Developing countries facing education crisis in areas of equity, quality & relevance: Pakistan

0

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 12 (APP):Pakistan has called for transforming education to cater to the needs of the young and growing population, especially in the developing countries, in an effort to achieve quality education for all by 2030.

“Along with the triple economic crisis of finance, fuel and food, the developing countries are also facing a triple crisis in education – of equity, quality and relevance,” Ambassador Munir Akram told the 56th session of the Commission on Population and Development which is taking place against the backdrop of a global learning crisis.

In this regard, the Pakistani envoy underscored the need for addressing — on an urgent basis — the factors leading to the denial of the right to education of children and youth, such as conflict, poverty, malnutrition, access to the internet and gender digital divide.

Also, Ambassador Akram said that millions of children and youth living in situations of conflict and foreign occupation must not be forgotten and deprived of their fundamental right to education and development, as also those with disabilities, migrants and other vulnerable groups.

“The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals cannot be achieved, at the national and international level, without transforming education to cater to the needs of the young and growing population, especially in the developing countries,” he added.

To achieve those goals, the Pakistani envoy urged the world’s nations, singly and collectively, to ensure universal access to quality education at all levels.

Investments in education was also needed to create awareness of environment and sustainable development and the demographic trends that impinge on the scarce resources, he said.

Lifelong learning should be made available across the age range, especially in developing countries, enhancing their employment prospects by teaching transferable skills, Ambassador Akram said.

The international community, he said, should provide technical and financial assistance for population data collection to developing countries, as financing was critical in bridging the digital and resource divide to deal with the education emergency.

“The most important investment in creating a peaceful and inclusive world’s education – where every child, without discrimination, has equitable access to basic and quality education,” Ambassador Akram said, adding, “This must be a key priority for all our nations, acting individually and collectively.”

Highlighting the transformative potential of education for individuals and their societies, Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), asked delegates to “imagine a girl standing at a fork in the road.”

If she is able to stay in school, she’s well set on a path of lifelong health and well-being, but if she is forced to drop out of school, to marry as a child or if she becomes pregnant while still a child herself, she will face a cascade of challenges that jeopardize not only her health and well-being but also her society’s prospects for prosperity.

“UNFPA knows this girl,” she added, underscoring that better-educated women are healthier, marry later and are more likely to plan the number and spacing of children.

Education also reduces the likelihood of harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation and lowers risk of gender-based violence.

Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, drawing attention to the plight of Afghan women and girls, called on the de facto authorities in Afghanistan to reverse the bans on education and employment.

Noting that progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 (quality education) is “seriously off track”, Ms.Mohammed voiced concern about the 263 million children and youth out of school.

Moreover, many of those in school are not learning, she observed, adding that nearly 70 per cent of children in poorer countries are unable to understand a basic text by age 10, many due to the effects of poverty and malnutrition.

UN ask Afghan staff to stay home after Taliban ban women from working with organization

0

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 11 (APP): The United Nations has launched an operational review in Afghanistan, and told national staff to remain at home, following the decision by the Taliban de facto authorities to ban Afghan women from working with the Organization.

“UN national personnel – women and men – have been instructed not to report to UN offices, with only limited and calibrated exceptions made for critical tasks,” according to a statement issued on Tuesday by its office in Kabul.

The ban is the latest in a series of discriminatory measures that restrict Afghan women and girls from participating in most areas of public and daily life, implemented in the wake of the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.

Asked about the move to instruct Afghan nationals to work from home, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the organization was concerned about their security, but said that they would continue to be paid.

Earlier, the UN underlined its “unequivocal condemnation” of the move, saying it contravenes international law, including the UN Charter, the Organization’s founding document.

“Through this ban, the Taliban de facto authorities seek to force the United Nations into having to make an appalling choice between staying and delivering in support of the Afghan people and standing by the norms and principles we are duty-bound to uphold,” the statement said.

“It should be clear that any negative consequences of this crisis for the Afghan people will be the responsibility of the de facto authorities.”

The statement announced that the UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, who also heads its Mission in the country, UNAMA, has initiated an operational review period up to 5 May.

“During this period, the UN in Afghanistan will conduct the necessary consultations, make required operational adjustments, and accelerate contingency planning for all possible outcomes,” it said.

The UN said it will “maintain principled and constructive engagement with all possible levels of the Taliban de facto authorities, as mandated by the United Nations Security Council.”

The Organization will also work to continue lifesaving and time-critical humanitarian activities “during which we will assess the scope, parameters and consequences of the ban, and pause activities where impeded.”

ISLAMABAD, Apr 11 (APP):The International Palestine Conference on Tuesday called for convening an Islamic Foreign Ministers (FMs) moot for devising a joint strategy against ongoing Zionist atrocities against the people of Palestine in genera and Israeli forces’ barbarism on worshipers, children and women in Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular.

The world was seeing that Israel’s assertion and claim of invincibility were waning, and the Muslims through the foreign ministers conference should raise a voice of protest against the Zionist barbarism, the speakers at the “International Quds Conference: Falestini Mazloom aur Dalair Awam ki Himayat” stressed.

The conference, held at the National Press Club Islamabad in collaboration with the Cultural Consulate of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was addressed by Syed Ali Abbas Naqvi, Tanveez Haider, Mufti Ahlus Sunnat Syed Jahangir, Nasir Abbas Shirazi, Leader Shia Ulema Council Jafar Naqvi, Secretary General Shia Ulema Council Arif Hussain Wahidi, Mufti Amjad Abbas, Senator Talha Mehmood, Member of Ideological Council Allama Iftikhar Naqvi , Iranian Ambassador Seyyed Ali Hosseini and others.

Federal Minister Safron Senator Talha Mehmood said peace could not be maintained in the world by disrespecting humanity and violating human rights.

“Conspiracies are being made to trap Pakistan, the fifth largest country in the world in terms of population, into an economic crisis. The solution to the problems of the Muslim Ummah lies in their unity,” he added.

Senator Talha said those who called themselves champions of human rights saw human rights violations in Ukraine, East Taimur, but “they do not see human rights atrocities committed by Israelis in Palestine and Indians in Kashmir”.

Member of Ideological Council Allama Iftikhar Hussain Naqvi said Pakistan needed to review its foreign policy.

“Pakistan should immediately call a conference of Islamic countries to resolve the issues of Palestine and Kashmir and expose the Israeli atrocities before the world,” he added.

He said undoubtedly, Palestine was the first and the most important issue in the Islamic world. “Although Al-Quds Day has special significance to Palestine and the Palestinian cause, beyond that, it is the axis of unity and integration of the Islamic world. It is the day of unity of Muslim countries in fighting against oppression, massacre and occupation.”

He said the Quds day was an opportunity for the world to remember more than 70 years of oppression of the displaced Palestinian nation and to renew the commitments regarding the formation of an independent Palestinian state based on the principle of self-determination

He said both Iran and Pakistan were committed to protecting Palestinian rights and the two brotherly countries shared a close position on the issue of Palestine and Quds.

“The Quds Day is a growing global campaign to condemn violence, massacre and discrimination, to assert the rights of the Palestinian people, and to defend the right to self-determination,” he added.
