Int’l workshop on `Drug Design and Development’ from May 20-22

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP): COMSTECH- the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation will hold an International Workshop on “Drug Design and Development: The Arts and Science” from May 20-22.
COMSTECH Distinguished Scholar, Dr. M. Hafizur Rahman, PhD (Japan) will be the Course Instructor of the workshop to be held at the COMSTECH Secretariat, an official of COMSTECH informed.
Dr. Hafizur Rahman is Professor and Chairman, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dhaka International University, Dhaka, Bangladesh and Ex-Fellow, BIRDEM, MEXT Fellow, Japan.
The intersection of art and science in Drug Design and Development represents an attractive frontier in pharmaceutical research. To explore this dynamic relationship and its implications for therapeutic innovation, we are delighted to announce our upcoming workshop on “Drug Design and Development: The Arts and Science.”
The official conveyed that this workshop aims to probe into the mutual interchange between creativity and scientific research in the quest for novel therapeutics.
The workshop will feature keynote presentations by Dr Hafiz ur Rahman and interactive discussions. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research, network with peers, and gain insights into emerging trends shaping the future of drug discovery.
Professor Dr. Hafizur Rahman has a long association with COMSTECH and ICCBS, University of Karachi.
Through a collaboration between BIRDEM (Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders) and ICCBS, he came to ICCBS and successfully established a “Molecular Diabetology Laboratory” at PCMD and expanded his expertise in the development of diabetic models in rats and used these models for different research projects.
He also trained researchers from home and abroad in the field of anti-diabetic drug discovery. He also established the mice islets isolation setup at PCMD for the first time in Pakistan, and identified several novel insulin secretagogues and explored their mechanisms. Currently, Dr. Hafizur Rahmanis working as a Professor in Dhaka International University, Bangladesh.
He has more than 60 publications in international journals. He also received MEXT fellowship from Japan for the PhD program and has been awarded several research grants.
He has a wonderful connection with researchers of few Japanese Universities, and received MIN6 cells as a Gift from Osaka University, Japan for PCMD, ICCBS, University of Karachi, Pakistan. Recently, Dr. Hafiz was awarded “COMSTECH Distinguished Scholar” title.

IRSA releases 141,800 cusecs water

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP):Indus River System Authority (IRSA) on Monday released 141,800 cusecs water from various rim stations with inflow of 179,700 cusecs.
According to the data released by IRSA, water level in River Indus at Tarbela Dam was 1465.79 feet and was 51.79 feet higher than its dead level of 1,398 feet. Water inflow and outflow in the dam was recorded as 34,400 cusecs and 20,000 cusecs respectively.
The water level in River Jhelum at Mangla Dam was 1166.00 feet, which was 116.00 feet higher than its dead level of 1,050 feet. The inflow and outflow of water was recorded 58,500 cusecs and 35,000 cusecs respectively.
The release of water at Kalabagh, Taunsa , Guddu and Sukkur was recorded as 72,500, 59,300, 45,100 and 10,200 cusecs respectively. Similarly, from River Kabul, a total of 64,500 cusecs of water released at Nowshera and 13,100 cusecs released from River Chenab at Marala.

Pakistan’s sesame seeds export to China increases nearly 29% in Q1 2024

BEIJING, May 6 (APP): Pakistan’s Sesame seeds export to China crossed $10.37 million from January to March of 2024, showing a growth of around 29% year-on-year.

According to the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC), data Pakistan exported 6137.044 tons of Sesame seeds from Pakistan in January-March 2024, worth $10.37 million an increase of 28.81% while last year in the same period it was $8.16 million.

Rakesh Pal Khamuani, Director of Export & BD Kanwal Trading Company (Pvt) Ltd Pakistan told the China Economic Net Pakistan had reached $375 million in exports of sesame seeds in the last 8 months of the fiscal year and it had the potential to grow more, adding that the free trade agreement (FTA) with China helped to increase the export of sesame seeds which had been beneficial for both the countries.

” China will always have a quick transit advantage from Pakistan. This year’s estimated average price is $1750. Punjab province’s estimated harvest was 75% of the total sesame seeds crop contributing about 170,000 MT. Sindh province estimated harvest was 25% of the total sesame seeds crop contributing about 55,000 MT. Punjab produces Farmi, Hybrid, and Black brown varieties. Sindh produces Mix and Desi varieties,” he added.

He thinks Pakistan’s crop this year is excellent and the total sesame production should surpass 225,000 MT.

Sesame seed harvests in Pakistan have never been greater, with an average output of 400 kg per acre expected.

Rs 520m released for schemes of Wasa

FAISALABAD, May 06 (APP):As many as Rs 520 million was released for completing ongoing water supply and drainage
schemes of the Water & Sanitation Agency (Wasa) in Faisalabad.
A spokesman for the agency said on Monday that Rs100 million would be spent on main
schemes while Rs 233.2 million would be used for enhancing capacity of disposal stations.
Similarly, Rs 135.7 million would be spent on de-silting and rehabilitation of drainage
channels, he added.

President due in Quetta today on maiden official visit

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari is scheduled to visit Quetta today on a maiden official trip to Balochistan after assuming office.

During the visit, the president will be given briefings about the law and order as well as the development projects in the province, according to a President House press release.

President Zardari is also scheduled to interact with the newly elected Members of the Provincial Assembly.

Chief Minister of Balochistan Sarfaraz Bugti will also host a dinner reception in honor of the president.

