Intelligence officials nab Iranian oil smuggling ring in major crackdown

SUKKUR, Jan 12 (APP):Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement agencies in Sukkur conducted a joint raid on a flour mill in the Ali Wahan area and uncovered a large-scale Iranian oil smuggling operation.
The successful operation netted approximately 50,000 liters of illegal Iranian oil, believed to be destined for illegal sale to PS pump owners through contractor trucks.
According to Customs Sukkur officials on Friday, the Intelligence agencies, district administration, and customs officials teamed up for the successful bust.
Responding to the raid, several truck drivers attempted to flee the scene, with 7-8 vehicles evading capture. However, swift police pursuit resulted in the apprehension of two drivers and the seizure of their trucks.
Four individuals, including the apprehended truck drivers, are currently in custody pending further investigation, said Customs officials. Authorities believe this operation has dealt a significant blow to the Iranian oil smuggling ring operating in the region.

China urges all parties in Yemen to prevent conflict expansion

BEIJING, Jan 12 (APP): Expressing concern over escalation of tensions in the Red Sea, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson on Friday called on all sides to prevent the Yemen conflict from expanding.

“We urge the relevant parties to keep calm and exercise restraint to prevent the conflict from expanding,” Mao Ning said during her regular briefing.

The spokesperson stressed that the Red Sea was an important corridor for international trade in goods and energy.

Mao Ning voiced the hope that all parties concerned would play a constructive and responsible role in maintaining the security and stability of the Red Sea region. “This is in the common interest of the international community.”

She added that China was willing to work with all parties to maintain communication, push for the situation to cool down and work together to maintain the security of international shipping lanes.

Pakistani experts attend Sanya Seed Industry Scientists Conference in China

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (APP): The third Sanya International Seed Industry Scientists Conference and the 2024 International Seed Technology Expo successfully concluded in Sanya, Hainan, China.

The event brought together over 100 seed industry experts and representatives from agricultural universities, institutions, and international organizations from countries such as China, Thailand, Turkey, and Pakistan to share cutting-edge advancements in the field and discuss collaborative avenues for the future.

The event has yielded fruitful results, like, on January 4, a seed industry innovation signing ceremony was held, putting plans in motion to set up the world’s first online seed trading platform.

According to the plan, Hainan Baikal Germplasm Technology Trading Co. Ltd. together with Sanya Seed Industry Scientists Alliance will invest ¥100 million to create an innovative seed industry trading platform, which is a new seed evaluation and trading system combining futures, warrants, and stock trading models, China Economic Net (CEN) reported.

On the same day, the Sanya Electron Accelerator Mutagenesis Breeding Laboratory signed seven contracts to jointly promote the innovative development of the seed industry.

Several university research institutes, laboratories, companies, and other industry insiders agreed to work together with the Laboratory on the selection and cultivation of new varieties of fresh corn, soybean, rice, sugar cane, banana, garlic, pepper, and other types of vegetables and tropical fruit trees.

The Laboratory signed cooperative agreements with a total contract value of over RMB 5 million.

Ambassador Hashmi visits Chinese companies, meets Pakistani diaspora in Chengdu

BEIJING, Jan.12, (APP): Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi visited New Hope, a Fortune 500 company in Chengdu, Sichuan Province and met its Vice President Zhuang Shuai.

The ambassador briefed him on exciting investment and trade opportunities for the Chinese investors in Pakistan, including through the protocol recently signed for the export of Pakistani dairy products to China.

He held a separate meeting with Chen Changwei, Chairman of Puji Group – a subsidiary of which has been growing dry chilies and is now exporting them from Pakistan.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed ongoing cooperation and discussed future plans.

Ambassador Hashmi also met Pakistani students, businessmen and professionals in Chengdu.

Expressing his pleasure over the meeting, he said the Pakistan diaspora was a vital link to advancement of Pakistan-China economic, technological and people-to-people ties.

PESCO disconnects power supply of hotels, refugees’ camp

KOHAT, Jan 12 (APP):Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) surveillance teams on Friday conducted raids against electricity theft here and disconnected the electricity supply of various commercial users.
The surveillance team visited business centers and found electricity theft by Zahoor and Sons Dairy Farm, Khyber Shinwari Hotel, Islamia Hostel and others.
The team also raided the Afghan refugee camp against electricity theft and found a power supply through a tempered meter, said the PESCO Spokesperson.
Legal action was initiated against the camp administration and others after disconnecting the power supply.

Renowned singer, actor, script writer Inayat Hussain Bhatti remembered

ISLAMABAD, Jan 12 (APP):The birth anniversary of the singer, actor, producer, director, scriptwriter, columnist and protagonist of the development of the Punjabi language and literature Inayat Hussain Bhatti was observed on Friday.
Born on January 12,  1928, in Gujrat Bhatti moved to Lahore to pursue further studies. After some time he satrted singing for Radio Pakistan and subsequently, entered the film industry as a playback singer in 1949 through the Punjabi hit ‘Pheray’.
He was a multi-talented distinguished singer, actor, director author, social leader and columnist.
He has been interested in Sufi poetry since he was a child. Inayat sang for nearly 500 films, in both Urdu and Punjabi. His impressive discography includes 2,500 songs.
In 1997, he suffered an attack of paralysis, which impaired his speech and kept him bedridden for most of the time thereafter. He died on May 31, 1999.

