 312 research papers from the research scholars of across the world, which reflect confidence and trust of researchers in SMIU.
Dr. Sahari said since the last five years SMIU has increased its enrolment from 1800 to 5500 students, overcome the financial deficit and started to produce PhD students. “Sindh Madressatul Islam has a 141 years’ legacy of academic excellence, but SMI University is just 13 years old, despite that fact the university is strengthening research culture by taking special efforts. Dr. Sahrai also expressed gratitude for Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for his support to the university.
Prof. Edwina Pio, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, Dr. Paul McEvoy, Dublin Business School, Ireland and Dr. Maria Isabel Moldando Garcia, University of Punjab, Lahore also addressed the inaugural session. They all talked on advantages and disadvantages of the AI. A brief documentary prepared by SMI on GRC was also be screened.  Mr. Wafa Mansoor Buriro, Assistant Professor at SMIU conducted the ceremony.
Later on, five International Conferences and one national conference were also inaugurated at different venues of the university, which were followed by technical and panel discussion sessions on different subjects.
The inauguration session besides national and international scholars  Shams Ul Haq Memon, former Secretary Sindh, Retired Justice Kausar Sultana, Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto University of Law (Szabul), Karachi, Dr. Muhammad Ismail Kumbhar, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, faculty, officers and students of SMIU attended the conference in a large number.

Sindh University announces winter vacations from Dec 29, 75% attendance made mandatory for exams

HYDERABAD, Dec 17 (APP):An important meeting of Pro Vice-Chancellors, focal persons and deans was held under the chair of Vice-Chancellor University of Sindh, Jamshoro Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Mari, during which key decisions were taken including the announcement of winter vacations from December 29, 2025, to January 16, 2026.
According to a university spokesperson,the meeting was held at the senate hall of the VC secretariat, where the Vice-Chancellor said that from the next semester onward, strict enforcement of student attendance would be ensured and a minimum of 75 percent attendance would be mandatory to appear in examinations.
He directed that teachers would be bound to mark class attendance online on a daily basis so that absentee students could be identified and their parents informed accordingly.
The Vice-Chancellor further said that faculty members were responsible for submitting examination results immediately after each semester’s examinations, adding that no delay would be tolerated in this regard.
He warned that teachers who were habitual in submitting examination results late could, in future, be replaced by other faculty members for conducting examinations of their courses.
The meeting unanimously decided that winter vacations would commence from December 29, 2025, and conclude on January 16, 2026. Faculty members of various departments were directed to submit the results of ongoing second semester examinations by January 20, 2026. However, faculty members of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Art and Design and departments involving thesis projects would be allowed to submit results by February 15.
The meeting was attended by Pro Vice-Chancellor main campus Professor Dr Abdul Sattar Shah, Pro Vice-Chancellor Thatta Campus Professor Dr Misbah Bibi Qureshi, Registrar Sajid Qayoom Memon along with other focal persons and deans.

Punjab govt committed to equal rights, development for minorities: minister

LAHORE, Dec 17 (APP):Punjab Minister for Minorities Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora has said that the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, was ensuring equal rights, protection and development opportunities for minority communities, as 12-day Christmas celebrations continue across the province.
The minister was addressing a grand Christmas ceremony held at FGA Ground, here on Wednesday, where he attended as chief guest. The event, organised under the auspices of Senior Pastor Anwar Fazal, was attended by government officials, religious leaders, community elders and a large number of members of the Christian community.
Speaking on the occasion, Ramesh Singh Arora extended Christmas greetings to the Christian community and praised the inclusive and minority-friendly vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. He said the Minorities Affairs Department’s budget had been increased by 300 percent under the present government, terming it a historic step towards the welfare and empowerment of minorities.
The provincial minister highlighted that, for the first time in Pakistan’s history, minority students were appearing in CSS examinations, reflecting growing confidence and equal opportunities. He also announced the continuation and expansion of scholarship programs for minority students to facilitate access to higher education.
He said that for the first time in Punjab’s history, the government was officially observing Christmas celebrations for 12 consecutive days, sending a strong message of interfaith harmony, respect and social inclusion.
The ceremony featured a carol service and candle-lighting ceremony symbolizing peace, hope and unity, followed by hymns, Christmas carols and skits conveying messages of love, sacrifice and harmony.
Senior Pastor Anwar Fazal thanked the Punjab government for officially recognizing Christmas celebrations and offered special prayers for Pakistan’s prosperity, stability, national unity and the success of state institutions.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Provincial Minister Ramesh Singh Arora cut the Christmas cake along with members of the Christian community.
Prominent attendees included Bishop Nadeem Kamran, Emanuel Ather MPA, ASP Kashmala Farwa, Pastor Shaukat Fazal, Bishop Izaac, Akbar Alam, Waseem Raja, Kashif Sajan, Saleem Shakim, Shahbaz Sahora and Saleem Rehmat.

