Ahsan Iqbal, Sun Weidong hold wide-ranging discussions to further solidify Pak-China All Weather friendship

BEIJING, May 8 (APP): Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal met with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, Sun Weidong here on Wednesday and held wide-ranging discussions, aimed at even further solidifying the “All Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership.”

Discussions also included a review of successful culmination of the first decade of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and the progress achieved in its second decade, especially on the five corridors, namely growth, livelihood, openness, inclusivity and innovation, as outlined by Chinese Vice Premier, He Lifeng last year.

In this regard, he lauded services of Minister Planning Ahsan Iqbal as called him Mr. CPEC and noted the 5-E’s framework i.e. Export, Energy, Equity, E-Pakistan and Environment, envisioned by the Government of Pakistan, to implement these five corridors under CPEC.

Both sides also discussed early implementation of ML-I, KKH realignment and other key infrastructure projects in Pakistan.

The minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the high-quality development of CPEC, outlining future cooperation under CPEC phase-II in such priority sectors as IT, agriculture modernization, textile, minerals and renewable energy, among others.

He thanked China for its support to make CPEC a flagship project of BRI, adding the project had helped Pakistan modernize its energy and logistics infrastructure.

The minister highlighted the need for greater Business to Business links for the second phase of CPEC for which issuance of visas to Pakistani businessmen should be facilitated.

He highlighted the significance and urgency of ML-1 Peshawar- Karachi Railway mainline project and called for enhanced collaboration in the field of Human Resource Development (HRD), especially through capacity building programs and training opportunities, recognizing it an important area in the second phase of CPEC.

He apprised the Chinese side about enhanced security measures taken by Government of Pakistan for security of Chinese personnel.

As part of efforts to promote people to people linkages, both sides agreed to further enhance visa facilitation for each other’s citizens, which was also highlighted as central to strengthen B2B cooperation.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continue high-level exchanges between the two sides with a view to fostering the China Pakistan Community of Shared Future in the New Era.

Prof. Ahsan Iqbal arrived in Beijing today as part of the high-level interactions between China and Pakistan.

The minister was accompanied by Ambassador Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Foreign Affairs.

After his arrival, the minister held several key meetings, including at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation (SINOSURE) and China Development Bank (CDB).

SAPM Amb. Tariq Fatemi and Khalil Hashmi, Ambassador of Pakistan to China were also present at the meeting.

Later, Professor Ahsan Iqbal also met with leadership of Chinese financial institutions, including Sheng Hetai, President of China Export and Credit Insurance Corp. (SINOSURE) at SINOSURE’s Headquarters and discussed cooperation across various sectors, including early completion of hydel power projects such as Azad Pattan and Kohala.

The both sides agreed to realize the common goal of shared progress and prosperity.

The minister also met with President of China Development Bank (CDB), Tan Jiong.

While highlighting the deep rooted friendship between China and Pakistan, he noted the exception and unique nature of the bilateral relationship and acknowledged the contribution of CDB in making CPEC successful.

The two sides also discussed CDB’s support for development projects in Pakistan, especially in infrastructure, renewable energy and industrial sectors.

The President CDB assured the minister of the bank’s continued support to the efforts of the Government of Pakistan to accelerate the pace of the socio-economic development in the country.

The minister invited the President CDB to undertake a visit to Pakistan to witness the success of several key CPEC projects in the country.

SCCI demands establishment of state of art lab for gemstone certification

PESHAWAR, May 08 (APP):Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry demanded establishment of a state of the art laboratory for certification of precious and semi-precious stones in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to carry out proper cutting and polishing on scientific methods and enhance export Pakistan gems and earn hefty foreign exchange for the country.
The demand was made by senior vice president of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Sanaullah Khan while chairing a meeting regarding promotion of gems and jewelry sector held here at the chamber house on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by Director Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Noman Bashir, Director Gems and Gemological Institute Peshawar (GGIP) Naveed Masood, Coordinator Gems and Jewelry Association Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shahid Khan, an executive member of the chamber Qurat Ul Ain, Acting Secretary General Muqtasid Ahsan, and other senior officials concerned.
Participants during the meeting gave a number of proposals for promotion of the gems and jewelry sector and urged federal and provincial governments to outline a comprehensive plan for development of the gems sector, establishment of a state of the art laboratory for certification of precious and semi-precious stones, essentially upgradation of GGIP and allocation of separate land for this purpose.
Sanaullah Khan suggested allocation of land/dedicated place in Namak Mandi Peshawar, which is hub of business and trade for GGIP.
The senior office bearer of the SCCI demanded of the government to take pragmatic steps for promotion of gems and jewelry sector.
He furthermore called for the imposition of a ban on export of rough and uncut precious and semi-precious stones.
Noman Bashir said TDAP in light of the SCCI proposals would take all steps for promotion of gems and jewelry sector, particularly, identification of suitable land/location for GGIP upgradation and putting it into modern lines.
Officials of TDAP and GGIPs gave full assurance to implement the SCCI recommendations for development of the gems and jewelry sector for which the chamber SVP Sanallah Khan thanked them.

Simplification of tax collection, better liaison between businessmen-tax officials stressed

PESHAWAR, May 08 (APP):Coordinator Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Zia ul Haq Sarhadi has laid stress on making tax collection procedure simpler and for increasing liaison between business community and officials of Income Tax department.
He expressed these views while talking to the newly posted Chief Commissioner Regional Tax Office (RTO) Peshawar, Zafar Iqbal Khan.
Coordinator PAJCCI, Zia Sarhadi called on Zafar Iqbal Khan to felicitate his appointment and for apprising him about some issues pertained to business community.
During the meeting, Commissioner In-Land Revenue Mardan, Shahid Mehmood, Commissioner In-Land Revenue Corporate, Syed Fazle Malik, Commissioner In-Land Revenue Withholding Zone, Syed Khalid Shah, Commissioner In-Land Revenue Peshawar Zone, Dr. Farooq Jamil and Commissioner In-Land Revenue D.I.Khan, Irfan Aziz were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi expressed the hope that the newly appointed Commissioner will take measures for betterment of trading community of the province.
He also apprised participants of the meeting about different measures taken by Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO), Dr. Asif Mehmood Jah (recipient of prestigious Hilal-e-Imtiaz and Sitara-e-Imtiaz awards) about different measures taken for resolving different problems being faced by business community of the country.
It merits a mention here that Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi is also performing as honorary Coordinator Media Affairs in Federal Tax Ombudsman.
He also presented different suggestions for bringing reforms in tax collection procedure, simplification of tax collection and for redressal of difficulties faced by tax payers.
Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner RTO Peshawar, Zafar Iqbal Khan held out assurance of his cooperation in coordination with business community of the province.
He said business community can approach him at any time for brining into his notice any issue causing inconvenience to them.
The RTO office and its officials will take every possible step for providing relief to business community of the region, Zafar Khan reiterated.
