PAL announces Rs. 5.2 millions awards for Pakistani writers, poets

ISLAMABAD, May 8 (APP):Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) on Wednesday announced nomination of Prominent writer, Hassan Manzar for Kamal-e-Fun Award for the years 2022.
Kamal-e-Fun Award is the highest literary award in the field of literature for recognition of lifetime’s achievement in creative and research work.
The amount of this award is Rs. 1,000,000/- . The panel of judges consisted of well-known writers and scholars including Munir Ahmad Badini, Dr. Moeen ud Din Aqeel, Dr. Salma Shaheen, Dr. Abdul Razzaq Sabir, Sarwat Mohyuddin, Riffat Abbass, Yousuf Hussain Abadi, Mubeen Mirza, Dr. Khalid Mahmood Sanjrani, Dr. Rubina Shaheen, Dr. Amjad Tufail, Bushra Farrukh, Haris Khalique, Farrukh Yaar Khan and Akhtar Dargahi met here today.
The meeting, held at the office of PAL, was presided by Munir Ahmad Badini. Chairperson, PAL, Dr. Najeeba Arif has also announced the National Literary Awards for the year 2022, given on the best literary books written during the year 2022 in Urdu and other Pakistani languages during a press conference held here.
According to the decision of the panel, for Urdu Prose (Creative Literature) Saadat Hasan Manto Award is given to Ahmad Saleem  on his Book “Meri Dharti Mere Log” (Judges: Muhammad Hameed Shahid, Asghar Nadeem Syed and Khalid Fateh Muhammad).
For Urdu Prose (Criticism and Research), Baba-i-Urdu Molvi Abdul Haq Award is given to Dr. Aurangzeb Niazi on his book “Urdu Adab Maholiati Tanazur” (Judges: Dr. Moeen ud Din Aqeel, Dr. Khalid Iqbal Yasir and Dr. Nasir Abbass Nayyar).
For Urdu Poetry, Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal Award is given to  Qamar Raza Shahzad on his book “Dar Guzar” (Judges: Prof. Jaleel Aali, Dr. Ehsan Akbar and Dr. Zia ul Hassan) while for Punjabi Poetry, Syed Waris Shah Award is given to Ghulam Hussain Sajid on his book “Kun De Gunn” for Punjabi Prose Afzal Ahsan Randhawa Award is given to Nain Sukh on his book “Waba Te Waseb” (Judges: Dr. Inam ul Haq Javid, Dr. Moeen Nizami and Dr. Sughra Sadaf).
For Sindhi Poetry, Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai Award is given to Imdad Hussaini on his book “Zard Matti” and for Sindhi Prose Mirza Qaleech Baig Award is given to Manzoor Kohiar on his book “Denok 109” and Dr. Fayaz Latif on his book “Shaikh Ayaz Je Shairee Jee Lughat” (Judges: Taj Joyo, Akhtar Dargahi and Dr. Muhammad Ishaq Samejo).
For Pushto Poetry,  Khushhal Khan Khattak Award is given to Ismail Gauhar on his book “Ghazal o Ghazal” and for Pushto Prose Muhammad Ajmal Khan Khattak Award is given to Aseer Mangal on his book “Tarla  Da Tarbor Vee” (Judges: Dr. Salma Shaheen, Dr. Khalil Bawar and Dr, Hanif Khalil).
For Balochi Prose, Syed Zahoor Shah Hashmi Award is given to Yousuf Gichki on his book “ Tarangani Johan” and for Balochi  Poetry Mast Tawakli Award is given to Mubarak Qazi on his book “ Gas e Watarkang Lotan” (Judges: Munir Ahmad Badin, Dr. Abdul Saboor Baloch and Dr. Zia ur Rehman Baloch).
For Seraiki Poetry Khwaja Ghulam Fareed Award is given to Iqbal Babar on his book “Saroop” and for Seraiki Prose, Dr. Maher Abdul Haq Award is given to Hafeez Khan on his book “Marma Jeewan Dee” (Judges: Dr. Nasrullah Khan Nasir, Ms. Musarat Kalanchvi and Rifat Abbass).
For Brahui Poetry, Taj Muhammad Tajal Award is given to Maher Zahid Nalvi on his book “Qab-e-Qausain” for Brahui Prose Ghulam Nabi Rahi Award is given to Zauq Brahui on his book “Mir Noor Muhammad Mengal: Zindo Kirdar” (Judges: Dr. Abdul Razzaq Sabir, Mir Salahuddin Mengal and Noor Khan Muhammad Hasni), for Hindko Poetry Saeen Ahmad Ali Award is given to  Sajid Sarhadi on his book “Piyar Dee Dewe”, for Hindko Prose Khatir Ghaznavi Award is given to Gul Arbab on her Book “Chuni Naal Baheni Kahanian”.
For English Prose Pitras Bukhari Award is given to Kamils Shamsie on her book “Best Friends”, for English Poetry Daud Kamal Award is given to Ejaz Rahim on his Book “Charli Hebdo and Other Poems” for Translation Muhammad Hasan Askari Award is given to Yasmeen Hameed on her book “Junoobi Asia Kee Muntakheb Nazmein” (Judges: Dr. Rauf Parekh, Salman Basit, Dr. Iqbal Afaqi).
The award money Rs. 200,000/- will be given to each winner for the National Literary Award 2022.