CDA chief directs to repair MRI machine of Capital Hospital shortly

ISLAMABAD, May 06 (APP):Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad, Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Randhawa Monday directed to repair the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine of the Capital Hospital shortly and submit a detailed report.
During his surprise visit to the Capital Hospital, he emphasized the need for improvement in the sanitation system of the hospital.
Expressing dismay over cleanliness issues, Chairman CDA directed to improve the cleanliness issues of the Capital Hospital.
Muhammad Ali directed to further improve the medical facilities for the patients of the Capital Hospital.
Earlier, Chairman CDA also paid a visit to Rescue 1122 where he responded to a call on Rescue 1122, arranging for an ambulance.

Evening Mother’s Day: WCCI organizes evening with Bushra Ansari

MULTAN, May 06 (APP): Celebrated artist, comedian, singer and playwright, Bushar Ansari’s witty sentences, cracking jokes and cute remarks forced the audience to burst into laughter on Sunday night in an event held in connection with Mother’s Day.
Clad in green embroidered attire,  the artist shared the cherished memories she had with Multan in “An Evening with Bursha Ansari”  organized by Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry (WCCI) at a local complex.
Extempore discourse which is one of the skills she is blessed with as female comedian, compelled audience to big thunderous round of applause and again during the show.
She sang Fiaz Ahmed Faiz two ghazals  including “Mujhey sey pheli se mobhabut meray mehboob na maang and ‘Ranjish hi sahi dil tuk doukhany k leye aa’ besides Noor Jehan all times hit “Ja ja aj tun main teri, toun mera sajna vey” and a mimicry of Musarrat Nazir “Mera loung gawacha Nigha, nigha maar dain ain vey mera loung gawacha”.
Bushra Ansari scintillating performance as her known character “Saima Chaudhary’ with her daughter Dolly telepathically was amazing.
She informed that she has very much sweets memories with the city of saints as her maternal grandparents used to reside in Multan adding that she can never forget Multani mangoes.
Earlier, in her welcome address  president WCCI, Mahnaz Amir Sheikh, said that she was proud of her mother Farrukh Mukhtar who was a source of inspiration for her and a power behind her achievements in life.
She stated that WCCI always helped for capacity building entrepreneurs adding that it was need of the hour to make women economically empowered.
Among others, renowned industrialists, Faisal Mukhtar  Main Amir Naseem, Mian Kashif,  Fadia Kashif, Farah Faisal, Rahat Multanikr, Fatima Fazal, Sadia Ali, Mahmood Javed Bhatti, and a good number of families attended.

Three robbers arrested, weapons recovered

FAISALABAD, May 06 (APP):Thikriwala police on Monday claimed to have arrested three robbers and recovered cash,
mobile phones and weapons from their possession.
A police spokesman said police, on a tip-off, conducted a raid near Dinga Phattak and arrested
Adeel, Zahid and Naik who were wanted to police in a number of robbery and other cases.
Police also recovered cash, mobile phones, weapons and other items from their possession,
he added.

Randhawa directs to make Islamabad Model Jail operational in 100-day

ISLAMABAD, May 06 (APP):Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa Monday directed to make Islamabad Model Jail fully operational within 100-day.
While chairing a meeting on development and construction work of Islamabad Model Jail, he said that more delay in the construction work will not be tolerated.
Muhammad Ali said the construction work of the jail should be completed into three shifts.
During the briefing, he was informed that 73 percent of the administrative block, 98 percent of the boundary wall, and 42 percent of the male barracks have already been completed.
The meeting was attended by Inspector General of Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi and officials from the Public Works Department.
Muhammad Ali said that a site inspection is scheduled on May 8 (Wednesday) to evaluate the ongoing construction work at Islamabad Model Jail.
Syed Nasir Rizvi said that Chief Commissioner is a proactive officer and expressed confidence that under his leadership all longstanding issues of the federal capital will be addressed.

Musadik urges private sectors of Pakistan, SA to collaborate towards economic diversification, value addition

ISLAMABAD, May 06 (APP):Federal Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik Monday urged the private sectors of both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia (SA) to collaborate towards economic diversification and value addition.
Addressing a Two-Day Pakistan-Saudi Arabia Investment Conference, he said, “We invite the private sectors of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to participate in building critical infrastructure to unlock the assets and wealth potential of both countries.”
“We are already exporting food products, but unfortunately, around 35% of Pakistani perishable food products go to waste. We aim to connect our agricultural assets to the food security needs of the GCC,” he said.
The Minister said that Saudi Arabia wanted to become a food corridor for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and called for joint efforts to address challenges such as food wastage, proposed that Pakistan’s agricultural assets be leveraged to enhance food security not only in Saudi Arabia but across the GCC and beyond.
He underscored the conference’s focus on private sector engagement, particularly in food and agriculture, urging investments in downstream activities like food processing and value-added industries such as fruit, juice, cheese, and meat production for international markets.
He described the conference as an opportunity for investors from both countries to establish relationships and explore collaborations, highlighting Pakistan’s interest in participating in religious and family tourism.
He called for integrated tourism experiences, including luxury hotels and ski resorts in northern Pakistan, inviting collaboration between private sector entities from both countries to develop these ventures.
He emphasized the shared visions of economic prosperity between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, praising Saudi Arabia’s ambitious transformation and aligning it with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s economic vision.
He expressed Pakistan’s commitment to stability, infrastructure development, and economic diversification, inviting private sector investment in Saudi Arabia to foster collaboration and progress towards economic diversification and downstream value addition.