Seminar on “Safe Her Growth” held

ISLAMABAD, Dec 17 (APP):In a significant step toward promoting women’s empowerment and safety, Growing Women organized a high-level seminar titled “Safe Her Growth” at Hi-Tech University, Taxila.
The seminar brought together government officials, law enforcement representatives, media leaders, academia, and social activists to discuss strategies for capacity building, security, and inclusive growth for women in Pakistan.

Ms. Sabeen Ghauri, Parliamentary Secretary for IT, highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to provide women with opportunities in technology and entrepreneurship. She announced that the Ministry of IT plans to launch a dedicated incubation center in Islamabad by February 2026, aimed at empowering women-led startups and fostering innovation.
“Creating safe and enabling environments for women is not just a moral obligation, it is essential for national development,” she said, emphasizing that digital literacy and technological skills are key to women’s empowerment in today’s era.
Ms. Mehak Gul, Assistant Director of NCCIA, stressed the role of collaborative initiatives between government and private sector organizations to ensure access to resources, mentorship, and economic opportunities for women. She underscored the importance of skill development programs and institutional support to help women achieve independence and leadership positions in their respective fields.
Former DG NADRA, Mr. Anwar Ajmal, spoke about the crucial role of secure digital identification systems in protecting women’s rights and privacy. He noted, “Technology is a double-edged sword—it provides opportunities, but it also poses risks. Awareness and accessibility are the first steps in ensuring that women are protected while benefiting from digital advancements.”
Former DG FIA, Mr. Rana Shahid, highlighted the importance of sensitizing men in society and within law enforcement agencies. He emphasized that training for men is essential to protect women from harassment and cybercrime, and to promote respect for women in both professional and public spaces. “A safe society begins with awareness and accountability among all members, especially men,” he stated.
Ms. Sadaf Asim, Former Senior Vice President of the Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry, spoke on the economic empowerment of women. She encouraged women to take leadership roles in business, emphasizing that mentorship and institutional backing are crucial for sustainable growth. “Women must be empowered not just socially but economically, so that their contributions are recognized and their independence secured,” she said.

Mr. Rana Imran Latif, Senior Journalist and Chairman of Pyas International, stressed the media’s role in promoting awareness about women’s rights and security. He called for responsible journalism that highlights women’s achievements while also addressing social challenges and creating a dialogue for positive change.
Ms Romana Chaudhry, Founder of Women Empowerment, shared her vision for community-driven initiatives that focus on skill development, mentorship, and creating safe spaces for women to grow personally and professionally. She emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among civil society, government, and educational institutions to achieve meaningful impact.
Officials from Hi-Tech University presented their ongoing projects aimed at women’s education and professional development, highlighting programs under HOPE Academy and ORIC that empower female students to excel in STEM, entrepreneurship, and research.
The seminar also featured discussions on cyber safety, legal rights, and protective mechanisms available for women. Experts stressed the need for awareness campaigns, reporting mechanisms for cybercrimes, and institutional support to ensure women can work and participate in society without fear.
The event concluded with a call to action, urging stakeholders to work collectively to create an inclusive and safe environment where women can thrive. “Empowering women is not a choice—it is a necessity for national progress. When women are safe and empowered, communities prosper,” remarked Ms. Romana Chaudhry.
The seminar reinforced the shared commitment of government officials, law enforcement, media, academia, and social organizations to ensure that Pakistan’s women have the support, security, and opportunities necessary to grow safely and sustainably.

