UN envoy warns against demolition of Palestinian Bedouin village

0

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 16 (APP):The UN Mideast envoy Nickolay Mladenov warned Sunday that the razing of a Palestinian Bedouin village in the Israeli-occupied West Bank is a violation of international law and would undermine efforts to forge peace in the region.
“I am concerned about the intention of Israeli authorities to demolish the Bedouin village of Al-Khan A-Ahmar, a community of 181 people, over half of whom are children,” Mladenov, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, said, while urging Israel to halt its plans “and cease efforts to relocate Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank.”
He said in a press statement that “such actions are contrary to international law and could undermine the chances for the establishment of a viable, contiguous Palestinian state.”
On Wednesday, Israeli High Court cleared the way for the demolition of Khan al-Ahmar, rejecting a final appeal in a case that has drawn international criticism.
Khan al-Ahmar is one of 18 Bedouin communities the UN considers being at risk of forcible transfer because they are located in or next to an area near East Jerusalem slated by Israel for Jewish settlement construction. The settlements are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.
