Addressing a press conference, the GB chief minister said unlike opposition political parties, the PML(N) fulfilled all its promises it made with people of Gilgit Baltistan during election campaign in 2013 and its budget was raised upto Rs 24 billion in three years.
Since education and health played important role in uplifting living standard of people, he said the government shifted more focus on the education sector and set up Rs 500 million education endowment fund to provide free education to the poor students.

It was the PML(N) that started work on the Skardu road, besides making Kharmung and Shigar as districts of GB, adding meeting was held with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi regarding the Council’s abolishment and was apprised him about reservations in this regard.
He said the prime minister declined to continue the council as it had become a sort of third government in the country, thereby the PML(N) was not in its favour.
He said the council was abolished in the larger interest of the country and five members of his party rendered sacrifice, adding federal officers were leading lavish life on the council’s budget.
Moreover, he added that PPP imposed tax in GB while the PML(N) suspended it in order to extend relief to common people. However, he said that officers of grade 18 and above would be taxed while poor employees would be exempted.

Capital’s Hospitality industry under stress of risk & hope

0

ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP):The capital’s hospitality industry‘s growth moves at snail’s pace since 2015 despite massive increase in population
and significant improvement in the country’s overall security situation.
The imposition of specific taxes, involvement of huge investment due to hike in commercial property’s tax
and CDA’s crackdown against those facilities established in the residential areas, are seemingly major reasons
for the sluggishness of this industry.
An official from Disaster Management Authority (DMA), requesting anonymity said that the business of
restaurants and hotels in Islamabad was on boom up-till 2015 as some 710 hotels were established since
Islamabad’s inception as capital of the country. In 2016, some thirty five more facilities were introduced
taking the number to 745, he added.
He said now there were 800 registered hotels in Islamabad among them 61 are foreign-brand restaurants,
making impressive contribution to the economy.
He said these were still insufficient for a population of some 1,014,825 in urban areas.
Najam saqib, running Baba hotel at Aabpara for the last 17 years said it was a tough task to run a hotel
or restaurant as it bore much expenses including shop’s rent, heavy utility bills, quality chef and entertaining
staff.
“Some years ago, majority of the settlers especially come from Murree opt for this business but now they
are leaving this business and looking for some other viable options”, he added.
He informed that just two or three new restaurants have opened up in this area in the last two years “which
shows the business is no more attractive to be taken afresh.”
“There are no incentives offered for the hotel industry like interest-free loan, exemption of taxes for some
certain period from start and availability of land at affordable rates.”
A manager of city’s one of the popular hotel requesting anonymity said due to unauthorized marriage halls
and marquees their business was badly affected and events and conferences were now their major earnings.
He demanded for competitive environment to ensure more investment in the sector and some specific
incentives to help this industry contribute to national economy.

White House rally demands clear message to India to stop atrocities in held Kashmir

0

WASHINGTON, May 2 (APP):The United Nations should conduct an investigation into the rape and killing of an 8-year-old Muslim girl in Kashmir by supporters of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and make accountable those guilty of this heinous crime, speakers demanded at a rally outside the White House held this weekend.
Asifa Bano was killed in January in a Hindu temple in the Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, but the incident hit the limelight last month when police booked Hindu men, including police officials, who have since been protected by sitting state ministers belonging to ruling Bharatia Janata Party (BJP) of Prime Minister Modi.
Asifa was abducted, drugged, gang raped and finally murdered simply because she was a Muslim in the so-called largest democracy of India.
Speakers at the rally said that killers used the rape as a weapon of terror and fear to force not only Asifa but her whole community out of the city of Kahua. The participants at the rally wavied placards and chanting “Justice for Asifa”; “No Justice No Peace” “Kathua Rape: Stain on Indian Democracy” “Wake Up Wake Up: UN Wake Up,”
Addressing the rally, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Secretary General, World Kashmir Awareness Forum thanked Antonia Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, who strongly condemned the gang rape and murder of Asifa as a “horrific” incident. She has also demanded that those who are guilty of this crime need to be brought to justice.
Fai called upon the Secretary General as the custodian of human rights to send the clear message to the Government of India that such brutality and cruelty cannot be tolerated in the comity of nations in this day and age.
He demanded that the investigation of Asifa’s case has to be impartial, and has to be done by a neutral agency like the United Nations and those found guilty need to be kept accountable.
Professor Imtiaz Khan, President, Kashmiri American Council said that Asifa’s case was not an isolated incident as more than 10,000 innocent women have been victims of heinous crimes in the held valley. He said all these cases need to be reopened and investigated by an international neutral agency.
Dr. Khan cited the example of Kanun Poshpora where more than 100 women between the ages of 7 to 70 were gang raped in 1991. It was reported by the New York Times, Amnesty International and other NGO’s, yet no investigation has taken place until today.
Sardar Sawar Khan, former Advisor to the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir said that the murder of Asifa should be an eye opener for the world powers that their silence has given sense of immunity to the Indian army as well as to the ruling party BJP.
Sawar Khan called upon the US Administration to play an active role in bringing the governments of India and Pakistan to the negotiating table along with the leadership of the people of Kashmir so that a durable and lasting solution is found to the 70 years old conflict of Kashmir.
Several other Kashmiri leaders and speakers in their remarks highlighted the ongoing atrocities in Kashmir and condemned the world silence that has encouraged the Indian government to continue to unleash a reign of terror on innocent Kashmiri people.
Those who spoke included Dr. Zafar Noori, Dr. Zulfiqar Kazmi, Director, Common Ground USA, Dr. M. A. Dhar, Sardar Aftab Roshan Khan, Ms. Shamshad Begum, Hamid Malik, Khalid Faheem, Sardar Zahid Khan, Dr. A. R. Meer, Sardar Zubair Khan, Hisham Khan, Sardar Zarif Khan and Sardar Zulfiqar Roshan Khan.

