Pak-Iran bilateral ties crucial for regional stability, counter-terrorism efforts: Ashrafi
ISLAMABAD, Jan 22 (APP): Special Representative of the Prime Minister for Religious Harmony and the Pakistani Diaspora in the Middle East and Muslim Countries Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi on Monday that bilateral ties between Pakistan and Iran were crucial for regional stability and counter-terrorism efforts
Addressing a press conference, Ashrafi shed light on a diverse array of issues spanning from geopolitical relations to religious significance.
He said that the proactive measures taken by the Government of Pakistan and the military leadership for peace and stability in the region had gained significant recognition at the global stage.
Ashrafi clarified that that Pakistan’s intelligence-based operations specifically targeted terrorists carrying out terror acts inside Pakistan and not Iranian nationals.
He lauded the unity of the entire Pakistani nation, emphasizing collective strength and resilience in the face of challenges. He underscored Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities, reinforcing the nation’s preparedness.
Underlining Pakistan’s extensive global ties, he reiterated that the nation was consistently engaged with the entire Islamic world, always endeavouring for peace and security along with strong condemnation of terrorism.
He affirmed that the entire nation was committed to Pakistan’s security and unequivocally supported their armed forces.
Accentuating the strong Islamic brotherhood, Ashrafi said the Pak-Iran relations were deep-rooted, characterized by a profound connection between the two nations.
He emphasized that enhancing bilateral relations between Pakistan and Iran was crucial for fostering regional stability and mitigating terrorist activities. Strengthened cooperation in intelligence sharing, border management, and joint counter-terrorism efforts could create a more formidable front against common security threats.
He said by building trust and collaboration, both nations could effectively address the challenges posed by terrorism, promoting a secure environment for the entire region.
Ashrafi praised Iran’s endeavours against the terrorists associated with the Balochistan Liberation Army, particularly those involved in acts of terrorism within Pakistan.
Referring to the prime minister’s impassioned plea, Ashrafi, who is also the Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council, said that under the auspices of PUC a nationwide prayer for rain, ‘Namaz-e-Istisqa’, would be offered on Friday seeking the divine intervention for the much-needed rainfall.
Expressing solidarity with the Gaza people, he said both the government and the nation were united in supporting the Palestinian cause. He noted that Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, during a meeting with the Palestinian ambassador, assured Pakistan’s full cooperation and support.
He mentioned that two vessels from the Pakistani Navy had been dispatched to deliver aid, showcasing Pakistan’s proactive engagement and genuine concern for the situation in Palestine.
Ashrafi raised questions about the motives of certain groups staging protest demonstration in the Federal Capital and the targeting of innocent individuals by terrorists within Pakistan, highlighting the imperative for accountability.

Tobacco industry condemn lack of enforcement measures
ISLAMABAD, Jan 22 (APP): Representatives from Pakistan Tobacco Company (PTC) on Monday expressed deep concerns over the sustainability of its business as a result of inappropriate policy measures and the alarming rise in illicit trade.
The recent data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Large Scale Manufacturing (LSM) Index, has highlighted a significant and concerning trend within the legitimate tobacco sector, said a news release here.
According to the latest figures, the production of the legitimate tobacco sector has fallen forty times more than the overall LSM Output during July 2023 to November 2023, however, the consumption of cigarettes has remained stagnant.
This distressing trend underscores the adverse impact of policy decisions that have disproportionately affected the legitimate tobacco industry.
A comprehensive and balanced approach to ensure a level playing field for the legitimate tobacco sector is imperative to ensure long-term sustainability.
Despite the implementation of a Track and Trace System (TTS), rising incidence of fake stamps being affixed on counterfeit packs of leading cigarette brands was also a key issue shared by the representatives.
Qasim Tariq, Senior Business Development Manager said that “around 850 million counterfeit cigarette sticks are currently being sold all across Pakistan including major metro cities like Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
This figure stands equivalent to 42.5 million packs featuring fake stamps, resulting in substantial loss of approximately Rs 5.7 billion to Pakistan”.
Rising counterfeit draws serious questions on the efficacy of the much-lauded track and trace system which is yet to be implemented across local cigarette manufacturers in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
The representatives urged the Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) with jurisdiction to conduct extensive enforcement at the retail level against this rising menace.
The representatives also shared their concerns about a recent misleading report making rounds in the media pertaining to missed revenue collection of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
The claims made in the report, are not only false but also raise questions about the intentions behind publishing such a report.
The report claims that the illicit sector is less than 10% across Pakistan. It is surprising that this number goes against even what the FBR itself claims of illicit trade being more than 36.5% for the period in question.
Secondly, the report claimed that government revenue declined due to fiscal changes in the excise structure but stops short of revealing the complete picture.
From 2012–16, the government switched to a 2-Tier structure from a 3-Tier structure which was implemented in Pakistan since 1992. This caused revenues to fall by more than 25% due to above inflation excise increase in 2015-16 and illicit trade hovered close to 50% of the market, as it is today.
To curb the menace of illicit trade the government decided to re-introduce a 3-Tier system which not only increased revenues by more than 40% but also discouraged illicit cigarette trade.
Extensive government-led national anti-illicit trade strategy, effective fiscal measures and strict enforcement against illicit trade across the value chain with key focus on retail level is the need of the hour.