Temperature surges to 46 C in Bahawalpur

BAHAWALPUR, May 08 (APP):Bahawalpur and adjoining areas have faced very hot weather and heat wave as mercury jumped to 43 centigrade.
The local Met Office has forecast a dry and hot weather for city for next 24 hours.
 The highest maximum temperature 45 centigrade and the lowest minimum 28 centigrade were recorded during last 24 hours.
The dry and very hot weather has also been forecast for rest of the region.

Senator Raisani donates 200 books to Qaid Library

QUETTA, May 08 (APP): Former Senator and Tribal Chief Haji Lashkari Raisani generously announced to donate 200 books to the recently restored Qaid-e-Azam Library Ziarat, which had been closed for 17 years.

Talking to APP, the senator Lashkari lauded the efforts of Deputy Commissioner Ziarat Hamood-ur-Rehman for restoring the historic library in its original architecture.

“To support the cause, Balochistan Peace Forum will send 200 books for the bibliophiles,” he remarked.

He said that under his supervision, Balochistan Peace Forum has been formed that strives for revising the book reading culture in the country.

“So far, as many as 75000 books have been gifted to different institutions and libraries, with ongoing efforts to continue this initiative.

Expressing concern over the decline of book reading culture in society, Senator Raisani urged the youth to embrace knowledge for its intrinsic value, rather than merely pursuing degrees.

He lamented the prioritization of arms dealing over intellectual pursuits, emphasizing the societal consequences of neglecting libraries.

Reflecting on the significance of books, he invoked the Quran as a divine example. “The Almighty bestowed his prophet with the gift of book “Quran” that reflects the importance of the book,”

He referred to his father Nawab Ghaus Baksh Raisani, the former governor Balohchistan’s love for books as saying thousands of people benefited from his knowledge.

Contrasting the reading habits of past and present political leaders, he highlighted the need to reverse the trend of declining readership to safeguard the fabric of society.

The leader in past used to read books whereas the only books known to today’s political leaders is book of PSDP that contains details of uplift schemes.

Due to dying trend of book reading, the vary fabrics of our society is denting alarmingly, he warned.

Chairman Senate Gilani promises increase in funds for South Punjab

MULTAN, May 08 (APP):Former Prime Minister and Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said that funds for uplift of south Punjab would be increased with collaboration of provincial and federal governments.
He said this while talking to different delegations at South Punjab Secretariat. Senate Chairman Syed Yusuf Raza expressed that his efforts for the development of the region were evident to all.
“We endeavor to secure definite additions in the budget for development funds for South Punjab in coordination with the federal and provincial governments, so that the sense of deprivation among the people can be eliminated”, he remarked.
The delegations, led by prominent figures including former Adviser to the Chief Minister of Punjab Malik Ishaaq Bucha, Haji Liaqat Bosan, Rana Ashique Noon, and Malik Aslam Mengana, also hailed the role of Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani for the development of the region. They acknowledged that the Gilani family had always prioritized the welfare of Multan city and its people by making practical efforts without any political affiliations.
Director Hajj Rehan Khokhar briefed the Senate Chairman on Hajj flights operations during another  meeting. The Chairman Senate directed the Director of Hajj to ensure provision of the best possible facilities to the pilgrims during Hajj operations.

World Asthma Day marks across northern Sindh

SUKKUR, May 08 (APP):World Asthma Day observed with theme of the day this year is ‘Asthma Education Empowers’ here on Wednesday.
In this connection various events and activities held across the northern Sindh to raise awareness about the disease and its management.
To mark World Asthma Day, hospitals and health organizations in Sukkur, Khairpur, Ghotki and other districts organized awareness events, free check-ups, and lung function tests for a chronic respiratory disease that affects over 340 million people globally.
Medical professionals used social media to share information and resources, and to encourage people to seek medical help if they are experiencing symptoms of asthma.
Dr Syed Najaf Ali Shah, a senior health expert at Government Khairpur Medical College Hospital emphasizing the need for greater awareness and education. “Asthma is a treatable condition, but it requires proper management and treatment,” he asserted.
Syed Najaf Ali Shah said by educating people about their condition, we can help them avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and improve their overall health.
In Sukkur an awareness walk was organised by Inter Global Human Development Society (IGHDS) to raise awareness about asthma, its management, and treatment, and to empower people with the knowledge they need to control their condition and lead healthy lives.