Nine out of 10 people breathing polluted air: WHO

0

UNITED NATIONS, May 2 (APP)::Air pollution claims seven million lives a year, UN health experts said Wednesday, amid new data showing that the problem affects nine out of ten people worldwide.
In a call for member states to take action urgently, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, warned that air pollution “threatens us all, but the poorest and most marginalized people bear the brunt of the burden.”
According to WHO’s ambient air quality database, despite some improvements, pollution levels are “still dangerously high” in most parts of the world.
This includes “many of the world’s mega cities”, according to Dr Maria Neira, WHO’s Director of the Department of Public Health, Social and Environmental Determinants of Health, who added that air quality levels in those urban centres, exceed WHO guidelines by more than five times.
Covering more than 4,300 cities in 108 countries, the data points to an estimated 4.2 million deaths each year caused by outdoor air pollution, with 3.8 million fatalities overall, owing to household pollutants, linked to cooking.
More than 90 per cent of victims come from low- and middle-income countries in Asia and Africa, followed by others in the Eastern Mediterranean region, Europe and the Americas.
The threat to human health comes from exposure to near-invisible toxins that are present in polluted air as fine particles.
These pollutants “some of the most dangerous being sulfates, nitrates and black carbon“ penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream and cause a range of diseases including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer and other respiratory infections.
According to WHO, global air pollution is linked to inefficient energy use in every sector of human activity: coal-fired power plants, industry, agriculture and transport.
Waste burning and deforestation are additional sources of air pollution, as are sand and desert dust, the agency says.
Inside people’s houses, the main source of air pollution stems from lack of access to clean cooking fuels.
It’s a problem that affects more than 40 per cent of the world’s population “some three billion people” a situation that the WHO Director-General described as “unacceptable”.
Although there are major gaps on air pollution data from regions including the Western Pacific and Africa – where information was available in only eight out of 47 countries on the continent – the WHO chief noted that the international community was “starting to pay attention and take action” on air pollution, recognizing it as a threat to sustainable development.
“The good news is that we are seeing more and more governments increasing commitments to monitor and reduce air pollution as well as more global action from the health sector and other sectors like transport, housing and energy,” he said.
WHO’s Dr Neira echoed that message, highlighting “an acceleration of political interest in this global public health challenge”. But she noted that the increased commitment to recording air pollution data to date, had come mostly from high-income countries.
Countries that are taking measures to reduce air pollution include India, WHO says, where one new scheme has provided free gas connections for more than 37 million women, to help them make the switch to clean energy use in the home.
The publication of WHO’s findings comes ahead of the first Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health, which is due to run from 30 October to 1 November in Geneva, where the UN agency aims to push for improved air quality and combat the harmful effects of climate change.

‘No credible evidence’ Iran is making nukes: UN Nuclear agency

UNITED NATIONS, May 2 (APP)::The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says it has “no credible” evidence that Iran was working on developing a nuclear “explosive device” after 2009 and that the UN’s nuclear watchdog considered the issue “closed” after it was presented in a report in December 2015.
The 2015 report “stated that the agency had no credible indications of activities in Iran relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device after 2009. Based on the director-general’s report, the board of governors declared that its consideration of this issue was closed,” the IAEA said in a statement Tuesday.
“In line with standard IAEA practice, the IAEA evaluates all safeguards-relevant information available to it. However, it is not the practice of the IAEA to publicly discuss issues related to any such information,” it added.
The IAEA statement comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed on April 30 that Israel had documents that showed new “proof” of an Iranian nuclear-weapons plan that could be activated at any time.
Under an agreement in 2015 with world leaders, Iran curbed its enrichment of uranium for nuclear fuel to ease concerns it could be put to use in developing bomb material. In return, Tehran won relief from most international sanctions.
Since then, UN nuclear inspectors have repeatedly reported that Iran is heeding the terms of the deal.
Iran has accused Netanyahu of being an “infamous liar” over the allegations, which come as the United States is considering whether to pull out of an atomic accord with Tehran, which has always rejected allegations that it sought a nuclear weapon, insisting its atomic programme was solely for civilian purposes.
“The documents (referred by Netanyahu) show that Iran had a secret nuclear-weapons program for years” while it was denying it was pursuing such weapons, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said late on April 30 as he returned to Washington from a trip to Europe and the Middle East.
“What this means is [Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers] was not constructed on a foundation of good faith or transparency. It was built on Iran’s lies,” Pompeo said, adding that the trove of documents Israel said it obtained on Iran’s so-called Project Amad to develop nuclear weapons before 2004 contain “new information.”
“The Iranians have consistently taken the position that they’ve never had a programme like this. This will belie any notion that there wasn’t a programme,” Pompeo said.
Netanyahu made his dramatic announcement less than two weeks before the May 12 deadline for U.S. President Donald Trump to decide whether he will withdraw from the deal, which requires Iran to curb some of its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
The White House on May 1, said the United States “certainly supported” efforts by Netanyahu to release intelligence about Iran’s nuclear programme.
In a May 1, interview with CNN, Netanyahu said he did not seek war with Iran, but it was Tehran “that’s changing the rules in the region.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said in a statement on May 1, that the accusations Tehran lied about its nuclear ambitions were “worn-out, useless, and shameful” and came from a “broke and infamous liar who has had nothing to offer except lies and deceits.”
“How convenient. Coordinated timing of alleged intelligence revelations,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Twitter, adding that the Israeli claims were “ridiculous” and “a rehash of old allegations.”