Govt has introduced AI in hospitals: Dr Javed

LAHORE, Jan 12 (APP):Caretaker Punjab Health Minister Prof Dr. Javed Akram said that the government had introduced a historic artificial intelligence systems in government hospitals across the province .
Speaking at a book launch event, he emphasized the need for innovation in daily life and highlighted the pivotal role of technology in the development of powerful economies worldwide.
During his address, Dr. Akram stressed the importance of evidence-based policies in addressing Pakistan’s challenges and advocated for local technology development instead of relying on imports. He lamented the absence of biotechnology plants in Pakistan and urged a collective effort, suggesting an all-party conference to enhance the system.
The event, attended by prominent figures such as Chairman Punjab Higher Education Commission Dr. Shahid Munir and Vice Chancellor University of Technology Prof. Dr. Adnan Noor Mian, showcased the commitment to advancing modern research and technology in the region. Collaborative efforts imperative to rehabilitate economy on strong footing: FCCI

FAISALABAD, Jan 12 (APP):Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) acting President Dr Sajjad Arshad said that collaborative efforts by all quarters including the bureaucracy, politicians, business community and judiciary were imperative to rehabilitate the economy on a strong footing and sustained basis.
He was addressing a meeting of the officers of 34th Senior Management Course (SMC) of the National Institute of Management (NIM) Peshawar who visited the FCCI here. He said that 40 percent of SMEs had been closed due to unprecedented inflation, high energy costs, delay in payment of refund claims, political uncertainty and inconsistent policies. “Therefore, all quarters concerned must pay heed to this burning issue on an urgent basis for greater national interest,” he added.
About the role and functioning of the FCCI, he said that the chamber remained in touch with the government to resolve the issues faced by the business community. “The FCCI played a key role in budget formulation”, he said and added that it was for the first time that the FCCI President was picked as chairman of the tax anomaly committee instead of someone from the FPCCI.
He said that ministries concerned were always ready to discuss issues but they have their own limitations due to the direct intervention of the IMF.  He said that exports had declined from $18-19bn to $14bn. “This slide will continue if immediate prudent and remedial measures were not taken”, he said and added that energy costs had further fuelled inflation.
He said that electricity in Bangladesh was available at 8, in Vietnam its cost was 6 while in Pakistan it was provided at 14 cent per unit. He said that gas prices had also witnessed a hefty increase and in the situation Pakistan could not compete with their regional competitors.
Quoting his visit to China, he said that the country was producing 50% electricity from solar and wind whereas the remaining 50% from hydel sources. He said that the government should provide subsidized loans at 6% to the SME sector to generate solar energy. “We have unlimited resources of coal in Thar but we failed to fully exploit its potential,” he added.
About the negative impact of political instability on the economy, he said that exports, FDI and remittances were also decreasing along with the stalemate of technology transfer. “Our diplomatic force should work proactively to provide conducive climate to the exporters to overcome these issues,” he demanded, adding, “We must introduce long-term policies without any interruption to stabilize the economy.”
About GSP plus status, he said, “We failed to fully exploit its potential and our exporters should start exporting non-traditional items. This facility will continue up to 2027 and we must get maximum benefit from it”, he said and added, “We are exporting rice of $2.4bn while we have the potential to increase it up to $10bn.”
Dr Sajjad Arshad said that Pakistan was predominantly an agrarian economy and we must introduce value added agri and dairy products from our basic field produce.
He said that the Punjab government had established the first ever Business Facilitation Centre in Lahore while another one was nearing completion in Faisalabad. “However, I could not identify its benefits for the business community as it would be too early to comment on it”, he added.
The Acting FCCI President said that cotton production had declined in Punjab and the Chief Minister had assured to fix the minimum cotton price at Rs. 8,000 but it was being sold at Rs. 6,000 while 17% GST has also been added to cotton seed.
He further said that maize production had increased three times but its rates have declined causing major loss to the farming community. “This situation may result in distrust between the government and the farming community”, he said and added that farmers would not sow these crops next season.
He said that 40% of children had stunted growth due to the acute shortage of protein. “The government had banned import of soybean without considering its ill impacts”, he said and added that it resulted in increasing the price of chicken which is the cheapest source of protein in Pakistan. He said that the government should encourage local production of soybeans before taking such drastic steps.
He also expressed concern over the human quality index in Pakistan only due to the inappropriate policies and strategies. He highlighted the role of the FCCI in the social sector and said that all major industrial units were paying salaries to their workers according to the minimum wage board award while additional facilities were also being provided.
He said that the SME sector was badly affected by inflation and was unable to pay salaries to it workers at the fixed rates. About the CPEC, Dr Sajjad Arshad said that China had recently reduced duties on 313 items which would help Pakistan export these products to China and enhance the overall quantum of Pakistani exports.
He said that Pakistani exporters could not introduce their own brands as it was capital intensive and long-term investment. He said that due to this reason Pakistan could neither introduce its brands nor develop any breed.
Responding to a question, he said that the FCCI was not getting any funding or grant from the government. “We are generating our own funds from the membership, renewal and issuance of visa recommendation letters etc”, he said and added that the FCCI had approximately 9,000 members who represent 118 sectors and bisectors of economy.
Earlier, Mr. Ziaullah Shams, Directing Staff NIM Peshawar, thanked the FCCI for hosting the fruitful meeting as it would help the government offices understand the economic pulse of the FCCI.
Later, Dr Sajjad Arshad and Mr. Ziaullah Shams exchanged shields while Mr. Shams also recorded his impressions in the FCCI visitors’ book.

Naqvi visits Mayo Hospital

LAHORE, Jan 12 (APP):Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed to install appropriate-sized signboards for the convenience of patients and their attendants at Mayo Hospital, during an inspection of the upgradation of the hospital’s emergency block, which is in its final stage on Friday.
He further directed that the finishing touches should be completed expeditiously with high standards. The CM also emphasized the need for the timely completion of all tasks while maintaining the quality of work. The KEMU principal was also present.
