Pak-Saudi investment conference to be held on Monday

ISLAMABAD, May 5 (APP): Two day Pakistan-Saudi Arabia investment conference will begin here Monday to promote bilateral trade and investment, besides fostering a new era of growth and prosperity for the people of both the countries.

A 50-member high-level business delegation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is also visiting Pakistan from May 5 to explore investment opportunities in different sectors as well as to forge strong bonds with local entrepreneurs.

Some 30 Saudi companies representing different economic sectors, including information technology, telecoms, energy, aviation, construction, mining exploration, agriculture and human resource development would be part of the delegation, which would be led by the Assistant Minister of Investment, a Ministry of Commerce official said on Sunday.

The ministry had selected a large number of Pakistani companies in the respective sectors whose officials would have business-to-business meetings with their Saudi counterparts, and would hopefully enter into business and investment deals, he added.

He said that Saudi Arabia was an oil-based economy with strong government controls over major economic activities, however, it was now undergoing a transformation to reduce oil dependence, diversify income sources and enhance competitiveness under the Vision 2030.

Currently, he said, the major exports of the Kingdom included mineral fuels, mineral oils, plastics and organic chemicals, whereas it was importing machinery, vehicles, and agricultural products.

The official said that during the first half of the current financial year, bilateral trade between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia was recorded at $2,482.37 million, with Pakistan’s exports of $262.58 million and Saudi exports of $2.219 billion.

He said Pakistan’s major to the KSA consisted of rice, meat of bovine animals, fruits and vegetables, and tents and camping goods, whereas imports were petroleum products, and polymers of propylene and ethylene.

The official said Pakistan and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) had agreed on a Free-Trade Agreement. Pakistan, he added, was also planning to organize a Single Country Exhibition and Lifestyle Show in Saudi Arabia.

He said that Pakistan would welcome and fully facilitate investments and partnerships from Saudi Arabia in IT, minerals, textiles, food security, engineering and energy sectors.

HRCP expresses concern over journalist’s killing in Balochistan

QUETTA, May 05 (APP):The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Balochistan Chapter on Sunday expressed concern over the journalist’s killing in Balochistan.
A statement issued here said HRCP is appalled by the apparent targeted killing of Khuzdar Press Club president Muhammad Siddique Mengal in a car bomb attack that had left two others dead and several injured – ironically enough on World Press Freedom Day.
In a province where journalists already work under immense pressure and at risk to themselves, this attack is bound to have a chilling effect on the media, with many working journalists having migrated from Khuzdar out of fear, according to accounts shared with HRCP.
HRCP statement further urged that the attackers must be brought to book swiftly.
Balochistan must also urgently enact laws protecting journalists’ safety and establish a safety commission to ensure that perpetrators of such attacks are held to account, it maintained.

91 power pilferers nabbed during in a day in South Punjab

MULTAN, May 05 (APP):Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) teams caught 91 power pilferers during separate operations launched throughout the South Punjab in a day.
According to the official sources, MEPCO teams accompanying task forces launched a special crackdown against power pilferers to minimize line losses and to prevent power theft across the region. During the crackdown in the last 24 hours, the teams raided different places in Multan, Vehari, Sahiwal, Rahimyar Khan, Muzaffargarh,  Bahawalnagar, Khanewal, and DG Khan and nabbed 91 power pilferers and registered FIRs against 65.
A sum of over Rs 5.9 million fine was imposed on the pilferers out of which Rs over Rs 5,00,000 also recovered from the pilferers.

SNGPL disconnects 12 connections of gas pilferers

MULTAN, May 05 (APP):Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) teams took action against twelve more gas pilferers and disconnected their connections.
According to the details, a customer was found using a household meter for a generator and hospital machinery at Amin Hospital Burewala, on which the task force team disconnected his meter.  Likewise, five connections of consumers were removed in Burewala for being illegally installed far away from the required distance.
The task force teams launched operation clean up in Ailampur, Multan against the compressor users in the entire area disconnected connections of two consumers for compressor use and also removed illegal extensions from four metres in the same area.
The gas pressure in some streets of the area improved after operation clean up on which operation in-charge Jameel Rasheed hailed the performance of the task force teams.

