‘Unprecedented’ levels of ‘near famine-like conditions’ in war-ravaged Gaza: UN

0

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 13 (APP): Besieged Gaza’s population is suffering “unprecedented” levels of “near famine-like conditions” as deadly Israeli attacks on the enclave continue, according to the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Some 550,000 people are now likely facing catastrophic food insecurity levels, while the whole population is in crisis mode, the UN agency said.

FAO Deputy Director General Beth Bechdol said on Monday all the 2.2 million people in Gaza are in the top three hunger categories, from level three, which is considered an emergency, to level five, or catastrophe.

“We are seeing more and more people essentially on the brink of and moving into famine-like conditions every day.”

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) rates hunger levels from one to five.

“At this stage, probably about 25 percent of that 2.2 million are in that top-level IPC five category,” Ms. Bechdol said.

The bloodiest ever Gaza war broke out on Oct. 7.

Rafah, on Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, has become a last refuge for fleeing civilians.

Many are sleeping outside in tents and makeshift shelters amid mounting concern about the lack of food, water and sanitation during an Israeli siege.

Before the conflict, the people of Gaza had “a self-sustaining fruit and vegetable production sector, populated with greenhouses, while there was also a robust backyard small-scale livestock production sector,” Ms. Bechdol said.

There is no estimate of how many Palestinians have died directly or indirectly of hunger since the outbreak of the war. The few remaining hospitals in Gaza typically only record deaths from Israeli attacks.

Israel has killed more than 28,000 people, many of them women and children, since that October day, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The vast majority of the Gaza population has been displaced and the medical system lies in ruins, meaning many deaths go uncounted.

UN rights chief warns against potential ‘carnage’ in Gaza Strip’s Rafah city

0

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 12 (APP): UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has appealed for restraint in the face of an Israeli military incursion in Rafah, warning of the risk of further atrocity crimes in the Gaza war.

Nearly 1.5 million people are now crammed into the southern city on the border with Egypt, and with nowhere further to flee. A potential full-fledged incursion in Rafah “is terrifying, given the prospect that an extremely high number of civilians, again mostly children and women, will likely be killed and injured,” Turk warned on Monday.

“Today, sadly, given the carnage wrought so far in Gaza it is wholly imaginable what would lie ahead in Rafah,” he added.

The incursion may also mean the end of the “meager” humanitarian aid entering Gaza, with huge implications, including for hundreds of thousands of people in the north of the enclave who are at grave risk of starvation and famine.

“My Office has repeatedly warned against actions that violate the laws of war. The prospect of such an operation into Rafah, as circumstances stand, risks further atrocity crimes,” Turk said.

The UN rights chief urged Israel to comply with the legally binding orders issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and with the full span of international humanitarian law.

Following a case brought forward by South Africa, the ICJ – the UN’s top court – declared last month that Palestinians had a right to be protected from acts of genocide, and called on Israel to “take all measures within its power” to prevent such actions and allow aid to enter Gaza.

“Those who defy international law have been put on notice. Accountability must follow,” Turk added.

“The world must not allow this to happen. Those with influence must restrain rather than enable. There must be an immediate ceasefire. All remaining hostages must be released. And there must be renewed collective resolve to reach a political solution.”

UN chief urges Pakistanis to resolve all post-election issues through set legal mechanisms

0

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 12 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called on Pakistani authorities and political leaders to resolve the issues related to last week’s election through established legal procedures and to avoid any action that raise tensions.

The UN chief also urged them to maintain a “calm atmosphere” in the country.

“The Secretary-General is monitoring the situation in Pakistan and calls for the resolving all issues and disputes through the established legal frameworks, and for human rights and the rule of law, to be fully respected in the interest of the people of Pakistan,” his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said in response to a question at the regular noon briefing in New York.

“The Secretary-General urges the authorities and political leaders to maintain a calm atmosphere, and to reject and refrain from all forms of violence and avoid any actions that could increase or inflame tensions.”

LHC dismisses petitions challenging victories of Maryam Nawaz, others

0
LAHORE, Feb 12 (APP):The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday dismissed petitions challenging election victories of 18 candidates including Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shehbaz, Khawaja Asif, Atta Tarar, Saiful Malook Khokhar of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Abdul Aleem Khan of Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).
The court dismissed the petitions for not being maintainable and observed that reasons would be recorded in the detailed verdict. The court also asked the petitioners to approach the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for redressal of their grievances.
Justice Ali Baqar Najafi announced the reserved verdict on petitions filed by Rihana Dar, Mian Shahzad Farooq and other runner-up independent candidates. The court had reserved its verdict on maintainability of the petitions after hearing arguments of the counsel for petitioners, ECP and PML-N, earlier in the day.
In the course of arguments, the counsel for runner-up candidates argued that the returning officers (ROs) manipulated vote counts in Form 45 and 47. The court was requested to set aside the victory of the respondent candidates.
However, counsel for the ECP and PML-N raised objections on maintainability of the petitions and requested to send all these petitions to the commission.
The counsel for ECP further submitted that several petitioners had approached the commission and notices had been issued on their applications. He further submitted that the ECP was the first available forum for redressal of the grievances.
Meanwhile, the court also dismissed a petition filed by independent candidate Salman Akram Raja regarding  success of Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) candidate Aun Chaudhry from NA-128 constituency.
The court dismissed the petition for not being maintainable and ordered the petitioner to approach the ECP for redressal of his grievance. Justice Ali Baqar Najafi announced the reserved verdict on the petition filed by Salman Akram Raja. The court had reserved its verdict on maintainability of the petition after hearing arguments of the parties, earlier in the day.
The petitioner had emphasized that the issue pertained to violation of rule, not vote counting. He stressed the necessity of candidates’ presence during result compilation as per the Election Act. He questioned whether results could be validated in the candidate’s absence and highlighted that results of only 13 polling stations of NA-128 constituency were compiled in their presence.