Anti-dengue surveillance geared up

LAHORE, May 08 (APP):The anti-dengue drive, initiated by the district administration, is in full swing under which surveillance is being carried out at various points in the provincial capital.
In this regard, Assistant Commissioner Model Town Sahibzada Yousaf on Wednesday visited Union Council UC-128, where he inspected anti-dengue arrangements and instructed the house owners about dengue preventive measures. He checked houses, empty plots and commercial markets of the area and assessed the close monitoring of dengue larvae elimination. He observed the attendance and performance of anti-dengue squad deputed on field duty in the area.
Similarly, Assistant Commissioner City Rai Baber visited UC-12 and 13 to inspect anti-dengue arrangements and assessed dengue surveillance and door marking in the area and instructed the area in-charges to complete their task in accordance with the micro plan. He directed the dengue teams deputed in the area to gear up pace of anti-dengue spray process.
AC Cantt Nabeel Memon inspected anti-dengue measures at UC-61 and reviewed the dengue case response. She visited the houses and inquired about dengue teams’ feedback from the residents. All other assistant commissioners also conducted inspection visits in their jurisdictions and monitored the anti-dengue arrangements besides monitoring the fumigation process. Dengue larvae were eliminated at 321 points during the last 24 hours, while 3,687 points were cleared during current year.
Lahore Deputy Commissioner Rafia Haider appealed to citizens to keep their surroundings clean and fresh to avoid dengue fever. People are requested not to let rainwater stand anywhere, she added.

IESCO secures 9,176 safety hazard points costing Rs 1.679 bln so far

ISLAMABAD, May 08 (APP):Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has secured 9176 safety hazard points costing Rs 1.679 billion so far in various circles of the company.
Being responsible and customer friendly company, IESCO cleared all the said points from its own budget told Chief Engineer Operations, Muhammad Aslam Khan.
He paid tribute to IESCO line staff for their tireless efforts to ensure smooth power supply to the consumers besides prompt redressal of customer electricity related complaints.
He also emphasized on the use of safety equipment and precautions during work on line.
He directed the line staff to use all safety gadgets and follow safety SOPs to avoid an unpleasant incident while working on transmission lines.
He also warned of strict departmental action against those who were not following safety SOPs.
The Chief Engineer said that they have much focused  on public safety and were clearing safety hazard points I.e. electric wire crossing close/above the house, weak and tilted poles, open distribution boxes.

Playback singer Akhlaq Ahmed remembered

ISLAMABAD, May 8 (APP):Famous playback singer Akhlaq Ahmed was remembered on his birth anniversary on Wednesday.
Born on May 8, 1946 in Delhi, Akhlaq Ahmed started as a stage singer in the 1960s in Karachi, when he was a member of a famous singing group with two other legendary artists Masood Rana and Nadeem. Akhlaq Ahmad was the third generation of top male playback singers in Pakistan film industry.
He struggled many years but shined in the 1970s as playback singer. “Sona na Chandi na koi Mehal” in film Bandish (1980) and “Sawan Aye Sawan jaye” in Chahat (1974), “Ae Dil, Apna Dard Chhupa Kar, Geet Khushi Kay Gaye Ja”‘ in film Pehchan (1975) and “Main Hun, Rastey Ka Pathar, Hay Naseeb Mera Thokar” in film  Rastay Ka Pathar (1976) were some his most super hit songs. His song tally is under hundred songs.
Akhlaq Ahmad suffered with a deadly disease of blood cancer and died on August 4, 1999 at London. His last film as a playback singer was Director Sangeeta’s Nikah (1998).

Rain along with thunderstorm predicted for weekend

LAHORE, May 08 (APP):The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted another rain along with dust-storm and thunderstorm for this week-end in most parts of the country including city, while day temperatures are likely to increase due to high pressure in the upper atmosphere in most parts of the country particularly in southern half of the country.
According to a spokesman for the PMD, a westerly wave is likely to enter western parts of the country on May 10 and likely to grip upper parts on the next day.
Under the influence of the weather system, day temperatures are likely to remain 3-5°C above normal till Friday. Rain-dust-storm/thunderstorm is expected in Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Pakpattan and Sahiwal from 10th of May to 12th. While, in Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan, Kot Addu, Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, Sadiqabad, Khanpur, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar on May 10-11. Hailstorm is also expected at isolated places during the period.
Farmers are advised to manage watering of crops and wheat harvesting accordingly, general public is advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight and windstorm/hailstorm and lightning may affect daily routines, standing crops, loose structures like electric poles, vehicles and solar panels etc during the period, the spokesman added.