Security arrangements for ongoing anti-polio drive reviewed in Tank

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, May 05 (APP):Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rural Tank Sharif Ullah Khan Kundi here on Sunday visited different Chowkis and other points to review the security arrangements made in connection with the ongoing anti-polio drive.
The DSP paid this visit following the instructions of District Police Officer (DPO) Abdul Salam Khalid to ensure safety of people’s lives and property.
During the visit, the DSP inspected the alertness and weapons of personnel, police pickets and CCTV cameras.
He directed the on-duty officers and personnel to further improve the security arrangements, saying, the protection of people’s lives and property was the prime responsibility of the police. So no negligence would be tolerated in this regard, he warned.
Moreover, he advised them to adopt all safety measures for self-protection including use of bullet-proof jackets and helmets. Besides, he said, the on-duty policemen should avoid use of mobile phones and keep a close eye on all suspects around them.

LESCO detects 77,055 power pilferers in 227 days

LAHORE, May 05 (APP):Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has detected a total of 77,055 connections from where the customers were pilfering electricity in all its circles of five districts (Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur and Okara) in 227 days of grand anti-power theft campaign.
The LESCO spokesman told media here Sunday that the company has also submitted FIR applications against electricity thieves, out of which 72,494 FIRs have been registered in respective police stations, while 30,434 accused have been arrested. The LESCO has so far charged a total of 92,008,163 detection units worth Rs 3,409,932,500 to all the power pilferers.
Grand anti-power theft operations against electricity thieves are being conducted on the directives of the Federal Power Division and the LESCO Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Engineer Shahid Haider is supervising these operations. The LESCO chief vowed that the operations would continue without discrimination until the complete end of electricity theft. The electricity pilferers as well as the LESCO officers and employees who facilitate them are also being brought to justice.
The spokesman added, the LESCO found 363 customers stealing electricity through various means and 121 cases have been registered against the accused, while 05 accused were arrested during the last 24 hours.
On the 227th consecutive day of the anti-power theft campaign, he mentioned that large commercial consumers were found involved in electricity theft and all of them were also disconnected and charged with detection units. Among the seized connections, he explained, 11 were commercial, 01 agricultural and 351 domestic, and all these connections were disconnected and charged with a total of 248,063 units as detection bill amounting to Rs 6.165 million.
Apprising the media about some major power pilferers, he mentioned that LESCO charged Rs 606,000 detection  bill to an electricity pilferer in Qila Gujjarpura Singh area; Rs 120,000 detection bill to another power pilferer in Ittehad Park,  Rs 120,000 fine in the form of detection bill to a customer stealing electricity in Naeem Park area and Rs 120,000 fine to a power pilferer in Shahdara Town.

Sheikh Jaffar Mandokhail to sworn in as Governor Balochistan tomorrow

QUETTA, May 05 (APP): Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Balohistan President Sheikh Jaffar Mandokhail will sworn in as Governor Balochistan tomorrow, said a handout issued by Governor House on Sunday.
A graceful oath taking ceremony regarding the new Governor Balochistan to be held in Governor House on Monday (tomorrow) at 11:00 a.m. sharp.
The Chief Justice Balochistan High Court Hashim Khan Kakar will administer the oath to Sheikh Jaffar Mandokhail.
CM Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugti, Parliamentarians, Chief Secretary Balochistan, Provincial Secretaries and political figures are expected to be present in the ceremony, the handout further read.

Sharjeel vows to put transport sector on its feet, says Red Line to have Pakistan’s 1st biogas buses

KARACHI, May 05 (APP): Senior Sindh Minister for Information, Transport & Mass Transit and Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Sharjeel Inam Memon on Sunday pledged to put the transport sector of the Sindh province including Karachi on its feet to facilitate the general public.

While talking to media persons during his visit to the BRT Red Line site, he said that the Sindh government had started work on Red Line BRT once again, He said that the government would not leave any stone unturned to complete the project. Memon said that the Red Line project was delayed due to the utility services, which were being shifted and on the part of the provincial government there would not be even a delay of a single day in its completion.

The minister said that the BRT Red Line project was an important project of the PPP-led Sindh government. He said that the resolution to the problems of the people was a top priority of the present government.

He said that the Sindh government was seriously working on all projects and intended to complete them on time.

Replying to a question, he said that the infrastructure of the buses cost more than the buses.

He excused the university students for facing problems due to the project. He said that the PPP-led government performed practically instead of only paying lip service.

Replying to another question, he said that some issues were being faced in the operation of People’s Bus Service due to the load shedding of electricity by K-E and the power entity had been asked to resolve the matter.

Replying to another question, he said that it did not mean that if PPP was not in the federal government it would create obstacles. He said that PPP would stand shoulder to shoulder with the government or opposition, whoever works in the better interest and development of the country.

Answering a question, he said that May 9 was the darkest and worst day in the history of the country.