Special arrangements being for Christmas : Commissioner Karachi

KARACHI, Dec 17 (APP): Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi Wednesday said that special arrangements are being made for fool-proof security, cleanliness and the provision of civic amenities around churches on Christmas.
He said this in a meeting participated by the delegation of First United Presbyterian Church of Pakistan  at his office.
He directed  all Deputy Commissioners to take measures in their respective districts, in consultation and coordination with the Christian community and church administrators, to ensure security, cleanliness, civic facilities and the arrangement for the traffic flow at churches during the Christmas period.
He added that the police and other security agencies, the Karachi Municipal Corporation, town municipal corporation, cantonment boards, Water and Sewerage Board, Solid Waste Management Authority and traffic police have been directed to take priority actions.
These include ensuring special cleaning around churches, functional street lights and smooth traffic flow during Christmas celebrations.
The KE has also been asked  to avoid load-shedding at all churches on Christmas.
On this occasion, a delegation from the First United Presbyterian Church of Pakistan briefed the commissioner  about the  Christmas peace rally organized by the Christian community on 21st  December.
The Commissioner directed the Deputy Commissioner (East) to provide the necessary facilities for the rally. The delegation included Chairman of Rapha  Mission International, Pastor Suleman Manzoor, former  Senator  Anwar Lal Dean and others.
Meanwhile, on the Commissioner’s directive  Additional Commissioner One Ghulam Mehdi Shah held a meeting with senior officials of the relevant departments to review the arrangements for Christmas celebrations at churches.
The Additional Commissioner directed the concerned departments to take the necessary steps to provide civic amenities and support the events at the churches.

ICT Police, educational institutions unite to combat drug abuse

ISLAMABAD, Dec 17 (APP): Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi chaired a high-level coordination meeting at the Central Police Office on Wednesday, bringing together Islamabad Police and representatives of schools and colleges to strengthen joint efforts against drug abuse under the “Nasha Ab Nahi” campaign.

An official told APP that senior police officers and representatives of various educational institutions attended the meeting, during which Islamabad Police and school and college administrations formally appointed focal persons to ensure effective coordination and timely sharing of information.
During the meeting, it was decided to develop a comprehensive joint strategy to curb narcotics and dismantle networks involved in the drug trade. The participants also agreed to organise special awareness seminars in educational institutions to educate students about the harmful effects of narcotics and protect the younger generation from drug abuse.
The meeting reaffirmed that all available resources would be utilised to safeguard students and that no negligence or leniency would be tolerated at any stage. It was further resolved that drug networks would be fully exposed and dismantled, and all individuals involved would face strict legal action.
IGP Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi said that at the government level, Islamabad Police, along with other law-enforcement agencies, were working relentlessly to eliminate narcotics. He added that the “Nasha Ab Nahi” campaign was a key initiative aimed at making Islamabad drug-free.
He noted that for better results and effective monitoring, representatives of educational institutions would be provided with proper training, and urged school and college administrations to work closely with law-enforcement agencies to protect students.
Calling for collective responsibility, the IGP Rizvi emphasized that awareness campaigns should be conducted jointly to educate youth about the dangers of narcotics. He reiterated that Islamabad Police would not allow any criminal elements to destroy the future of the younger generation and that those involved in the drug trade would be brought to justice under the law.

DPM/FM Dar, Iraqi counterpart exchange views on strengthening bilateral cooperation

ISLAMABAD, Dec 17 (APP): Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Iraq Dr. Fuad Mohammed Hussein, Wednesday, reaffirmed the brotherly Pakistan–Iraq relations, exchanged views on strengthening bilateral cooperation, and highlighted the importance of high-level exchanges.

