Rehmani condemns killing of lawmaker, brother in UP, India

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): Jammu and Kashmir People’s Freedom League Chairman Muhammad Farooq Rehmani has condemned the live TV murder of four-time lawmaker Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad in Uttar Pradesh, India, where police failed to protect them amidst reports of anti-Muslim violence.

The attacker allegedly shouted anti-Muslim slogans while the brothers were handcuffed and the police failed to protect them during a medical check-up in broad daylight.

Rehmani expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of anti-Muslim violence in India and warned of a humanitarian crisis if the world fails to act. He urged immediate intervention to stop the slaughter of Indian Muslims.
He stated that Indian Muslims were being slaughtered like animals in their own homeland by the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) gangs without any intervention from the international community. Rehmani added that the only fault of Indian Muslims was their belief in Islam, and “this was being used to justify their persecution”.

Moreover, he highlighted that while in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Kashmiris were being targeted for demanding the right of self-determination, the demographic changes were being made to alter the Muslim majority character of the state. Rehmani warned that such atrocities could lead to a severe humanitarian crisis and urged the world community to take immediate action to stop the ongoing violence against Indian Muslims.

Commenting on the 2019 Pulwama attack, he stated that the revelations made by Satya Pal Malik, former governor of IIOJK, had vindicated Pakistan’s stance and confirmed that the attack was a part of the terrorism bogey used to enact fake encounters against the youth of Kashmir.

Rehmani accused India of violating promises made with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and international humanitarian law, as well as failing to protect the rights of Indian Muslims according to the Nehru-Liaqat Pact.

Rehmani demanded that members and sympathizers of the RSS should not be permitted to enter Kashmir under any circumstances, given the alarming state of affairs in India. He expressed concern that the RSS gangs, with the support of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, could carry out large-scale killing sprees in the region.

Climate change impacts turn food self-sufficient Pakistan into deficient nation: Munir Akram

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 18 (APP):Climate change is adversely affecting Pakistan’s agricultural production, making the food self-sufficient country into a deficient one, Ambassador Munir Akram told a UN event on Monday

“This is obviously one of the critical impacts of the poly-crises we have been facing during the past three years,” the Pakistani envoy said during a discussion organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on ways to bring the role of finance for development to mitigating and preventing food crises and promoting food systems transformation.

Among other speakers were FAO’s Chief Economist Maximo Torero, who joined the event virtually from Rome, and its co-organizers — El Salvador’s Ambassador Egriselda Aracely Gonzalez-Lopez and Ethiopian Ambassador Tesfaye Yila Sabo.

Outlining Pakistan’s case, Ambassador Akram said the country was almost food sufficient, with agriculture accounting for 38 percent of the labour force, contributing 22.7 percent to GDP in 2021–22.

“Yet, because of climate change, there has been a steady deterioration in our ability to produce,” the Pakistani envoy said, pointing out that his country suffered one of the worst climate crises last year — a spring heatwave shriveled harvests, followed by unprecedented summer floods drowning them.

“The floods inundated 4.4 million acres of standing crops,” he said, adding, “From food self-sufficient we became deficient without the ability to plant for the next season due to the standing water.”

Having suffered such massive impacts, the Pakistani envoy said Pakistan could not qualify for any of the international criteria for support.

“We found to our shock, we are not eligible for the food shock window nor for the PRGT (Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust)”, he said. “Our negotiations with the IMF have dragged on for months and months for reasons…”

In this regard, Ambassador Akram agreed with UN Secretary-General’s conclusion that the financial system was “morally bankrupt”.

“People are suffering from exogenous shocks, yet they are not being able to gain access to support,” he said, highlighting the fact that there is something wrong with the system that we must seek to correct.”

Dialogue only way in Parliamentary democracy to deal any crisis: Sanaullah

0

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): Federal Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah on Monday endorsed the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) vision saying that dialogue was the only way in Parliamentary democracy to deal with any kind of crisis.

Speaking along side PPP leaders Yusuf Raza Gillani, Minister for Commerce Naveed Qamar, Adviser to PM on Kashmir Affairs Qamar Zaman Kaira and PML-N leader Ayaz Sadiq here, he said the politics of ego has brought this country into crisis.

Rana Sanaullah said the crisis have so aggravated that the two supreme institutions of the country have come to face off each other which was not good as it would drag the country into further crisis.

“Therefore it is the responsibility and demand of patriotism of all political parties to take the country out of crisis through dialogues,” he said.

The minister lauded PPP on their efforts to sort out matters through dialogue saying “our party has always taught us to respect the difference of opinion but different circumstances were created in the country after 2014 which led to bitterness in behaviours.”

Referring to PTI’s resistance to talks with the coalition parties, he said our party also avoided going into dialogue after that as we had to hear abusive language in return from the other side.

So under these circumstances PPP has taken a superb step and this was the only way to take the country out of crisis by sitting together and having a dialogue.