DPM/FM Dar spoke with his Iraqi counterpart, and they also underscored their commitment to enhancing engagement across political and economic affairs, as well as promoting people-to-people ties, Foreign Office Spokesperson said in a press release.

PDWP approves development projects worth Rs. 16bln

LAHORE, Dec 17 (APP):The 53rd meeting of Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) here Wednesday approved development scheme in various sectors with an accumulative estimated cost of Rs 16 billion.
Approval was also granted to forward Rs. 43 billion PULSE project to CDWP for final approval.
Chaired by Planning and Development Board Punjab’s Chairman Dr Naeem Rauf, the forum approved the following schemes:
Establishment of Model Agriculture Malls in Punjab (Phase-II) with an estimated cost of Rs. 1081.935 million.
Establishment of a Shrimp Estate with Value Chain Components at Chak 58NB, Tehsil and District Sargodha, at an estimated cost of Rs. 13 billion.
 Establishment of PFA House in Lahore at a cost of Rs. 1,200 million.
Strengthening Agricultural Marketing Information Service (SAMIS) through the Establishment of Market Facilitation Centers (MFCs) – (Position paper approved)
Construction of Dual Carriageway from Fateh Jang–Dhullian–Talagang Road to Kharala, with a length of 4.10 km in Tehsil Fateh Jang, District Attock with an estimated cost of Rs. 1,265.470 million
The meeting was attended by the board Secretary and members, Chief Economist and representatives from relevant departments including Finance, Irrigation, Tourism, Health, Special Education and HR&MA.

Medical experts stress research and quality leadership at PGMI M-CON 2025

LAHORE, Dec 17 (APP):Medical experts stressed the pivotal role of advanced research and quality leadership in strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare system while addressing the PGMI M-CON 2025 conference at Lahore General Hospital (LGH) on Wednesday.
Renowned medical scientist and pioneer of test-tube baby technology in Pakistan, Sitara-e-Imtiaz Prof. Rashid Latif Khan, said that the faculty of Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) has earned global recognition. He stressed that young doctors must align themselves with international medical advancements to ensure the provision of world-class healthcare facilities to the public.
Principal Ameer-ud-Din Medical College (AMC) Prof. Dr. Farooq Afzal underlined that effective clinical decision-making is impossible without research. He urged doctors to adopt evidence-based research as an essential component of their professional training, adding that quality education and internationally recognized research are crucial for the country’s brighter future.
Speakers also highlighted the significance of quality leadership, stating that ethical and research-driven leadership strengthens healthcare institutions, as medical decisions directly affect human lives. They noted that strong leadership promotes discipline and improves patient care in hospitals.
At the conclusion of the conference, which was attended by a large number of medical professionals and students from across Punjab, Prof. Dr. Farooq Afzal presented commemorative shields to the distinguished guests and reaffirmed PGMI’s commitment to promoting medical education, research and quality leadership through future academic initiatives.

FAC members call on KP Secretary Forests

PESHAWAR, Dec 17 (APP):The members of the Forest Action Committee (FAC) held an important meeting with the Secretary Forest Junaid Khan and briefed him on the long-standing issues faced by forest guards and foresters.
During the session, key matters were discussed, particularly promotions, martyrs’ package, upgradation, an increase in risk allowance, and other important employee-related issues.
The members of the FAC presented their demands and concerns before the Secretary in a highly responsible manner.
Secretary Forest Junaid Khan listened attentively and sincerely to all the points and assured that he would make every possible effort to resolve the legitimate issues of forest guards and foresters.
He promised that a formal meeting would be convened in January and that sincere efforts would be made to resolve all the issues.
This meeting proved to be an important step toward mutual trust, positive progress, and a brighter future for forest employees.
The committee members appreciated the Secretary’s cooperation and serious approach and expressed hope that practical steps would be seen soon.
